The dispatcher called ahead and told me they would arrive in about 20 minutes. They did. We walked the house and I verbally gave the overall requirements as listed. I asked if they could disconnect the range hood and give me a chance to prime the wall and bottom of the cabinets. One man disconnnected the hood and the two carried it outside for me to recycle. The other man worked on installing the fan and track light. When installing the range hood there was some issus with the location of the ductwork from the old to the new. After several conversations the electrician said he would go ahead and cut the new hole and remove part of the old ductwork but that I would have to a new sheet metal piece fabricated in order to use the remaining existing ducst work. I agreed. When installing the new GFI he was careful to inform me that because the laminate was old and over masonite that he would have to cut through the laminate and the plaster and the laminate might crack. The house was built in 1946. I told him I had a drill if he needed to start the cut and he said he already had one. I told him to proceed. The GFI was installed sucessfully. The hood was also installed but he did not give me time to do the prime work I had asked for . There was also some small damage to the hood which he did not point out to me. I ordered the hood by mail but cannot say it came in perfect condition. In the bathroom we discussed two locations for the GFI. He said he did not have the proper tools to cut the wall tile. We compromised on a location above the tile. He said the should use the conduit location of a bedroom outlet to pull the wire needed for the GFI in the bathroom but he might damage the paint. I told him to proceed. Again he was cutting in plaster. He did repair with spackle some plaster damage. It was getting late so I told them I would clean up the plaster. Overall they did what I asked, but they missed one duplex replacement in the kitchen which I did not discover until after they left. They did reset the electrical panel back and double checked to make sure everything was working. It was about 3 hours of work for the two of them. They supplied all the outlets required.
Description of Work: Remove existing ceiling fan. Install new fan in the same location in a family room. Remove variable speed wall outlet. Install regular wall switch to the new fan with light. Remove existing track light. Install new track light in same location in family room. Install GFI outlet in kitchen near sink in duplex outlet location. Install new GFI oulet in laminate backsplash in kitchen near sink. Remove old duplex behind refrigerator and install a new white outlet. Remove old duplex in plaster wall and install new white wall outlet. Remove old stove hood and install new one. Install new ceiling mounted light fixture. Old one was already removed. Install new GFI outlet in bathroom near sink in wall.

Thank you for being a customer. We are asked to do a wide variety of work that sometimes requires special tools or skill. Our guys can fulfill most requests but not immediately, all the time. Sometimes, depending on the requirement, we may have to return. If we cannot do a certain portion of the job because it involves another trade we will advise you but take care of the electrical portion.

Thank you for the review and for being a customer. From time to time manufacturers may build a product that does not work properly. In those situations American Electrical Contracting will replace the product based on the manufacturers warranty for that product. We warranty our labor for a full year and the manufacturers warranty for as long as that manufacturer warranty is in effect. The warranty on a standard incandescent bulb is 30 days. Some of our landscape lighting products have 5 year , 10 year or lifetime warranties, so before you run to that big box store and purchase what you think are great landscape products, call American for better products and have us install them for you. You can find Landscape lights on our main web site.

Thank you for being a customer. A quick note about appliances: when you purchase a new appliance, depending on what you had before, the outlet in the wall may need to be changed. Do not change the plug on the appliance. There is a reason the manufacturer provided that plug. Contact us and we will install what you need to make sure everything works properly.

Michael and Ricky did a great job. They arrived a few minutes before the scheduled appointment. They came in and we laid out the scope. They gave me an estimate, and I approved the plan. They got to work and added some great ideas that we included into the scope that likely saved me future costs. These guys were great. The overall price was high, but you get what you pay for, and they were extremely fair. Thanks guys!

I had called the company on Thursday and two persons came promptly as promised at 9AM on Friday. They examined the job and quickly flush mounted the old outlet which was used for the range. Then they decided to install the new circuit from overhead. While they tried their best, this turned out to be a no go as the location was blocked by the join of the old portion of the house with the new portion. Alternatively, they decided to add the new circuit through the crawl space. This was successful. The new outlet was installed in such a way that it could easily be placed within the new cabinet. The two members of this company were professional in both their attitude and work. They wasted no time in going about their tasks, remaining positive throughout their effort. The job was completed by 11AM. The circuit was in and the job was done neat and clean. Before leaving I asked if there was a whole house surge protector available. Immediately, the lead person came up with a device to do the job. Of the total cost, this device was a fixed $265 component. In fifteen minutes they had it installed and the overall job was completed. Although one might consider the cost high, the prevailing cost of electrical work and the challenge of the location of this work, I consider the cost reasonable. I was certainly happy with the result.
Description of Work: I needed a new circuit to service an over the range microwave. This was not a simple job as the microwave was to go on a cement block wall between the old and new portions of my house. I wanted a new outlet and I wanted an old outlet flush mounted so I could move my new glass top range closer to the wall. The new outlet had to be installed in such a way that a cabinet to be added later would allow the new outlet to be flush mounted inside the cabinet. At the conclusion of the job I inquired about adding a all house surge protector to protect my new range from frequent electrical surges.

I called these gentlemen out twice before to help with the breaker. I called them first because I run on a well system that is controlled by electricity, so I chose them as my primary go to before calling a drilling company. The previous times they came out they insisted that the problem was with my well, and charged me $100+ for the call. I called the well company, Partridge, and they came out to inspect the issue, and assured me that the issue was electric, and there was nothing they could do about it. That trip cost me another $100+. When the problem almost immediately returned, I went back and called the electric company again, explaining what I had been told by the drilling company. They came out, did another check, and told me the same thing, that American Electrical couldn't help me, I'd have to call the drilling company back. I did that, and again, paid $100+ for American Electrical's second visit, and when Partridge returned, they shook their heads, apologized to me, and WROTE DOWN EXACTLY WHAT THE ELECTRIC COMPANY NEEDED TO DO IN ORDER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I still had to pay $100+ for their visit. I called American Electrical back, almost freaking out at this point, and asked them to come fix the problem, that *I* could tell them how to do their jobs and fix it, basically, and when a technician returned to my house, I brought him the receipt from Partridge that held the instructions on how to fix the circuit breaker, and the technician fixed it within 20 minutes, as if it were a non issue. THAT visit cost me another $150+. I am a divorced mother of three with an ex husband who does NOT support his children, I can NOT afford to throw my money away for a company who either doesn't know how to do their job or doesn't care enough to actually look for and fix the problem. The fact that a well drilling company had to write down instructions for the electrician, and he was RIGHT, and I haven't had a problem SINCE, was VERY telling for me. I was SO disappointed, I can't count how many tears I cried because of money lost, they must have been laughing all the way to the bank. I put off posting this review for so long because I just couldn't find a happy medium in how I felt about the services. I truly felt as though I was taken advantage of in every aspect of the word. I will not ever call them again, and I will never recommend their business to anyone, ever.
Description of Work: Eventually the problem was fixed, but I needed a circuit breaker that could carry a larger load, as running my household was constantly tripping my water breaker and shutting off my ability to use it.

Because we at American Electrical Contracting really care, there is never a good time to read a bad review. However, after investigating the statements made by this customer we did not feel as bad because we could not find anything in our files to substantiate her statements. Let me explain. When we work for you, the job tickets of every electrician is reviewed by each Manager the next day. Job tickets shows why were at your home or business and what we did. Invoices are created and each ticket is scanned into the system where it is time and date stamped. This means that most tickets are achieved within one or two days of completed jobs. This allows us to give you excellent customer service by being able to quickly retrieve information when customers call. Rather than recollection we are looking at facts. Fact, the total invoice for this customer, for the issue discussed, was $147.35 parts and labor. The work was done in one trip on June 5th 2012. Verified by GPS, the electrician arrived at 12:53 and left at 1:45. At American Electrical Contracting, Inc. we go to great lengths to make sure we take good care of our customers. There are no short cuts to doing a good job. We know that you work hard for your money and we will work hard for you. By the way, for those of you who keep up with all of these reviews, I personally reached out to Mrs. Callihan to see how we could make things right. Via her Son, who called her, she stated she did not do a Angie’s List review and has had no electrical work done. Case closed.

I was extremely disappointed in the lack of response after reaching out to this company for recessed lighting and under cabinet lighting estimates. Apparently the size of the job was less than what American Electrical wanted so rather than send a note advising this, they chose not to respond to my request at all. A satisfied ending would have been a response and perhaps the name of a company more suited to my needs.

Before responding to negative customer reviews I investigate the complaint, not to make excuses but to get the facts. Sometimes I find that someone simply forgot because they were trying to meet deadlines. Once I found out that the estimator gave a verbal price but neglected to send out a written proposal as he had promised and every now and then, someone misplaced the paperwork. To resolve the paperwork issue the computer and smart phones were used to improve response by getting more organized. We have never had a situation where we did not respond because the job was too small. As a matter of fact, we have reviews on this site ranging from FREE to over $15,000. We do not do free often but occasionally it’s the right thing to do. The fact remains that this customer was not properly taken care of which means we have to tighten up our continuous effort to be a better contractor. Although we have one many Super Service Awards, for being the best service provider, we never rest on previous success. We know we have to earn each individual’s customer’s trust and respect. We sincerely hope you give us the opportunity to do that. We will reach out to this customer to see if we can make what was wrong right.

They arrived first thing in the morning and got to work immediately, starting at the garage electrical box. The wiring was difficult because my main electrical box is on an outside wall, which I knew it would be, but they accomplished it anyway. One of them was a younger guy who could crawl around in the tight attic spaces to get it done. It's a great idea to always have one young guy on the team who can perform amazing physical feats if needed. In the kitchen they removed the existing hood & cabinet for me, and even told me where I could get a new, matching cabinet that would fit in the now-reduced space. He even reminded me about my Angielist coupon which I had forgotten to print out.

We purchased a new house and needed ceiling fans with lights installed. I found the company on Angie's List, and the reviews are amazing. I called the office and they immediately put me through to an electrician to provide my quote. I immediately scheduled my appointment for 2/1, and the company checked in the day before because they had availability...that was amazing. The electricians were early, fast, and professional. Their work was so superb, I then had them mount a flat panel tv and place the wiring behind the wall. Then we had them to place a house surge protector. It's an amazing company, that I will not hesitate to call again for any electrical needs. For the requested work, they were over $100 cheaper than the quote.

Thank you for the great review. We sincerely mean this when we say it, “reading good reviews never gets old.” They are what we work for and what gives us a sense of accomplishment when we read them. When speaking to new customers it can be very difficult to convince them that we are where they can confidently spend their hard earned money. These reviews help to remove any doubt, especially if the work you are looking to have done is similar to the work reviewed. Thanks again.

Although most of our request from Angie’s List is for residential work, we are equally competent with all kinds of commercial work because we are a commercial and residential electrical contractor. With a dozen master electricians and 23 licensed electrical crews, your commercial work is in good hands. Some of our largest customers are Property Managers. For them we are a one stop shop, doing everything from working in a tenants unit to the parking lot lights. We have also wired major national banks and many chain as well as specialty restaurants. Thank you for being a customer and providing a review of your service call. A quick note about three way switches. If you have switches in two different locations that control the same light(s), that is accomplished with the use of three way switches. If you have a problem with yours, set up a service call because you have to know how to connect them properly, in order for them to work properly. For example, improperly connected three way switches may turn off the lights at the bottom of the stairs, with the switch at the bottom but the switch upstairs will not turn on the lights back on. Please call us we can fix that.

I called and spoke with American Electrical's call center. I was told someone would call me between 12noon and 1pm to set up an arrival time. This didn't happen. I was away most of the morning. But returned at 12noon to receive the call. What I found was a message on my answering machine from the electrician. It was 9 o clock and he said he was on theway. So they missed me due to the mix up. I kept my end of the bargain by being here for their phone call. I am all for good communication. So many times, contractors and electricians act as though they call the shots on 'when' they will do the work. What many of them forget is the one paying for the service call decides this, not the other way around. I would have preferred a more seamless communication from American Electrical about the time they would be headed to my house. In less than 5 minutes, one of the electricians began telling me what I wasn't going to get accomplished today. Before I had a chance to mentionthe crawl space of my house, the electrician told me 'Not in this house'. Granted, my house is a three story home. I assume most homes this gentleman worked on do not have crawl spaces. Mine does. So the work was possible and was completed. He later apologized for assuming the work could not be done. Find out what their labor per hour charge is. I still don't know what American Electrical charges for labor. I do know it is way too expensive. The electricians were at my house for a little over 2 hours. Take this number and divide the cost of labor. I did and their charges were well over $170 an hour. That is excessive by anyone's standards. What are they, lawyers? I now have three doorbell buttons for all doors and a buzzer in my attic. My goal was to make my home more visitor friendly by providing communication devices. I wish the communication with American Electrical was as good as my doorbells. It is great to have the work done. But I am shocked at the cost of this service. We're talking a doorbell, not an intercom system. I alsonoted the quality of the wires they used. The existing wires were solid copper. The replacements were anything but solid. You could look at them and they would break. I hope the wiring holds up to the test of time. I believe in cutting costs. But when you are charged so much, the wires should be premium quality, not breakable thin wires.
Description of Work: I called American Electrical to fix an existing doorbell line running to my front door. I also wanted doorbell buttons installed on my back door and the side door of my house. I also wanted a buzzer for my attic workshop.

Scheduling appointments that will make everyone happy, all the time, is impossible. Suffice to say, we make the first appointment on time. The other appointments are all estimates that may or may not be accurate depending on how accurately we forecasted the completion & travel time from the previous job. That is why we call ahead to and try to use the customer’s time and ours as wisely as possible. In your case, as you pointed out, we had an unfortunate a mix up on the arrival time. Appointment times are made with each customer by Dispatch. Their goal is to set a time acceptable for the customer that we are confident we can make. It is a mutually agreed up time that factors in the kind of work that has to be completed, the availability of the electrician and the customer’s ideal time. It is not simply based on our availability, although that has to be an obvious factor. Our labor rates are always discussed with customers because they are a factor in the decision making of new customers. We can sometimes quote a flat rate price, meaning a fixed price, for the job if we know how long the job will take and all of the material required. Or we are quoting time and material, which is based on the labor rate of $98.50 for the first ½ hour and $27.50 for each ¼ hour. This has been our labor rate for years and it can be found on the back of our Standard Terms and Conditions item # 11. We feel that this is a fair price because the time does not start until we arrive at your home. Others may charge from the time the call is taken and the drive time to and from your home. Also, we are billing by the ¼ hour, we are not charging you for any portion every ½ hour or hour regardless of home many minutes were worked. Best of all our knowledgeable crews typically complete assignments promptly and leave your home clean. The type or wires used for various jobs is governed by the National Electrical Code, in addition to Local Electrical Code. If your wires were small it is because that is what is required. Low voltage bell transformers drop the voltage from 110 volts down to the 16 volts required to work the bell. Only 2 strands of 18 gauge wires is required for that job. This is sometimes called low voltage or thermostat wire and is exactly what the application calls for and it is solid copper wire. If you have a question pleases feel free to ask. There are 13 Master Electricians at American Electrical Contracting, Inc. where most companies have one. We are certain we can politely respond to any commercial or residential issues that customers are faced with. Good customers are the life blood of our business and we want to make sure that once customers use our service they can comfortably call us back without hesitation. We offer a one year warranty on our labor and enforce the manufacturer’s warranty on behalf of our customers. We stand behind our work and conduct business in a professional courteous manner at all times.

Good communications is one of the keys to any successful business or relationship. We try to never take a defensive posture but rather, learn from our mistakes and share information fostering better relationships with customers. We also understand that although we live in a period where there are many ways to communicate, problems do sometimes occur, on both ends and the communication does not take place. Please allow me to be both defensive and informative. This request came to my e-mail on Monday, November 19th 2012 at 8:07 PM. I sent an e-mail response on November 19th at 8:51 PM. (We close at 5:00 PM) However, this e-mail came to me via al-542592@emailrouter.angieslist.com which means the customer did not provide his e-mail address so I did two things. One, I responded to al-542592@emailrouter.angieslist.com at the time noted above and called the next business day and I believe I left a voicemail. I did not get a response so at some point I called back, a lady answered and I left a message. After not getting a response on my third communication attempt, one e-mail and two messages, I did not try any further. To address these issues I am doing 2 things: First I will find out from Angie’s List if the above mail router allows two way communications or only allows customers to send messages to service providers. I am under the impression that service provider’s responses does not get back to the customer via the address above. If the e-mail DID make it back to a customer account, then Angie’s may need to let customers know where to look on their site for responses to their inquiries. Second here is my Direct Dial phone number 904-208-6294; my name is Robert Holness and I personally run and post all internet operations and sites for American Electrical Contracting, Inc. We take a lot of pride in what we do and we always need business. We will never deliberately disrespect a customer by not returning a phone call. We sympathize with you, most contractors would rather get that phone call saying they lost the business rather than being ignored, making them feel as if they wasted their time. We have won the Super Service Award on this site multiple years in a row for being the best electrical service provider based on responses from actual customers. Our work and responses help us to remain on top. Angie’s List does a great job of providing useful information helping customers to make good business decisions. Over the years they have improved their offerings and services. If there is a communication issue we will get to the bottom of it and share the results.

I am a paraplegic and rather fearful of electrical fires so I called American in hopes of fast service. They came out the same day, armed with professionalism and politeness. They were also very empathic to my physical situation. They ran a new circuit to the outlet at fault and checked the entire electrical panel. Quality was excellent, as was their knowledge and willingness to do what it took, i.e. they got dirty when necessary, but didn't track the dirt back into my house.

Sir we sincerely thank you for being a customer & our guys were happy to fix your electrical problems. Every now and then we hear about a contractor without a heart, that rips people off. That is simply wrong. In fairness, there are some people that rip off contractors. We are all better served by doing our best to avoid unscrupulous individuals in all walks of life. “Wired Right at a Fair Price”, is the way we do business and we stand behind our work.

shawn and justin were amazing! professional, knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and incredibly skilled! i have never used a professional electrician before--and i am so glad i did this time! never again will i look to a retail company's installers to do the work that would be much better done by a professional electrician.
Description of Work: they hung a 55 inch plasma TV over our fireplace--punched a whole through the wall and snaked the cords through the walls so no cords would show. they also installed a whole-house surge protector, an extra electrical outlet in the garage, and started the process of updating the overhead lights throughout the house.

Thank you for being a customer and for taking the time to write a review. In all phases of the work we perform, for both residential & commercial customers, we make sure we are dispatching the right crew for the task at hand. Some crews are residential experts while some are commercial experts. Still others are good at both commercial and residential work. A few crews are excellent troubleshooters and can find and fix problems faster than others. Additionally, we have others that are standby generator & parking lot light experts. Pulling from our rich stock of professionals we make sure we dispatch the crew that has the knowledge to complete your requested tasks in a timely manner.

We have a gas fireplace insert that was in the house when we bought it. It originally turned off and on with a wall switch, but I had been unable to operate it through the wall switch for several years. It was a very small job, but they took it without hesitation and showed up right on time, with an appointment just two days after my call. The electrician who arrived had no specific experience with the unit, but checked everything out and could find nothing obviously wrong, Eventually we concluded that I just didn't have it set up correctly. A switch underneath had to be turned on in order to light the pilot and flame the first time, but it then had to be in the off position for the wall switch to work. While no actual repair took place I was very happy with the education he provided. The job was performed in a friendly, highly professionally manner, including cleanup, and the price was very reasonable. I would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: "Repaired" the electrical problems with a gas fireplace insert.

This call is not typical of the kind of work that we do. However, because it involved electricity our crew took the time to troubleshoot the electrical portion. If this would have become really involved we would have referred this to the gas company. I am certain other readers that may have the same issue, appreciate your summary. From a safety stand point if you smell gas, call your gas company & don’t smoke.

We had American Electrical for several jobs in Sept-Oct 2012 and they did fine. The only problem was that occasionally they woudn't have a small part on the truck and then it would take several days for them to be scheduled to return and install it. That is why the B in responsiveness.
Description of Work: Install wiring, lighting, outlets in kitchen.

Member we thank you for being a customer & being patient with us. We have a very large warehouse at American Electrical Contracting where we stock thousands of the most popular parts used. Unfortunately the electrical trade is one that seems to have an infinite number of parts. On occasion we do not have certain parts or we may run out of a standard part. Unless it is a special order, our team of reliable suppliers will have what we need to complete work. We then prefer to schedule the crew that started the work complete it, unless for certain there are only a couple of simple things to be done. We have found that having the same crew that started a job complete it, leads to greater customer satisfaction because it decreases the chances of something being forgotten. We appreciate your business and look forward to taking care of any future needs.
