I was provided an estimate of $125-180 to move a 4 person spa 6 miles and was told I could pay by charge, check or cash. I asked about the necessity of 3 movers and was assured by 'Freddie' at Florida Family Movers that 2 movers would be fine for a 350-400 pound spa. The 2 men arrived on time. Because the spa was more than they could easily handle, it took a great deal of effort for them to get it on the truck. The couple I was getting the spa from, watched them move it. During the move to the truck they saw the movers knock a corner piece off. The wife told the movers they had knocked the piece off and the movers picked it up and took it with them.
The delivery at my end was much easier as they could back up the truck to the lanai. The movers told me they required payment and signature before they could remove anything from the truck. The payment was more than $100 over the estimate. I had planned to pay by charge and was informed that to pay by charge there was an additional $15 fee. I called Florida Family Movers to find out why the cost was so much higher than the estimate, and why I hadn't been informed of the charge fee ahead of time. They were sorry I apparently hadn't been informed. The movers said they could wait if I needed to go to the bank to get more cash. When they removed the spa from the truck, I noticed a side panel was out. One of the movers informed me that all the side panels come out, they had it on the truck, and they would put it back in. Because they had run so late, it ran into a conference call I had scheduled. The movers quickly departed as I took my call.
After I finished my conference, I went out to put the cover on. At that point I noticed #1 a missing corner piece, and #2 the side panel they replaced was jammed in upside down and crooked. I couldn't move the piece to get it out and properly installed. After talking to the couple to find out if they knew what happened, I immediately called Florida Family Movers and got an answering machine. I left a message stating that the missing piece was apparently left on the truck and I needed it dropped off and I needed the side panel to be properly installed. After the call, I noticed that the jammed side panel was also scratched.
Things went downhill from there. The logistics manager for the Villages location, Freddie, told me the movers told him they had pointed out the missing piece to the couple when they picked up the spa, so it was prior damage and there was nothing he could do about it. I told him when I had seen the spa originally, there was no damage or missing pieces. The couple were the original owners. The spa was only 5 years old and had never been moved since the original delivery. Plus the couple had seen and spoken to the movers about the knocked off piece during the pick up. I asked Freddie to call the couple to get their version not just mine. Freddie finally agreed to call the couple and come look at the spa. Freddie talked to the couple 3 times and got the same story I had explained. He never showed up to see the spa. When I called to find out what happened Freddie told me he was told by the owner that "I had signed for the delivery and he was not suppose to come out to see the damage". I told him I had been required to pay and sign for the delivery before they would even take it off the truck, so how could anyone see damage under those circumstances. He had no response to that.
Freddie wasn't returning any of my phone calls. I sent a letter requesting repair and replacement. I sent a second letter (certified)requesting a claim form as specified on their paperwork. I also called to verbally request a claim form. A woman answered and identified herself as an owner {Liza} and seemed concerned about my request for a claim form. She relayed a convoluted third-hand version, so I asked her to hear me out. She seemed surprised by my version and agreed to call me back. She never called back. I spoke to Freddie again and he said the movers were now suppose to stop at the house when they were in the area and take care of it.
About 4 days later, the phone range at 7:30 am. The moving men wanted to stop by within a half hour. One of the original movers{Brad} and a different guy showed up at 8:15 am. Immediately upon walking into the lanai, Brad pointed to the corner piece and said that piece had been missing when they went to pick it up. I said the couple had seen the piece get knocked off and saw them pick it up after pointing it out. I then pointed out the upside down jammed side panel and asked that it be put in properly. Brad attempted to pull, then push it in further, rather than remove it and put it in right side up. As he was doing this I pointed out the scratches. He said 'they had not done that'. I said there was no missing piece or damage when I had last seen the spa just a few days prior. Brad then told me there were 'all kinds of pieces missing when they picked it up'. A light went on at that point and I told him "I picked up the cover, motor access panel, filter, cover lift, and step-in railing a couple days before the move. So yes, those pieces were not there as they were already at my house." I said this may be part of the confusion. I was only referring to the corner piece that was knocked off and the jammed/scratched side panel they put back in. Brad began raising his voice and talking over me. I said if he was just going to argue and didn't want to listen then he just needed to leave because this wasn't helpful. He continued talking loudly and I told him to leave. He told me I should be thankful that they had been able to move the spa rather than complaining. I said I wanted the piece replaced and he needed to leave and I turned to go back in my house. My boyfriend was just starting to walk out to find out why this guy was yelling at me. Brad and the other mover left. Nothing was resolved including putting the jammed piece in properly.
I sent a third letter (certified) again requesting a claim form. As of this date, I have received no claim form or return calls to resolve the matter. The couple supplied me with a written account of what they witnessed during the move.
