Background:A Groupon was purchased in April 2012 (10-man-hours for home improvement projects; $109 instead of $750; Link: http://www.groupon.com/wilmington-newark/deals/ferris-home-improvements) . An estimate was obtained in July 2012 for the work identified to be performed and the estimate came in under the $750 allowance under the Groupon. Subsequently, materials were purchased, a Scope-of-Work was signed & the Groupon was presented. A call to Ferris was made after returning these documents so that the project could be scheduled. At that point, a "scheduler" informed me that the Groupon would not be honored and a refund would need to be sought from Groupon. No one from Ferris beyond the scheduler had advised me of this, and no reason was provided other than too many Groupons were sold & they could not be honored. There are several key items to note during this exchange with Ferris:1) The voucher for services was clearly within expiry (October 2012).2) The method of payment had been discussed during the actual estimate & provided with returned Scope of Work. 3) No communication from Ferris management or contractor had been received to advise of inability to honor Groupon voucher.4) Additional work (non-voucher related) with a greater scope (kitchen demolition/installation) would have been considered in the future based on completion of this smaller job. 5) Groupon has the ability to set limits of vouchers sold - therefore, if the number within Ferris' contract with Groupon was not explicitly stated, then Groupon had every right to sell as many as they did. Per Groupon, Ferris would only allow 2 vouchers to be honored per week and those jobs not booked by October would not be honored. (There was no "first come first serve" clause within the Groupon voucher, and that services had been sought in July.)6) Ferris' website states that "quality workmanship from a neighbor you can trust" and that they display "honesty" and "professionalism". None of these exchanges (or those expected but did not occur) exemplify the qualities that they display. 7) The scheduler indicated that of the 250 vouchers sold, only 50 would be honored. Obviously there are many other disappointed customers. Wilmington, Delaware is a small enough city that everyone knows everyone else. Ferris not only lost me as a future customer with this exchange, but will also lose business from friends & family seeking recommendations for home improvement specialists. Ferris is not customer friendly, nor business savvy.

They are home improvement people and they do a bunch of different things. They were efficient and honest. They were on time and did what they said they would do. Their price was competitive. We plan to use them again.

Initially I spoke with Walter Ferris, the owner to schedule someone to come to the house and a**** a small leak in the roof so that we could get ahead of the issue before it became a big deal. Walter was very pleasant and very responsive to my concerns regarding the overall condition of my roof. He had sent out his estimator ( cant remember his name- as my husband was at the house during the call) who was very professional, articulate and lovely to deal with per my husband, They assessed our situation and provided the roof maintainer package for us the following day. They had discussed when our roof may be due for a replacement which we would obviously perform if needed. However, we have recently been addressing other issues in the house like a new heater/ac unit and other large cost projects and frankly we are not really in the position to do a new roof. Every other contractor we had out had tried to sell us into a new one. Ferris was a breath of fresh air by understanding our position and working with us to give us a solution that will buy us some time. When we are ready for a new roof we will be calling Ferris when we are in a position to do a new roof as well as complete the many other needed projects. As far as cost, I am not sure if $265 is a lot of money for the work performed but either way its less than a new roof and it had solved the problem of bad flashing around the chimney causing a small leak- so I guess that's priceless. I was also surprised to learn about all of the other services they are able to perform. We have a contemporary house that is stuck in the 1970's and is in desperate need of an update and there are some things I just cant do myself. I am looking forward to working with them in the future.
