Our remodeling project began in the summer of 2014 as a minor kitchen plumbing problem, for which our regular plumber suggested we consult with a contractor for help with some modest upgrades in the kitchen. We were in discussions with John Ahern (Aspen Diversified Construction) about possible solutions to our needs when our minor problems became a full-blown emergency, as previously unseen water leaks under the floorboards and mold behind the walls suddenly made our house uninhabitable. Before we had even signed a contract, John came to our rescue with just a day?s notice by personally handling the initial demolition to locate and stop the water leaks, and to clean out the mold. We then formalized the contract for the necessary reconstruction and upgrading of our 30-year-old kitchen. Over the next few weeks John did an excellent job of guiding us through the process of rebuilding, starting with general planning and the purchase of materials. On shopping trips with us to purchase cabinetry, flooring, and even the granite slab for the countertops, John patiently explained our options and especially the trade-offs in quality, wear, cost and value. That same knowledge of the building trades and eye for detail was also evident when John showed us shortcuts and other deficiencies in the original construction of our house that only became visible after the demolition (down to the studs). As the rebuilding commenced, he took care to ensure that all work of his subcontractors met his own high standards. For instance, when the new kitchen floor was laid, we were more than pleased with the result, but when John inspected the work of the subcontractor, he immediately noticed a few minor imperfections, which he had fixed the next day. The same applied to all other subcontractors on the job. John was also a ?hands-on? builder, who did much of the painting and finishing work himself. We know all this because we lived in the house while the reconstruction took place, and we were present when almost every workman came to the house. Again, John was always willing to answer our questions about what was being done, how and why, and the relative merits of different approaches, materials, etc. Working with John was like having a mini-course in home construction, which made us much more confident about the choices we made, and we also better understood what has been done to improve our house. The end project is a trouble-free kitchen that has been a pleasure to use. As a side benefit, John was also able to save us money by combining a few other minor upgrades throughout our house (electrical outlets and lights in other rooms throughout the house, and shelving salvaged from the old kitchen that went up in the garage) into this kitchen remodeling project. In short, we are about as pleased as people can be after having had a major rebuilding forced on them by circumstances beyond our control.
