Description of Work: Did not use the contractor. Scheduled a home visit for a wood floor replacement. Contractor was on time and courteous. My personal read...I did not get the impression he was all too interested in the job. He did not seem very engaged, did not take any measurements, but did provide a ball-park cost. I would most likely not use contractor because their services on the existing stairs (tread and risers) was limited to sanding and refinishing. My stairs need a bit more work.

Description of Work: The service this company provided was to send a knowledgeable estimator to review my job requirements and to give me a price. But although they said they would adhere to a short list of specific requirements I specified for repairing and refinishing a stairway in a historic property, they refused to put them in writing. I therefore chose another company whose price was nearly identical and who were more than willing to agree in writing to do what they said they would do.

Description of Work: Bob provided a quotation and fully answered my follow-up questions, but it took more time than I expected and I had to call him after a few days to find out whether he'd received the information I'd sent (we hadn't moved into the new house yet, so we couldn't do an on-site estimate, and everything was based off of photos and measurements/a schematic provided by me). Ultimately, we decided to go with another company, as Universal Floors' quotation was the fifth highest of the six I received; the services and scope were consistent across all six proposals.

+ -1 moreOverall very well. Everything went on time as promised. There was a problem in that the people who came to do the work were not thorough enough in covering things (as promised). When this was called to the attention of our contact, he went through great lengths to see extra clean-up was done and generally stayed with everything until we were happy. Also, they moved a good bit of furniture for us and came back days later to move it back for us. That was a major help. High marks to everyone there for a good operation (in spite of that one glitch).
Description of Work: The work involved refinishing the floors in 2 rooms (one room being the kitchen). This was part of a project that had been begun by others, so they had to finish lesser quality work someone else had started. This also involved matching finish color to adjacent floors that did not need doing.

+ -1 moreExcellent work. They did miss a spot on the stairs, but quickly came back to rectify the issue. Very easy to deal with, nice work. The are very flexible from a scheduling perspective. They were in and out very quickly.
Description of Work: They removed carpet from on top of hardwood floors, they sanded, removed some pet stains, then finished the flooring. We have an older house and the nice wood floors were hidden under the carpet.

+ -1 moreAfter getting a quote from Universal, I made the mistake of using my general contractor's guy instead. Several nightmares later, I hired Universal to get the job done right. They were responsive and professional, and the final product couldn't be better. They were more expensive but worth it.

The result is impressive -- everyone who comes into our home comments on how great the floors look, even professional renovators. My only regret is that we left carpeted areas in our house!
Description of Work: We had new hardwood floors installed in the master bedroom and upstairs hallway, and existing hardwood floors refinished in the dining room, living room, and entryway, and stairs.
