Interior Specialty Products

This started off okay, but ended up being a nightmare. The company was highly recommended by a contractor friend of mine (who has now stopped working with them). The owner came out to the house to give me an estimate on the project. He was very pushy about ordering immediately, but I felt that due to the recommendation that was okay; I still took a few days to think about it, since the price was in the middle of the other estimates I'd gotten. I paid half down, with the other half due on completion. They came a week later to install, so I got off work. It turns out the glass distributor they work with gave them a piece that was cut wrong, so they couldn't do the installation. I said it wasn't a big deal, although of course it meant a week delay and another few hours off work to have it installed again. The next week they installed the glass, gotten on a rush order. Again, I thought that was great. It was fast, they were nice about it, etc. I paid the bill after they were finished, and assumed everything was okay. I waited the 24 hours they suggested to let the glue dry, then polished the glass like they suggested. A few hours later, I woke up to a loud crack from the bathroom. The glass near the hinge had a big (6" or so) crack in it. That's bad enough, but that crack meant that they hadn't used tempered glass. If you don't know, tempered glass must be in almost all products: table tops, closet doors, many mirrors, and ANYTHING in a "wet" area, like a bathroom. Windows are more expensive for bathrooms, medicine cabinets, etc. Non-tempered glass is very dangerous, especially near slippery floors or water. This door was around 100 lbs of glass, and could easily have seriously hurt or even killed us had we fallen into it, or had it broken while I was polishing the glass. Extremely dangerous. They came out the next day, Sunday, to remove it, and I said I wanted to have the materials refunded and a new door installed. They ordered a new door. When they wanted to install, I asked for insurance verification in case something went wrong, and a license. They wouldn't give either until after the job was done! That is against Florida regulations. When I complained and said I needed that before any work was done, I was threatened with the statement that they had not gotten the required permits, and so I was liable (not the case; they didn't get permits, but that means they were doing something illegal and could have their license revoked; I can always file for a permit retroactively). They've refused to give the documentation, and refused to take down the work and refund the money (which is what the offered in a phone conversation, before yelling at me for around 10 minutes). This is one of the least professional and most dangerous companies I've ever worked with, and I'm renovating my third house. Be careful!
