He left my house at 2:30pm and i paid 325.00 for the whole day. He said he travelled from Hollywood and that counted as all day. he also went to pick up stuff. He put in 3 fans in the house and 1 didn't work, fixed wiring in the attic. he never installed the Junction Box in any of the fan switches(could cause a fire).
Description of Work: installed 5 fans and a light fixure outside.

As I have used Wayne before, I knew I could count on him to be fast and the price would be fair. No problems, he showed up on time, worked fast and precise, did extra work that came up without a complaint. Great experience as always.
Description of Work: Exterior house painting with repair stucco and cracks, replace whole house water filter.
Wayne was on site within half an hour , analyzed the problem did a quick fix so we had water again, came back the next day to put in a permanent system. Great job !
Description of Work: Added filters to the whole house plumbing system
Hire tile company to do tile not handymen etc. A little more money well spent plus they have a licence.
Description of Work: We had originally contracted and paid money to Darren , who passed away before he could start the job of retiling two bathrooms (floor to ceiling) and replacing all fixtures, retiling the floor and putting in a glass block window.. Wayne, his brother, who took over said he would honor our investment and could do the job....fine. Originally I had written a glowing recommendation of him on Angies List. There are some things that I still think he (Wayne) did well. I think he followed my design idea pretty much to the letter. This part thrilled me (maybe too much) because the design was a little different and alot of tile contractors wanted to do it their way instead of mine. Plumbing in the shower was difficult and he did this very well. He also put in the sinks and toilets perfectly. I think Wayne really is a plumber. Probably a good one. This was in April. It was the first job that he had done (I think) since his brother died. It took two and a half months to complete the two bathrooms. This job was estimated by Darren to take two weeks. We pretty much realized that he was taking advantage of our laid back good nature. He would come every day, promptly at 7 and then be gone by 11 or 12n usually. At first it was ok because we realized he had to do some stuff for his brother. In the end we saw that he was just taking advantage of our being understanding about his brother passing, The first bathroom was done by a helper that I now realize probably had never done tiling before, Or if he had, not much, George. Now it's October. Hardly a tile in either bathroom is sticking to the backing floor. Grout is falling out and cracking all over. We hired Universal Tile (also from Angies list) to fix the problem. Now they are skilled but we had to pay them 1000 dollars to fix this horrible tile job. We had wanted the bathroom floor to be even with the hall floor so Wayne took out the tile rather than put more tile over existing tile, He busted out the concrete underneath and put down plywood and versabond . From subsesquent research and the million people that came here for the estimates to fix this problem we learned that concrete was supposed to be under the tile. This gives your tile a solid back. Not one that moves with each step. This was a really difficult job for him. I remember that day . He worked hard and it was one of the days he worked a full day. He obviously didn't know that it was unnecessary and, in fact, detrimental to remove all the concrete without replacing it. From this I also realize he didn't know what he was doing or just didn't want to take that extra step to replace the concrete. Every tile contractor that has come to give us and estimate on redoing the grout says the same thing . This is a really really horrible tile job. Not only was the consistency of the grout wrong (hence the cracking and no adhesion) but the tiles themselves were set really sloppy and haphazard, probably trying to cover too large an area at one time, causing the grout to get too dry and then overwetting it to make it look good until it cured, no attention to detail. Grout is totally uneven. Plastered thick between tiles in some spots and thin almost non exsistent in others If you put your head against the tile and look along the wall it looks like ripples in a stream . Wayne did come back twice to touch up some places. By that time I had started my research (it's hard to lie to customers in the computer age) and knew what caused most of the problems but he kept saying that "all grout cracks". This was so obviously wrong from every source I investigated (check it out yourself) that it made me mad he would try to bs me. Or he really believed this (in which case further evidence he was totally unequal to the job - doesn't even know that not all tile grout cracks - although I'm sure all of his does). Universal Tile is in my bathrooms now , injecting an epoxy into the floor. A special epoxy that hopefully will adhere the tiles to the plywood. We are hoping that this will make up for the lack of concrete under the floor. Next step is to tear up the floor and replace the concrete.........Lesson : You really do get what you pay for Hire Universal Tile they are really professional, clean, know tile, and as a bonus don't smoke so there is not that run for the door every half hour to smoke. Then back in stinking up your house. Cost a little more but remember the lesson. The guys who did my tile Juan and Carlos. So clean and polite. Totally knowledgable. Juan was the only guy that did the filling of the bathtub like it said in so many places on the internet and on Holmes on Holmes on HGTV. These guys are real 'old school' when it comes to skills.
I hired Wayne Chicka based on his Angie's List rating and am very satisfied with the results of their work. My house was built in the mid 1960's and needed work done on both bathrooms. i was worried about possible plumbing problems with the larger of the two bathrooms, so the work on that one was more extensive. I had them knock out all of the old tile and dry wall - taking it down to the concrete and support beams. One of the support studs had significant deterioration so Wayne and his assistant, Alex, replaced the beam, fixed the plumbing issue and installed new cement-based, water proof dry wall and retiled the bathroom. They also replaced the flooring, the vanity, medicine cabinet and lighting. They also replaced the flooring, vanity medicine cabinet and lighting in the smaller bathroom. They did a beautiful job and I'm very happy with both bathrooms. On the basis of the work they had done on the bathrooms, I had them upgrade my kitchen - again with very good results - they replaced the kitchen cabinets, flooring, counter-tops, back-splash and lighting and again I'm very pleased with the result. I also had them replaced the gutters - they were deteriorating and not at all conducive to 'curb appeal'. The boards behind the gutters were in bad shape and needed to be replaced, which Wayne did. The new gutters are now much more functional and attractive. All work was done in accord with the budget based on their estimates. Wayne and Alex were very conscientious and professional. I am very satisfied with their work and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: jRenovate two bathrooms - one from the concrete out. Renovate kitchen - new lighting, flooring cabinets, countertop, backsplash.I hired Wayne Chicka based on his Angie's List recommendation and am very satisfied with the results of their work. My house was built in the mid 1960's and needed work done on both bathrooms. I was worried about possible plumbing problems with the larger of the bathrooms so the work on that one was more extensive- On the basis of the work they had done on the bathrooms, I had them upgrade the kitchen - new kitchen cabinets, flooring, counter-tops, back-splash and lighting. I also had them replace my gutters which were badly in need of replacement.
Wayne told us that he charged $50 for an estimate. He said he would deduct that amount from the job if we hired him. Wayne and another man showed up on time to assess the job. The second man had a paper pad and pen, but never wrote anything down. after we went all through the house and showed them what we wanted done, Wayne asked me for my four pages of notes instead of taking his own. I gave him my own notes as I knew what all we needed done. Wayne told us he could start October 1st. Wayne said that he would get back to us in a couple days with the estimate. It's now been two weeks and we never heard from them again. We paid them $50 by personal check, which they found time to cash. We have never received our estimate. They are unprofessional and unreliable and I would not waste your time with them. We hope they enjoyed dinner on us!
Description of Work: We requested an estimate for a lot of remodeling in an older home we just purchased.
Punctual all the way...came by for estimate right on time and right on time for work. Very efficient, friendly, and professional. Got the work done quickly and with no fuss. Good guys and easy to deal with. Great price as well. I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Had some cracked floor tiles in two rooms that needed replaced, and some drywall & baseboard repair.

My wife and I decided to purchase a new washer and dryer Only one problem, the area where they go was too short to fit them in. (This area of our garage was raised 6'' above the garage floor level and we needed to extend it out another 6"s. ) We obtained 4 quotes from professionals in this type of work. They ranged in prices from $1,000 on the high end to $200 on the low side. We selected Renovations by Darren to perform the work and not just because they offered the best price. What we particularly liked was that Wayne Chicka seemed to really know what he was talking about and that we felt we weren't being scammed. Wayne and his assistant Alex came out on a Saturday and gave us their estimate and on the following Tuesday they came out and started and finished the job that same day.The work was done in a highly professional manner and when finished not a trace was left of their ever being there. The moral of this story is that you need to get several estimates of any work you need done especially here in Florida where unscrupulous contractors seem to abound. Also it pays to read all of the comments about a particular company as found in Angie's List before deciding whom to select. We did and it sure payed off in chosing Rennovations by Darren.
Description of Work: We needed a concrete extension in laundry area in garage in order to accomodate a new washer and dryer.
I was on vacation during all of this work so I was able to be at home while the work was being done. I suggest that the person who actually hires contractors try to be at home when the work is being done since the installers need your input while their work is being done. Also, they have questions that you need to answer immediately so that their job can be done efficiently and quickly. I had several minor modifications I asked Wayne to make as he did his work. Wayne made each change when I asked for them. He also offered a few suggestions such as the tile I was going to use for an accent and placement of the tile, etc. which were very helpful. Wayne and Alex worked right though the day without really taking a scheduled break. They worked carefully and quickly. I would definitely hire Wayne again for any home improvement jobs that I could not do well by myself.
Description of Work: Innovations by Darren is now owned and operated by his brother Wayne. On Wednesday, June 16th Wayne came to do an estimate of remodeling work I wanted done in my two bathrooms in my condo here in Weston: New tile in both bathrooms. Shower walls and bathtub walls replaced with "durorock". Plumbing behind the walls had to have some work done on it for the new shower heads and faucets. Vanities in both bathrooms were replaced with new faucets. Toilets had to be replaced. Wayne started work on one bathroom on June 20th, Monday, and basically finished on Friday June 24th. His assistant, Alex, was there to work side by side with Wayne throughout the whole week. They tore down the old bathroom walls broke up the old vanities, put up the new walls, and laid the new tile. Wayne consulted with me as the work went on to be sure I got the what I wanted. Wayne started work on the second bathroom on Monday, June 27th and finished on Thursday, June 30th. While all of this work was going on the vanities were delivered and the toilets had to be picked up from Home Depot. Wayne and Alex gladly accommodated me by picking up the toilets and delivering them to my third floor condo. Actually, one of the toilets was not what I had paid for. Before I discovered that one of the toilets was not what I had ordered, Wayne had already installed it. Once I realized it was the wrong toilet, Wayne, Alex, and I returned to Home Depot and exchanged it for the correct one. Wayne had to take out the "wrong" toilet and install the "correct" one, which he gladly did. I certainly appreciated his flexibility.

See above. Needed bedroom and Master bath renovation done, . Previous contracter had done demo and given estimates, but was asked to leave after having strangers call me demandig money for work that wasnt even done yet! So I realy really thought I had found a pot of gold in this superior provider on angies list. Wow was I wrong. He hasnt called to this day, three weeks after the estimate and after my numerous calls to him.
Description of Work: I called Wayne SOLELY based on Angies list recommendation. I should have paid attention to the first F this person recieved. I figured I would give him the benefit of the doubt, surely he wouldnt leave someone high and dry TWICE and NEVER call them back nor answer phone calls after coming out to do an estimate and telling me "I will get back to you with the estimate in a couple of days, but he DID just that" The first appt. he made to come out Saturday at noon was forgotten about by him. Noon came and went. I decided to be understading of this "superior" guy. I called around 1pm and mentioned he was supposed to come out to do the estimate. He said "oh" acted slightly surprised then said he would come around 3 or 4pm. I stayed home and waited (by then all day) Then he called back two hours later and said he was finishing a job and that he couldnt possibly leave and would come anytime I said the next day. He came over the next day early and listened to me tell him I had gotten other estimates, had the demo done, and the previous contractor started having strangers call me demanding money for work he hadnt even begun yet! I was very nervous about this behavior of the old contractor and knew I needed a new contractor I could trust and who was professional. He knew I was sick, possibly from the black mold found during the demo, and since my bedroom was demo'd I was sleeping on the couch, in other words totally waiting on him to get my life back!. A week went by, I called and asked where his estimate was. No answer, no response. Another week started I called again saying he told me that he would call me back in a couple days ad I was still waitig. 0 calls, 0 responses. I know realized aother uncaring, unprofessional peroson has wasted my time, and to boot made me angry I had ever singed up for angies list or his services. Absolutely uncalled for. His behavior showed he didt care at all, about me or the work. Do people get complacent once they think they are a TOP PROVIDER ON HERE? AM considering getting my moey back from Angies List.
This bathroom is fabulous!!!! Wayne completely demo'd the entire bathroom. Rerouted the plumbing and the electrical. Replaced toilet, cabinets, mirrors, sinks and tile. He made a terrific built in to put the sink on because I told him I wanted the pipes for the sink to come out of the wall so the floor is open and easy to clean. Also, this bathroom was so small that the commercial under sink cabinet doors would almost hit the toilet when you opened them. The built in is from side to side, but not on the floor and has sliding doors rather than hinged. Completely solved these problems. I also had a problem with the door leading from the bathroom. It hit another door when it was opened. Wayne put up a wall mounted door. It slides. Another terrific solution! I'll keep you posted about the next bathroom! I can't wait. Wayne's done a stellar job. I'm sure brother Darren is up there smilin'.
Description of Work: We are all saddened by the sudden passing of Darren Chicka of Rennovations by Darren. We had just contracted Darren to remodel two bathrooms in our house. Both bathrooms needed total demolition (right down to the studs), Extensive plumbing and electrical and then retiling from floor to ceiling also replacing all fixtures, faucets and toilets. Darren told us that he would call us in two weeks (as soon as he was finished with his current job). Two weeks came and went and then it was three weeks. We grew concerned because Darren and his partner( who is also his brother), Wayne, had never failed to call us for anything when they had worked for us before. Darren and Wayne had installed an air conditioner and rennovated the old A/C location. They did it on short notice and on a Saturday because our daughter was coming for a visit unexpectedly and the old A/C sounded like a hurricane. We called them because our neighbor was so pleased with the work they had done in her house and the positive recommendations they had received on Angies List. They are really nice guys and highly skilled in so many areas. I digress. We called Darrens number and Wayne told us the sad news. After accepting our condolences, Wayne told us that he will be continuing on with the business and honoring fees collected by Darren on pending work. That was about two weeks ago. We now have one of our bathrooms completely redone!! Wayne is indeed carrying on the tradition of Darren. Professional work at a fair price. He comes EARLY and ON TIME. Two things worth their weight in gold if you've ever tried to get things done down here in Florida. Works like a demon all the time he's here. Communicates clearly ( had some really great design ideas for my 1945 pink and maroon bathroom) His expectations (for example his fees and the time frame of expected completion) all clearly stated. As well as our expectations. So we are all always on the same page. Wayne doesn't even bat an eye when I ask him to change things back (after I asked him to change them in the first place!). This actually happened when I asked him to swap two huge mirrors that I had originally wanted on opposite walls! This bathroom is fabulous. I wish I had taken pictures. I'll make sure that I do for the next part of our rennovation. The other bathroom. I would recommend Wayne for any home improvement or remodeling task. He's reliable , professional and skilled.

Wow...thank you a million times. In all my years of doing this type of work, I have received some wonderful reviews and comments. However, this far surpasses any compliments ever given to both me and my brother. When I say thank you very much, I am speaking both from Darren and myself. He would have been so overwhelmed not only by your compliments but by your eulogy of him as well. It is certainly our pleasure to be working for you at your beautiful home. Your patience and understanding of the emotionally upsetting feeling I was experiencing with the loss of my dear brother, certainly has helped me get through these trying times. Your kindness and the considerations, including always having a cold drink available for myself and my helper are very much appreciated. Renovations, no matter how large or small always cause an inconvenience, especially for the home owner. Your patience and understanding with all of the dust and other particles in your way during our working time made this job such a pleasure to work on. I am looking forward to beginning your other bathroom and excited about the end result. My brother Darren was right on the money when he told me that he had the best customers and clients in the State of Florida. With his great reputation and his personality he discovered that ultimately his customers became some of his most treasured friends. I look forward to carrying on the great traditions of my brother and hopefully developing the same relationships that he did with everyone. Rest assured that Renovations By Darren, although now considered Renovations by Darren and Wayne, stands behind their work and will continue to provide the excellent service this company has provided in the past. Darren is and will always be still the Boss as he is now watching over, protecting and yes still supervising me from Heaven above. Thank you again so very much.

Concerns: - Bit of a rude, snappy attitude - Constantly saying your job will be next but not committing to any real timeline - Seemed to expect me to just queue up and be appreciative when he becomes available - Became openly annoyed with me when I told him I had completed some of the tasks because I couldn't wait any longer for him - Considering all the above, his pricing is decent but nothing so cheap that anyone should put up with his attitude - I'm mystified by all these positive reviews. Maybe I got him on a bad week.

Description of Work: We contacted Darren to see if he could repair the installation of a wood floor in a physician's office. It was a terrible job and it was dangerous for patients. He came out quickly and explained all the options we had. We chose to replace the floor and it looks great now. It was done quickly and it is exactly how we wanted it.

I picked Darren from Angie's List because of all the positive reviews he had, and I am glad I did. My wife and I had originally set out to do a complete remodel of our kitchen, but with quotes coming back upwards of $30k we knew we would have to take out a serious loan to get the work done, which we we're not comfortable with at this time. So, we decided to do a quick and cheap remodeling facelift. We kept our existing cabinets and I refinished the countertops and put in a new sink. What I could not do was drywall the ceiling and tear out the existing pass through wall. I told Darren that we wanted a quick and cheap remodel and he was able to accommodate with exactly what we needed. From the day he came by to provide a quote to the day they finished, they were on time (or early) each day. They worked quickly, acted professionally, and were generally very nice people. Having good people in our home is priority #1 to us. If you can't trust someone then there is nothing else that is going to make up for that. We were confident when we left for work each day and delighted each evening when we got home to see the progress. Darren provided me with a great quote based on the work we wanted done and he stuck to it, even though I threw a couple of other small tasks his way once they showed up to do the work. In fact, his price was at least half as much as the next competing quote that I received. And we sure got our money's worth. The kitchen looks fantastic and virtually brand new. Including the work Darren did, the work I did, and new appliances, the total for the job was under $6000, and we couldn't be happier. It was like one of those budget remodeling shows on HGTV except less annoying. The fit and finish may not have been showroom quality but perfect for something we're living in day to day. Had I wanted absolute, magazine quality perfection I would have paid Darren more to do just that. For our budget and needs, what we received was FANTASTIC! The new ceiling looks great, including the soffit they built around the top of the cabinets and some copper piping, new light fixtures, and paint. The walkthrough from the kitchen to the dining room is great and they put in a wood threshold to cover the gap in the tile from where the wall used to be. They even stained the wood to match our teak dining table. They also built, on request, a small, matching wood shelf on the end corner of the wall where we could keep the home phone, keys, etc. I mentioned the shelf idea to him, almost in passing, and he went ahead and built it! Wonderful service! At the end of the job, Darren pledged that if we had any problems with the work that he would come back and fix it, and I believe him. We have several other projects to be completed in the future and we will definitely be calling Darren back up. Good service, good price, good people.
Description of Work: A quick face lift of our condo kitchen including replacing an old, fluorescent dome style ceiling, taking our a breakfast bar and accompanying wall to make a walk through from kitchen to dining room, putting up some glass mosaic backsplash tile, painting, and a few other touches.

We are disappointed that you have decided to degrade Renovations By Darren. Based on today's economic situation it is extremely costly to take on jobs that require travel time as gas prices have escalated. We are a small company and do not beleive charging our customers over and above work performed. At the time you called, we were backed up with open projects and tried our best to assist you with your needs. The company reputation speaks for itself and we do apologize if you were given the wrong impression of us. We wish you the best with your future projects
Job took about 3 weeks from start to finish , came in within budget, no problems in taking on some extra work. All work was finished way above expectations. I will use them again if possible int he future for all remodeling jobs. Thanks Darren and Wayne for an outstanding job.

Company was contacted and date was set to come out for assessment and estimate. The terms were agreed and the work was started 2 days later and completed in one day because he came early in am and on time.I informed him of exactly what I wanted done and he gave me a price that I felt was fair. I am so glad that I was able to find a reputable and professional company through Angie's List. I would refer him to anyone looking for his services.
Description of Work: Painted the interior living room, dining room area, hall area and four interior doors on both sides. My house is not very large so the work was completed in one day. Everything went really well and the doors are both operating perfectly. Darren showed up as promised (a rarity in Florida!) and performed most of the work in one day. A few parts had to be ordered and he returned to complete the job. Initially, I wanted him to replace rotten wood on a door leading outside from the garage but when he took a closer look he advised me it wouldn't be worthwhile due to extensive rot on the frame. I appreciated his honesty and will contact him in the future to replace the whole door.
Description of Work: The door leading into the house from the garage was replaced. A new frame, hardware, and hinges were installed. Repairs on an existing patio screen door, including a new door closure, weather strip, and sealing, were also completed.

He never contacted me to follow up and come by for an estimate.
Description of Work: I phoned Darren to set up an appointment for him to come by and take a look at what needed to be done, and told him I wanted to start with a few things(doors, closet door, maybe some sink repair) and that I had more that needed to be done in the future..He was busy, and I said that's all right as I was thinking of having him come by in 1&1/2 to 2 weeks to get an estimate. He said he'd phone me that weekend to set up a day and time to come by.He phoned that weekend to tell me he'd call later in the week. He never contacted me.

Darren was very responsive from beginning to end-he returned all calls promptly and showed up exactly when he said he would. He advised daily of his progress and disclosed any potential problem areas as he went along. When I had concerns after the job was completed (this particular garage/room is designated as the dog room and there are urine issues) he even volunteered to come back in 30 days and put another coat of sealant on the floor--he is truly fantastic!!
Description of Work: Removed ceramic tile from garage floor and replaced with epoxy finish and then sealed.

I called and spoke to Darren and explained to him that I was looking for durable but inexpensive laminate flooring. I also told him that I have a 2-1 1/2 BDR townhouse. He asked in what location and I said North Miami. Then he said in his own words "I hate to do this but, I suggest you call Dolphin Carpet since its going to be at least $400.00 for the nose on the edge of the stairs since I wanted wooden stairs" Never at any point did he ask what my budget was. Didn't event suggest to come out and take a look at the space. I finished the conversation with " I appreciate your honesty". Thank you and bye.

Response from Renovations By Darren
If being honest warrants a D from this person, then so be it. My work speaks for itself and anyone who reads the reports understands that it is impossible to give someone a D just from a phone conversation with someone who was up front and honest. I wish this person good luck with the renovations.
