Will Spates is an amazing man as he is so very educated on what makes a sick home and what makes a healthy home. We could not find any building biologists in Alabama, so we decided to go with IET since they are located in the neighboring state of Florida and therefore have hands on experience with the hot and humid southern climate. We decided to consult with Will before we even started building as we've lived in houses before that made us very sick and we wanted to make sure that we built this home properly from the beginning. The biggest contribution that Will provided was an excellent set of building biology new home specifications for the builder and all of the subcontractors to follow which proved to be tremendously helpful throughout the building process and beyond. Will and staff were great about returning phone calls and emails most of the time. Also, Will consulted directly with some of the subcontractors as some of the specifications were new to them. The hardest aspect of building a healthy home was finding an HVAC contractor in the area that would follow the specs. It was like finding a needle in a haystack in the state of Alabama. No one around here wanted to change their old ways. We finally had to settle with someone who did a pretty good job but slowed up the building process. We consulted with IET on many other healthy house issues like basement flooring, healthiest light bulbs, safe electricity, radon, mold, spray foam insulation, cabinet VOCs, etc. The only things that went wrong were that the specs could have been a bit more specific on where to find things; for example, the HVAC, hardwood flooring, etc. I had to make notations on the outline to help me find what I needed to find in a timely fashion; we compromised on the cabinets with allowing the stronger VOCs and airing them out in the garage per Will's advice but it still ended up really bothering me and caused skin problems (but over time it has outgassed and gotten much better); as much as I love the science behind building a healthy house, sometimes the building biology got a bit too technical for us when we really just needed some down to earth and easy to apply advice; also, we never received the healthy home maintenance manual which we really need to ensure that we keep our home healthy for our family. While the building biology consultations at $135 per hour seems expensive, it is still less than what another building biologist charges in Georgia, and it is worth the money to us because we know all too well how much it costs to fix an unhealthy house and to fix a person who has sick building syndrome. It was a joy to work with Will Spates and his staff at IET and we could not have made it through the very difficult and time consuming project of building a healthy house without Will! Also, what a wonderful office manager Amanda was; she is the most professional person that I've ever spoken with. Building a healthy house really works too. As soon as we moved in, we noticed how much better we slept with the electric clad wiring and the kill switches in the bedrooms. My toddler who would sometimes wake up every half hour at night or during his nap in our sick rental home, slept 3 hours solid during his first nap in our new healthy house and started sleeping much better at night too! The air is so much cleaner than the last two houses that we lived in. Finally, we're breathing in mold and fiberglass free air! Our whole family is so much happier in our new healthy home and we are gradually getting healthier day by day.

The technician that did the testing for me is perfectly professional and highly experienced. I had signed a lease at an apartment and discovered that night, before I moved in, that I had an allergic reaction after being in the place for a short period of time. I told the leasing company the next day that I couldn't move in because I had allergies to mold and I could tell by my alleric reaction there was mold in the unit. They denied there was mold in the unit and would not let me out of the contract. I got another apartment and in the meantime scheduled the test with IET. IET performed machine, lab, and visual based studies, confirmed the mold and wrote a very thorough report. When I emailed the report to the leasing company, I received a call 20 minutes later telling me to come over and they'd let me out of the lease. In reasearching IET, I learned they are highly valued at mold and other types of remediation. I highly recommend them.

I bought a house in 8/2011 out of foreclosure that was completely contaminated with black mold and all manner of nasty mold. IET came in and tested and then wrote a protocol. They suggested a remediation company (whom I didn't use which was a big mistake for me!). After completely gutting the house, I started working with Tisdale Construction who insisted on following IET's protocol exactly, to my benefit. Will Spates, of IET, was on several conference calls with Tisdale to guide the rebuilding process. IET took an overall view of the house, not just getting the mold out, but keeping moisture from getting back in the house. The dirt in the yard was moved around, trees removed, siding repaired, roof repaired, dehumidification system put in, etc. IET came to my house several times during the process to ensure quality and to put their stamp of approval before the walls were put back in the house. After construction was complete, they did another mold test, at my request, to ensure the house was clean. About a month ago, they came out again, at my request, to permorm an ERMI test. When the results came back, they sent me many pages of educational information about ERMI testing. I love this company. They have made a scary and stressful time easierby being available for questions and they are always educational.

IET's response was extremely prompt. Immediately after contacting IET for an appointment, we received a professional proposal outlining the steps to be taken and the charge we would pay. We feel our inspector was genuinely concerned about our mold issue, and displayed a professional attitude. He spent three hours in our home performing a thorough inspection including moisture mapping and air/surface samples of the infected areas. The follow-up report was outlined and defined in terminology we could understand. We would certainly recommend IET.
