Response from West Coast Awnings
Hello, [Removed Member Name]. Thank you for your feedback about our company. I would like to address your concern about our financing options and give you a little background on why we can not offer any direct financing, but that there still ways to get financing for an awning project. We know that some of our products are more expensive than the usual off the shelf purchase and are more like a remodeling home improvement project. So, we researched direct financing options first and found that the added costs of billing, processing, and overhead would cause our total costs to make our products to increase. Additionally, we would have to place a contingency on how many customers would fail to make their payment and add that loss of revenue into the overhead costs for making all of our other products. The final result is higher costs of production and therefore higher prices for our customers. We did not want to raise our prices across the board as this ends up being a worse deal for our customers, so we decided not to offer direct financing. Our second option was to partner with a financing company. We interviewed several candidates and found that no one will finance a Custom-built product such as ours. The problem is, a financing company has to be able to repossess the product in the event that the customer does not make the payments, but a custom-built awning or canopy has no value apart from the structure it was designed to fit. If a car or home, for example, gets repossessed it is still valuable to another buyer and the financing company can re-sell it to recoup their money. However, since a custom built awning is only valuable to the person that owns the house or building that it fits, the financing company cannot resell the product and would lose all of their money. So, all of the financing companies that we approached would not offer financing to our customers because they had no way of getting their investment back in the event of non-payment. The good news is that our products do qualify as home improvement projects and anyone can procure financing through their bank as a line of credit or as a home equity loan. It is similar to remodeling a kitchen or bathroom on your property using equity or credit through your bank. Since those financing options are not tied directly to the value of the product itself, the loaning institution can still collect in the event of non-payment and are more than happy to provide financing in most cases. For most contractors (which we are), this is the standard method of gaining financing for the project. Home owners get small loans to do remodeling improvements or additions all the time and very rarely does the contractor offer financing for the project. Although awnings seem like a different product, it is actually the same when it comes to improvements to real estate like homes or businesses. So, it is not because we do not want to offer financing to our customers that it is not available! We looked through every option we could and found that our industry cannot offer it and we have to rely on banking institutions instead, just like most contractors would do. I do wish the circumstances were different, but as you can see from the reasons stated above, it is not out of lack of trying that we have come to this conclusion. Finally, Our Angie's List rating and Angie's List customers are very important to us and we do everything we can to offer excellent customer service. I'm worried that your rating for our company is based solely on a lack of financing options which sends the message to other Angie's List users that we are a Sub-standard company overall. I'm sure you would agree that it is not entirely fair to represent our company in that way. Would you please consider changing your rating to better reflect our customer service overall now that you understand our situation when it comes to financing options? I would appreciate your consideration not only for myself, but also for the fairness of the evaluation to future Angie's List users. If you have any other questions about anything I've said here or would like to pursue your project after discussing financing with your bank, please contact me any time using the info below. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope we can be of service to you in the future. Kindest regards, Rick Kalil President West Coast Awnings rick@westcoastawnings.com 727-409-7700 mobile

Description of Work: Replaced an existing dome awning over the front entrance to our house with an exact match. The old awning was removed. The dome structure was used to replace the old fabric with new fabric. Once removed, the construction of the new awning fabric took place at the factory. When the fabric was sewn and placed on the dome structure, the new awning was then installed. We were notified when the awning was going to be removed, as well as, when the new awning was to be installed. The installers were professional and friendly and worked very quickly. The quality of the fabric and workmanship is outstanding. I would highly recommend West Coast Awnings.

The cost and estimate were reasonable and seemed high at first but the quality of the product is excellent. We did not expect it to take as long to order as it did and there was a mixup with the installation date and time but it wasn't too inconvenient for us. The installation went well but there was an issue with a dent in our sliding door base which we addressed with the company. The owner was very agreeable to repair and everything has been fine ever since. The awning works great.

The awning was high quality and the workmanship was great. They were quick to come give me a quote and the price was OK, but on the high side of my budget. The production time for such a small project took much longer than expected. They also waited to schedule my install until they had other jobs in my area which added over a week to the install delay. Overall we are very happy with the product and they were easy to deal with, but we would have liked it installed sooner.

Jeff came to my home and showed me all the materials that were available. I saw many pictures of the work West Coast has done. He measured my windows and discused the options. He gave me an estimate on cost and I made my decisions about fabric. He told me another man would come by in a week and make exact mesurements. When the man came to do the measurements I made some changes from the original contract. I am so happy I did. I now have exactly what I wanted and am thrilled with the results. The men who installed them did an excelent job.
Description of Work: Awnings for 8 windows. 4 windows on the front side of the sun room all share 1 awning. 2 windows on one side of sun room share 1 awning and there are 2 awnings on the other side of the sun room with a door between. Each awning was a different size.

From start to finish they were professional and informative. There quality is superior, right down to the aluminum frames and stitching that is made from a gore-tex like material that won't wear out early as normal thread tends to. They had very competitive pricing and the job was completed on time and as ordered. The installers were very professional and did an excellent job, and these awnings were not the easiest to install on our slanted gables. If you don't give these guys a chance to at least quote your awnings you will be missing out on high quality awnings, service and competitive pricing.

I will not be doing business with this company.
Description of Work: I called for someone to come out and give us a quote for replacing 2 awnings on our home. An appointment was scheduled and he showed up. However, my problem is with the unprofessional manner that he handled the quote. We sat on the pool deck, which he initiated, as it was a nice day and discussed the awnings. As we talked, I decided that we would prefer to add 2 NEW awnings, which would replace one of the two that I was going to have recovered in a different colored fabric. He provided me with a quote for my 2 existing awnings being recovered, which I thought was a bit high, and thought for the money, I would prefer to go with 2 new awnings (bigger and over an additional window). He did not measure the area, he 'eyeballed' it from the front yard, and the locations were upstairs (one was over my balcony upstairs and an adjacent bedroom upstairs that were accessible numerous ways (go upstairs or use a ladder). He verbally quoted about $1,500 each ($3,000 for both), but didn't give me a written quote. About a week later, I called to confirm the verbal quote he'd given and asked if he would submit that in writing, and he quoted closer to $5,500 for both. I immediately stated the significant different from a week ago and again without measuring, how this pricing was being calculated. He didn't seem to remember the original quote of $3,000 and stuck to his new number of $5,500. I immediately stated my disappointment in this huge $2,500 price difference without any justification and advised that we would not be going with his company for this job. One thing he DID measure while he was here was for a motorized retractible awning on my pool deck that was quoted at $6,162. I was contemplating going ahead with the job for the 2 new awnings at $3,000 and was shocked at the price difference without ANY justification in this pricing difference. I would highly recommend that we all pay attention to their current rating over some of the others on Angie's List and act accordingly in spending our hard earned money with companies that aren't appearing to be taking advantage of us. I will focus on a company with an A or higher rating from now on! This is crazy! (My quote is actually dated 12-30-2012...........)

Response from West Coast Awnings
My name is Rick Kalil and I am the owner of West Coast Awnings. I have spoken to the field representative referenced in this posting and have ascertained that he did indeed fall short of our standard here at West Coast Awnings. This particular field representative has 35 years of stellar service with our company and I was shocked to read such a review of his performance. He informed me that he did meet with the customer on their back patio, as he often does considering we are an outdoor structure company, and that he failed to go upstairs to measure their awning due to what can only be called laziness. After giving the customer a quote for a recover of their existing frame based on his 'eyeball' measurements, he proceeded to his vehicle where he then gave the customer a verbal price off-the-cuff for new awnings with new frames per the customer's inquiry at that time. Since he did not take out his laptop computer and spend the time to give an accurate price, his ballpark guess was much lower than the actual cost of the awnings. While he did not mean to mislead the customer, I can understand from the customer's perspective how his actions could be interpreted as purposeful and malicious. We have attempted to contact this customer to both apologize and explain the misunderstanding. My representative's behavior was unacceptable to me and to this company and I have been given his assurance that it will not be repeated. I would like very much to speak with the customer when they return our phone call to offer my personal apology. We strive to be excellent in everything we do at West Coast Awnings and feedback such as this will help us better serve our customers in the future. Since I cannot be at every proposal meeting and every project in person, reports from Angie's List members are vital to me as a business owner. I thank the customer for their honesty and hope they return our call soon so that we may make things right with them. Kindest regards, Rick Kalil President West Coast Awnings

Response from West Coast Awnings
Hello, my name is Rick Kalil and I am the Owner of West Coast Awnings in Clearwater. I have read the member's comments and am very sorry that she had an unsatisfactory experience with my company. It is always our goal to be at every appointment on time and to give great value for competitive prices. I have spoken to the sales representative that came to the member's home to ascertain the details of their interaction, and he informed me that he was, in fact, late to his appointment and that he apologized to the member upon his arrival for keeping her waiting. While we strive to be perfect in our punctuality, life has a way of making that impossible and it is regrettable that the member was the victim of such a circumstance. At West Coast Awnings, we use higher grade materials and more highly skilled (and higher paid) individuals to manufacture our products. We are rarely, if ever, the lowest priced company on any given project, but our quality and experience are unparalleled. When presented with our bid of $945, the member countered with another company's lower bid of $725 and stated that if we could not match that price, she was not interested in using our company. When faced with an opportunity to match a competitor's bid, we will do everything we can to earn a customer's business. In this case, we offered to do the job for $750 plus tax, bringing her total to $802.50. I have the open contract for this sum on my desk as I type. Since we warranty our fabrics for up to 10 years and use specialized threads that are designed to withstand the Florida sun, we simply cannot build a product up to our high standards for the same price as some of our competitors can build theirs. If the member is upset by our persistence to be competitive in the marketplace and by our attempt to get her a better quality product at a higher, but more competitive price, then I must conclude that she is not well-versed in business and does not understand the competitive economic climate in which we operate every day. I will state, for the record, that in our 54 years of serving the Tampa Bay area that we have never received ratings for our Price, Responsiveness, Punctuality, and Professionalism similar to those that the member has assigned to us here on Angie's List. We are a Better Business Bureau Accredited Business with an A+ rating for customer service and reliability. And while I'm sure her displeasure for being kept waiting is warranted, her opinions expressed here are at best arbitrary and at worst, malicious. It is simply unreasonable to give my company an overall rating of F when she has no experience further than one meeting with one sales representative on one occasion. Since Angie's List is a source for savvy consumers to find helpful and informative reviews of local businesses, I hope that you will consider our lengthy history and impeccable service record before you lend too much credence to the angry and baseless comments of one vindictive consumer. It is unfortunate that I have to be so assertive in stating the actual facts in defense of my company, but I cannot stress enough how biased and uninformed the member's position truly is. Thank you for taking the time to read my reponse to the member's comments and we at West Coast Awnings look forward to proudly serving Angie's List members for years to come.

We went to their show room and discussed with owner Rick about the cost to replace our existing awning. Instead to change the whole thing, Rick suggested to replace few parts that saved us money. We had our new awning 3 weeks later. Quality is good and services they provided were excellent. We are very happy.

Can you imagine? He even refused cash. I will be sure to call him again, and have already referred him to several people.
Description of Work: Came here on time and checked both mine and my neigbors awnings. He said that they did not need replacing or repairing. That a few screws needed to be tightened and that the need painting. He recommended the Paint Service for the painting, but said that unless we just wanted new awnings, the one we had were fine. He then left saying there was no charge. I offered him $20.00 for gas and his time, but he refused even that, saying he was glad to help, and that if we knew anyone needing awnings, just give them his name.
