I used Better Homes Appliance Service, Inc., last year when my refrigerator died. They quickly and easily diagnosed and fixed the problem. This summer, I returned from vacation to discover that my refrigerator had died again! Yipes! I called BHAS again and they had someone at my house that same day. It was the same part that had died, so I was not charged for the part, only for the labor. (I don't know exactly how long their warranties are for parts, but they have them at no extra charge.) A few days later, the fridge died again. (Go ahead, call me unlucky--it's a proven fact.) When I called, I was put on the phone with one of the owners of the company. The repair technician who usually works in this area of town (they serve several counties) was in the hospital, and it would cost at least $90 to have another technician drive out to check the problem. She asked me some questions about the fridge and then told me honestly--it wasn't worth replacing an expensive part on a 7 year-old fridge. But she didn't leave it at that--she gave me advice on which brands and models of refrigerators in which they see the least amount of problems (and told me point blank that she has no affiliation with any of the companies). The true "wow" factor of the encounter, however, was that she sent me a refund check for the initial $90 repair plus the $90 it would have cost me to have her tech come out that day. I was floored. Who does that?! Apparently Better Homes Appliance Service does. I was amazed by the kindness and the incredible customer service they provided.

My experience with Better Homes Appliance Service is a testament to their professionalism and honesty. Their technician came out to look at our 5 year old GE Arctica refrigerator. He rather quickly determined that the system likely had a freon leak. Based on the age of the appliance he recommended that we NOT hire them to do the repair and instead call GE Factory Service as he thought it might still be under warranty. This would have been a $600 job for Better Homes Appliance Service. (GE Factory Service came out today and we were indeed within the warranty period. GE is going to install a new compressor, fix the leak, and charge the system free of charge). What a great experience! We had prevously used Better Homes for a warranty repair on a Whirlpool clothes washer and that was also an outstanding experience! We will definitely call them again the next time we need an appliance repaired.

I told the repair person that the $160 charge seemed excessive for the time and the cost of the part. He referred to a printed list of repair costs and said he could not reduce the price. After paying him, I called the owner to voice my objection. She ultimately gave me an $80 refund.
Description of Work: Washing machine would not run after filling with water. Problem turned out to be a broken lid interlock switch. Retail cost of that part is $25. The repair was completed within 15 minutes of the repair person's arrival.

The cost was 149.95, plus tax, that we are required to collect. The price of the part is a very small cost of an overall repair. If you take the cost of an entire job, and start counting what we spend to show up for a job, you would be very surprised at the end of the deductions at what is left. Advertising, insurance, rent/mortgage on our office, power bill, water bill, cable/internet bill, training, trucks, truck maintenance, gas for truck, scheduling secretary (we have to pay the office help also), office supplies (they charge us for invoices, business cards, pens, etc., they are not free), uniforms, phone system, computers and repairs, scheduling software, BB and other dues, parts, tools, bank fees, credit card machine/fees,and much more. It is discouraging and disappointing when people can't understand what it takes to run a professional company. We are not unskilled people working out of the trunk of a station wagon, we answer the phone with real people, we show up on time and usually can give same day service - with all the assurance of a quality job with factory parts (not generic or after market parts). People should be more educated and aware of the cost in running a legitimate company and understand about overhead before complaining.

The work was phenomenal. I had a problem with the condenser or compressor of my refrigerator. When I called him, he asked me some questions over the phone. He analyzed my answers and told me that the repair would cost about $69 or $89; not much money at all. I had expected that it would cost me about $300. He came in a lot lower than that. He said he would be here within an hour. He came in a little earlier than that. He fixed it in 30 minutes. It was exactly what he told me it was. Then he looked at 2 of my air conditioners. He spent about half an hour and did not charge me. I will use him in the future. We have his name and card under a magnet on my refrigerator. We will not call anybody else except him. He was a super, super nice guy.

I was able to dry the waiting wet clothes without incident. Chris was professional and pleasant. He also wore booties over his shoes.
Description of Work: The clothes dryer would not start. After minor troubleshooting (i.e., check electricity) and a review of the owner's manual, I determined that a dryer technician was needed to repair the dryer. Promptly, Chris from Better Homes Appliance Service Inc. scheduled with me for the next day. Chris had previously repaired the washer to my satisfaction. After a thorough inspection, it was determined that there was no defect at this time. The drum was manually adjusted since it appeared to have been misaligned. There was no charge except for the flat rate.

As stated above. Work has not been complete at this time.
Description of Work: I'm writing even before the repair in completed because I am so upset. I believe their practices are "deceptive". They advertise "no service charge with repair" but you can't even get a quote without them doing a service call even if you give them all the information needed by any other repair company. I had already received two quotes for the part needed to repair the actuator for the water despenser in my refrigerator from other companies over the phone. So when I called Better Homes and gave them the same information, they said a tech needed to come out to look at the repair job. The girl in the office set the appointment up for later in the afternoon, but indicated that he may be able to get the part information before the tech come out. About an hour later I get a call from the tech that he is in the area (hence the "A" for Responsiveness") and he could be out within the hour. I told him I already knew I needed the part but he insisted he needed to see it to determine if that was true. So the tech comes out, says "Yup, it's just hanging by the wire and the part is $80 so the job will cost $172.95 plus tax"--all of 10 seconds!--"and that will be $49.95 unless you want us to do the job, then that will be deducted from the total". I was livid! So unless I have them do the work I would be out $49.95--FOR A QUOTE! I went ahead and scheduled the job and will write another review based on the work, but I believe customers should be warned that the "No service charge with repair" in a farce. Any other company would give you a "ball park" quote based on the rate to put that part in and it is understood that if they run into problems it could cost more. But to charge just to give a quote, which is basically all they are doing, is bad business and they should state it that way up front instead of the deception.

Response from Better Homes Appliance Service Inc
Our company does not "guess" what is wrong with an appliance. Most of the time the very thing that the customer thinks is wrong with the appliance is not even the correct diagnosis. Take a look at our many Excellent ratings, we do a fair job for a fair price. It is impossible for a company to give someone a "ballpark" figure before diagnosing the problem. We explain IN DETAIL how our service works, our technician goes out, explain what is wrong and how much the repair will be, if you do have the repair, that is what the charge is, if not, you are only responsible for the service charge. There were no surprises and the customer is always told this up front. No reputable company can go out for free, and if we had given a "ballpark" figure on the customers diagnosis, and it was wrong, they would have been angry over that! I can't even understand why this complaint was allowed to be registered, read it for yourself and decide.

The service technician they sent obviously did NOT fit our request. He took off the front of the dishwasher to determine the problem but was unable to substantiate his original guess. It then took over 1 hour to TRY and put the dishwasher back together. The longer it took, them more agitated he became and he was starting to damage the dishwasher and the surrounding cabinets. I suggested that he could leave it unassembled since we would have to replace the dishwasher; after he left, I was able to reassemble the dishwasher in about 15 minutes. We were not happy: the technician only gave us his best guess at the problem, he was unable to reassemble the dishwasher, and the price he gave for the repair was 70% of the price of a new/installed top of the line Consumer Reports Best Buy dishwasher.
Description of Work: We originally contacted another service company; when they arrived and saw that we had a Bosch dishwasher model that was difficult to analyze they said that they could NOT repair the dishwasher and they did NOT charge us for a service call. Subsequently, we called Better Homes Appliance Service; I specifically requested that someone who was familiar with our Bosch dishwasher model come and service our appliance.

The refrigerator was leaking inside the freezer compartment forming ice on the bottom. Technicion said we needed to replace the entire Refrigerator. Spent 3 hours with LG on the phone during 3 seperate calls including one with the Technicion who seemed at the time to be very knowledgable and very conscientous. He put alot of time into this one with his visit, his phone calls. LG refused to honor any warranty, so on a hunch and in desperation of not wanting to replace a $2000 not very old unit, we had another company look at it. They are more familiar apparently with LGs and replaced a part and it operates beautifully. All fixed.

They replaced the motor of the washing machine and it cost a little more, as it was a special part. They were very professional and knowledgeable. The serviceman came out right away. Water was draining into the bottom of the inside of my fridge. Not an emergency but I was getting tired of constantly sponging it up. I was surprised at how quickly he was able to fix my fridge. I was expecting him to say it was time to buy a new one, esp. since it is a 1984-Kenmore. But, he said the old ones are made better than the new ones. Guess I'll keep it a little longer.

We needed service on an older hand-me-down washer and they were able to send someone same day. They gave us a time frame and the repairman showed up exactly within that. Our repairman Kevin quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it quickly. He was very professional and did a great job. We had another problem with the same washer a few days later and Kevin returned and noted that it was a simple fix that didn't require any parts or real service. He also gave us information that saved us money and time. Great service and a great company.
Description of Work: Kevin was able to accurately determine the problem was with the water valve in our washer. He had the part with him and was able to have it fixed in just a few minutes. It's now running perfect. He also answered questions I had about our dryer and offered solutions that saved us time and money.

I called this morning and had a techinician at the house within 2 hours of my call. TWO HOURS! Awesome. Not only did the serviceman arrive on time, he also identified the problem, had the part in his truck, installed it, tested it, cleaned up and was out of the house in 20 minutes. He also provided me with the name and contact information of a "sweep" to clean out the dryer vent ducts since they were the actual cause of the part failure. I am more than impressed with this company.

Better Homes was the second repair company called. The first was nice enough, but the repair was beyond his ability. Better Homes kept its appointment (1 day), diagnosed the problem in 5 minutes, called to order a part, made a tentative appointment for the day the part should arrive (2 days), called to confirm, and fixed in about an hour with the new part. No bragging, no fanfare, just good, competent service by a repairman who knew exactly what he was doing and a courteous and accurate home staff.
