Mark was really great to deal with, he answered all phone calls and texts promptly (even on the weekends). Was a little disappointed with the quality of work in one of the rooms (I mean a little disappointed..some may call me picky) . The did not remove the toe kick prior to sanding, which resulted in a small line of old stain around the room (after staining, they then removed the toe kick and replace it with new stuff, which was a couple of mm smaller). Upon completion, they also did put any of the rad covers back or remove any of the tape/plastic. For a couple of days we were unsure if they were even finished. Turns out they were, and upon calling Mark, he came asap to put everything back in its place. Also, just a note, we slept in the basement during the work and found it very smelly. Would reccommend to others to find another place to sleep, at least during the staining/varnishing part.

Overall we were incredibly happy with our experience with Universal Floors. We worked with Mark, who was so helpful even though we had some budget constraints and a very short timeline. He met with us on a Sunday so we could pick out our floors (we chose UA mahogany) and was very flexible as we worked out permission with our co-op board. They were definitely on the expensive side, but well worth the cost. When they removed the existing parquet they found that the floor wasn't totally level, but it would have been many thousands of dollars more to level it, so they turned the wood the other was and made it work beautifully. Everyone one of their employees was pleasant, and we were very happy with the job. I highly recommend this team.

Great customer service! From the estimate to the scheduling to the performance of the work, we were extremely happy with Universal Floors and would definitely use them again! Everyone from the estimator, to the office folks, to the crew was professional and helpful. I gave the Price section a grade of N/A because after meeting with the estimator from Universal Floors we were so pleased with his service that we did not get any other estimates. Therefore, I cannot accurately rate their prices compared to other companies. However, we were so happy with the service and the work that we did not think twice about not having other estimates. I highly recommend Universal Floors!

South and his crew came in after another contractor did a terrible job installing hardwood flooring secondary to a major flood in my home. He took the time and energy to explain what should have been done (by previous contractor) and what is needed to install the floors properly. While the job was completed quickly, what I found just as rewarding was the education that he provided to me as well as his professionalism and curtsey. His crew worked amazingly fast and effeciently and CLEANLY!!!!!!!. I higly reccomened South and Universal Floors. He made a miserable experince much, much better! and he is a nice guy

We live in a 1939 colonial house with red oak floors that had some gouges and stains requiring several boards to be replaced. I was attracted to Universal Floors because they stock reclaimed wood that matches the old growth wood in houses like mine. They also were willing to start by replacing the boards and finishing them to be as close a match as possible to the existing floor so we could hopefully avoid having to have our entire first floor sanded and refinished. Then they gave me a separate price for full sanding and refinishing in the event we weren't happy with the replacement and finishing of the few damaged boards. Their technician, Nelson, came today and did an amazing job replacing the damaged boards. It is now impossible to tell the "new" boards from the old ones, so we saved a lot of money and, just as important, avoided the huge inconvenience and mess of a full refinishing job. I am so grateful to have found Universal Floors and recommend them without hesitation.

I have been dealing with Universal Floors for 26+ years, during which time they installed new floors and refinished old floors. The representative I’ve been dealing with for about 10 years is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and responsive. Dealing with him and the fact that Univeral’s standards are very high has made me a multi-repeat customer. The employee who did the work was a true artisan. He was meticulous in protecting the house from dust, he did a wonderful job of matching the stain to the stain on floors in adjoining rooms; and a magnificent job overall. I have referred many people to Universal Floors. I will continue to do so and to use them myself, as needed.

I sent Universal an email requesting information about installing new hardwood floors. 2 days later JP called and we set an appointment for him to come out. He came on the 8th on time as planned. He took measurements and said he would get back to me. He really didn't have much to say or information and to me didn't seem interested in doing any work....maybe because it was a small job Its now 7 days later and I have not heard anything from Universal/JP. I've moved on to another company.

Response from Universal Floors Inc
I researched the issue and found JP had created a quote on the same day as the report. Perhaps he could have been quicker but often when it is a specialty item can take a few days for mills to get back with us on the pricing and availability. I will have JP call and find out if the email was in fact received by the customer and the issue is they did not see the email rather than us not responding with a price for the services requested.

Overall we were very satisfied with the work they did. Mark Amero was easy to work with. He was flexible in scheduling a consultation during a narrow window when we were able to obtain access to a home we had under contract but had not yet purchased, and he provided a quote quickly. I was impressed that he was able to offer to replace several sagging or cracked heart pine boards that were probably about 100 years old with salvaged boards. The only problem with the project was that a couple of these replacement boards cracked soon after installation, but he was very responsive and came out to inspect the boards. There was a delay in replacing them because Universal Floors had to procure additional boards, but they did eventually complete the work to our satisfaction. One important part of the project is that we needed the work to be done during a narrow window between closing on the purchase of the home on a Monday and moving in the following Saturday. Universal Floors committed to being able to meet our timeline. They worked quickly, starting on Tuesday and finishing the work by Friday so that we could move in on schedule. We selected Universal Floors both because of their high rating on Angie's List and the recommendation of a friend who had hired them to refinish her floors. Our floors looked so much better after they were done! I would hire them again if we needed work on wood floors.

My hardwood floors (Living Room/Dining Room) were badly scratched with a few cracked boards. Universal Floors replaced the badly damaged planks, and then sanded/refinished the complete room. The flooring looks like new again. I would definitely recommend and use again and am recommending to friends for installation of hardwood floors.

I initially looked at the floor when it was wet, and from the bottom of the stairs, and it seemed fine. However, after it dried and I could examine it in detail, I almost cried. The first thing I noticed that there was extensive damage to the baseboards that could in no way be considered touch-ups. This included a deep gouge that was 1/8 inch deep into the wood and about 1/2 inch wide. All baseboards had gouges, and black abrasions from the sander's housing that would not be covered by the shoe molding. Most corners on the floor throughout were not sanded and appeared to only have only one coat. This included every single closet they had been contracted to do. In addition, all closets and thresholds appeared to only have one coat and were so rough as to make it impossible to sweep or otherwise clean them. Every piece of baseboard and door jamb had varnish slopped all over them, their were several spots on the walls that had varnish splashed as high as 2 and1/2 feet up the wall. There was no finish under the bullnose on stairs and while the newel posts on the stairs had varnish all over each one. Strangely, the floor around them was not completely varnished at all. I still owed them $900 dollars and called them up and refused to pay until all these defects were fixed. They did come over to re-coat the floor and it was much better,(acceptable, not stellar), but they refused to take any responsibility for the damaged paint job stating that touchups were to be performed by others. My friend, the interior carpenter was horrified at the bad job that was done. He told his boss and as they had had problems with Universal on another job, they will not be using them again. As for me, I have spent the last week re-sanding, and re-priming ALL the baseboards in preparation for a complete repainting, which I have to do. I have also been touching up spots on the floor that were still poorly varnished. I suppose I could have insisted they correct this, but at some point you just want to get contractors like this out of the house before they damage something else.
Description of Work: I had a terrible experience with this company!!!!!! On the recommendation of a friend, who is an interior carpenter, and whose company had used Universal for years, I entered into a contract with them to sand and refinish a flight of steps, the upstairs hallway, and the master bedroom. This job included one closet in the hallway and two closets in the master bedroom. They were contracted to put on two coats of polyurethane. We had just had a paint job put on in those rooms less than a week earlier. The contract with Universal stated that "touch-ups low on the baseboards" would probably be required on the walls and baseboards. All shoe molding had been removed on all baseboards.

Mark Amero, Hugo, and the gang from Universal saved our floor! After a very bad experience with a low-bid contractor, we turned to Universal to help us salvage the situation. Mark came out and gave a very reasonable estimate, even suggesting a way to make use of the existing flooring so that we could save about $1,000. Hugo the crew chief was prompt, professional, and incredibly good. The floor looks great! Good as new. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I hate to gush, but Mark Amero and the folks at Universal Floors in Washington DC did an outstanding job installing a gorgeous 4and rdquo; Rift and Quartered White Oak engineered wood floor (on-slab) in our new sunroom. In addition Universal Floors constructed two custom oak 5' treads (steps) with risers to mach. Universal Floors also installed cork underlayment to help insulate the wood flooring from the concrete slab. The flooring was sanded and then finished with Golden Oak stain and two coats of polyurethane finish. While not the cheapest guy in town, the level of expertise, craftsmanship, and their ability to come in, get the work done and leave in a very reasonable amount of time made for a very positive experience. In an age of prefinished wood flooring, the overall appearance of a more traditional floor really stands out as a piece of quality craftsmanship. Universal Floors was prompt, very reliable, extremely competent, professional, and well worth the money. Although we were on a tight budget, I felt we received excellent value for our money. Do not hesitate!

I contacted Universal, which I had used previously. They sent an estimator promptly; I had to wait about 3 weeks for the work to be done...of course I was impatient and would've liked it to happen sooner, but quality is worth the wait. As promised, the work took several hours each over two days. All debris was removed. Dust happens. I don't expect to have any further floor work for years, but I won't consider anyone but Universal.
Description of Work: This project involved floor repairs; I had widened the opening to a hall closet, which led to ugly gaps in the hardwood floors underneath. Universal successfully matched the existing white-oak flooring with vintage wood from its warehouse, "toothed" it in to look as if it had been there all along, and finished to blend. This is the third time I have used Universal Floors. I have always been extremely pleased with their courtesy, professionalism, and service. They came recommended by my building manager (I live in a northwest DC condo), and are used to accommodating the rules and restrictions that condo buildings often impose.

I was exceedingly pleased with Universal and would highly recommend them; in fact, I intend to use them again soon to refinish the floor in another bedroom. They original estimate was done carefully and clearly, and they were able to answer all of my questions. I was particularly concerned about the right kind of riser for the connection from the family room to the adjacent kitchen, since because the kitchen is on a concrete slab, and has ceramic tile, it is much higher than the connecting wood floor. the workmen arrived on time, were polite, efficient, and diligent. They worked the entire day from 8-4 or 4:30, and finished the job precisely when they said they would. During the job, the original estimator came out to inspect to see how things were going, and he noticed that the living room had white oak, but the family room had red oak and that the transition between the two might be noticeable. To address this issue, he proposed the insertion of some transition planks that would in essence "ease" the difference between the two rooms and make the color difference less noticeable (since we had decided not to stain the floors). The workmen did a beautiful job--you can't notice a thing. In addition, he had a special workman come to complete a custom riser, since the transition between the kitchen and family room was not easy to do. Two years later, the riser is perfect. One that another company had done a few years ago was done incorrectly, and it cracked and splintered and had to be removed. Universal knows what they are doing and I would use them again, no question.
Description of Work: Universal came to refinish the floors in our hallway, powder room, coat closet, living room, family room, stairway, hallway and 2 small bedrooms. They sanded and sealed the floors with a durable finish. We decided not to get the floors stained, but left them a natural color.

I'm very happy with the refinished floors and new molding. Initially, I requested a natural finish without a stain, but some marks in the wood did not come out as anticipated when sanded. The workers helped me select the color of a stain to improve the appearance among three samples placed on the floor. The added stain did not change the price charged. The work took three days to complete, as scheduled. This was done before I moved into the home. Other rooms were protected from dust by plastic sheeting and doors were closed where possible. After moving in, I noticed an area in a hallway that seemed uneven and some scratches. The workers returned to smooth the uneven area and repair some spots. I was impressed with their responsiveness. The price was a little higher than an estimate from another contractor. The worker(s) arrived later than expected to begin due to delays in finishing another job. The staff in the office was helpful with coordination.
Description of Work: Hardwood floors were refinished in the combination living/dining room, hallway, closets and one bedroom. This included sanding, applying a stain, and oil base polyurethane to oak floors. Shoe molding was replaced and stained, too.

I hired Universal Flooring to install laminate flooring. At first glance,it looked like they did a good job, they arrived on time and completed the job on time. However, after closer inspection, I noticed a small hole in the floor near a wall and they opened my closet door too hard and created a hole in my closet door which they tried to conceal with putty.

Universal has worked on 3 separate projects for us and the outcome each time has been perfect. They did an AMAZING job each time -- I cannot recommend them more highly. The repaired areas blend in perfectly with the rest of the floors-- you cannot tell at all which is amazing given matching 100 year old oak is not easy. The workmen are fast and very professional. They put down several stain samples so I could choose the right color and were willing to come back and try more blends when I asked.

We thought it was a little bit expensive and we had to have them come back to do the work over again because they didn’t do everything that they were supposed to do. They came back at least once, maybe twice, to fix some of the work that they did. We have really old floors in a historic house so it was a tough job for them and I think they are a good company.
