Mike Scott Plumbing

I called Mike Scott plumbing on the recommendation of my aunt. I wanted to get a reverse-osmosis filter I had purchased installed and a quote to do so. The "supervisor", everyone's a supervisor and they won't give out names, came out and was nice enough. I got a call from the office the next day. The receptionist talked so fast you could barely understand her. When I asked to talk to the supervisor that came out I was given the supervisor of the store which was the rudest @$$hole I've had the pleasure of dealing with this year. I tried to ask if we could put the RO in some place they thought it would work better but they clearly weren't interested in the job and he said they weren't interested in "Gerry-ringing anything" which my family got a big kick out of since I never "Gerry-ring" and over-build like crazy. I spoke to a woman on the phone describing my problem (full scale leak) but she was not a sales person and didn't know the answers to my questions about a replacement unit. Why she didn't transfer me to someone with more information I don't know. We eventually came to an agreement on the replacement unit so she could give me a price of $625 installed for a 40 gal tank. They would also remove the old tank. She couldn't tell me the efficiency rating or warrantee period. I would also have to sign over the gas company rebate to Mike Scott Plumbing. So the price she quoted was my out of pocket price. They scheduled an appt for 2 days from the failure to replace it. I found out later that I could have gotten a replacement through the gas company (Teco) and one of its partners for $9.99/month for 60 months, slightly less than Mike Scott. The advantage of the Teco plan is that they would add this monthly charge to your gas bill and would essentially finance the cost over 5 years with no interest.

The price charged was towards the high end, but reasonable. The quality of work was spotty - largely a function of which guys did the work - some were good , others not so much. The amount of work that had to be redone was surprising and, even though it was at their expense, that kind of performance drives the cost up for all customers - they have to make it up somewhere. After the first few missteps, I watched the work very carefully and prevented some other mistakes. In general they responded in a timely manner to inquiries or problems, but I thought they tended to be rather inflexible at times. As far as professionalism goes, the job supervisor was good - the others were not. I assume they are instructed to do their work and not communicate with the customer because they didn't often. That lack of communication contributed to a number of the mistakes that were made. They invariably did not clean up after themselves, leaving debris at nearly every work location that I had to clean up and not replacing things the way they found them (including things like turning lights off and closing doors) when they finished their work. A small example, they dropped the old hose bibs where they took them off and left them there. The most egregious issue was that at the end of the work, when flooring had been installed, they tracked mud into the house leaving trails on the hardwood and stains in the grout of the shower floor. They are a large company and do a lot of work in the area. I used them once before on a small job and had a good experience. But, I think that they may be better suited to larger projects and/or new construction. I would not use them again for this kind of work.

John, from Mike Scott, arrived on time, as scheduled. A well-mannered gentleman, he was also very meticulous when installing the faucet. I was also impressed that he cleaned up all of the debris after he was finished. I do plan on using Mike Scott Plumbing again, and will ask for John if he's available.
