Commercial air conditioning installations, replacement, maintenance & repair, thermostats, changeouts & ductwork systems, gas furnaces, boilers.
They are a no nonsense company. They arrive on time and are clean and neat during the appointment. Their pricing are competitive, their prices are not the cheapest and not expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for and more. I am always very impressed with their service and they do a real professional job. They take pride in their work. They are usually here a couple hours and they keep busy to get the job done quickly. I now have them on my speed dial since they are my go to guys.
Description of Work: I have them do the routine maintenance on our AC and furnace system. I have an older boiler system they have to deal with. I have used them for about 4 or 5 years now. They also installed a brand new AC system in the past.

Their prices are reasonable and they show up on time when they say they are going to. We have been using them for about 2 years now. They seem knowledgeable in their field. They don't try to make you buy anything that is expensive, they fix what needs to be fixed and the system is working fine.
Description of Work: They did our fall tune up for our furnace. They also check up on our AC unit in the spring. We have a service contract with them to have them come out twice a year.

We went with Joe Kelly and Polar Bear A/C after their bid came in at a reasonable level, but we also got a 20% February discount for the installation. We thought that his system design -- which is almost entirely on the roof was much more straightforward and less likely to fail than the others that would have been shoehorned into our tiny attic. The ducts were going to be more direct and the unit, should it leak, would not be in our attic. Installation went fine, though the technicians were a bit sloppy with clean up. The system has worked as advertised this summer and we're happy with it. When there was a bit of leaking--which turned out to be from a skylight installation--Joe was there right away and fixed it, even though it wasn't his system that caused it. I'd definitely work with these guys again.

The job went smoothly without issue. The company took the time to explain the reasoning, the cost, and the process. I felt totally comfortable with the service and the products they used. It was a significant cost, but I understood the reasons for the price I was paying. I was very thankful for a job well done and the attitude of customer service that they displayed.

The blower fan for my A/C unit stopped working one night. I was unable to diagnose the problem myself because I have a package A/C unit on the roof and didn't want to scale an extension ladder. The technician came to our house within the time window given and quickly discovered an iced-over condenser. He shared pictures of the problem taken with his iphone. He told me to leave the unit off overnight and he'd return the next day to check it again. Again, he showed up within the time window, diagnosed that the problem was a dirty vent filter (i was getting a kitchen remodel so the filter was clogged with construction dust), and described some A/C best practices (when to change the filter, when to set the fan to "auto" or "on", etc).

1. Considered three vendors. 2. Selected 'Polar Bear" based on (a) equipment selection, (b) price, (c) neighbor's recommendation. (d) personality and credibility of the owner. 3. Installation was performed on date scheduled. Technicians were all knowledgeable, polite, proficient, and they worked well together as a team. All debris (old equipment and boxes for new equipment) were removed.

We contacted the member the day before the service call to let her know that the credit card company was unable to process the charge. We very politely called her back to ask her if she could repeat her credit card information, including the billing address, which was different from her home address. She was immediately defensive and angry and would not repeat any information. She stated "I want to speak to someone who does not have a writing problem, because you don't know how to write." We've made several attempts to contact her, the voice mail states it is full. Our company's policy is to verify credit card information before we do work. As always, our customers can count on an open dialogue with us.

Joe came out promptly to give an estimate, and was very helpful in discussing options. He steered me away from more expensive units that he did not think were necessary for my house, and pointed out minor problems left over from a prior installation that predated my ownership. Polar Bear's estimate was significantly less expensive than the other two bids I received. I signed a contract on Thursday and the installers were there on Monday. They were neat and professional, and completed the job in a little over two days. I identified some minor follow-up issues, and they returned promptly to take care of them. I was extremely pleased with how easy the entire project was, and the total cost. I would definitely use Polar Bear again.

They basically charged us for the visit, nothing was really done, except for the false report. This worker was a real rookie.
Description of Work: Horrible Service, the morning started out badly, they called saying they were outside my house when infact they were in the NE, even though my house is in NW.Our AC unit was not working when we initially called but was when they arrived,we decided to have then check it out anyway. The worker claimed that we needed to replace out unit because it wasn't working even though it was obviously on and running,my husband had to literally step up and place his hand against the vent and ask him to do the same.

It was our belief that this system's 20+ year old inside air handler had a blower motor that was shutting off on thermal overload. The customer wanted us to replace the blower motor, but we could not find a blower motor to match this obsolete, more than 20 year old system. We notified the customer of this situation.

It’s always disheartening to read negative reports about the quality and workmanship of our company because we strive to give all of our customers very high quality work. We did encounter a pesky roof leak at this property. We were responsive on 3 occasions to try to identify and fix where this small amount of water was coming in to a supply vent at the rear of the home. Sometimes very small leaks can be hard to identify, even when you’re standing on a roof, but we were unaware that this customer had any issues after our last visit. We never leave our customers with open ended problems. Actually, this air conditioning installation was completed on January 27, 2004. Our last visit to this property was on August 12, 2005, and we have not heard back from the customer since that date. The “work completed date” of July 11, 2007 stated in his report is inaccurate. It is unclear why this customer would wait 6 ½ years to generate an Angie’s List report concerning this issue.

Came promptly on a weekend when we called, examined system, gave us ideas on how we could improve and add our mainfloor to the the system. Original installer had said it couldn't be done. Came back the next week replaced unit on roof, added ducts, cut new ducts to main floor. Were friendly, neat, and hard workers. Know a lot about the business. Cleaned up after themselves to perfection and completed job in two days. Can't believe how much better the system works.

Dave came on a Sunday to help repair our furnace, which wasn't turning on. It turns out that he doesn't normally work with boiler systems, so he wasn't able to diagnose the exact problem, but he did manage to get the heat to come on. We have a 4-month old baby whom we want to keep warm, so we were very grateful. He didn't charge us anything despite the fact that he came out on a Sunday and did actually help us, even if he couldn't offer a long-term fix.

My neighbor recommended them to me. The system is working wonderfully. I am happy with what they did. I spent $13,950 on the job. It was money that was well spent. They were very efficient at what they did. I liked the way they did it and the timeframe in which they did it. My neighbors were pleased with them as well. They are very competitively priced. I will use them again in the future.

Polar Bear was one of six HVAC companies we received quotes from. Joe responded immediately to our request for a quote, and showed up right on time on the day/time we set. Joe is the owner, and it was reassuring that the company sent the big boss to talk us through these options (although all of the other reputable companies also sent either the owner or someone with years of experience to process our quote). Joe walked us through our options very patiently, answering all of our questions, and was extremely professional and just an all around nice guy. Polar Bear's quote came in the lowest of the six we received, about $1000 less than the next lowest, and that of course was attractive. But what made us convinced that Polar Bear was the right company was the creativity and suggestions that Joe provided to efficiently cool our house, yet reduce the "footprint" that the system had on our beloved high ceilings and relatively untouched bedroom/bathroom walls. All of the other HVAC companies had suggested running ducts down through all of our second floor bedrooms (requiring lots of drywall repair and lost closet space) to reach the first floor, but Joe suggested we consider a larger, single duct/vent down to the middle of the first floor (and hidden in a hallway closet) to primarily cool the first floor. That, plus the natural flow of cool/warm air up and down our stairways and open floor plan, was suggested to be sufficient. Mike and his crew came in, and just like Joe they were extremely professional. They once again talked us through the entire installation process, answered questions, and did an incredible job of cleaning up after themselves. The entire crew was extremely friendly and courteous. Believe it or not, these guys took less than two days to install all of the duct work, drop a huge single A/C unit and two steel beams on top of our roof, hook it up and get everything running. We we're blown away and how fast and efficiently these guys worked. Very impressive. We've only had the system installed for a couple of weeks, but everything looks good so far. Joe was also very open to returning to add additional ducts/registers if our "minimalist" approach doesn't work...but we're confident it will. Overall...Polar Bear was a pleasure to work with...and I'd recommend them highly.
Description of Work: Installation of a high-efficiency central A/C system for our 1500 square feet, 3 bedroom, 100-year old NW DC row house. We have three bedrooms upstairs plus a full bath, with a living room, dining room, and kitchen on the first floor. Our basement is unfinished (to be finished later this year), but talking to all of the HVAC companies (including Polar Bear) it seems that based on the relatively open floor plan of our house (and as long as we keep our stairwells open) that simply cooling the first and second floors will also keep the basement sufficiently cool and dry through cold air's natural downward movement and the system's upward draw of warm air.

Joe responded to my enquiry immediately and was able to come and provide an estimate at short notice. He was polite and incredibly informative, taking the time to walk me through all the details and possible options available to me. He provided me with an estimate on the spot and then followed up with a call a few days later to see whether I had made a decision. I explained that I was getting other estimates and opinions from other contractors and would come back to him and he did not pester me with additional calls. After meeting with other contractors and getting either terrible advice or facing big delays in receiving the actual estimate (one never arrived), we decided to go with Polar Bear. Mike and his team arrived to begin work on Monday. It is now Friday and all the work has been completed. Mike and the team were polite and professional. They were considerate of our 102 year old house and made us feel completely comfortable leaving the house in their hands while we went to work. I would recommend this company very highly and will definitely use them again.. although I hope it won't be for AC repairs :-)

I feel that the service provided by Polar Bear was fairly perfuntory. My AC is working intermittently but I do not believe that my furnace which is only 5 years old needs replacement. I am still trying to troubleshoot the problem. Polar Bear did not do a thorough inspection and they were pricey.
Description of Work: This company performed regular checks and maintenence on my AC unit and Furnace. I called them because my AC went out on the hottest day of the summer. The technician came right out right away and inspected my AC unit. At the time he came out, my AC unit had come back on. He did a cursory inspection in 10 minutes and told me that if the AC went out again, my furnace would have to be replaced at a cost of $2500. I called another company out to get a second opinion. the technician for the other company came out and did a thorough inspection of my unit, checked every aspect of the system and said that the furnace did not need replacing.

Our 2-year-old AC unit mysteriously went out the first few days of June this year. We found Polar Bear in the Capitol Hill community resource book and gave them a call. Initially, they sent over a technician who tried to diagnose the problem and remedy it. He found that there was something wrong with the pressure, so he recharged our coolant. That solution didn't work, so Joe came over and got to work on our system. He was very polite and professional, and always punctual. After several fits and starts, the problem was diagnosed and addressed. Our ductwork was improperly installed, and the AC unit was pumping out more air than the ducts could distribute, creating a pressure issue. As a result, it blew out the (2-year-old) AC unit. They took care to offer us a workable temporary solution until the off-season. Joe cut holes in our duct work as a temporary pressure release, replaced our AC unit, and gave us an estimate to re-do our ductwork that had been incorrectly installed in the first place. It took four trips out and plenty of frustration on everyone's part, but through it all, I was confident that Joe was offering us the best solution for our house. I can't speak to the pricing - with major issues like this, I'm not keen on shopping around for the lowest bid. I just looked for the best service. In terms of professionalism, experience and trustworthiness, I was extremely happy with Polar Bear. It's a lot easier to be positive now that my home is cooled.
Description of Work: temporary pressure release in ductwork, replace AC unit and coil
