American Leak Detection’s highly trained technicians use non-invasive leak detection equipment to accurately locate leaks to save time, money and avoid unnecessary property damage. We are the world leader in the accurate, non-destructive detection of all leaks including hidden water, sewer and gas leaks.
Turns out, the leak was in the hot water supply line.
Description of Work: Insurance hired them to come out and do leak detection after we find water damage to our laminate flooring. They did a pressure test and said it was not the current plumbing. They tried to say it was ground water coming up through the slab after a 2 month drought. These guys are insurance lackeys and not to be trusted by homeowners.

Response from Leak Detection of Pinellas County
While we can appreciate the homeowner's frustration, unfortunately, electronics cannot detect a plumbing leak which is not actively leaking at the time of the detection. When our technician arrived at the home, the hot and cold water supply lines were on to the house. The water meter was showing no movement. Electronic point testing revealed no plumbing leak sounds, and infrared thermal imaging also showed no areas of moisture concentrations. All hot and cold water plumbing lines held 73 PSI pressure for 15 minutes showing no leaks. Testing of the water shut-off valve was good. There are cases where a leak may be so small that it shows no movement on the water meter, but it would reflect a loss in pressure over the 15 minute period if actively leaking. On occasion, these very small drip or mist leaks may also temporarily seal themselves off with sediment in the water lines, only to start leaking again hours or days later. While we do provide service for insurance companies, the majority of our work is completed for private homeowners, with most work being referred to us by past customers or other professionals within the industry. The service was within 24 hours of my call. Kevin was a nice guy and was proficient.
Description of Work: Attempted to locate a leak. ***ask all leak detection companies if they go into crawl spaces*** I did not know until after the service was delivered that this company would not search for leaks in a crawl space. Therefore I did not learn exactly where the leak was. Only which pipe leading into the crawl space under my house was leaking. wasted $250

He could not find the leak, and, as agreed, honored the guarantee and did not charge for the house visit. I gave a low overall grade because, despite my impression that this is a very good company, they could not find the leak. Another company did find it.

Our experience with them went very well. We were satisfied with them. Actually they came out and fixed it, and it leaked again. They came right back within a day and re-fixed it, and then it was just fine. They were very good and they did what we needed them to do. We’ve never had a service like this before and so we do not know what it should cost. They fixed the leak and that’s what we wanted. When we asked them to come, they came out within 2 days in the beginning and then just a day after the work was done they were back, and so their responsiveness was pretty good. They were here exactly when they said they would be. They were very professional. We will definitely use them again in the future if we need to.

AMERICAN LEAK DETECTION - PINELLAS & ST PETERSBURG are truly, absolutely excellent. We've used them over the past few years. They're a small company, but they really know what they're doing. The same guy comes out. He has excellent equipment to find the leaks and detects them quickly. He spent six hours here last time, to find it. To repair it, he had to come back and dig up the pavers and dig way down and replace some pipes. They're excellent and when he finishes, the pavers are put back down perfectly.

Horrible experience and the most unprofessional person in the customer service industry I have ever seen. Find someone else to do your pool / spa repairs.
Description of Work: In January 2012, Kevin provided a leak detection inspection and patched the leak our pool skimmer for $400. He found a leak in one of our spa jets and provided an estimate to repair it at a later time for $800. Because the spa jet wasn't seriously leaking and the skimmer was repaired, we decided to wait until a later date to have it repaired. In July 2012, we discovered the water level decreasing in our spa and called Kevin to come repair the suspected leaks. He removed the bricks and mortar surrounding the spa jet and replaced it. At that time, he called me at work to provide an update and stated that he found a second leak located in the jet next to the original leak. He said there was a discount for replacing this one and I said yes. A couple of days later on July 24th, he provided a bill for $1,500 for repairing the two leaking pool jets and I reluctantly paid it. The next day we noticed the water level in our spa was down yet again. So, we called Kevin and told him the situation. He came back out to the house on Saturday, July 28th, and after a brief inspection said there was a new leak he did not find. At this point we questioned Kevin about the leak and if he performed a leak check after we called him to come out. He said no. We asked him if he performed a leak check after repairing the two damaged spa jets...and he said no. He acted as if he was doing us a favor by repairing the leak in a different location. This appeared to us to look like Kevin and his company, American Leak Detection, did not know what they were doing. Moreover, it seems like the second damaged spa jet was a ploy by Kevin to get more money from us. After voicing our opinion to him, he proceeded to tell us that it was our opinion and not his. Finally, after asking for an itemized repair bill, Kevin repeatedly refused to do so. Then, he gave us an attitude saying that $800 is what he charges to fix a broken spa jet.

Response from Leak Detection of Pinellas County
As Angie's List Members can see by our previous reports, our company strives to provide excellent service in a professional and courteous manner. We have received the Angie's List Super Service Award twice over the last four years, and the vast majority of our work is referred through pool service/supply companies, pool builders, and past customers. We take time to thoroughly explain our testing procedures as well as warranties on the phone with customers before coming out for the first visit. Our warranties are also printed on all paperwork. It clearly states all leak detections are guaranteed for 30 days, and true repairs are guaranteed for 12 months. As a courtesy, we also extend the warranty on the leak detection for an additional 30 days as long as the repair work is done within 30 days of the original detection. We were hired by the member to perform a leak detection on his pool/spa on January 28, 2012 for $280.00. This was to test both the pool and spa plumbing and structures from top side. A leak was found in a large crack on the inside of the skimmer well. This area was patched with two part epoxy at no extra charge and with no warranty (pool epoxy/putty is not meant to be a permanent repair since it gets brittle and cracks as it ages, even though some other companies refer to it as a repair). A written bid for the skimmer replacement was given in the detection report but was never completed. We also found a leak on one of the spa jet lines (second jet from end on water side of spa). The leak was located close to the spa wall, meaning the jet may need to be replaced to repair the leak properly. A written bid of $825.00 was quoted for the repair if a jet replacement was necessary. The bid also included a price reduction of $150.00 if the repair could be done without replacing the jet. Since it is possible for any pipe to have more than one leak on it, a pressure test of the repaired line following the repair is always included to ensure there are no other leaks on the line (the electronics used to locate a plumbing leak are extremely sensitive and work on sound - a larger leak on the same pipe will make so much noise it is difficult and usually impossible to hear a second, smaller leak, especially if it is located near the larger leak). Unfortunately, due to the number of pipes and glue joints involved, including both water and air supply lines, spa jet lines may have multiple leaks at the same time. We were hired in July 2012 to repair the spa jet line leak, six months after the original leak detection. The pipe was broken in the spa wall, so jet replacement was necessary. When pressure testing the line following the repair, the pressure test revealed a second leak on a jet line close to the first jet (3rd jet from corner on water side). The second jet repair was approved by the member before completion and was discounted to $675.00. Following the second repair, another pressure test was performed, and the spa jet lines then held pressure indicating no other leaks on the spa jet lines at that time. Broken parts were left for the member. When the member called to say the spa appeared to still be dropping, we went back out and pressure tested the spa jet lines again. The lines held pressure. We then found two new leaks around two other spa jet fittings, and we applied two part epoxy patches to both. There was no charge for the additional pressure test, checking the structures of the other jet fittings, nor the epoxy patches applied, even though there was no warranty on the initial detection performed in January. We strive to have all happy customers. Unfortunately, we are never the bearers of good news. We are coming out to find a leak or leaks in a pool or a spa, or a plumbing leak in someone's home. Our goal is to find all existing leaks at the time of the initial detection, but we cannot predict or prevent future leaks. To fix leaks properly, bids for repairs are given based on the technician's assessment of the difficulty of the repair and the materials involved. We also never increase repair prices in the middle of a job, even if the job takes three times longer than expected. A job which was bid for too little is our problem, not the homeowners. In all aspects of the job, we try to maintain a sense of professionalism, honesty, and fairness, and we will continue to do so in the future. I called on April 26, 2012 and Kevin was able to give us an estimate on the work the following day. Our skimmer had a large crack. He put a temporary fix so we could run our pool until we could get it fixed. We decided to have them fix the leak because they did an excellent job for us in 2003. They were able to schedule our job for fhe first week of May. Kevin came out on May 1 and removed the water and started working on the skimmer. We also requested that he grout the pool, so he also cleaned and prepped the tile the same day. This took about 3 hours. He came back on May 2, and finished replacing the skimmer and did the grout work. This was a long tedious process. He worked continually from about 7:30am to 4pm. He did an excellent job. Our pool looks great again, and the leak is fixed.
Description of Work: We noticed that we had to add water to our pool almost every day for a couple of weeks. I called American Leak Detection because we had used them before and they did an excellent job.

In January, 2009 our pool was leaking & Kevin came out, did thorough check of system ($255), discovered two leaks by the return wall fittings - he put an epoxy patch & gave us an estimate of $400 to repair the two leaks whenever we wanted. On Thursday, 5/12/11 we discovered a significant drop in the pool level overnight so called & Callie scheduled Kevin to come out today which he did & called ahead as promised. Turns out, the two wall fittings he fixed in 09 were okay but there was another leak with another wall fitting. So, to be fair, he didn't think a whole check of our system ($255) was necessary so we opted to just have the fittings permanently repaired. Kevin completed the job, was careful not to let chunks of concrete fall into the pool & swept the bottom with a net to catch whatever he missed so it wouldn't goof up our pool sweep.. I would HIGHLY recommend this company for any hidden leaks - pool or home! Kevin is very professional & honest, which is so refreshing in this day & age!!

Originally contacted Kevin Sliwa (owner-operator of Amer. Leak Det.) on 12/13/10 regarding my leak. Pool level was dropping at least 1/2 in./day. Leak started apparently after a severe (for FL.) cold spell. Kevin came out to the house the next afternoon. I thought the leak was possibly some where in the pool light cannister since the water level had dropped below the skimmer. Without diving in the pool (water temp was probably in the 50s) he was able to determine with a tracer that the leak was not around the light but at the main drain. Since he couldn't use a dye tracer he noticed the movment of small pieces of debris near the drain grill when moved by my pool brush. Nothing like having a keen eye and a lot of experience. He explained the next step in the process was to have his dive specialist Dan Douglas use a dry suit, something like the sponge divers use, to verify and patch the area with epoxy. Dan came by two days later and completed the job. Three days had elapsed from the time I first called the office and in the middle of winter. To say the least, I was impressed.
Description of Work: Performed tests to locate point of leakage in the pool; dove pool using "dry suit" to verify the exact point of leakage and patched with 2-part epoxy.

With mask, weight belt and dye tracer syringe Kevin Sliwa(owner/operator) made a thorough inspection of the pool shell -- everything below the water line. Finding no leak in this manner, he plugged the suction line to the pump at the skimmer outlet PVC fitting and pressurized the entire line out to the pump. The line did not lose pressure indicating the leak was somewhere in the skimmer structure. Because the rate of leakage was so low it was hard to tell using the dye tracer whether the water was leaking at the input side of the skimmer's PVC fitting or just diffusing into the return suction line. Kevin decided to use 2 part epoxy putty to seal around the seam of the 2 piece skimmer box and also around the threads of the PVC fitting. The water llevel was marked on the inside wall of skimmer. After watching the water level for several days, it was noted that the leak rate changed from 3/8 in. per day to less than 1/8 in. Plugging the PVC fitting with plumber's putty stopped the leak entirely verifying that the leak was within the PVC fitting itself. At this point it was decided to live with the very low leak rate rather than replace the entire skimmer -- an approximately $900.00 undertaking with little chance of returning the deck to a reasonable appearance.
Description of Work: Located and patched a leak in my pool that had been causing loss of 3/8 in. of water daily. Preliminary tests performed by me prior to engaging American Leak Detection indicated the leak was somewhere in the return suction line of the pump.

This is actually the second time that we have done work for this member (the first time was in 2005). We are happy to hear that the member was pleased with our work and appreciate him taking the time to write a report regarding our service. Many true repairs can be completed with minimal invasion to a pool's surface or decking. Replacing a skimmer, however, requires cutting out the old skimmer and replacing it with a new one. The deck has to be repaired as part of the work. If a pool has pavers and coping pavers, and the homeowner has extra matching pavers on hand, the pavers can be reset, and the homeowner will not be able to tell where the repair was made. However, if a pool has decorative coping stones or tiles, as this member's pool does, the stones or tiles may not be able to be removed without breaking and cannot be replaced if they are no longer available new ("matching as closely as possible" would be the only option). In this case, a small portion of the pool's painted coping stone would have to be cut and reformed. The small area could then be re-painted to match. If the leak worsens, the member may have to consider options. If not, he may be able to hold off on replacing the skimmer until the time of a pool remodel. Again, we thank the member for taking the time to write the report, and we hope that he will contact our company again if the need arises. Overall compnay found several leaks and make some repairs we choose not have additional work completed until we can have pool completely clean (debride at bottom and not being removed with pool cleaning). Wish the same company who found leak was able to clean as well but that was not their specialist.
Description of Work: Call company because we believe there was leak was having to fill water more often than expected. Once initial inpection was completed by pressurized the system and ink test we found there were several small leaks, we replaced o-ring on pump, and determined there was a leak around skimmer and values for input/out jets. Had skimmer leaked fixed and the input/output jet value fixed, company unable to completed test for main drain because we have not been able to have clean suffciently enough to be done. However, this was not there fault. Second trip was made to find another leak around the outlet jet but will not have done until we have made sure the main drain can be checked at the same time.

We had problems within the year. They came out and did a pressure test on the pool plumbing and without warning sent us a bill for another $200 without telling in advance that there would be a charge. I sent them a check for 50% just to try to be fair but after that they refused to service us because we did not pay the full amount of the unauthorized bill. ASK OTHER PEOPLE IN THE SWIMMING POOL INDUSTRY ABOUT THSE GUYS - THEY HAVE A BAD REPUTATION. NOBODY LIKES THEM I FOUND OUT TOO LATE. Don't use these guys. I would recommend Florida Leak Locators. They are terrific.
Description of Work: We contracted with this firm to find a leak and fix it. They did perform the work but only provided a 1 year warranty. They used a polyurthane "space age" material. The process did not work. See problems below.

It upsets our company to see such a posting by any of our customers, but unfortunately, we cannot prevent someone from posting a grossly inaccurate report about us. As any Angie's List member can see from our previous reports, our company works hard to provide prompt, courteous, and professional service. Our particular office was even honored last year with the Angie's List Super Service Award. Many of our previous reports were submitted by Angie's List members referred by their pool supply/cleaning companies or pool builders also highly rated on Angie's List. Please DO feel free to ask around about our company, but please only ask competent and trusted pool service companies and reputable pool builders. Sadly, we also cannot prevent others from encouraging false reporting. However, we have to trust that the members of Angie's List will be able to see through such reports. This member's repair was actually completed in September 2002, not July 2003. The repair WAS guaranteed for 12 months, as was written on the repair paperwork. A leak detection was not done on his pool prior to the repair so we were never hired to find leaks in his pool prior to the repair (he had asked us to provide a bid for repair of the crack only). At NO TIME was service refused to this member regarding warranty work for repairs completed. The repair was checked in December 2002 after a phone call by the member stating that the pool was leaking again. Upon inspection, the crack repair was intact and was not leaking. We had already told the customer that if the crack repair was not leaking, we would need to do a leak detection in order to find other leaks in his pool since we had never checked the pool for leaks. Prices for the leak detection, if necessary, would have been given to the customer before any work was done. All pool plumbing and structures were then checked showing no leaks. The customer refused to pay for the leak detection as quoted and instead sent in $100.00, an amount he apparently felt was fair since we did a total leak detection on a pool that was not leaking. However, trying to never leave a customer dissatisfied, we did credit the customer's account for the balance in January 2003. We have heard nothing else from the customer until this report almost 6 and 1/2 years later. Unfortunately, we cannot erase the report posted by this member. We can only provide the facts and hope that our previous reports speak for themselves. Kevin Sliwa, President, American Leak Detection Pinellas County

It was time to refinish our pool but also believed we had a leak around it after a hugh water bill and noticable evaporation. We contacted a pool company who was willing to do the refinishing but recommended American Leak to determine where the leak originated. The work order was amazing. Whoever took the order over the phone got down verbatim my husband's request. I believe this was very helpful to the technician. The repair he did stop the leak and allowed the pool company to refinish our pool and do the necessary pump work.
Description of Work: Was hired to determine where leak originated around/in a domestic fiberglass pool. Although there was no leaks in the pool plumbing, two major leaks were found. Was able to stop leaks but recommended permanent replacement/work related to the pump. Offered to recommend someone

This is one honest and fair minded company. I was very pleased with them in every way. After having been ripped off in the past by another leak detection company this one was a breath of fresh air.
Description of Work: I've used this company twice now. I first found them through Angie's List and they came out and found two leaks around my pool jets which they patched for me. It's been a year and the best $75 I ever spent. I very much appreciate their honesty. I also used them to find a leak under the slab of another property I own. They were very conscientious and while they confirmed there was a leak they did not charge me because it could not be pinpointed. I insisted on paying them for their time but they waived their fee.

My initial contact with the company was with Kelli who exhibited a comprehensive knowledge of pool problems and provided outstanding service overall. Brett, the repair person was prompt, courteous, and obviously knew exactly what he was doing. He quickly isolated the problem, explained the options to me, and fixed the leaks. I would use this company again.
Description of Work: Two visits were made to my home. The first visit was to determine the source of the leak. A return jet and a suction jet had leaks around the outside of the pipes inside the pool. An estimate of the cost of repair was provided and a follow-up appointment was made to correct the problem. A temporary repair was made with plumber's puddy. On the second visit it took approximately four hours to permanently correct the leaks. I have lost no water since.
