In the early 1970’s Mike Joyce and his partner, college students at the time, began buying and selling coins in Tampa, Florida. From humble beginnings in a single wide trailer, Gulfcoast Coin Brokers was born. In 1975, Gulfcoast Coin Brokers opened its doors in Fort Myers, Florida dealing in rare coins, paper money, silver dollars, and gold coins. Gulfcoast also became dealers in all U.S. Mint products including proof sets, mint sets, stamps and paper money.
As the precious metals boomed, Gulfcoast Coin Brokers became, and still continues to be, a major bullion dealer in South African Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leaves, Austrian 100 Coronas, Mexican 50 Pesos, Chinese Pandas, Platinum Nobles, as well as gold and platinum bars. Gulfcoast has also made a market in silver bullion, U.S. 90% silver coins, 100oz. bars, 10oz. bars and 1oz. bars, war nickels, Franklin Mint silver, and all types of sterling flatware and hollowware.
There was monumental growth and a name change to Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry in the 1980’s as Denise Joyce expanded the fine jewelry department dramatically, and made Gulfcoast one of the major jewelry stores in Southwest Florida. She also became a master appraiser of diamonds and is frequently called upon by attorneys, insurance companies, banks and, of course, families for her appraisal services.
Gulfcoast maintains a large inventory of diamonds, both loose and mounted, and specializes in certified stones, graded by prestigious gem labs, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or EGL (European Gem Laboratory). Due to their long standing reputation as serious dealers in gems, and the practice of constantly buying from estates, banks, auctions and the public, they are known for offering diamonds and gemstones at very favorably discounted prices along with a large inventory of formerly owned Rolex watches.
The 1980’s was also the advent of the third party coin grading. Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry became members of the Professional Coin Grading Service and the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation which allowed Gulfcoast’s rare coin collectors and investors the ability to purchase coins which are certified as to their grade and their authenticity.
Other events that occurred in the 1980’s included Mike Joyce’s nomination into the Prestigious Professional Numismatic Guild. (To become a member of PNG, a person must go through character and financial scrutiny before being voted in by existing members.) PNG has been in existence since before 1960 and there are approximately less than 850 members in PNG World-wide. In 1986, the U.S. Government started the American Eagle program. Gulfcoast is a major market maker in Gold American Eagles, Silver American Eagles, and Platinum American Eagles creating a two-way market buying and selling.
In the early 1990’s, Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry opened its first auction gallery. This was implemented in order to bring intelligent buyers and sellers of rare coins, diamonds, estate jewelry, fine art, stamps and all quality collectibles together. They now have two state-of- the-art galleries, one in Fort Myers and one in Bonita Springs. Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry is one of the few auction houses with the ability to hold both an in-house auction and simultaneously broadcast live on the internet with audio and video. This gives the consignors access to an enormous international market of buyers, and because of the extensive marketing efforts of Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry, the consignors have the opportunity to receive the highest possible prices for their valuables. Gulfcoast is always seeking and buying estate jewelry, especially pieces from Tiffany, Van Clef & Arpels, Cartier, David Webb, and George Jensen. They also deal in watches from Rolex, Vacheron Constantine, Piaget, Patek Philippe, vintage pocket watches, Victorian jewelry, cameos, art deco and art nouveau jewelry, etc.
Gulfcoast also has an experienced research staff and full appraisal services by members of the International Society of Appraisers (I.S.A). They maintain a constantly expanding mailing list of more than 17,000 names and advertise aggressively in Lee, Charlotte and Collier counties.
With over three decades of experience in the business of buying, selling, appraising, and auctioning, Gulfcoast Coin & Jewelry, LLC is where the educated consumer conducts business and offers an exciting marketplace to the Southwest Florida population.
