He then arrived on time at our home to fix a large antique desk which was too large to move. He fixed broken doors and drawers. In all, he workmanship was excellent.
Description of Work: David did an excellent job in repairing dining room chairs and a very old secretaries desk. He was prompt, delivered on time and charged a fair price. He is very accommodating and I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs furniture repaired.

Overall, the furniture looks wonderful. The pieces lacked luster due to the accumulation of s*** over time, but Dave cleaned them very carefully and painstakingly. The furniture is now displayed prominently throughout our home.
Description of Work: Dave was very professional and extremely responsive to our requests. We had several antique pieces of furniture that required cleaning and restoration including a 100 year-old roll top desk and chair, a martini bar, and a rocker; we were not going to trust just anyone to do this work. After making initial contact with him, Dave promptly made an appointment to see the furniture, discussed our options for each piece, and provided a very reasonable quote. He did a terrific job cleaning them meticulously, restoring each piece to its former glory, and completing the work in a matter of days. We were thrilled with the results and would not hesitate to use him again.

Dave called the same day I called him and left a message. He set an appointment within two days and called before arriving on the set date. He was right on time. His inspection and estimate took less than 30 minutes. He did not give an estimated time for return of my items but he called the next day to set a time for delivery of the repaired items. Within two days my bedroom set was repaired and back together. It was awesome!!
Description of Work: Dave repaired the frame of a mirror for a triple dresser and two ball and claw feet on the triple dresser.

I called David up and we spoke briefly about the articles that I want refinished. Next we set up an appointment so as he could estimate the cost of the repairs and I left the furniture with him for refurbishing.
Description of Work: David did a wonderful job on both a wooden rocker and a small end table. His prices are reasonable and his work is excellent. He completed the job on time and was even a day early. He's a great communicator. I will use Dakota Furniture Repair again and I would also suggest that you do the same! You will not be disappointed. First off, this is a really nice guy. He tried is best to repair and mask various problems with our furniture. Cat scratch on top of desk w/leather top... his repair was to spray something on it and wipe it with a rag. Said nothing else could be done. It looks the same as it did prior to spraying. Then there was the table, which had been dropped, cracked, and a piece was missing on the edge of the table. It needed to be glued back together, fill in some spots with wood putty, sanded, and painted. Before my wife came in and talked to him about doing these things, he said there was nothing he could do to help the table. After she told him what could be done, he said he could do that. So he sanded the old glue off two parts of the table very well and glued them back together perfectly. However, when it came to filling in the cracks with the artificial stuff, he missed some spots and after he thought he was done, I showed him where there were still some spaces that needed more putty. He agreed he missed some spots and would fill them. He filled some of them in, but still did not fill in the all the cracks. We told him we'd go ahead and sand down the rest of it and paint it ourselves. Then there was our heirloom dresser that we needed re-finished. He did a good job masking the scratches on the front/side and hiding the water marks on the top of the dresser/drawers. When he said he was done, I showed him various spots that needed more care/color, etc... I was expecting to get someone who would repair and re-finish the furniture, sort of like the guy on "American Restoration" on the History Channel, but that's not what we got. Instead we got a really nice guy who did his best to use the products at his disposal to mask aesthetic blemishes on your furniture. If you want to take care of things on the cheap and do what you can to mask and hide, this might be your guy.
Description of Work: wanted to re-finish and restore a dresser, repair/refinish a dinning room table, repair a cat scratch on top of brand new leather top desk.

All-Maple Computer Desk ($$$) was poorly designed with a top that was too heavy for legs support. Legs were never properly anchored to top - they would constantly bow out & the whole desk was going to topple. Gave up fighting with furniture store & this was my last ditch effort to save the desk. Support holes were filled in & then re-drilled properly. Desk legs are now 100% secure & desk is usable.

I called to get an estimate. We talked about the condition of the chair and he gave me a guess but would have to see the rocker for a good quote. I delivered the chair to him. He came out and helped us get the chair out of our little toyota. We got the chair in the back seat but could not get it out. lol He explained what he would do and how long it would take. He showed us a few things he was already working on. It took less time than he had quoted. The chair looks great. I am amazed how nice it looks. I would not have spent the money because I really did not think it would come out this nice. It is the chair I rocked my babies in and now my daughter has asked for the rocking chair. I am so glad we spent the money. He is professional and a really nice guy!
Description of Work: He took an oak rocking chair that had fallen apart and sat in the garage for 12 years and made it look new again. He stripped and refinished the wood. He repaired a full crack all the way from the front of the seat to the back of the seat back into a solid seat. He repaired several places where the veneer was coming apart.

The general work was very nicely done. Some of the details were not quite covered, but I’m a fussbudget so I'm probably not the average consumer. I wouldn't use them again for an heirloom, but if it were a run of the mill piece of furniture, then I would use them.

Workmanship was excellent and prompt. Mr. Matherlee was a very nice man.
Description of Work: I had a dining chair that was broken into many pieces. The chair has a very distinctive style and is no longer available for purchase so I would have had to buy all new chairs if it could not be fixed. Mr. Matherlee was not only able to fix it but you could not tell it had ever been broken. I was so pleased with his work that I brought the remaining 3 chairs to him to be have nicks and dings repaired from multiple moves. Total cost for 1 chair repaired and 3 refurbished was $250.

It went very well. Mike Menard had left a business card on my door which prompted me to check them out as my front doors were in terrible shape. Between a careless power washer who used too much bleach which sprayed on my doors when he was cleaning my sidewalks - and the western sun beating on the doors, they were really faded and looking terrible. I had sealed them once with Thompsons Water Seal and stain, but that did little good. Until I received the card I had not even thought of refinishing the doors - I thought my only option would be to replace them. After reviewing pictures of their work and reading the good reviews on Angie's List, I decided to hire them. I paid 50% down on a credit card and we set up the date, contingent on it being a nice day. The refinishing gave me new doors and they also removed and polished the hardware, which was dull and pitted. About a week after the job was completed I noticed a few spots on the doors that had not taken the stain as well as it might and they did return at a later date to touch up. It looks like I have brand new doors and they are beautiful! I give a "C" for punctuality because both times they were due out they were late and I had to call to be sure they were coming. In each instance they had been "delayed." I would have been fine with this information if they had simply called me first, but to have to wait and wonder is annoying, especially since I had three dogs I had to "corral" in the back while they were here. I couldn't be in back with the dogs and watching for them at the same time so it was a bit of a problem they could have avoided just by calling me.
Description of Work: My two front doors and side vent were stripped down to the wood, resealed and refinished. The hardware was also removed and polished.

Very well. They are both very fair and really know their antiques. I would not hesitate to recommend them for any furniture repair, large or small. please see addition added a few years later.
Description of Work: Mike and his partner came to fix an antique table, refinish a desktop, recondition a few leather chairs and repair various other small items. Mike had previously come for an emergency call after an antique armoire had fallen and the doors had broken off. He repaired the armoire and you would never even know that it had been severely damaged. He also refinished a friends kitchen and dining room tables and did a very good job. i am adding an update. I referred a friend to this company and my friend had a very bad experience. They took some of her items to the shop and never fixed or returned them. hen she could not get them to return her multiple calls, she asked me to please try to help her as I had referred her to them. They answered my call immediately and promised me that they would call her after hanging up with me and resolve the matter. I was at her house and waited and the call never came. It has now been several months and she has never received a call or gotten her items returned. Unfortunately, she had already paid in full and now has no recourse. I felt compelled to add this story to my earlier good review to warn others to be careful of this company. While I never had an issue with them, I feel responsible for my friend's unpleasant situation. At the very least, if you choose to use this company, do not ever pay them until work is completed.

Dave came out to our home and assessed the situation. He told us that we had a real antique, a Duncan Phyfe. He made recommendations on the types of repairs needed and the costs. We decided to have the pedestal repaired now and wait on the table top. He did an excellent job. He stained all of the pieces and repaired the pedestal in less than one week. When he brought the pieces back, he installed them and made some spot improvements to the top and to our chairs. It looked really nice when he was finished! We are proud to have it on display now.
Description of Work: I needed to have a pedestal from our dining set repaired. I also inquired about repairing the top of the table. It had several dents in to. We didn't know what kind of table we had. My Husband had received it used from a previous landlord.

They called me back right away and set up an appointment to look at the work. They arrived promptly and gave me an estimate. I agreed and they returned to do the work about a week later. It was fairly quick and I was very happy with the results. I would reccommend them to anyone who needs furniture repair.
Description of Work: They repainted baseboard molding and retouched the wood vanity in my bathroom. They also cleaned and polished the marble floor. These areas were damaged when a liquid air freshener spilled on the surfaces. The air freshener had eaten away the finish on these three surfaces. They did a great job of restoring to the previous new condition.

I called on l/18/11 to inquire if David would be able to accomplish such a job. He stopped at my condo that afternoon and was willing to do the job for the above price. He gave me an estimate of 3 to 4 days, I agreed on timeline and price, he took the lamp and I was extremely pleased when he called only 2 days later to say it was finished and he could drop it off that afternoon. The lamp looks exactly the same as it did when purchased about 40 years ago. I am not in the habit of hiring furniture refinishers so I do not know if my price was the best I could have gotten. I do know that I am very pleased with the work and would pay the same price again for that result.

I called this company to do surface repairs to high end wood furniture. David was prompt, courteous, professional, and honest. In fact, he was so honest, he told me he was uncomfortable doing one of the pieces for fear it would not meet my standards (the damage was a little more extensive on this piece). I was MOST appreciative of his honesty and not ruining one piece of a set just to line his pockets. Integrity goes a long way. Although I did not hire him, I would absolutely call him again with another job.

Great communication...ask them the questions you have, they will answer.
Description of Work: Dave and Mike came out to my home and repaired a bookshelf and desk top. They were damaged due to my own carelessness. I accidentally knocked over a big bottle of liquid potpourri and it splashed on my desktop and the bookshelf right next to it. Needless to say, it was acidic and ate away at those pieces..I was quite upset. They couldn't take the pieces with them back to their shop, which I guess they prefer to do, since they were so large. They came out to my home, gave me a free estimate and I later decided to use them. They came back out and spent about 2 hours repairing the damage. They were careful about the fumes and opened my windows in the room they were in and took precautions in everyway that I would think they would, too. This work was done over a month ago, and I am happy with the outcome. They did great work in my opinion. I discovered them by asking a local home decor/interior design place who they would recommend for this type of work, and they gave me their information and stated they had done work for their customers in the past, so that made me feel better about pursuing them for my needed work. They don't advertise much, it's mostly done through word of mouth, from what I was told.
