Hired this Company to do many different jobs - plant perennial peanut (front and backyard, put in mulch, plant a large robellini palm, install a walkway of pavers, and do irrigation work. About the ONLY thing that they did correct is to install a nice large palm - however, WAY over priced. All of the peanut died, charged for underlayment for the mulch that they didn't put in, Irrigation job took many trips to correct leaks, AND (the biggest issue) never sanded and sealed the pavers properly. The "sales guy" was soooo nice when he came out then got beligerent when we asked him to correct what was not done, He said he would reshecule to do the job within a week ----it's now been 2 weeks and NO word from him! This is the very FIRST negative review I've ever written -and only did so because so many people said that others need to be aware of this Company.

We spoke with James Slayton, the owner of Millennium Lawn and Landscape, about designing our landscape, recommending plants and installing them. The design and initial install went fine and we were pleased with the initial result. However, we noticed about 90 plants not doing well and asked James to come out and take a look. That on-site look took almost 2 months to happen and when he finally did come out he told us that deer were eating those plants. He said he didn't know we had deer. We live on over an acre as are other homes around us and the subdivision is only half built. OF COURSE WE HAVE DEER! I would have thought a landscape professional would have known and considered that before recommeding plants. OK, now what to do. James, at the visit said he would look into it but never got back to me. After two unanswered letters to him asking what he will do, I cancelled his weekly landscape service. To date, he has never responded to us on anything and the plants are all now dead and removed, probably about $2,000 worth would be my guess. I advise anyone who plans to deal with James to consider the non-existant follow up we received on a large l($20,000+) landscape investment.

For the past 3 years I have hired MILLENNIUM to trim my palm trees prior to hurricane season. I have 2 large canary palms and several other around the yard. They do a great job, were professional, safe and efficient. 2 years ago I hired them to replace the sod in my entire yard which involved removing the old sod, leveling the soil and moving/replacing sprinklers. This job was done on time, and on budget with great service from their foreman, Rickie. After TS Debby came through in June 2012, one of my royal palms was leaning 30 degree's and about to fall over. I called Rickie on Wednesday and on Friday of that week, his crew was out, dug up the royal palm, replanted and braced it along with two small palms. I was surprised that with all of the damage around the area that they would be able to get to me that quickly. In addition, not knowing we were leaving on vacation the following day, Rickie came out the next week, every other day, and watered the replanted palm . That is going above and beyond in my book! We have since added them to mow and maintain our lawn and bushes as a result of their continued high level of customer service and professionalism and would recommend them to our neighbors. I don't know the particulars of the earlier reviews from a few years ago, but it doesn't line up with the service that I've received for the past 3 years.

We will concentrate on the sod as that is the main complaint at this time. The sod looked good when laid but was loaded with moths. With the rain and the bugs the majority of the sod died after about 3 wks. (Photos available), with the exception of that in full sun. James told me he sprayed it twice for fungus. Then later said it was just once. He said not to worry as we had a 90 day warranty on our sod. The sod in the front of the house, and parts of the west side were replaced after about 3 wks; however the new sod started to die too. By two and a half wks. the entire newly sodden areas were once again dead. James blamed us for lack of care and maintenance and stated that he had warranted the sod and stood by it once, this was our responsibility and that we didn’t put chemicals on our lawn as he recommended and we needed to trim our Oak trees. It was apparent he did not plan on standing behind the 90 day warranty; he said it was not his fault. However, he would replace some in the south west corner that had been displaced from the erosion. This was never replaced, because when the 3 sod men arrived they saw the rest of the yard and felt compelled to call my wife outside and tell her that the new sod would only die again as the wrong type of sod was continually ordered and we needed Bitter Blue, Palmetto or Classic St Augustine which are all shade tolerant. My wife called James and left a voice msg, telling him what the 3 sod men said he called back and left a voice msg disputing this, raising his voice and saying it was our fault for not getting someone out to spray and treat the lawn as he recommended. ( We have the recorded msg available) We since have had 4 professional opinions. 3 sod companies (including the one Millennium used) and our yard service company. · All agree the wrong sod was installed; · The sod should not be treated with any chemicals until after at least 21 days from installation. Our sod was originally laid by Leon and son Sod, who was subcontracted by Millennium Landscaping on Aug 25th or 26th Sept 1st sod was already dying and James was called, we left message on his cell phone Sept 6th James returned our call about the sod and left us a message Sept 20th front yard and part of west side sod replaced, west side of back still dying by neighbors property line, called and told James Sept 22nd Called James again about the dead grass on the west side that wasn’t replaced and how it was dying/dead Sept. 28th called James again about the dying sod and told him the front yard was beginning to die again as well. > James said we HAD to have a lawn service come out and treat the yard or it would die, said St Augustine was high maintenance sod and it will continue to die if we didn’t get chemicals on it. I called a lawn service the same day. Sept 28th Sept 29th Keepers of the Green came out to evaluate the lawn. Stated we had the wrong sod down, needed to be a shade resistant sod in the shade areas like Bitter blue/ zysia or a shade resistant St Augustine like Palmetto or Classic. They also said they could not put chemicals down on sod that hadn’t been down at least 21 days or it would kill it. They waited another week and a half and came out and sprayed on Oct. 14th Oct. 6th: almost all of front yard is dead, called James and he said again that we needed to put chemicals on it, told him we hired a company Oct 14th: yard sprayed by Keepers of the Green Oct 25th Leon and Son sod men came out to replace portion of dead grass in back yard that hadn’t been replaced by property line and the 3 sod men called to me and asked to speak to me… they said” Ma’am we can replace this sod but it will just die like the other did” I asked why and all 3 of the men agreed and told me we needed Bitter Blue, this was the wrong type of sod… they further told me that when they came out the last time to replace dead sod that they told workers of Millennium Landscaping that Floratam was the wrong sod to be putting down and were told to lay it anyway. We told them to not bother at this time then, they also told me that the soil was full of worms and bad. (We had 100 yards of dirt brought in for the project and had questions about some of the dirt type as it didn’t absorb water well and had a clay type consistency that water stood on.) They called their boss Carlos and let me speak to him after they told him it was the wrong type of sod and the soil was full of bugs. Carlos said he would personally come out the next day and evaluate the lawn. I called James to tell him what they said and reached his voice mail and left him a msg. Oct 26th: James called and left me a harsh voice message stating he told us from the beginning to use Bahia sod (which also requires full sun) and NOT Floratam, but that we wanted it. Even though we asked for Bitter Blue, he said both were grown in the full sun and one wasn’t better then the other for shade. He also said we didn’t get chemicals on it fast enough and that he told us to trim our oak trees Oddly we had grass before the project especially in shaded areas on west side of house and west side of back yard. James went on to say that he stood by the first sod dying because he thought it was bad sod… but that this was our fault for NOT trimming our trees and NOT putting chemicals on it when it was 1st put down. Nov. 2nd: called Leon and Son and asked to speak to Carols who hadn’t been out yet. Left a message with the woman who answered the phone. Nov. 3rd: Carlos called and had been out. Stated we did have the wrong type of sod laid and it should have NOT BEEN Floratam, but a shade resistant sod for the shaded areas. He pointed out that the grass was doing well in the sunny areas and only doing poorly in the portions of the lawn that were shaded. He also stated that he did a lot of work for James and he couldn’t guarantee that shade resistant sod would live w/o us trimming our trees as James recommended. I said as a professional hired to do the best job he could for us why wouldn’t he tell us about the trees BEFORE sod went down and why didn’t he order shade resistant sod? Carlos didn’t know. When I asked Carlos about the time frame to apply chemicals he said not before 21 days or it would burn the new sod and kill it. He also gave me a price of his cost to re- sod. Nov. 8th: Two additional sod companies came out to evaluate the yard. They both wrote up estimates for replacement. Both companies agreed that Floratam was the wrong sod for our shaded areas. One said our soil was full of worms as well, and asked if they tilled the soil and fertilized it BEFORE laying the sod. I told them that they did not, but in the back they did add almost 2 feet of dirt over the grass in some areas, and in the front they just sprayed the grass killer and dragged over it with some of the clay type dirt, (I watched the man do it). The sod company man got down and pulled up the dead sod and removed a very thin layer of dirt and saw the old lawn there and said that the soil should have been tilled and a fertilizer put down before a shade resistant sod laid. They also recommended we buy some shade resistant sod and try it in an area to see how it grows before we have more sod laid. The other sod company agreed that we clearly had the wrong type of sod. I told him we had grass before in areas that were dead now near our neighbors that did well and our neighbor has more Oak trees in their yard then us, as do many homes in the area that have green lawns. He inspected our neighbors grass and said it was “Classic St Augustine, which is one of the shade resistant types” He recommended either Classic or Palmetto St Augustine be put down. Additionally I asked each company when you should apply chemicals and begin treating for insects and weeds and BOTH said not before 3-4 weeks or you risk killing the lawn Nov. 12th: We bought and laid 4 pieces of Palmetto St Augustine sod in the area that grass died 1st in the front yard. Nov 30th: Those 4 pieces of sod are still all green and firmly adhered to the ground and doing well in the most shaded area of the yard. Our other sod was almost completely dead by 2.5 weeks of being down. This sod isn’t showing any ill effects after 2.5 weeks. I also researched the dept of agricultures web sight as recommended by the owner of Keepers of the Green lawn care company which is where he gets his information. He also has his degree in Horticulture from University of Florida. The UF is who the Florida dept. of Agriculture gets its information from. Their sight said Floratam should NOT be used in shaded areas or areas that get less then 6 hrs of sun a day. Also stated that Floratam is “basically intolerant to shade” There web site also recommends Bitter Blue-Palmetto- Seville or Zoysia sod for shaded areas. Dec. 26th. The 4 pieces of Palmetto St Augustine sod are thriving well in the spot we prepared and laid on Nov 12th. It is apparent now that neither the trees nor lack of chemicals were the problem; it was in fact the poor preparation and wrong type of sod. We feel we are due our 90 day sod warranty and want Millennium lawn and landscaping to remove all sod and properly prepare and install the sod of our choice by a company of our choosing.
Description of Work: Grounds re landscaping. Drainage problem. Millennium lawn and Landscaping advertises to specialize in drainage problems: Replace existing retaining walls next to house and water with RR ties, extending same walls around side of house. Replace existing RR tie wall at back of property increasing the height of the wall and fill with dirt to level yard. Install 150’ driveway leading to water to act as a drainage path plus driveway/boat ramp. Install underground drainage for all house rain gutters and run out to lake. Originally to install recommended ground cover of Jasmine in shaded areas and Bahia grass in sunny areas. James (owner of Millennium landscaping) stated the job would be completed in 3-4 days. First down payment paid in June and Job scheduled to begin July 9th, no one showed or called. I phoned James on 7/12, Started 7/13 @ 1:30 pm Black drain pipes were run up to the existing white gutter drainpipes and taped with black tape and duct tape. James told us this was common practice and ‘homeowners just paint it the color they want’. (Photos available) I personally bought white flexible drain pipes and provided them, requesting them to be installed and the black pipe and tape removed. He complied after a discussion. I additionally requested the drain on east side of house not be placed where road was to be dug out and laid. It should be inside the new retainer wall they were going to build. It was installed there anyway. This caused continuing problems throughout the installation process of the driveway and prevented the pavers from being able to meet their desired timeline. The retaining walls were installed; when it became apparent that the RR ties being installed were not being’ hand selected’ as James originally promised. We understand that RR ties are used and may not be perfect, but some were delivered rotten with; large missing rotted chunks. We did not want these used; we felt we were paying for solid ties that would last over a long period of time. Trying to express this to his non- English speaking crew was difficult. His Forman said he understood and would fix, yet they would merely turn them best side out and install them anyway, (unless one of us happen to be home from work to reject the Ties). This problem had to continually be brought it to James attention. If James was personally selecting the RR ties to be delivered then he was making poor choices. I had to request a soil barrier to be installed behind the wall to keep soil from escaping between the RR ties and prevent erosion, although James told me they always install one. I had to personally show his men when I saw them NOT putting one in and made them go back and redo a large portion of wall. They didn’t even have the material on site and again had to leave the job to go get some. The ground in front of a potion of rear wall had to be dug up so the barrier could be re- installed correctly after a rain storm left us with a large sink hole type area in the back yard after sod was installed w/ dirt clearly running between the ties into the water. (Pictures available) Millenniums crews appeared to be hard working. However, they lacked supervision and direction. James told us he would be there everyday to guide his crew, this turned out to not be the reality of the job. I felt obligated to take time away from my personal job to over see the construction as much as possible, and asked my wife to do the same and to take photos. At one point I supplied his crew with a level. They seemed to welcome this new tool and used it throughout that phase. Sadly, I could only be there occasionally. And this job was now spanning months. That is why I hired a Professional…to be there for me. I expressed this to James. He insisted he was on sight all of the time. Yet we only saw him on site for a few minutes on the days he came. We arraigned our schedules so that one of us could be here as much as possible. Although Millenniums foreman was pleasant and would agree to do as you said, things did not get done as asked for a group of reasons. One we felt being English. I believe he just did not understand. Also, The foreman often had to “go to the shop to get items” leaving the rest of the crew 1-3 men mostly to continue working with no supervision or way for as to communicate with them as he acted as a translator Often throughout the job we had to stop the crew from working and redirect to prevent them from continuing something incorrectly. Once we had to redirect the same problem 3 times as they just continued to dig where we had asked them not to. Language was clearly a barrier even though the Forman said repeatedly, “Ok no problem, I’ll fix don’t worry” this became a standard phrase heard throughout the job!! Our frustration and concern increased with each passing day. Another problem was that the crew would show up only 1-3 days a week and some weeks not at all w/o any warning and some days just for a couple hours. After expressing to James that this was unacceptable, he did comply by phoning me and letting me know if they would be out. One week they didn’t come due to ’equipment failure’, however our job had a lot of work at that point that didn’t require equipment use? This was frustrating because the rainy season had begun, and the original retaining wall had been removed; now erosion was becoming a problem. I had to add 3 unplanned drains to stop the erosion during the construction process, at an additional $1050. I was stressed out wondering when I arrived home how much more erosion occurred and did it affect my homes foundation. Millennium made no attempt to provide for temporary erosion relief during the construction phase. Already the roots of a large Oak tree were visible as a large crater had opened up. I personally worked in the rain with a shovel to build some sort of dam to stop the wash out of the dirt. All while directing James crew on what to do with the back hoe they had on sight to help. Part of our new wall was undermined from the erosion; (photos available) James was phoned and did not come out to help. I repaired the washout from under the retaining wall. It was just not a priority for James to stop the erosion. We changed from a Jasmine ground cover and Bahia grass and went with sod over the whole yard with a sprinkler system to support same. Our yard has both full sun in parts and almost full shade in others. I asked James to recommend the correct sod. He said St. Augustine/ Floratam for the whole yard. I asked about the shade tolerant Bitter Blue strain of St Augustine as I have been told Floratam is not shade tolerant and he said “ No, Floratam would be fine as both were grown in full sun and it didn’t matter” (we also have this on a recorded message he left us). I’ll get back to that topic. About this time James came to me and told me that he had spoken w/ other professionals and the crushed asphalt he originally recommended for the driveway would not work for our situation, due to the grade change and amount of water that moves through the area. My drainage expert was now admitting it was more than he could handle, while I appreciated his honesty, this was a major portion of the overall project he tossed back in my lap to resolve. He did give me the name of a paving company to call. James told me I would need to contract them myself. We had also decided to have some additional walkways installed. These would originally be filled with the crushed asphalt, but since that changed we decided to go with shell as James recommended. During the initial bidding process James and I discussed the amount of fill dirt that would be recovered from the installation of the driveway. This could be used in other places where fill would be required. James charged me for 100yds of fill dirt @ $30yd brought in before the drive was cut. He delivered 90yds and owed me 10. The dirt he brought in was of questionable quality and clay like, not draining well. James referred to is as “Red dirt” When it became apparent that this dirt was not intended as a base for the new road but rather to be used in the flower beds and yard I had to ask James to have his men remove it as we experienced standing water after rain. In one area a green algae had begun to appear from the standing water. This dirt simply did not allow the water to percolate. James brought in some clean topsoil to put in the gardens after removing some of the hard reddish fill dirt. It was spread mostly on the front, sides of the house and some in the back western side, and the gardens. Sadly, when the driveway was cut the sod had already been laid. The pavers had to remove 40-45 yards of rich, fertile native soil. This was taken away to a fill depot. Fortunately the pavers did not charge me to remove the excess fill dirt then. The drain pipe aforementioned that was installed where the driveway was to be cut posed new problems, and was damaged due to being in the way of the heavy equipment. I insisted this be relocated and repaired. When I inspected the repair Millenniums crew did, I found the pipe repaired in more than one area with duct tape and in another with blue painters tape. How many more pipe joints in my yard are done with the same quality that I did not catch? It also had to be dug deeper as James would still not move it, the sod was now laid. We had requested some simple steps in the retaining wall closest to the house; this was not completed until James was reminded. They had already laid the sod, and installed the sprinklers. They installed the steps, they were not measured and now we have 3 steps all of different depths and lengths that are huge in size, not of a standard size one would expect. James did agree to repair them but since it would cause damage to the new sod to resize them correctly I told James to leave them as is, and bring in the topsoil discussed. By this time my frustration with the project was taking its toll.

All the above was done by 3 workers and for everything other then the irrigation it was a very good experience. The sprinklers were redone due to pool being installed and all were either facing the wrong way or were installed with the incorrect heads. We called the company 3 or 4 times to please come and correct this as we paid for it and have planted new landscaping and none were being watered correctly. They gave us several excuses but never showed up or called to explain why they didn't show when they said they would. We will not use this company again.
Description of Work: Put down 20 yards of mulch, trimmed 2 large oak trees, planted 4 25gal Holly trees, moved 2 Magnolia trees, re-did irrigation around new pool.

James Slayton owns the company and personally supervised the entire job. He quoted the job and made plant suggestions. He called and coordinated his work thoroughly. He did all he was asked to do and more. He was very cooperative and we were delighted with the result. He gave us a very fair warranty and did a great job in understanding our needs. He was thorough in making sure we were pleased with the result. His nursery person Rita and his crew were very helpful. He was very careful in the use of his heavy equipment. He planted large trees and did so with care and precision.
Description of Work: Millennium landscaped our backyard and pool area. They also replaced sod and did irrigation and lighting repairs. He planted large trees and all types of plant material.
