Toilet supply valve sarted leaking and I couldn't get it off the pipe. We were in a pinch. Found these guys, called, quoted price, sent terrific plumber, Jay. Fixed the problem in 20 min. The reason I put non-applicable next to price is that this was a weekend emergency repair.

I discovered on a Friday afternoon that the water tank (on the back of the toilet) was leaking. I attempted to fix it myself by going to the local hardware store, but to no resolution. I called Stevens Plumbing on Sunday and left a message. Mike, the dispatcher, called me back 8 am on Monday to discuss the problem and schedule an appointment. I scheduled it for Tuesday, even though he had openings on the same day. He gave me a general estimate over the phone based on my description and explained that the actual price may vary once the plumber looks the toilet. The plumber, Ed, came out early the next day. Stevens Plumbing called me to let me know that Ed was running early. After attempting to fix the toilet, Ed told me that the problem was a leaking water gasket, not the screws. Although he had one for my type of toilet with him, it didn't fit properly. Therefore, he went to the warehouse to get another at no charge to me! Upon returning, he successfully fitted a new gasket and tested it several times. I also looked at the toilet and tested it successfully. Stevens also waived the initial $75 service charge. Everyone involved was very friendly and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend Stevens Plumbing. I like that Stevens is a local DC business, too.

I had someone else that wanted 308.00 and so I called Stevens Co for a second opinion. They did a great job and charged a third of what another plumber was going to charge me. They were professional, were polite and showed me what was wrong. I would highly recommend them.

I called on a Friday afternoon and the soonest they could send someone out was Tuesday morning (or charge extra for weekend hours). Plumber was late. No big deal though. He was extremely nice, super-friendly, and probably loved my dog more than I do (I kid!). He had some trouble with our water shutoff valve and gave me advice on how to go about getting an estimate to replace it. He was able to replace the valve and re-do the vanity drain pipe in an hour, which thrilled me as they charge hourly. I dinged them on the quality rating just a tad. While I am happy with the work I wish aesthetics were more of a focus, even though we are talking about plumbing. I asked if the plumber could throw on a new decorative cover (chrome cap behind the valve that covers the hole in the wall) on the supply valve as the old one has paint on it and looks terrible. I figure a plumber with a big ole plumber's van would probably have a couple of these. But he didn't have any new covers and now with a new valve installed, it's too late. And the plumbing done for the sink works wonderfully, it just looks kind of used and dirty. Overall, minor niggles. The guy was friendly and I was pleased with the price. I would use them again.

gas leak repair

Just completed a job with Stevens Plumbing and they did an excellent job getting our heat back on quickly by fixing 3 gas lines to 3 different condos. So last night we had a leak on 3 of our gas lines to 3 different condos...each having it's own unique problems. This morning I called several companies asking for someone to come out and it was nearly impossible to get anyone the same day. Fortunately, I called Richard from Stevens Plumbing and he cleared his schedule to have a technician (Wayne K - same name...I know) come out to help us. I asked what he thought the 3 jobs would cost and he guessed a total of around $1000, which was considerably cheaper when looking at the reviews/prices on Angie's List of other plumbing companies, so I was comfortable taking his quote. The technician, Wayne, came out within 30 minutes and was extremely nice and explained everything that needed to be done. He said the issues with the gas lines were unusual to have holes, but got everything fixed within a few hours. The best part was that he broke out the pricing for each unit so each condo owner got a price respective of how much work was done for each gas line.Overall, I had an excellent experience. They were punctual, quick, and cheap...which is really all you can ask for. I wish all plumbing companies were like this.pa
Description of Work: Fixed 3 gas lines for 3 different condos. Very punctual and work was done below quoted cost. The first gas line needed a ring replaced near the joint. The second gas line needed part of the gas line replaced due to a hole The third gas line need a longer line replaced due to a hole. Completed on-time, quickly, and under quote.

A gas I hired Stevens to replace a 10-year old 50-gallon GE water heater in the two-unit rowhouse I own on Monroe St, NW, in DC. The old unit was failing in recent years (last year a bad thermocouple; this year a leaky tank), so I went and just replaced it with a new A.O. Smith 50-gallon unit. I called around to a few plumbers (Thos E Clark, Haynes, Brookland, and Master Plumbing) and either they were about as expensive as Stevens or were busy. One thing I would like to say about DC plumbers is that they've gotten ridiculously expensive over the past 10-15 years (now about $165+/hr rate, plus the inane $75+ fee just for walking in the door). I had Haynes install the old water heater in 2002 for $580 (all inclusive). The new one (a base model, nothing fancy, plus a new expansion tank) cost me $1350, of which the tank itself was $595. So, there is some massive price inflation going on with DC-area plumbers. My original quote from Stevens for all of the work would have been about $1500, but I negotiated with Richard (the owner) and he reduced the final price $150. The house is less than 1 mile from their shop, so perhaps he gave me a discount for the proximity. I would have gone with Brookland or someone else if he hadn't given the discount. The plumbers were a little slow getting to the house and worked for about 3 hours. They had to dismantle and reattach some gas lines and redo a copper water line to replace the water heater, which accounts for some extra time and materials that were required in my case. Aside from the price gouging endemic with DC plumbers, my experience with Stevens was good. Richard was professional with me and was willing to negotiate, and the plumbers were polite and professional, as well. I would hire Stevens again in the future, but only if the price is acceptable. My general advice for choosing a plumber in DC would be to find someone you can negotiate with and trust over a long period of time. Having worked with several in DC and Chicago, having a reliable trusting, long-term relationship will be helpful in getting good prices and service. Ask friends for referrals -- don't just depend on Angie's List, which can still be a bit of a crap shoot, especially when it comes to pricing. If it's possible to agree on a price before the work is begun, I strongly recommend you do so.
Description of Work: The old water heater was removed and a new water heater and expansion tank were installed. The gas line had to be removed and reinstalled to reach the water heater, and a new copper water line had to be installed.

Issue with Stevens is the cost. I was not aware there was a destination charge of $79 in addition to hourly rate. Seems high. I selected Stevens because of its close proximity to my house. After receiving the bill, I contacted the manager (owner?) who was not willing to negotiate and lectured me as to how all plumber businessess have to cover routine costs either through special charges or higher rates. Be sure to understand hourly and other costs if using this firm.
Description of Work: Had discovered wet kitchen ceiilng right before July 4th holiday. Researched plumbers on Angie's list. Called Stevens and manager talked with me and persuaded me that probably not a pin hold leak (my concern) and that further damage would not occur if I delayed doing something. Company scheduled me for early call on first business day after the holiday. Technician determined leak likely from shower water running down behind tiling on wall/tub. Recaulked part of tub area. Asked technician to look at plumbing behind tub. He did and I had him replace some old piping. Pleased with technician's attitude and work.

Update for August 30: I sent my complaint to the property management company of my condo building. And they forwarded it to the office manager of Stevens Plumbing. He made good regarding my complaint by doing the following things: He apologized profusely for the behavior of the technician who came earlier. He sent a different technician first thing in the morning to fix a leak under my bathroom sink. He offered not to charge me a $75 visit fee this time. He offered to give me a discount on labor and materials for the service. The new tech was punctual and professional and fixed the leak. I was given a time slot of between 2 and 4 PM. Nobody called me to tell me that they were running late. I had to call them. They did not show up until 4:45 PM. I called them to figure out why I could no longer get water to come out of my kitchen faucet. I tried to figure out what the problem was myself before they got there and made the problem worse. When I explained this to situation to the plumber he got snarky with me about breaking my own faucet. He then stated I would have to buy a new kitchen faucet. He charged me $75 just for showing up and then left. Before he left said he would come back after I bought a new kitchen faucet and install it without charging me another $75 show-up fee. However, for someone who was running late he should have been more apologetic. Instead his entire manner was rude. I wouldn't want these people to come back even if they did not charge me another service call fee.
Description of Work: Update for August 30: They came and fixed a leak underneath my bathroom sink. I was charged $75.00 just for someone to show up at the door (late) and tell me I had to buy a new faucet. They were supposed to fix my kitchen and bathroom faucet.

Stevens Plumbing were good to work with because they run an extremely professional. The work performed was great and if there was an issue they quickly stepped in and fixed it. They promptly returned phone calls and quickly responded to emergencies. I will continue to call them for any plumbing or my gas furnace needs I have going forward. Stevens Plumbing office staff are professional, friendly, reliable and responsive. "Fitz" provided us with a quote and then worked with us to get to a price we could live with. There was one overall plumber who did the majority of the work. He worked very well with my contractor. It was easy for him to schedule "George" and address any issues and "George" would perform the work when he was supposed to. "Fitz" from the office checked in with me to ensure things were going well. They were flexible in getting paid either via credit card or check. There were
Description of Work: I worked with Stevens Plumbing on a number of projects when i renovated a house built in 1927. Radiators: The house has old radiators we wanted to keep. Stevens Removed superfluous radiators and relocated radiators after walls were moved. Fixed pipes, installed new valves. Plumbing: Handled the rough in for a new 1/2 bath, installed new toilet and sink for completely renovated full bath and set a clafoot tub. Installed new toilet in downstairs full bath Last but not least Stevens snaked all my pipes and later diagnosed an issue with the city "trap" and reported it to DC so they could ultimately resolve the issue.

I paid Stevens $130 to locate a submeter outside of my home and to ascertain whether it fed into my hoses. They went to the basement, looked at the main valve, and said "It should be here, I don't know." I got on my hands and knees to dig up two control boxes in the front yard to see if the submeter was in there, while the tech stood around, watched and talked on his cell phone. They told us they would call WSCC to determine the submeter location and never did, admitting they "should have but forgot." After an hour at my house they left. I subsequently spent two minutes on the phone with WSSC and was told the exact location of the submeter. The plumber sent to our home spent most of the time on the telephone and then trying to convince me to spend $700 on a backflow that I do not need. But doing the job called for? No. And then admitting a waste of my time and money, and trying to make it right? No. After I found the location of the submeter, they came back for free. It took ten minutes to open up the submeter and determine that it was not connected to my hoses. Nevertheless, I still had to pay them for an hour of useless service and they wasted my time -- not once but twice.

First start was installing new touchless flushers. Then they did the acid wash and snaking of the pipes. Next was the vents..which were likely clogged a little. Then a part did the real full fix. great work guys! I am very happy with it.
Description of Work: I am submitting a 2nd review for Steven's company. The first time they worked at my house. This time they came in and fixed our urinals at work. The urinals were installed 50 years ago and are tricky to get to work perfectly. They installed new parts, did some cleaning of the pipes and the vents and then installed a small part that ultimately solved the problem. I was grateful that they gave me a huge discount on the hours since it took a number of different tries to eventually get the toilets to flush and clear fully. The other work they did was likely helpful and needed to be done anyway.

Stevens indicated to me up front that there are at times difficulties with the installation of a Bosch to standard connections. So I was prepared for such a complication, and I experienced it. The installation could not be completed on the first visit, because it required a different electrical connection and so I first had to get a new electric outlet installed under the sink. Stevens was responsive and accommodating about the service dates, and but I was not pleased with the actual service process. The first Stevens visit was basically a lengthy visit to examine the situation of the existing connections and to figure out the configuration and installation of the Bosch. I had expected that having told Stevens that i needed a Bosch installed, I would get someone who had familiarity with Bosch products. The technician called the office a couple of times with questions, but seemed to have obtained some misinformation - which did not actually apply to my model.. The Stevens technician was clearly a dishwasher veteran who knew what he was doing, and he did the work "to code" and got it done. But he was very slowly, somewhat disorganized with his materials, sweating and talking himself out loud through virtually every step of the process - mostly why something/ that sucker "would not work that way" - though eventually, of course, it always did work, after much muttering and groaning and looking for screws and tools; it ended OK, but was a bit had on the nerves.
Description of Work: The service was to install a new Bosch Dishwasher to replace an older American-made model, which I indicated when ordering the service.

Description of Work: I contacted Steven's Plumbing to have them move a gas line in my kitchen (I moved my stove to the other side of the kitchen), install the water line for a dishwasher, and repair a pipe leak in the front of my rowhouse. Fitz contacted me right away and provided an estimate which was the most cost-effective of the 3 estimates I received from other companies. He indicated that he could start work in a couple of days. They called about 30 min before they came to tell me they were on the way - and were there within the 2 hr window that they gave me. The guy listened to the leak, but was unable to start putting holes in the wall himself. He called the office to ask for help - I think he was worried about moving my furniture and my hardwood floors. We had to wait about 30 min for a 2nd guy to comeover - but they never told me how long it would take - and they charged me for the wait time (meanwhile the 1st guy was outside smoking). They came inside and very very good about moving my furniture and covering it as well as covering my floor. They poked 3 large holes in my wall and ceiling and could not find the issue. They left to put away the ladder and some of their stuff and another smoke break (they were gone at least 15 min). They came back and were very good about cleaning up and putting my furniture back but then left again. I asked how much I owed and the 1st guy said he had to call the office and would be right back. He was gone at least another 15 min (and another smoke break -- I could see him outside and smell him when he came back). While I appreciated how they took care of my furniture, as well as how well they cleaned up everything -- I really felt I was over charged. I was charged their inital fee and for 2 hours of work. They never found the problem, and there was a lot of down time. I probably would not use this firm again.

First the tank as replaced, which stopped the leak we were having. However, a couple of weeks later our heat shut off. I was referred to them by my condo management company. I think Stevens is an okay company but they have bad communication. The first plumber that came charged by the hour but he had a messy truck and it took him awhile to find his tools. Then I needed a part which took months to get; they said it would be there at the end of the week but it took a couple of months and no one called to tell me. It just felt half hazard. I was told when they finally brought the part that there would be no charge for labor but I got a bill. I called and he said he?d check into and call me back but he never did. I finally paid for the part but not the labor which I thought was fair. I have no way to compare the price. I don?t think my expectations are that high but they were not professional. I might use this company again but I'd rather not.

Great. Business was very courteous in calling to let me know they were on their way and when they would arrive in the two hour window that was scheduled. Early Sunday morning, toilet stopped up . . . unstopped with multiple plunges, but then flow through ceiling to dining room below. YUK. Checked Emily's list, called Stevens, got a very professional answering service and a call back within 10 minutes asking for details, explaining thoroughly the added price of coming on Sunday (even suggesting not necessary if we had another bathroom--which we don't), and, after assuring that we did want someone to come, saying someone would be here in about an hour if not before. Very pleasant young man showed up in 50 minutes. Professional, polite, quick. Done and done, from entry to repair to invoice, in about 30 minutes. Followup call on Monday to check service and confirm charge. Would like to clone these guys.
