Description of Work: I called Kurt to provide an evaluation for installing solar panels for both our home and workshop and he was very prompt and came out the same day that I called. Unfortunately our property is not a good candidate for solar and Kurt was very open and honest about what the best outcome would be for our situation. I appreciated his honesty and he was also very informative and educational about solar and what to expect from that type of power solution. i would definitely recommend him for anyone thinking about moving to solar.

Kurt was very responsive and professional. He came when needed and coordinated his work with the roofers. Because the new roof was metal the pool panels required some extra attention so that they would remain flat. Kurt researched the best way to reinstall them, obtained the necessary materials, and did an excellent job of getting them installed so that they will function as they should. We found a small leak after he was finished and he very promptly came back and fixed the leak without charge. All in all we were very happy with Kurt's work.
Description of Work: Kurt removed the solar pool heater panels and the solar hot water panel from the roof in preparation for a new roof. He then reinstalled the panels then the roof was finished. In addition he straightened out the piping for the solar hot water heater in the attic so that the panel now drains back as it should. The original installer did not pipe it correctly and still didn't get it right after having to replace the panel because it froze over the winter and started leaking.

Kurt Johnsen was prompt, professional, he was personally on the job doing the work (didn't send someone else). I don't know electrical work, but the window is beautiful, my electric bill is 20% of what it used to be, All the work looks good, Kurt maintained a clean workplace, I was never inconvenienced. Kurt did the job for what he bid, there were no hidden expenses. I especially liked that he consulted with me all throughout the job about my needs and how I wanted things (like where the solar panels would go, we eventually decided to cut down a tree after considering all the options). I have seen other solar installations and my looks neat and attractive. One other solar company told me they wouldn't even come and bid the job because my panels are out in the field instead of on the roof (my house is in the shade). Mr Johnsen even advised me against solar hot water because there are only two of us living here and my usage is low. He could have had more work at my expense. I appreciated his honesty. He looked out for my best interest. All together the job took almost four months, and there were different phases of it. Kurt Johnsen had excellent references. I have had other work done in this home, by other contractors, carpeting and tile laid down, for example, and the workmanship was shoddy and I am very unhappy with the job. I made the mistake of going with the cheapest I could find. Kurt Johnsen was not the cheapest guy out there, but his pricing was fair and reasonable, and I am still thrilled with the work he did two years later.
Description of Work: Kurt Johnsen installed a solar panel system so I now have solar electric supplying about 80% of my electric. He tied it in to my existing electrical system, and buried a cable that was going to my house, and combined two electrical meters into one and removed a light pole from the lawn. He installed a nine foot window in a wall where there had been none. He also insulated the top of the house, taping and sealing every light fixture in the ceiling and sealing the entire attic, which made a noticeable difference in how well I could heat and cool the house. He put vents in the attic so it wouldn't get so hot in the summer. He also installed a fireplace insert so I can heat the house with wood if I choose.

Kurt assured us that the repairs that needed to be done (except for the roof) were minor and par for the course for properties in Gainseville FL. We will be installing the new roof the last week in July. Kurt's knowledge of the field led us to Shane and his company Atlantic Roofing and Interiors. We are hoping all goes well.
Description of Work: Kurt came to our house to consult with us about our home for free. We had some minor issues in addition to a leak in our roof -- while Kurt's expertise is home remodelling, he went above and beyond the call of duty to help us determine which issues needed immediate attention. Ultimately he concluded that the roof needed to be replaced. We discussed with Kurt the fact that we have considerable budget constraints due to a child with special needs and he went out of his way to help us find a roofer who will do the job while keeping the project within our budget. We will report back to you about Shane and his company Atlantic Roofing and Interiors when the job is complete. We are really thankful for Kurt's diligence! Thank you.

Kurt came to the house, we drew up plans (this was the most difficult part because I didn't really know what I wanted or what things would cost or what materials were available). It took him about two months to put the kitchen in. He tore out almost everything, left some of the lower cabinets structure, I was living out of the bedroom for a while. I did some of the painting myself after he was finished, partly because I couldn't decide on a color, but it also helped keep costs down somewhat. Then about six months later I called him to discuss solar panels. I called several places. one company wouldn't even talk to me because it wasn't a typical roof installation. He was very knowledgeable and told me costs and usage. He told me how to calculate my average electrical usage. Clay electric also helped with that. I decided to do less than 100% of my needs for several reasons. Kurt was also very knowledgeable about the tax rebate which knocked about a third off the price. After the solar panels were in, my electric bills were lower, but I decided to insulate the attic on Kurt's recommendation. Then my husband and I purchased a fireplace insert and Kurt helped install it.
Description of Work: Kurt remodeled my kitchen, built custom cabinets and was very patient and knowledgeable in helping me figure out what I wanted. He was flexible about changing or adding things as we went. He ended up building cabinets and shelves and tiling my counters, installing a new sink, and changing some electric, and installing some new appliances. My new kitchen is absolutely beautiful!! perfectly fits the space and my home and me. He's an artist. Then I found out he was also a solar contractor and so he installed solar panels for me. My home is in the shade so he had to put them in a field and run lines to the house. I have 16 panels and that covers about 80% of my electric needs (and I love air conditioning). He helped me install a fireplace insert that further helps me save money in the winter. My house is now toasty when it's cold outside. In addition, he insulated my attic which cuts down on energy usage and keeps the house more comfortable. While he was in the attic, he fixed a lot of problems created by prior "handymen" who did shoddy (not to mention dangerous) work. All in all for all this I spent just over $40,000 and with the tax rebate for the solar and the lower electric bills I'll get about half of that back over the coming years (although it is a long term investment). I really liked having Kurt as a knowledgeable resource who could accurately inform me about all my options and comparative costs so I could make decisions that were right for me.
Kurt met with my husband and I to discuss the project. I had had two other estimates from other builders which were higher than we wanted to spend. After our initial meeting where we gave our needs for the room, Kurt came back with an estimate of about $2000 below the previous bids. We agreed to a time and materials contract and the completed project came in under the estimate! Kurt took care of all permits, arranged for inspections, hiring and supervising workers, He subcontracted out the electrical but did most of the other work himself. He is a perfectionist and his work shows it. He cleaned and swept up every night keeping dust and clutter to a minimum. He finished in a timely fashion and the addition blends beautifully with the house. I highly recommend him and would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: Build a 12' x 20' addition to existing home. to include roof extension, walls, windows, door, flooring, drywall, outlets and ceiling and outdoor lights, with exterior siding to match existing structure.
