Richard and his team have been great to work with. They make my yard look terrific, and Richard always gives helpful advice and is available to answer questions. Last fall they completed a variety of projects (including installing a flagstone walkway, planting a dogwood, general maintenance, transplanting), and are currently working on building a flower bed. I appreciate how Richard has involved me in the selection process for the flower bed, and has kept me updated on general progress. I have highly valued his experience and his vision for my outdoor areas.

It went well for the days work. Then i was going to hire them for more work but they sent us a bill for the same work we had paid for. They claimed we only paid for one ,man to do the job but we owed them for two other men helping out on that day. He said he had explained that to us but we just did not hear that!
Description of Work: They did a great job but then they asked for more money in a recent email because three men came out to do the job. We thought we paid for everything but they told us that angies list did not quote their deal correctly and that we needed to pay them for the extra two men. i will pay it now but not use them again. Too bad because they did a great job! great people too!

It's unfortunate that Angie doesn't post offered as we submit them I explain the terms before we start but sometimes it's not enough I don't understand why Angie wants us to collect a portion of the Deal when we meet members-- it's very confusing for members and creates an atmosphere of suspicion and compromises trust. We lost this member as a long-term client as a result A loss for both parties

I've had great success connecting and establishing long-term relationships with Angie's members, especially new homeowners. Excellently. I highly recommend New Dawn Gardens, whether for regular maintenance, initial layout and planting, or even occasional special requests. Richard has since worked for me several times over the last 3 years. He is an excellent gardener, needs very little direction, understands exactly what is needed and makes it happen. He is very accommodating, helps out with unusual or last minute service requests, and gives good ideas that are reasonable and affordable. He's become one of my regular, go-to-guys for all garden services.
Description of Work: Fall garden cleanup, including trimming, cutting down overgrown vines, cutting back roses and perennials, weeding, relocating plants, planting bulbs, moving heavy terracotta flower pots to protected location. It took his team of 3 gardeners about 24 hours over 3 days.

Our building hired Richard to perform bi-annual planting and/or maintenance of our front area that holds several bushes and flowers. Initial installation and the first year of services (two visits total) were seamless. The building made clear that we were limited on budget and did not authorize services beyond what we had specifically requested. However, our interactions during the second year went downhill. Richard and his associates performed spring maintenance and planted several new flowers. We received our bill for those services and paid it promptly. We subsequently received several additional invoices for "maintenance" that was could not be accounted for and that was never authorized by the building. The invoices quickly almost exceeded the initial amount authorized for spring services (authorized services total ~400, unauthorized/additional services total ~ $380). We contacted Richard who claimed that his team drove by several times and noticed that the plants and flowers were on the point of failure. Everyone in our building quickly disputed his claims. Our building waters the plants regularly and pulls weeds as appropriate. None of the plants had exhibited or were exhibiting signs of failure. The hours billed also didn't make any sense. An hour and a half of "maintenance" for a team of 2/3 people; primarily watering, for our plot approximately 30 square feet in size would likely have resulted in flooding and in our view, is entirely excessive. We disputed the necessity and veracity of the visits being billed, and in turn, disputed the overall amount as well. We ultimately settled on an amount much less than Richard had billed and our building terminated our relationship with Richard and his company. We also recently learned that one of our neighbors had the same experience with Richard and terminated their relationship as well.

We knew we had contacted Richard right at the start of the busy season and then it rained a lot in May so we knew we could not expect the work to start instantly. But, as May crawled into June - we still had not had any work done. They came out one Saturday and rearranged some rocks that we had in place already to form another garden plot. Then nothing happened. Richard did not follow up with us and the only way to get a response from him was call or email him directly - even though he always left us with a promise that he would start work soon. We had him come out again at the end of June to try to prod him into motion. He gave us some markers to mark out where we wanted the patio to do be and we told him that we were going to be on vacation for a week and half and that would be a great time to get some of this work done. He told us they would work on it while we were gone. We came home all excited to see the work done and all we found was that some of the existing rock had been cleared - but little else. At this point we started to question ourselves about what why things weren't happening - were we not clear? Did we not express the timeframe for completion? Again, Richard didn't contact us so we had to phone him again. At this point we expressed our frustration that this had gone on for almost 3+ months very little work had been done. We asked him when he could come and finish the work and he finally agreed to come out again on a Saturday. His crew worked for 8 hours and leveled the ground a put in a patio using a lot of the old stone we had already and adding a few more pieces. (We were later shocked when those few more pieces came to $780 dollars since we had purchased most of the stone for far less than that!) At this point however, we just wanted to see SOMETHING done. When Richard finished - he did not put in the step that he had said he would do because of the decline, instead he just left an empty swath of earth - he told us we could put a planter there if we wanted. He ran out of stone and left another hole and hinted that he would come back and fix that; instead, we never saw him again. We received an extremely high bill from him - it had taken us 4 months to get very little work done and cost us a lot of money and time a negligible return. We wound up having another landscaper come in the following week who did far more than Richard did in 4 months in just one day. We wound up finishing the patio ourselves. To this day we are mystified by what happened; we have had a lot of work done on our house and have good relationships and communication with a lot of the people who work for us. We would have had a lot more work done as our plans included a lot more landscaping than the just the patio (that was just the starting point) but it almost seemed that Richard didn't want the work or that he was inconvenienced by us. I notice that Richard often responds to low-rated comments but we cannot fathom how Richard would respond to this as we gave him every opportunity to fix and resolve the issues we had. I attach photos of before and after - there is not a great deal of change from the before and after, certainly not $6000+.
Description of Work: We contact New Dawn in early April to install a patio in our backyard/garden along with other stonework. We chose Richard out of several landscapers because it seemed as though he could see our 'vision' and wanted to work with us vs. tell us what he thought we should do. He asked us to send him ideas so we provided him with quite a few photos of what kind of work we were looking for as well as a lot of photos (20?) of our area. We were excited about working with Richard and really liked him.

The service was good. It was another expensive endeavor. It is always like there are a lot of charges and stuff that come after the price that we expect to pay. The service was good. I thought the work was well done, but the pricing was very expensive. So, I do not know if we are going to use them again in the future. When I bought the coupon, we did not actually get the service performed for like another month or so because he was out-of-town for a while. They did arrive a little bit late. I probably would not use them again because the price is too high.

Mr. Miller walked around our yard with us and talked about all of our plants and trees. He knew what everything was and explained what he recommended we do. He also gave us tips and advice for caring for them in the future. Mr. Miller and his crew of 2 weeded the garden areas and pruned many plants, bushes and small trees. They cleaned up the mulch areas and applied some new mulch where needed. They hauled away all the clippings and debris even though we expected them to leave it in bags at our house.

Richard and his crew did an excellent job at all tasks. They required more time than was included in the Angie's List coupon but were very transparent about estimating the time (and extra cost) as well as sticking to their estimate. The team was punctual (within a half-hour of the agreed time) on both visits. Richard is very knowledgeable about gardening and landscaping, and applied this knowledge to the work, including an explanation of why handclipping results in superior results to using power tools. His crew was helpful and friendly, and they did a first-class job of cleaning up. Prices for labor, mulch and hauling debris were reasonable, especially with the coupon. We hope to use their services again.

I contacted Richard of New Dawn Gardens when I saw the advertisement on Angie's List to see if he serviced my area of the city. He let me know, that yes, he did service my area. I explained to him that my husband and I purchased a home that we were having renovated and were interested in the consultation and 2 hours of lawn work. After I paid for the service, I contacted Richard via email to set up the consultation. He let me know that since I was "out of the service area", it my be a challenge for him to get to me. We finally met 2 1/2 weeks later, a which point, he walked around my yard and gave some recommendations on what I could do to improve the landscape. I thought I paid for a 90 minute consultation, but Richard only spent approximately 40 minutes discussing my yard. I have approximately 1.66 acres and have some ideas, but really wanted to hear recommendations from a professional. Richard seemed rushed and bored. He also mentioned to me several times that I was out of his service area, even though I asked him, prior to purchasing his service if I was in his service are and he replied yes. After meeting with him, I decided to only allow him to complete the services that he could complete in the two our frame. We agreed that he would weed an area in the front yard, removing dead bushes and trim bushes. I contacted Richard via email to schedule a date to do the service. I emailed him several times but did not get a response for a week. He explained to me that he was extremely busy and would get back to me in another week with a date. We finally set a date, but the night before he was scheduled to do the work, Richard contacted me to let me know that he was having difficulties with some of his employees and would have to cancel, but I was his top priority for the following week. On the morning of Richard's arrival to complete the work, he asked me if he could use the dumpster in my yard to dispense of the weeds and debris from the work that he and his workers were doing. I let him know that the dumpster belonged to my contractor, and he would have to discuss using it with with the contractor. Richard then explained that if he had to clean and dispense the debris himself after he completed the yard work, that I would have to pay an additional cost, for this was not a part of the deal on Angie's List. I let him know that within our conversations and within the Angie's list contract, that nowhere was it stated that there was an extra fee for removal of debris after work is completed. Richard stated that when it said, "a cost for extra materials" that this covered removal of debris. I let him know that extra materials usually consists of things like mulch, plants and soil. My contractor let Richard know that if he used his dumpster for his work, that there would be a fee. Richard's conversation with me and my contractor boarded on downright rudeness, disrespect and unprofessionalism. As we discussed where the debris was to be dumbed and who would pay for it, Richard then announced that he would not be doing the weed work. First he told me that this was not a part of our conversation, and when I reiterated that yes, this was definitely part of the job, he then stated that the weeds were too high. I let him know that when we first had a conversation, the weeds were about a foot high, but since it took him so long to schedule the service, yes they were now higher. Richard then rudely stated that I paid for two hours of work and "that's what I'm going to give you". Not sure why this comment was necessary, since I know what I paid for. Richard and his team worked for two hours, at which time, he asked me to inspect the work. The weeds were removed and some of the bushes were trimmed. I'm really disappointed in the entire process, starting from our initial meeting, to the rude and unprofessional behavior of Richard today. And, as a side note, when Richard left, his two employees who completed the work with him, approached me to let me know that they were embarrassed by Richards actions today. They apologized for his behavior, shook my hand and stated that they just wanted to let me know how they felt about the entire exchange. Richard don't penalize your employees for speaking to me. They are very respectful gentlemen and just wanted to correct your wrong.

Response from New Dawn Gardens
This a perfect example of the unbalanced power of the Member/consumer of the Angie's Deal system. When this Member contacted me I understood her desperate need to deal with a Short Sale property which had been abandoned for some time. We discussed options and she was only interested in basic services. Beyond the run-down quality of the landscape, I advised her on several points of concern regarding faulty work with drainage and other construction issues. She seemed to appreciate the input. Regarding the services we provide, I feel it's more important to insure quality than just 'blow and go' so I did have to reschedule due to management issues, which I explained at the time. The time period in question was extremely wet and most people understand how that impact landscape services and scheduling. Regarding the cost of services/materials: It's clearly stated in the Deal contract that ANY materials are an extra charge. A reasonable person understands that what isn't labor is materials. NOT in this case. I have since forwarded a copy of the contract to this Member highlighting the Fine Print section stating the charge for any materials; to date, no response. Regarding punctuality, Member was late for both initial meeting and service date. In any business, time is money. This situation has actually been a blessing and lesson: when dealing with Members, assume NOTHING. My patience was over-tested and I responded poorly to the Member's inflexibility, in the face of the Contract's Fine Print. Henceforth, I pledge to keep ALL details in writing for the sake of clarity. All services were performed to professional standards and Member got more than the Deal required I'm thankful for the Member's review as an opportunity to correct the record. I can only hope Angie will create a system where we service providers can review Members. The current system is unbalanced. In case Members don't know, Member reviews affect service providers grade and standing-- ONE negative review (sometimes from a Member we have never had contact with) negatively impacts our grade and standing. Angie reserves the right to alter my response; I hope I have the opportunity to review any changes. On whole this arrange has benefitted my business but needs constant monitoring.

I like Richard, I think he does a good job for yard work clean up and maintenance. I was not happy with the design services. I had previously had design work done by another provider and it was all sort of a computer scheme design that said exactly where all of these things went. You know like here is this plant and here is the little core and we can choose this plant or this plant would be in this area and Richard came over and dropped a bunch of plants for me to choose from and didn't like give me an idea of where they should go or any kind of coherent scheme or any kind of reason why. We eventually got things planted and it looks okay, but I just wanted it done for me and it wasn't. I like him and I'm still using him for my yard but the design part of it was disappointing.

My approach to the design process, developed over 30 years in the industry, is to involve the client as much as possible; especially when they have NO idea what they want or anything about plants. Education is an important aspect of the design process and the designer/client relationship. This client's garden was design/installed ahead of our appearance and reflected a lack of this involvement: plants were not properly arranged for growth or cohesion. We make every effort to simplify the selection/arrangement process by using the 'palette and menu' approach: I present an assortment of plants, based on the client's color/taste preference and we select and arrange the planting together-- this does require some degree of involvement on the client's part, but avoids the need to rearrange plants afterwards, since everyone has participated in the decision-making process. Nothing is perfect, but I have found that following this process, at least there is an opportunity for involvement, education and 'ownership' which will hopefully spark an interest in the created landscape space. The fact that this client has retained our services and we are currently embarking on another segment of design/install speaks for itself. As to the computer design model-- most people can't read a plan, lack a deep understanding of the plants listed and computers don't take site conditions into consideration (this case in point), I feel the mechanical approach compensates for the designers lack of contact with real conditions on site.
