Response from Polar Bear Air Conditioning And Heating Inc
THE NATURE OF A BUSINESS IN WHICH TECHNICIANS MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE AND ENCOUNTER UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES IS THAT WE CANNOT ASCERTAIN HOW LONG AN APPOINTMENT WILL RUN. THE WHOLE DAY’S SCHEDULE THEREFORE IS FLUID. OUR COMPETITOR COMPANIES GENERALLY PROVIDE A 4 HOUR ARRIVAL WINDOW, BUT POLAR BEAR’S WINDOW STANDS AT TWO HOURS FOR CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE. WE TYPICALLY STATE THAT OUR TECHNICIAN(S) WILL ARRIVE BETWEEN X AND X TIME, FOR EXAMPLE BETWEEN 9 AND 11 AM. IN PRACTICE, THIS MEANS THAT THE TECHNICIAN MAY ARRIVE RIGHT AT 9 AM, OR HE MAY ARRIVE AT 10:55 TO BEGIN WORK ON THE UNIT. WE REALIZE THAT OUR COMMUNICATION IN THIS CASE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN CLEAR. WE WISH TO APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE CAUSED TO THE CUSTOMER. WE HOPE THAT THE CUSTOMER WILL BE OPEN TO THE REESTABLISHMENT OF A SATISFYING RELATIONSHIP WITH POLAR BEAR. SINCERELY, THE POLAR BEAR TEAM.

Called in the morning with the problem, the coordinator/receptionist was great on the phone and had me booked for that afternoon. The technician showed up 15 mins. Into the promised window of time. Worked quickly and efficiently. Will use again.
Description of Work: Addressed an issue with my air conditioning not draining properly. Polar Bear immediately determined the root cause of the issue, made the fix, and then performed some general checking on the system overall. The technician took time to explain what I should do to maintain it and avoid the issue in the future. Also had them check and add freon, it was done quickly and efficiently.

Called Polar and Joe Kelly came out to give me an estimate. He understands the complexities of outfitting these narrow row-houses with central A/C. He suggested a rooftop system that I had not even considered. After thoroughly discussing this with him, I went with that plan. His crew arrived on schedule and worked hard for 2 days and got the job done quickly and efficiently. They cleaned up at the end of the day. Joe's job manager is great to work with as well. I had a small leak after the installation that showed up after the first hard rain. Polar came out right away and corrected the problem. I have already recommended Polar to some folks in my neighborhood. They do very good work.

Joe Kelly came out himself and walked us through what we needed and how the whole process worked. He was very helpful and he was very slow and deliberate, he seemed to know that spending $5K was a big deal to us. We took his information and called him the next day to confirm we wanted to go with his company after a couple of other estimates. Instead of doing it over the phone, he came back in person to do the paperwork and came the very next day and had our new unit in within 3 hours. Professional and friendly throughout the whole process, would definitely recommend.

The receptionist was excellent. The technician did a great job informing me when he would arrive. The service check was where things fell apart a bit. The technician got the roof unit and indicated things were satisfactory. My equipment is old and the technician recommended budgeting for a new system soon. When we went into the attic, the technician was unable to access the A/C unit (he was a bit large). The unit was obviously put in poorly so you had to squirm to the back to reach it. I have crawled to it many times replacing filters. he technician indicated he would let the home office know that he couldn't reach the unit and they would send someone else. He didn't charge me since the service was incomplete. The office never called to reschedule. I never followed up.

Great. The job was well done and Joe really worked with us as we went through a few delays in settlement on the house. Polar bear came in right after closing and installed the unit. They cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with. I wish I could say the same about all contractors.
Description of Work: Polar Bear installed a new HVAC unit. They did quality work at a good price. They were also incredibly accommodating with our schedule and the customer service was top notch. I would absolutely hire them again (though hopefully I won't need to for a while : ).

This company is excellent. I called on Sunday morning. My central air had shut off during the first day of the fist big heatwave of the year. Mr. Kelly called me back within half an hour! He came and did an estimate Monday and arrived exactly at the time he had set up. The work was done within a few days, a pleasant surprise during a heat wave. The workmen were prompt and polite and the work was completed before noon on the day it was promised. They left my attic (where the unit is) neater than I had left it! I will definitely call this company again.

We were very happy with Polar Bear...the positive reviews on Angie's List were spot on. Joe, the owner, was the best of all the estimators we talked with - professional, on-time, friendly, and patient with all our questions. We were willing to go with them even if they were not the low-bid. However, they came in almost $1000 lower than the other bids we got. The job was scheduled within 7 days of signing the contract. Mike, the lead technician, was a great guy and also answered all our questions, and allowed us to review all the work they were doing up on the roof. I could tell that he took pride in his, and the crew's, work. Apart from a few clangs as they lowered parts of the old unit off of the roof, the crew was professional and careful of our property. They also went the extra mile to re-work part of the ducting on the roof to improve the system's performance - even though that wasn't in the initial statement of work. (Because of this added work, they didn't need to do something that was in the statement of work - so Joe did not change the price of the job.) Joe says that they do almost half their work on Capitol Hill, so are very familiar with all the quirks of these old homes. We were extremely happy with Polar Bear and would recommend them to all our neighbors on the Hill.

I was very pleased with Polar Bear's service. Joe came right on time to provide an estimate, and quickly identified the problems with the sub-par central air system that had been installed by the previous owner of my 1920s row house. He identified a solution to our warm master bedroom suite, correctly noting that it did not have enough ducts for a southwestern exposure room. When Mike and his crew came to do the work, they were right on time, amazingly efficient, and careful. They hoisted the new compressor onto my roof in about half an hour, put in the new air handler and ducting, and were done before lunch. hey ordered a custom filter-grate and came about a week later to install it. And the acid test came this June, when it hit 98 degrees. We are nice and cool (about 10 degrees cooler than before) and our bedroom is particularly cool. Good company!
Description of Work: Polar Bear replaced the old compressor and air handler in my row house, installed new ductwork to a bedroom, and installed a new filter grate.

I had used Polar Bear four previous times to fix my heating and cooling systems. The first three times, Joe (the owner) came out and did the work and was great. Last fall when my AC stopped working, I scheduled someone to come out and they never showed. Because I had used them before and had good experiences, I decided to try again. Joe came out and fixed the problem. My AC is now not working again, so I called and asked if I could speak to Joe about it. The receptionist informed me that he no longer does service calls and schedule me with another repairman. That person was supposed to come today, but he never showed up and he never called. I tried to call the office and the phone just rang and rang. I am now using the list to find another, hopefully reliable, contractor.
Description of Work: Repaired both heating and AC units.

Arrived on time, used my bathroom first, went to the roof and diagnosed it as low in freon. He put 3 pounds of freon at a little less than $50 a gallon, labor was $120 and charged $129 for travel. This is almost double the estimate. The $129 fee for travel does not make sense.
Description of Work: The Condenser was frozen, so I told them that it most likely requires freon. Over the phone gave me cost estimate of around $200-$250.

Very satisfied. I had several companies come out to provide estimates. Polar Bear's estimate was the lowest for non-builder's grade equipment. I also appreciated that Joe Kelly (the owner) was the one who came out and gave me the estimate. He was much more knowledgeable about our existing equipment and the new equipment than any of the other sale people that came out. The installation went smoothly and the A/C is running fine.

I called on a Thursday, and the repair man showed first thing Monday morning. I was a little worried about an unmarked van and a big guy in shorts coming to the door. He worked quickly and efficiently, however and got the job done.
Description of Work: The repair man determined the source of a leaking condenser to be a blocked drain. He cleared the line, cleaned the condenser coils as well as possible, and resealed the PVC drain after installing a T so that the line could be periodically flushed.

I could not be happier! I came to DC to oversee the roofing job on my father's house. I had made an appointment with the HVAC people who my father had been dealing with. I was not very confident after my phone conversation with them prior to my arrival, so I called Polar Bear, based on Angie's List references. The owner (Joe Kelly) and I spoke prior to my arrival and made an appointment. I first met with my father's current supplier. I found out that he had replaced one of the two compressors for the A/C without replacing a 26-year old air handler. I also asked him about the boiler and he was vague as to the issues involved, then Joe appeared. What a change. In 1/2 an hour we determined that a number of valves were completely inoperative on the boiler system and that the two 26-year old air handlers were ineffective and covered in black mold. By 9am the following morning, we had a complete bid from Joe. The work was done after I left DC. Polar Bear was on time, exactly on budget and did the job neatly and quickly. My father has called me a number of times to remark on the dramatically improved performance of the A/C system. Joe also bled all the radiators, bringing heat to the 3rd floor, which had stone-cold radiators prior to his work. I think Polar is great.
Description of Work: Polar Bear replaced two aging air handlers, added a separate heating/cooling unit to an addition, and replaced the boiler and thermostats.

The installers arrived early on a Tuesday morning and were finished with the whole job by 10 a.m. on Wednesday. They were very personable and professional. Removed a 600 pounds old boiler, replaced pipes that needed replacing, removed an old shelf so that the new boiler would fit more easily into the tight space and provided us with more room. They vacuumed up after the job and bled all the radiators before leaving.
Description of Work: Joe Kelly came to our house to provide an estimate to remove a very old boiler from 1939 and install a new boiler. We also decided it was time to replace the water heater. He was very knowledgeable and came up with a estimate for the whole job within 45 minutes at our house. We attempted to get another reputable company to give us an estimate but although they did come the next day they said it would take them several more days to provide the estimate and that they were not sure if the new boiler we would need was in stock. So, it seemed clear they were not as prepared as Polar Bear Inc.

Polar Bear was great! Joe Kelley was very professional and friendly when he came to give us an estimate. He clearly knows his stuff and was not out to sell us more product than we needed. We had received a few other estimates, but decided to go with Polar Bear in part because their price was better, but mostly because they seemed best equipped to get the job done right. They were able to schedule a quick installation and on the day of, a crew showed up early in the morning and proceeded to work straight through the next few hours. We could tell that the crew takes pride in their job, that they want to get things done right and that they work well with Mr. Kelley, who came by toward the end of the installation to ensure all was OK. When there appeared to be a wiring issue, their electrician was out almost immediately to assess and correct the problem. Polar Bear was clean, professional, friendly, and quick.

We had received two estimates for this project before contacting Polar Bear; one came in at $14 K, and the other had ball-parked it to be around $20-25 K, and told me to email him if I was interested in a final estimate. I wasnt and didnt. The $14K guy had told us that his estimate "didnt include the clean-up that we would need to do, what with the dust and all." At that point, I found Polar Bear Air Conditioning on Angies List. Joe Kelly arrived for the appointment right on time, and impressed my husband immediately with his professionalism. He said he would drop by his estimate the next day, and did just that. Then, he called to make sure wed received it and to find out if we had questions. When my husband asked how much dust would be left behind, Joe seemed taken aback and said, "Hopefully, none!" We had such a great experience with this company. Everything was completed neatly and according to schedule. They give contractors a good name!
Description of Work: Installed central AC into our Capitol Hill rowhouse. We have radiator heat, so there were no existing ducts to begin with. The project involved the installation of ductwork, including 8 supply vents and PVC drain lines, as well as conducting electrical work, and hoisting the AC unit on the roof. Ducts were installed in closets, with no exposed ductwork.

They were great. The tech showed up on time, cleaned the furnace, checked the filters, and checked for carbon monoxide in about half the estimated time. On the phone they said it might take more than the usual hour because we hadn't cleaned the furnace in the 3 years we've owned our house, but the tech was done in about 30 minutes. He was impressed with the quality of, and seal on, the furnace that was installed new 3 years ago and said that if we bought a carbon monoxide detector at the hardware store and kept the filters clean we probably wouldn't need to have him back for several years. He also gave us some do it yourself tips for evening out the heat on the different levels of our house in the Winter.

This company was fantastic. They were in and out so quick I didn't even notice that they were here. They were a very respectful company too. The service was exceptional and they did very quality work. They did scratch my floor up a little bit but when I called them to let them know, they were out the very next day to fix it for me with no hassle. I would recommend them to anyone.
