I had a small drip coming from the gasket on the bottom of the toilet. Colonial Warranty sent a non professional service contractor who overtightened the gasket making a major crack. Colonial Home Warranty refused to pay for the repair/replacement of the toilet. I paid for the plumber to come out and replace my toilet directly out of pocket.

This company blamed the contractor for the delay in service and then had the gall to blame Hurricane Sandy when the claim was filed weeks before the storm. I would caution any new home owner from purchasing a warranty from Colonial.
Description of Work: We've only filed one claim with this warranty company and I'm hoping not to need to deal with them again. I will not renew this service next year. The claim was filed for a broken fridge on 10/12. It was not repaired for over a month. Horrible customer service from start to finish. No communication, inaccurate information, inconvenient hours of operation and a useless website.

I paid money upfront for their services. We have been having issues regarding their policy lately. They have told me different times that they will not cover certain things. Our heating unit did not work. There is never a supervisor around to speak with. I have canceled my service.

He had it fixed in no time flat. There was no service fee because our program will cover 3 service calls, depending on what you sign up for. They are excellent and I have been very pleased. Their fees are reasonable.

I purchased the Independence Annual Warranty Plan in July/August. I called to file a claim 11/7 and was told i needed to agree to the terms first. At this time i was filing a claim because my heater would not come on. I called back that evening to get the status and they provided me the contractor it had been assigned to. I was able to make an appointment the next day. He came out discovered the problem and stated he needed to contact COlonial for authorization. When he finished his call with them, he said they would be in touch with me and I paid the service fee. When I talked to Colonial they said they needed my maintenance records, which i advised them I purchased the home just over a year ago and had not maintenance records, so they requested the inspection report. After sending the inspection report, they contacted me to indicate that the claim was declined because I had not done any maintenance (inspection report talks about the air conditioning functionality - air being lost through attic not heating functionality) and the unit was still under manufacturer warranty. If they were able to make this determination from my inspection report in November, why did they not ask for this in July before they took my money. They could have advised me of what would and would not be covered then ... instead of offering me "peace of mind" that the warranty would help me in this situation. Because i bought in August, prorated unexpired time plus $50 cancelation fee ... I am out over half the cost of the policy and still have to find someone to fix for me out of my own pocket. There are BBB complains filed on them weekly. I would not recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: Fix heater in Home. I was unable to turn on the heat. The unit worked fine last winter.

Worst experience with a home warranty company EVER.
Description of Work: This company is in the business of NOT paying claims. I called to report that my freezer had frozen up. I mentioned that it had happend before, but I thought that my children had spilled water in the freezer and had turned off the freezer, cleaned it up after it thawed, and when I turn it back on, it refroze. They are refusing to pay the claim because I didn't tell them about the issue IMMEDIATELY (i.e., when I thought there was spilled water). They will either pay the claim, or be sued by me...this is ridiculous!

The person they sent out to check the problem told me that they couldn't order the switch because Colonial wouldn't approve it. There was this kind of contact repeatedly - I called Colonial multiple times, was assured I'd hear back after 24 hours after they looked into the situation & I never got return calls. I'd talk to the tech they sent out that told me what the problem was & he kept telling me the same thing - Colonial wouldn't approve the part. I called multiple times, always being told that I was talking to a supervisor but nothing ever got done. They finally had the tech come out with the switch to do the job. But they never told me, never called me. The issue was finally fixed but I never heard anything from them - no notification that it was being done & confirmation that it was done. It took a month to get even this.
Description of Work: I called them this last time because my washing machine was broken. They sent someone out who told me what happened, & that I needed a switch.

Purchased Independence annual warranty from Colonial in June, 2012 as power of attorney for senior relative as part of a real estate transaction. On September 15, 2012, filed a claim for a broken garage door opener. Agent called on 9/17 to refuse claim, saying it was not covered. They suggested that even though Garage Door Openers are included in the policy, only the remote transmitter was covered and my mechanical issue was not covered. They told me to read the contract. I read the contract. It's the same as on their website. It says, "4. GARAGE DOOR OPENER INCLUDED: All components and parts, except: EXCLUDED: Garage doors - Hinges - Springs - Sensors - Chains ? Travelers- Tracks - Rollers - Remote receiving and/or transmitting devices. https://www.colonialhomewarranty.com/useragreement.shtml . Yes, that is a long list of exclusions, among them the remote transmitter that the agent implied was the only covered item! The contract doesn't exclude the main motor/transmission/electronics assembly, the source of my problem. So, I sent various emails over the next month to customer support and the sales person that advised me when I purchased the warranty. All but one were simply ignored. The one response from the sales person suggested I could call for a refund if I was not happy with the policy, but he would not address the issue of the claim being refused. I finally called again to submit a new claim on Oct 17th. I explained that the problem was not with any of those EXCLUDED items. At first, she said that I would have to have someone to come out and give an estimate on what was wrong, before I could even file a claim! At a cost of $75 or $100 to have a service visit for an estimate, plus Colonial's $65 charge to have a covered repair visit, I might as well just pay the $150 it cost to fix a similar issue on the other opener in the same garage that failed some time ago. Based on the other garage door opener that had the same issue a while back, I told the Claims rep that the problem was likely with the gear/sprocket within the main motor and electronics assembly and I was almost certain this was an INCLUDED expense. She agreed this would be covered if it was the problem and assigned the case to a contractor. I received an email with a claim number the same day, saying that the Contractor would call within 1-2 business days, but they never did. Over a week later, I called the number provided. The contractor said he did not have any contract with Colonial Home Warranty! I gave him the claim number and toll free number and he apparently got it sorted out, as I received another confirmation email from Colonial that it had been assigned to him again. He came out later the same day. He investigated the problem and confirmed that it was the gear assembly. He then called Colonial while at the house and they denied to cover the claim, even though it was exactly what I had told them! I called them within minutes to find out why, and could only reach their answering service. They could not provide any information or connect me to anyone who could help. This put me in a very bad and very unfair position. So, the contractor gave two options. Pay $150 to have him fix it now. Or pay the $65 Colonial surcharge for his visit and have someone else fix it later. Of course, even if Colonial admitted a mistake and he had to come out again, it would be another $65 for a second visit, simply because Colonial denied the claim the first time! The opener is now fixed, at our expense of $150. The Colonial website claims information states this as the reason for not honoring their warranty, "motor doesnt have the power to pull it open". That's a very bad excuse, given that the motor pulls it open just fine now that we paid for the repair. Basically, Colonial did everything they could to avoid initiating a claim on a covered expense. Then, they stuck me at the last minute with denying a claim when the repairman was at the house, and they could not be reached. So, buyer beware if you use this company! It will likely cost you more time and hassle than it is worth while trying to get them to cover an INCLUDED expense. I guess they count on customers giving up before getting a claim covered. For something that would have cost them only $85 above their service call fee, I can't imagine the hassle I'd have gotten for a major claim! If they don't refund the $85 difference, I'll be asking for a refund of the policy. I can only imagine the hassle I'll have to endure to try that.
Description of Work: Company started a claim, but never finished the repair. Claim was refused at the last moment, after repairman was at the home. Claim was refused because, "motor doesnt have the power to pull it open". Of course, that was totally incorrect, because the repairman was actually able to fix it at our expense, for something that clearly was NOT an EXCLUDED item in the contract.

Horrible.
Description of Work: I originally used this company because they got an "A" on Angie's List. At this point, I question if that was even an actual customer. I have had the warranty for 18 months and never made a claim. I just tried making an AC claim on 9/11/12. The first contract was supposed to come to my house on 9/14/12. They called to say they were too busy and were not coming that same day after I took the time off to wait for them. I complained to Colonial. They assigned another contractor. When I spoke with them, they told me they had no experience with that type of unit. I call Colonial back. They assigned another contractor and after 2 days I called them and they said they were not going to service my equipment. I tried calling Colonial and there has been no answer all day. I also had my regular AC company call Colonial about reimbursement and Colonial did not return their call. It has been 7 days without AC and without a service call. I give this company a strong F grade. They should not be allowed to do business. I can't complain about them in a stronger way.

I would not recommend this company. As I stated, during the first year of mypolicy my home heating system was covered, I then renewed my policy and they changed the terms and conditions without ever notifying me. When I requested service they refused and then would not give me a full refund.
Description of Work: I renewed my home warranty policy at Colonial Home Warranty. I paid for a 3 year renewal. After the first year into my renewal I called for service on my heating system. The request for service was declined because they said my type of heating system was no longer covered. They had changed the terms and conditions of the policy without notifying me. When I requested a full refund since the I was unable to ever use them for my heating system, they refused and returned a proated amount less their ADMINISRATIVE fee. This company is a ripoff.

My microwave above my stove went out; they told me that if they can’t fix it they will replace it. They sent me somebody to take a look at it and they offered me $143 for me to purchase a new one. To replace my microwave with a similar one would cost $225 so I did ask for more money but they wouldn't compromise. This is the second time they did this to me. 2 months after I purchased the warranty, my AC went out and I called them. They sent someone to repair it and they told me that fan motor went out. During the housing inspection, the inspector had noticed nothing wrong with it. They also offered to pay a portion of that repair but 6 months later I still have not received anything.
Description of Work: I have a home warranty with them and everything they promised, they don’t want to take care of it. At first I signed a 3 year contract with them, but I have gotten a refund for 2 of the years because of the issues that I’ve had with them.

First of all, the people who work there are incredibly rude, they only work bankers hours and aren't open on the weekend, so when our AC went out on Friday night - we had to wait until Monday to do anything. After numerous calls and emails, we cancelled our policy with them Tuesday because they would not cover a single part of the A/C repairs our system required. About a month earlier, they sent a company out that "fixed" the AC for about 3-4 weeks until it broke again. That company had to charge us an extra $150 for FREON because Colonial wouldn't cover the cost. We chose Colonial to save some money over their competitors when we first moved in and it was our first mistake. I don't know how other home warranty companies operate, but I imagine they're worth the extra money. This company just takes your money and then tells you there's nothing than can do about it - about anything. They'll find any excuse possible to make sure whatever problem you're having isn't covered by their warranty. I heard the warnings from other people and even some of their VENDORS who said they're an awful warranty company, but now I learned the lesson the hard way. Steer clear of this company - I can't imagine they'll be in business for long and you might as well flush your money down the toilet! I had a $366 policy that I just cancelled after three months and they refunded me $142. Sounds a little unfair, but that's how this company works. I didn't want to argue about it, I just want to be done with these people.
Description of Work: The services performed? Making me wait on hold while they didn't do anything but tell me that my home warranty doesn't cover anything - ANY aspect of my AC system that needs to be completely replaced.

Unrepaired pool pump. Process has been a nightmare.
Description of Work: I purchased a policy from this company because they had an Angie's List recommendation as the best home warranty company. The bottom line is they deny all major claims using the "Lack of Maintenance" clause, even though their policy does NOT specify what maintenance is required. Check internet reviews to see multiple complaints of this nature. My property in Virginia Beach has a failed pool pump. They have requested all the records because the repair estimate is $699 (The Pool repairman states it takes him 3+ months to get paid by Colonial. They are stalling and trying to deny the claim. My step daughter in Charlotte had a policy and when their dishwasher was "unrepairable" Colonial offered $150 to cover replacement!!! Reputable home warranty companies are advertising "NO LACK OF MAINTENANCE" clause becuse of the business practices of Colonial. Colonial has been in trouble with regulators in the past and no one should buy a policy from them.

My experience with this company is something that I would not wish on my worst enemy. I am horrified that this company is still in business and has not been investigated for fraud.
Description of Work: I hired Colonial Home Warranty 8 months ago and never called to report anything until this December. My dryer stopped heating up and I called to report the problem and was told it could take up to 48 hours for a company to be assigned. I waited patiently with "NO" response for 72 hours. I called again and was informed that they did not have any contractors in the area of Knoxville, TN to fix the problem. They asked me to wait until they could get a contract with someone in the area but were not sure when that might happen. When I signed up originally they indicated they had contractors in the area to fix any issue with my home. I asked for a total refund and they said that could only refund me $205.00 of the $345.00 I originally paid. Horrible customer service and follow-up. Buyer Beware.....WARNING, WARNING, WARNING, this company is a huge scam.

Description of Work: My experience has been horrible. I have a leaky pipe right next to washer and dryer. It is a pretty small thing so I called them about the issue. They asked when it first occurred and I said yesterday. They scheduled me with a company to come out with in 2 days. I called them and they said that they no longer work with Colonial. I called Colonial back and asked for another company. They gave me another one that doesn’t service my home. I called colonial back again to tell them my story. They were not apologetic at all over the phone. They gave me another company out of Milburn to fix such a simple issue. They can’t help me with my problem at all. Their online service does not work at all either.

Description of Work: I recently Ihad my furnance not blowing hot air. I called Colonial Home Warranty on Saturday Nov 5th at 5:30PM to get a technician to look at heater. They gave me a phone number of their technician I called, and no answer. His voice mail was full so I could not leave a message. I called back to Colonial and their rep said go ahead and get it fixed and submit repair invoice into us for reimbursement. I sent invoice in and 22 days later no response. I called Colonial to check status of my claim, and after 32 minutues of being on hold they said they would only pay me $45 for the $383 claim I filed. The only reason they gave me was that is the maximum amount we will pay. I can understand them not paying full amount, but be fair. I cancelled my policy immediately. Buyer beware!

Response from Colonial Home Warranty
Dear Angie's List, This claim was handled well within our terms of service which the customer agreed to when he purchased our coverage. This plan was purchased online by the customer who had to agree to our terms as part of the purchase. Colonial sends an email confirmation to the customer upon processing and also mails a hard copy of our service terms to the home. Our service terms are also available on our web site for anyone to review at any time. This customer filed a claim on Saturday November 5th 2011 at 5:28 PM EST. The claim was assigned to an approved service vendor on the spot. The customer called back 20 minutes later stating he could not get in touch with the service vendor and needs immediate service. Colonial explained to the customer that he can hire his own vendor if this is an emergency and file for reimbursement, the reimbursement would be at Colonial's cost to perform a similar job. Our service terms clearly state that we are not an emergency service provider and that we do not guarantee the scheduling of appointments or the availability of our service vendors outside of standard business hours. We do make a best effort to facilitate a claim after hours but if the customer insists on immediate service we do explain that they can hire their own vendor and file for reimbursement which will be at our pricing. Our terms state: III. Service Calls-To Request Service: 1-877-808-0009 A. Colonial must be notified by either you or your agent (or tenant) as soon as a problem is discovered in order for work to be covered. Colonial accepts calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round at 1-877-808-0009. Colonial must receive notice of any malfunction prior to the end of the coverage period. B. Colonial will contact an authorized service provider within two (2) business days following a request of service during normal business hours, excluding holidays. An approved service provider will contact you to schedule a convenient time during normal business hours. However, should you request to have service outside of normal business hours, you will be responsible for payment of additional fees and/or overtime charges. Colonial will determine if the situation indicates an emergency and will make efforts to facilitate emergency service. Colonial is not an emergency service provider. C. Colonial reserves the sole right to select the approved service provider to perform any and all necessary services. Please note that Colonial will NOT reimburse for any services performed without prior approval from Colonial. Any reimbursement approved by Colonial will be at Colonial’s average cost to perform a similar repair. D. You will be required to pay a $60 service call fee for each item to be diagnosed by a service provider, or the actual cost, whichever is less. The service fee is for each item to be diagnosed by a service provider approved by Colonial, and is payable to the Colonial approved service provider at the time of each visit. The service fee will apply to each call, including those calls where coverage is denied. The service fee is also payable by you if you fail to be present at a scheduled time or if you cancel a service call while a service provider is in route to your location or at your location. Any failure to pay the service fee will result in suspension and cancellation of coverage until such time that the proper service fee is paid, at which time coverage may be reinstated; however the coverage period will not be extended. E. Should the service work performed by an approved service provider fail, Colonial will have the approved service provider make the necessary repairs without any additional service fees for a period of 30 days following the date of the original service work. Our full terms are available at our website. Per our terms we did offer the customer a reimbursement based on our standard business hour rates to perform this job. The customer was not happy with the reimbursement and canceled his coverage. Colonial processed a refund per our cancellation terms. We do apologize that this customer was not satisfied with our coverage. The customer did sign up for these terms and accepted these terms with his online purchase. Colonial even offers a 30 day review period where a customer can cancel for a full refund if unsatisfied with our terms. We do hope that this does not negatively affect our standing with your web site. This customer did not want to understand that he purchased a warranty policy which does come with a set of terms and conditions. Regards, Colonial Home Warranty Complaints Department

AMAZING!!! I love this policy, we have used it several times for the A/C the pool and some minor electrical problems. I just used it for an A/C issue that would have cost me $545.00 but it was a simple $45.00 service fee. I even bought a policy for my mother in Pennsylvania. LOVE IT!!
