He was right, works fine except when it gets over 100, and even then nothing too bad. Work was done quickly and professionally and at the estimated cost. would recommend them to everyone i know.
Description of Work: Our air conditioner was slowly dying so we had polar bear come out to evaluate what was going on. We have old duct work and I thought i would need to add and extra unit to get the whole house cold. The guy from polar bear spent a lot of time looking at the house and duct work before talking me out of a second unit. He pointed out that while it would improve the efficiency of the ac, we would be unlikely to get our money back if we sold the house. He felt suggested we replace the one unit and see where it got us.

Both units required inspection of the outdoor compressors and the indoor air handlers. Johnny identified and fixed all problems expeditiously -- within about 90 minutes.
Description of Work: Both my heat pump ac and my rental unit heat pump ac went down at the same time after a heat wave. Johnny from Polar Bear fixed both units. Mine had iced up because it was low on freon so he deiced and added the required level of freon. He replaced the capacitator on the rental unit and cleaned the dirty coils.

Upstairs air conditioning was not working, and I left a message first thing Monday morning (6/7) requesting that someone come take a look. They called me back relatively quickly (within a few hours), and I was given a window of 1:30-3:30 when a technician would arrive that afternoon. Technician arrived at 3:30, and took fan motor cover panel off of air conditioning unit. Inspected the thermostat and air conditioning unit for 10 minutes, and came to the conclusion the fan motor needed to be replaced. Since I had recently had the phone motor replaced by another company; he suggested that I call them back; otherwise he estimated the work to be about $1,000. He left, and gave me a bill for $120. I called the other company (Unique Indoor Heating and Cooling), and they came out a few days later to inspect the system. Their technician checked a couple of things then went to the fuse box for the house -- the circuit breaker had been tripped; he flipped the breaker, and the unit immediately came on. The fan was not blowing out a significant amount of cold air though so he replaced the capacitor, and the unit has worked fine since. I called into Polar to complain about the shoddy service/estimate they provided since I basically wasted $120 on a service/estimate that was a waste of time (and had to pay another service estimate fee from another company when they should have diagnosed it correctly the first time) -- seems like a/c repair 101 would have the technician check the circuit breaker. The person I spoke with listened to my story, and apologized, but when she asked what I was looking for beyond an apology, and I replied that a conversation with her manager and a refund would be nice; she said that she would only agree to pass my info along to her manager. I still have not heard anything back from them. The sad thing is I used them for a service visit a year earlier, and I was very happy with their service, but unfortunately for them; I won't use them again, and I will be happy to pass along my thoughts about their poor service.

This is a very responsive company. When you have a problem with heat or a/c, you want someone to come quickly. Every time I call them they're available very quickly, and their staff is courteous and professional. We thought we had a big problem with our boiler but the technician explained that the problem was in the chimney/flu. Easy to fix, and no need for an expensive repair to boiler. We will continue to use Polar Bear.
Description of Work: We used Polar Bear to upgrade our air conditioner two years ago, and recently called them for routine maintenance on the a/c, as well as to check our heater (boiler).

After installation, the air conditioner began to leak and did damage to my upstairs ceiling. Joe promptly sent over painters who sanded down the damaged areas, did not lay down appropriate masking, and proceeded to get paint on my hardwood floors and banister, and leave the repaired areas mostly unpainted-- saying they'd require another layer and that they'd come back. They never did. Now it's 2010. The boiler made it through one winter without any problems. Now in the middle of its second winter, it's causing the whole house to shake when it turns on. I called Polar Bear and they've told me their services are no longer under warranty, and that it'll be $120/hr and $70 for a visit.
Description of Work: I hired Joe Kelly and Polar Bear A/C Heating and Plumbing to install a new air compressor and boiler to my house.

We asked for estimates from 3 companies to replace our old heating and AC system with an new energy efficient system. The Polar Bear sales rep arrived on time and gave us a well-informed estimate. Not only was he knowledgeable about the system, but he was also knowledgeable about the IRS tax laws that gave us the largest tax break for our investment. The price was good. The work was performed based on our time schedule. The work was done in one day. They cleaned up after themselves and were very efficient and friendly. The new system works great. I would definitely use them again. Although we did not negotiate a better price, I get the impression that they will negotiate a better price if you ask them.
Description of Work: Replaced our heat furnace and AC unit to an energy star system, taking advantage of the IRS tax credit.

Polar Bear owner, Joe Kelly gave us the best cost estimate of two reliable contractors we contacted from Angie's List. In fact, the cost with Polar Bear was about 2,000K less than the other contractor, even though the products were the same. The crew came out on time, were very careful and efficient, and had the whole thing up and running within four hours. We live an historic row house with a flat roof and I was concerned about damage to the roofing material, which is new. But we had the roofer out to check the job after the AC went in, and everything was done well and without any damage to the roof. The AC is quiet, efficient, and reliable. I recommend Kelly and his team.
Description of Work: Installed new, split air conditioning unit on roof and in the attic, along with a new, digital thermostat.

They were reasonably priced. I liked their option best of the different companies that came out. They had the best solution for our older home. They did a good job. It took a little longer than they said it would. I had a couple of small issues that came up. They came back and fixed those and didn't charge me.

I was very satisfied with Joe and his team, and cannot recommend this company highly enough. They are responsive, knowledgeable, and give continued good service after the sale.
Description of Work: After having some electrical work done, we discovered the furnace that Polar Bear installed last summer wouldn't turn on. We called very late at night, and got a return call first thing in the morning. A technician came out soon there after, and replaced a blown fuse. Service was prompt, they knew what they were doing, and best of all, there was no charge.

The 'work' performed for me was giving me lots of candid information that was greatly appreciated. While some contractors refuse to give free estimates (for fear of getting to a job site and the work being out of their scope or giving estimates that are used for the purposes of comparison shopping), Joe came out and established that the work was outside of his area of expertise but proceeded to walk through to get a feel for what else needed to be done and gave a lot of professional advice.
Description of Work: Joe came out to give an estimate. Upon getting there, we established that the work was outside of the scope of what he normally performs. He immediately gave me two professional recommendations. We then proceeded to do a walk-through where he gave me tips for evaluating AC systems when the time comes.

It was a positive experience. They took care of it quickly. I guess one thing that points to their professionalism is that they broke my porch light while they were doing the install -- I guess the ladder banged it somehow -- and they immediately ran out and replaced it. They brought several lights from the hardware store for me to choose from and then installed it for no cost. They installed the furnace in one day with no problems, like they said they would. It had no impact on my schedule; I didn't have to be there. It just went really smoothly.

After discovering that my heat was operating only on "emergency", I looked outside at the compressor and noticed that the fan blades were not turning. Being afraid to run our unit only on "emergency heat" I turned the system off completely and called Polar Bear to see if they could come out the same day. They came out that afternoon, determined we needed a new fan motor, and came back the next day to install it. They were friendly, prompt, and efficient, as I had experienced earlier this year with a regular service check.

Called because the blower in the air handler was making making noise and not moving much air. Before calling, I assumed that the blower would have to be replaced. The technician removed all of the air filters (very dirty) and tested the blower - it was fine. He monitored it under varying load conditions for 30 minutes to be certain that it was ok. Excellent service and integrity, could have easily sold me on a new blower motor.

Had I not checked this furnace for 3-6 months, the efficiency of home heat would have been drastically reduced and unfiltered air would have unnecessarily sooted and dusted the furnace motor, reducing its lifespan. My wife called the owner of Polar Bear to express our concerns and to ask that someone come and remedy the problem. Instead of trying to understand and help, the owner began defending the workmanship of the installation, became upset, and was questioning the validity of our complaints. Although the owner agreed to send out the installation mechanic, he acted like he was pissed off that we were even bothering him, and his attitude toward customer service was poor. The mechanic that was responsible for the original installation showed up on Tuesday with a service technician. The first thing is they showed up more than an hour late and offered no apology for their lateness nor did we ever get a call that they would be running late. From the time the mechanic entered my home, it was obvious that he reflected the same pissed off poor attitude of the owner. His original tone, demeanor, and comments to me, much like the owner, was that we were just calling them out for some B.S. However, once the mechanic saw how the furnace had not been properly sealed and attached to the return air duct, he lightened up a little and then made the repair. The mechanic did not remedy a repair to constructing a brace or sleeve for the filter. His solution was a band-aid approach to just jam the filter into the furnace space and left me with a comment that there was really nothing else they could do because of the age of the home and the ductwork. The mechanic never offered an apology for the poor workmanship of the furnace seal, nor did the owner ever call afterwards to see if our complaints were resolved. After the owner was paid, he was basically indifferent to customer service. When Polar Bear gave us their original cost estimate, they never said anything about needing to modify the furnace that would need to be installed; limitations of the equipment or service with the existing home; or of additional costs that would be needed in order to the job "right". I was only told about these limitations after I paid for the system and service. If I had it to do over again, I would not hire this company, nor would I recommend their crummy workmanship and crummy customer service attitude to anyone.
Description of Work: Replaced furnace and gas water heater. I had just purchased my home and prior to moving in, I had Polar Bear install a new furnace and hot water tank after having three different estimates submitted; Polar Bear was not the least expensive of the three. They were late for over an hour for the install and offered no apology to my wife who had rushed to meet them. My wife asked about the new filter after noticing that they had cut the old filter to put into the new furnace, she was told this was not a problem. We moved into the home two weeks after the installation and I decided to check the filter. What I discovered was that the furnace had been modified by cutting open the side panel of the furnace in order to attach it to the return air duct. The furnace filter they had placed in the furnace had fallen over on its side and was lying against the furnace motor because the installer had taken no measures to bracket, brace, or otherwise install the filter properly. This was allowing unfiltered air to enter into the furnace and furnace room and unnecessarily dust and soot the furnace motor. In addition, the side panel of the furnace was not properly attached or sealed to the return air duct, leaving a significant gap between the return air duct and the furnace, resulting in air escaping directly into the furnace room and home before being heated. This, coupled with the filter not being properly installed, was causing a significant reduction in what would be the efficiency and longevity of the furnace.

This is very unprofessional. If a company miscommunicates with a customer, they should rectify the situation. I would not recommend them.
Description of Work: I called Polar to schedule an appointment to service my air handler. They didn't write down my apartment number and mistyped my phone number. I called within the middle of my time window and they said that since they didn't have the right number for me (due to their mistake), the serviceman had already left the area (even though we were only 2 hours into my 4 hour window) and would not come back. When I insisted that they send someone else out because we were still within my time window and I had taken the day off work, they said they could not pull anyone off any of their other existing projects.

WE EMPATHIZE WITH THE CUSTOMER. HOWEVER, WE HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THIS CALL WAS NOT PLACED WITH POLAR BEAR A/C PLUMBING AND HEATING INC. THERE ARE SEVERAL HVAC COMPANIES IN THE DC METRO AREA THAT USE THE TERM ‘POLAR’ AS A PREFIX TO THEIR NAMES. BASED ON A NUMBER OF INCONSISTENCIES BETWEEN THE CUSTOMER’S EXPERIENCE AND OUR STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, WE BELIEVE THAT THIS CUSTOMER MAY HAVE BOOKED THE ABOVE-DESCRIBED SERVICE WITH ANOTHER OPERATOR. BELOW ARE OUR REASONS FOR REACHING THIS CONCLUSION: 1. WE HAVE SEARCHED OUR RECORDS OVER SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE THE DATE OF THIS POST. THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF A CALL THAT WAS BOOKED YET NOT PERFORMED AROUND THIS TIME. 2. THE WINDOW PERIOD FOR THE ARRIVAL OF POLAR BEAR A/C PLUMBING AND HEATING INC’S TECHNICIANS STANDS AT ONLY 2 HOURS. WE CONSIDER THIS ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING WITH POLAR BEAR, SINCE THIS IS MORE CONVENIENT FOR OUR CUSTOMERS’ SCHEDULES THAN THE 4 HOUR WINDOW THAT OUR COMPETITORS PROVIDE. 3. TIME IS IMPORTANT TO US. POLAR BEAR A/C PLUMBING AND HEATING INC STRIVES TO OPERATE WITHIN STATED TIME LIMITS IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO VISIT ALL CUSTOMERS REQUIRING SERVICE ON A PARTICULAR DAY. IF UNEXPECTED THINGS HAPPEN AND OUR CUSTOMERS ARE DELAYED, WE OFFER TO RESCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS, VERY OFTEN FOR OUR 7:30AM SLOT WHICH HAS PROVEN IDEAL FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WORK. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ANOMALY FOR THE TECHNICIAN NOT TO OFFER THIS TIME SLOT TO THE CUSTOMER, PARTICULARLY SINCE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE NATURAL SOLUTION TO THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THE CUSTOMER’S COMMITMENT TO WORK AND HIS/HER PRUDENCE IN MAINTAINING AND REPAIRING SYSTEMS IN THE HOME. AGAIN, WE WISH TO STATE OUR COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL, RELIABLE SERVICE, AND WE DO HOPE TO HAVE THE CUSTOMER BOOK A CALL WITH US IN THE FUTURE. My husband and I contacted three companies to give an estimate on replacing our boiler and our thermostat. Two of the three companies informed us that we did not need to replace the boiler because it was in good working condition (we didn't have a problem in the past, it just was a little beat up during construction last year and we didn't know if it needed replacing or not). The representative from Polar Bear informed us that we only needed to get our boiler vacuumed because he noticed a bit of rust above the flame areas and suggested that we get it vacuumed to ensure efficiency in our heating for this coming winter. This Polar Bear representative was very nice and professional. While he was still in my home, he called his office and scheduled an appointment for the coming Thursday morning at 7:30am. On Thursday, Kyle, the Polar Bear representative showed up just before 7:30am. He was in shabby shorts and a T-shirt. When I opened the main door, he told me he was here to replace my thermostat and check out my boiler. Then when I opened the storm door he darn near knocked me over as he walked past me. I had to stop him to get his name. He proceeded to walk in my dining room looking for the thermostat. He didn't give me the opportunity to show him where it was. He was very unprofessional from the start. After he saw the thermostat, I showed him in the basement where the boiler was located. I informed him before he started working on the boiler that he was to vacuum the boiler. Practically ignoring me, he began checking the boiler. I told him that the first representative checked the boiler and he was only there to vacuum. He completed the check of the boiler and then asked me if I had a vacuum. When I went upstairs to get the boiler, he had the audacity to take a CRAP in my bathroom. He was in there for more than 15 minutes. I had to ask him if he was OK When he finally came out, he went to replace my thermostat. While he was replacing my thermostat, I went down to see what if anything he did to the boiler and noticed there were three screws on my floor from the boiler. When questioned about it, he stated that he needed a different vacuum than the one I had and he couldn't vacuum the boiler because he didn't have his boiler. He would come back once he had the vacuum in about a week to put the screws back on. He then gave me a bill for $355 for the work he did not do. When I asked how much for the thermostat he stated $295 (ridiculous price for installing an $80 thermostat). I only paid for the thermostat and called their office. The lady that answered the office phone informed me that she would have management give me a call and as of today, I still have not heard back from any at Polar Bear.
Description of Work: Polar Bear A/C Plumbing & Heating, Inc. replaced the thermostat in my home. They were suppose to also vacuum the bottom of the boiler, but did not come prepared and were not knowledgeable. The representative that came to perform the work, Kyle, was rude and disgusting (he spent over 15 minutes in my bathroom without asking me in order to take a "Dunk"). He left my basement smelling unbearable!!!

It went really well. I was a little taken a back, since he arrived in plain clothes (no uniform), in an unmarked van, with not even a business card to hand me. However, he performed a great job, even offering to vacuum up his mess (a rare offer, in my book).
Description of Work: We had a leak from our AC unit. Thought it was a broken pump. He performed lots of tests to find out that it was a lack of changing the filter (my fault) that caused the problem, not anything more major than that. He also checked refrigerant levels, which hadn't ever been checked in the 4 years we've been living here.

Kiel was brusque and dismissive from the moment he arrived. He claimed that the plumber that had been by in the previous hour didn't know what he was talking about, and ignored the information I gave him about the leak (which the plumber had cleared up before telling me to call an A/C tech), since he said he didn't see a leak, he couldn't comment on it. He also said that my unit was 7 yrs. old and would probably have to be replaced soon, and that it was clotted with dog hair (I've lived here for 5 1/2 yrs, the previous owners didn't have a dog, and my dog is a shih tzu, so he doesn't shed). He was so unlikeable that based on that alone I wouldn't use this company again.
Description of Work: Cleared trap of clogs, flushed drain. Cleaned coil with coil cleaner.
