Signed a contract for Doug Scott Custom Homes to build my house. Based the decision on a beautiful model home in Palm Bay. He estimated approx 6 months building time. Actual build time was just under a year. He did some of the work himself and sub-contracted the rest. Everything he did was done poorly. All the sub-contractors did good work (the plaster, the roof, electrical, plumbing) He and his wife painted the house and did a sloppy job. They hung all the crown molding and it does not line up right. You can see all the seams. He was initially using the wrong set of plans and forgot to build a wall. The wall had to be added later and could not be put in the correct location. It changed the size and design of the dining room. Having the wrong set of plans resulted in the slab being poured incorrectly. These mistakes had to be corrected after the fact. Not sure what the long term implication of that will be All of the pocket doors were hung incorrectly and had to be re-adjusted (his work again) All of the closet doors came off their rails when opened and had to be re-adjusted (D.S. again) The contract stated a $2500.00 allowance for appliances. I bought the appliances and he never reimbursed me. I had to pay for and install the countertops because he refused to do granite counters. He agreed to reimburse me what his cost would have been. I got an estimate from a countertop vendor that HE selected. Never got reimbursed. I got phone calls from several of the sub-contractors for months after I moved in asking when Doug Scott was going to pay them. (I told them to join the club) He did not sod my entire yard. The contract had a maximum sod "allowance". He never came to me and said he needed to buy more sod. Technically, I would have had to pay for it. To be honest, if he had, I would have told him to take it out of the money he already owed me (appliances, countertops). Guess he did not want to go down that road. Doug Scott does not build houses any more. He runs a lawn care business. BUT, with the housing market slowly recovering, I fear he may get back in the business. You were warned!
