My unit went down, and I contacted a company that I found in a coupon pack that I received via mail. The company advertised a free inspection and estimate, so I figured I would take advantage of those services to see how much it would cost to get my unit up and running. A representative from the company came to my home and performed an inspection. He told me that multiple items were faulty (motor, capacitor, relay) and that I should consider replacing my system due to its age. I was shocked when he handed me an estimate for $750. I told him that I would weigh my opitions and get back to him with a decision. I placed a call to the distribution center for my equipment (Ruud) to get some additional information regarding my unit. After giving the representative my unit information, he suggested that I get a second opinion on that repair. He provided me with the telephone number for Travis Refrigeration and A/C. He said that the guys who own the company are really sharp, and they have decent prices. I placed a call and set up an appointment for the following day. The technician, Andy, arrived on time and asked me to describe the symptoms. After a brief discussion, Andy went to the unit to perform an inspection. It took him about 30 minutes to diagnose the problem, which was a bad capacitor. I quickly retrieved the quote that I received from the first company to compare notes with Andy's findings. After a brief chuckle, Andy explained that some companies pay their techs commision based on the number of parts that they sell. We discussed how that practice compromises the integrity of the repair. When I inquired about the cost of the repair, he stated that it would be about $100 and he could give me an exact figure after he wrote up a quote. I instructed him to disregard the quote, and complete the repair. 15 minutes later, my air was up and running. I was very glad to deal with an easy going guy like Andy, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his company to anyone in need of service.
Description of Work: The technician replaced a capacitor. He was on site for about an hour.
