No work was performed.. the provider can't provide an estimate for service for 5 to 6 weeks, however he was very prompt in returning my phone call.
Description of Work: There was no service provided. I contacted the service provider for an estimate on my roof, he could not provide an estimate for 5 to 6 weeks. I feel for new customers seeking immediate work at this time this provider would be a waste of time.

This is the second time I have asked Robert Martin and National Roofing to fix my roof. The second time was for a different portion of the roof and the job went just as well as the first. Robert and his team provided exceptional service from beginning to end. Although it cost a bit more than what I was anticipating, it was well worth it as I know my roof is good for years to come. I highly, highly recommend Robert Martin and National Roofing.

I was very pleased with National Roofing and would definitely use them again. I interviewed 2 other contractors to get quotes and went with National Roofing based on a gut feeling. I had just bought a 1927 house and the roof was leaking. One of the contractors said I only needed to replace a skylight near where the leak was showing. (This was the same contractor that had "fixed" the leaky roof under the previous owner a few years back... so I wasn't too convinced with his argument. I didn't want a band-aid approach to the problem -- I wanted to fix it!). The second contractor told me to replace the roof. National Roofing told me to replace the roof AND all of the skylights. They said that while the leak may be showing in one place, there's no way to tell where the source of the leak was due to the roof's slight slope (the leak was at the bottom of the slope). They said the roof was so old and had been patched up so many times that it was in my best interests to replace it completely, along with all the skylights. While National Roofing's quote was the highest (because it involved replacing the roof and all skylights), I decided to go with them because it seemed like they knew what they were talking about. They showed me pictures of my roof and explained what they expected was the problem. They also said that if they found any rotten wood in the decking once they removed the roof, they would replace it. Turns out... my roof had FIVE layers of roofing, including the original metal roof from 1927. No one had ever bothered to replace the roof and had instead just patched it up whenever there was a problem. They removed the original metal roof, a gravel and tar roof, and three rubber roofs. They replaced rotten wood in the deck and actually had to go out and buy more because there was more damage than they expected. Additionally, while they were replacing my roof, they found that my gutter was not properly installed and offered to reinstall it correctly (for a fee, but it wasn't bad... I'd rather have everything working well!). The team was very professional and took photos along the way so I could see the work they had done. I was extremely impressed by them. It was a costly fix ($14,000), but I feel so much better knowing that I have a good roof over my head. They were very professional, very friendly, and were obviously skilled in the trade. I would definitely recommend them. Not to mention they were extremely prompt in responding to my initial inquiry and subsequent follow-ups! Plus they took 5-10% ( I can't remember which, though I think it was 10) off the price when I said I got their name from Angie's List.

I am very happy with the work done by National Roofing, which I can already see is very good quality work compared to what previous roofers had done on my house over the past 30 years. Robert Martin, who operates National Roofing, returned calls promptly and kept me up-to-date almost every day on how the project was going by phone and in person. He explained in detail how the work would be done at each point, from the estimate/contract stage through completion. His crews were professional and cleaned up the area every day before leaving the site. The roof and parapet wall look amazing. This was an expensive project, but well worth it for the quality of the work done. I recommend National Roofing.
Description of Work: National Roofing removed & replaced my leaky flat roof with a slightly pitched roof, including new skylights, new gutters & guards, and new roof hatch (cost = about $20K). They also replaced a deteriorating brick parapet wall across the front of the roof (cost = about $31K). Altogether, the work took about 5-6 days to complete, with crews working all day.

During the process of finding a roofer, we sought estimates from 4 roofing companies. One company did an inspection of our roof, but never returned an estimate. The company that gave us the lowest estimate never inspected the roof. The company that had the highest estimate also had their own financing plan that looked like a scam to us. In contrast Robert of National Roofing did a full inspection of our roof, and he then spent more than an hour with us, giving us advice and answering all of our questions. Robert is quiet and serious, and he quickly established a level of trust with us. When we had additional questions, Robert met with us again. He also always quickly responded to our telephone questions. When we finally decided to go with National Roofing, Robert was able to start the job quickly, and finish on time. During the course of installing the two new skylights, two unanticipated problems emerged. Robert was able to deftly deal with these, and he kept us fully informed every step of the way. At the end of the job, Robert provided us photos documenting everything he had done. We would highly recommend National Roofing to anyone in the DC area.
Description of Work: We had our roof completely replaced. The old roof was stripped back to the bare studs. A thick insulation board was installed. A waterproof fiberglass cover was laid over the insulation. This was then covered with white modified bitumen. In addition, two skylights were repaired, and two new skylights were installed.

They were very professional. Responded right away and gave a detailed account of the problem. Before and after pictures were taken. The price was very reasonable especially compared to other roofers. They let us know the cost prior to working on the project and gave a discount to Angie's list customers. They are listed in my cell phone just in case we need any work done in the future. We have a very old slate roof, but you can see the valley they worked on and it looks great.
Description of Work: I actually used them twice. I bought a house with roof damage that was repaired ($3000) and then after the snow I had some damaged slates that had to be repaired with some other work ($1500).

Firstly, the quotes/estimates process: I obtained 3 quotes. One from National Roofing for $4000. A second quote for $3700 from another family-owned roofing company that does a lot of work in Capitol Hill, DC (and which I also very much liked). National Roofing's quote was very similar to the second quote, with nearly all of the same items of work identified. Both National Roofing's quote and the second quote expected that, with their suggested repairs, my roof had somewhere between another 5-9 years left in it. However, National Roofing identified one or two small additional items and its quote was around $300 more - but I didn't mind the small price differential because I appreciated National Roofing's attention to detail and Robert's ability to explain all the work. I note that I also obtained a 3rd quote from a large roofing company that also does a lot of work in Capitol Hill and puts their sign everywhere. The third quote - the one from the large company - was for $25000 from a senior roofer of the company who persisted (in a fairly standover/scare tactic kind of way) to only state that the house absolutely needed a whole new roof. I have since learned that the guy from the 3rd quote company says the same thing to most potential customers?. Robert from National Roofing was extremely responsive and punctual for the appointment for providing the quote. I appreciated Robert's candor, salt-of-the-earth and straight-forward approach and I appreciate that he envisaged what he would do to our house if it were his roof. In other words, I found him trustworthy and believable and he did not seem to suggest repairs simply to make more money out of us. We agreed upon a schedule for the work. Robert's team put in a full day from early morning to evening - they worked really hard in order to finish the job. The team was able to complete the work as agreed and for the amount quoted. It is now one year later, and the roof has held through a snowy winter and fairly wet spring/summer. I guess only time will tell if the roof makes it for another 8 years - but in the meantime, I am very glad to have discovered National Roofing and I will use Robert for future repairs/work on the roof. Having spent the last year dealing with all kinds of tradesmen in DC, I have to say that Robert is definitely one of the best two tradesmen I have worked with. His decency and professionalism were refreshing.
Description of Work: Robert (from National Roofing) and his team repaired parts of my roof and put a membrane layer over the top. It is 110 year old townhouse with approximately 3 or 4 layers of roofing put on over the last few years. It is a flat roof (with some pitch, of course).

Mr. Martin and his Team were excellent; professional, punctual, and informative. I received a real education on roofing in Washington DC homes, the basis of their construction, and the various options (cost effective and efficient) available to me. Mr. Martin called in advance to confirm time and location; he arrived as promised and was pleasant and professional. He explained, in detail, how the process would work and conducted a complete evaluation and estimate. He further explained how I could achieve my objectives - clearing the home inspector's list of "to dos" in the most cost-effective and timely manner. When his team arrived, they were similarly professional and focused. All in all, I was wholly impressed and satisfied. I would, in the strongest terms, recommend National to anyone in the Washington DC Metro area seeking roofing services.
Description of Work: The Provider responded to my request for repair and remediation services on my and my wife's home. We are in the process of moving and needed to respond to concerns identified by the Buyer's Home Inspectors. National Roofing (Robert Martin and his Team) addressed all items on our Check-Off list, including sealing gaps, securing loose flashing, and conducting an overall repair of various roofing issues.

Robert arrived on time for the estimate, was very professional and worked within my landlords budget without compromising workmanship or quality. He was also competitive and agreed to a price below two competitors. The job was complete as scheduled and Robert was kind enough to have a pile of yard waste removed that I'd asked him to take away if possible. The repairs done are proving to be quality - we have had a couple record rain falls since the job was complete and no leaks! National Roofing has good great reviews for good reason. I would highly recommend National Roofing and would call on them again. Sincere thanks for a job well done at a price that could not be beat.

I was very pleased with my experience with Robert at National Roofing. I contacted National a year-and-a-half after moving into our Capitol Hill townhouse. When the house was inspected prior to purchase, the inspector noted that work would soon need to be done - possibly a new roof. Rather than wait until any leaks or other issues, I contacted a few local roofing companies to assess the state of the roof. When Robert arrived, we both climbed up to the roof and he very clearly and with great detail noted what should be done (not a new roof - even though I noted to him that I thought it was a possibility). He explained everything and provided a likely timeline for the future of our roof if this work was to be performed. I had questions and he answered them very clearly. After climbing down from the roof, he went to his truck and wrote up a detailed and very reasonably priced estimate. The day the work was performed the crew arrived on time and cleaned up the site completely. After the work was performed, Robert emailed pictures of the completed work where I could clearly see the quality attention that went into every element noted on the estimate. There was one very minor issue with a gutter that required a follow-up, In truth, this issue may have been outside of the agreed scope of the work. Nevertheless, National foreman - Edwin - came by and addressed the issue with no questions asked. Everything turned out great. I will definitely use National Roofing again - which likely based on the evidence of their work, will not be for a long while.
Description of Work: Coated entire main roof and rear porch roof with asphalt aluminum coating. Built new roof hatch, installed Firestone app smooth modified bitumen to all edges, vent pipe, chimney flashing, and hatch lid. Scraped all loose coating from porch roof. Tightened gutters and hangers. Sealed/repaired all necessary areas on rear porch and main roof including rear chimney flashing and front flashing. Removed antenna and satellite dish and hauled away debris.

My house had two leaks in the roof, needed a new gutter on the back of the house, needed work on the cornice gutters on the front of the house, and needed a resurfacing of the flat part of the roof. Lastly, the house needed a lot of slate work done - the last owner apparently had some missing tiles or they were damaged and had decided to put asphalt shingles over the parts he must have thought were leaking, so I started out with shingles glued to slate. Robert with National Roofing sent his estimator over and took a look at everything and photographed it to take it back to the company for an estimate. He was friendly and professional and they got back to me promptly with the estimate. The estimate itself was detailed and Robert explained each entry on the estimate to me and its relevance. I also had several other roofers provide estimates and Robert's was the most reasonable and included everything we needed to complete. Another highly rated company here on Angie's list recommended a new roof for $20,000 and justified as a way to "guarantee the new roof". Understandable, but I know I didn't need a new roof...and so did Robert. Having earned my trust, we decided to go with National Roofing. His crew was polite, although I must admit I didn't have a whole lot of interaction with them, which I didn't mind. They completed the work quickly and ahead of schedule. They cleaned up after themselves and took pictures of everything they did. Robert followed up with me by email and sent me all of the pictures for my review. All looked good! There was one issue where a small part of the gutter wasn't quite sealed and Robert sent some of his crew back out and the issue was fixed within 24 hours of notifying him. They did great work and stand by it. Robert was also very available by phone or by email and his turnaround time on communication was never more than a few hours. All in all, I'll be calling National Roofing again for any roofing issues I may ever have in the future and I'll be recommending them to all who ask about roofing needs.

He was able to inspect my home the same day as my request. I was expecting to hear that I needed a new roof, instead, Mr. Martin recommended a more modest approach focusing on specific areas that needed to be fixed. He explained things very well. The quoted price seemed a bit high for limited repairs, but it was consistent with the price quoted by another reputable roofer. I was thoroughly impressed by the professionalism, communication, and punctuality of Mr. Martin and his crew. It's too soon to fully judge the results, but I have a lot of confidence in the completed repairs. Before/in-progress/after photos were provided to document the repair efforts. I highly recommend National Roofing.

The owner Robert Martin was responsive and provided a fair estimate. We have a 100-year old home with a flat roof, mansard facade, and built-in gutters/box gutters. We needed some roof repairs and maintenance performed. Robert came out and inspected the entire roof and provided a comprehensive estimate at around $4700. He provided his estimate within 2 hours of completing the inspection. We chose to take the project in phases with the first part being completed at a cost of $2405. The work was completed within a few hours exactly as planned. Robert's team did a great job and the leaks have stopped. I anticipate Robert's team will complete the other maintenance items in the spring.
Description of Work: National repaired the box gutter (built-in gutter), gutter drain, and front porch flashing. This included removing membrane from the front portion of the box gutter and front porch roof flashing. Prime areas with asphalt primer. Install new Firestone APP-170 smooth modified bitumen roofing to areas needed on front portion of the box gutter and to entire front porch roof flashing wall. Robert Martin, the owner, was very professional, knowledgeable, honest, friendly, straightforward and fair. He showed up promptly to provide an estimate, looked at the damage inside, went on the roof and took photos of all problem areas he saw---some where the problem was already manifesting itself to me, and other areas where problems would develop in the future. He talked to me without gimmicks, clearly explaining the issues he saw, the costs, what things were more cosmetic and what thing were necessary. He arranged for his crew to come in within a day or 2 of my call to set up the service. The job was completed promptly, and the crew cleaned everything up. Photos were taken to show me how the completed work looked. (And it looked great!) I would highly recommend National Roofing!

National Roofing was a pleasure to work with. As a third-generation roofer, Robert Martin is very committed to his trade and to producing an excellent finished work product. He truly cares about what he does and it shows - he provided us with photos and a very thorough, step-by-step analysis of the work that needed to be done. His pricing was also more reasonable than the other companies we looked into using. We met with Robert three times: for the estimate, the work itself, then he stopped by afterwards to let us know how everything had gone. He even took the time to follow up with us a few weeks later to confirm we hadn't had any additional problems and that we were happy with the work. Robert was incredibly responsive, friendly, professional and on time for everything, which are tough qualities to find!

They arrived on time and were very nice. My biggest complaint is what they tried to sell. I had quotes from a few other roofers (one of which we ended up selecting) that offered a lot more product for a lower price. National offered to basically just remove the tar from our roof and put new rubber atop the existing boards, saying that everything was in great shape. The interesting thing, though, is other roofers told us it all had to go and be replaced, since it was old and had some leaks. Where National dropped the ball, though, is they verbally quoted me a significantly higher price to just build atop the existing roof, than companies who quoted me to remove and redo the entire roof. So my options were less money and entirely new roof, or more money and only partially new roof. It was a no brainer. They also really disappointed in the actual quote. I was told they were going to write up and send me an actual estimate, as I requested, but never received it or heard from them again. I'm sure they do good work, but for the cost and poor communication, they won't be getting calls in the future from me.

Response from National Roofing
We would first like to say that we apologize for any miscommunication that took place during the estimate. However I think this member could possibly getting some of the said facts about us, confused with another roofer. This member was not told at anytime that we would be giving him or emailing him a written estimate. The homeowner was still undecided as to which direction they were going to take, whether they were going to try and repair or replace. We were told that the new roof was not even something that they were considering. At which time this member was told that a band-aide is not something that we would recommend considering the condition of the roof. We make it a practice to always give written estimates, unless the homeowner is not interested in one or they are undecided as to which direction that they think their going to go when given multiple options. This member was also told that, if at anytime he was to have questions or needed any further information or even wanted to compare quotes from other estimates , if he was to get any , that all he had to do was let us know and that we would help with any further needs. We even stated that even if this member was not going with our company that we would still be willing to answer any questions regarding other companies , to which this member thanked us . As for the difference in pricing and scope of work , I cannot comment on the price he received from the other roofer because I don't know exactly what the other roofing was doing as far as work or which materials were being used . I can tell you that the difference in price was very minor . After the discount for Angie's list members this homeowner would have been at roughly 8,100 for us to install the new roof and he paid 8,000 . So your talking about a $100 difference . As for our pricing , we are not the cheapest roofers in town . Having said that , I would be willing to put our estimates up against any other roofing company in D.C. , that is performing the same exact scope of work , using the same materials and performing the same quality of work . When all things are equal we can compete with any other roofers . As all our reviews show , receiving a bad review is an oddity for us and we don't take it lightly . We do everything in our power to keep customers happy and take responsibility for our mistakes , perhaps the mistake here was to not give this member the written estimate in spite of being uninterested in one. I don't know how we received the lower grades across the board , from this member . We went above and beyond to try and be of assistance , even offering our time to assist him with any questions regarding hiring another contractor , if he was to go that direction . We obviously think that the grades are a bit harsh . We was not even given an A for punctuality after arriving on time . It seems that we didn't have much of a chance here . I would refer all other Angie's list members to read all of our other reviews and see if this review is consistent with our reputation .

Robert was fantastic to work with at National Roofing. He was able to finish the project in a short timeframe and did a great job. When I asked him to double check something that may need to be touched up, he didn't hesitate and made sure it was done. He was quick to respond to my calls and text messages. When there was debris from the roof that fell on to my neighbors, his men went and cleaned it up and even bought a new grill cover since there was some dry tar that got on it. Would definitely recommend them.

Despite my home inspection which said the roof was fine, I in fact had some issues that could have been contributing to water issues I was having on the interior of my home. After noticing paint bubbling on the interior of my home after the heavy July rain, I started calling roofing companies to inspect the gutters and roof. Even if these cracks and holes in the roof valleys weren?t the cause of the paint bubbling, they at some point would likely be an issue for me. I called National Roofing after several other estimates and ultimately chose them to perform repairs. I chose National Roofing because: 1. My call was returned promptly, 2. Robert scheduled a time that was convenient for me and showed promptly when he said he would; 3. Alec spent a fair amount of time inspecting, reviewing and answering my questions---this gave me the opportunity to research his recommendations and scope of work; 4) lastly their price was competitive. In summary it was my confidence in their professionalism and thorough recommendation of scope of work and owner involvement in the process including being on site during the work actually being performed that convinced me they were who I needed to choose. After weeding through companies who showed without ladders to providing estimates that did not address the scope of work, I feel confident I made the proper choice having Robert and his team perform my roof repairs. Highly recommend...

I travel often and am rarely home. Robert Martin was one of 3 roofers contacted and 2 to provide a same day estimate. His analysis was most insightful, in particular when he noted several modest drainage problems that others tried to resolve with more expensive roof repairs. House was built in 1888 and he provided two options, a full roof replacement or more modest repair, and he openly said he felt confident the less costly repair was sufficient to resolve the problem. Robert worked with my schedule and actually gave a small price break for me accepting the work just a few days out that helped to fill his team's work schedule. Once the work started they identified the crumbling and porous brick mortar and, after getting my approval, that problem was resolved the same day. The poorly tilted roof-top AC unit was also an additional problem they identified once the work began and they corrected that problem free of charge. I was away the entire time and Robert both kept me informed and emailed a dozen photos when the work was completed. While total price felt a little high, Robert's professionalism, responsiveness, commitment to quality, and accommodation of my schedule can't be priced.
Description of Work: To correct leakage on top roof, applied smooth bitumen coating to entire roof, sealed a collection of ducts, vents, stacks, pipes and skylights, cemented section of brick wall that they later identified as porous and leaking, repositioned tilted AC unit to eliminate improper drainage problem that they also identified. On 2nd floor roof, primed and installed white granular bitumen roofing and corrected downspout drainage and leakage problem.

I interviewed many roofers before settling on National Roofing. Robert, the owner, is a very knowledgeable and patient man. I respect his personal hands on approach. Several roofing companies I met with sent representatives who gave the impression that they didn't care whether they got my business or not. Other roofing companies also were non specific about what needed to be done as it related to my concerns. Robert LISTENED! Then he explained to me in great detail what he thought the problems were by showing me the photos he took of my roof. Robert was PATIENT. I forgot to tell him something and he went back to my house and looked at the roof a second time. After the job was completed Robert provided me with photos of the finished job. He also noted a few other things that were not in the contract, which he did for no charge. He is a fair and honest businessman and I would certainly use his company again. If you want a no hassle roofing experience this is your guy!

My wife and I chose to go with another company, but this has nothing to do with National Roofing. A neighbor used another company we were considering and their recommendation tipped the scales. That being said, I will certainly contact National Roofing in the future. Their estimate was thorough and professional. National Roofing spent time inspecting every inch of my roof. Any items deemed problematic were pointed out to me and National Roofing spent time explaining why they felt it was a problem. Their proposed solution was described in detail as well. I never felt that the estimator was attempting to upsell me. The estimate was one of the most detailed I've seen. The scope of work was described in detail and the labor and material costs were broken down. Other plus items: quick reply to my initial contact, willingness to work with a busy schedule, and showing up at the scheduled time. The gentleman's general attitude was great- I really felt valued as a prospective customer and I wasn't rushed into making a decision.
Description of Work: Checked roof for the source of a water leak and provided an estimate.

We had some water damage in our master bedroom indicating that we had a roof leak. After reviewing and getting estimates from several roofing companies on Angie's List I called Robert at National Roofing. He was able to fit us in for an estimate the following morning at 8. The next morning, after inspecting the roof, Robert patiently explained the issue (as well as several others) using the photos he took on his phone. He emailed me later that morning and said they had finished up another job and could fit our roof in the next day. The following day they made off of the repairs. Robert kept me updated throughout the day with emails and photos. There were two areas National Roofing fixed free of charge that they identified after beginning work. Robert stopped by the following morning for one last check-up and to receive payment. He ensured me that if there were any issues to give him another call. I would definitely use this Provider again in the future. They were prompt, respectful, professional, and knowledgable about their work.

Let me start by saying that I could not have asked them to be more responsive. Alex spent a good deal of time going over the options with me and what he thought could and should be done. They came to do the work on a Saturday because I travel regularly for work and have not been able to be home during the week. I would say that I know I could have had someone do the work for a little less money, but I am happy that I paid the price I did as I now have confidence that my roof is in good order and I can move on to other projects. I will certainly be recommending them to my friends in the area.
Description of Work: General maintaince work including patching some spots on the flat portion of my roof and replacing some slates on the pitched portion. Also re-sealed around the chimney and coats the whole roof.

I was extremely pleased with the entire experience. Even though our roof is less then 2-3 years old, it became apparent that the original materials and processes used were inappropriate and poorly executed. The thin coping was tearing off the roof and we were getting multiple water stains/leaks throughout the house. When Robert came out for the initial inspection he was able to quickly grasp the (most likely) sources of our issues. He clearly communicated the defects he was seeing and was happy to answer any questions I had. After a slight email mixup, I received his estimate which was inline with our conversations from his site visit. Several weeks later we informed him that we were ready to proceed with the work. After supplying a deposit, we were scheduled for our work to be performed within a week. The day before the work was to be started, a representative from the work crew came out to inspect the site one last time as well as determine if someone would be needed to provide building access. After a final look at the roof he offered a few helpful suggestions as well excellent insight as to the source of a new water stain. After asking for an estimate to take care of this new issue I received a revised estimate the same day. Additionally I talked to Robert that evening over the phone where we once again verified the work to be done and he answered some new questions I had. I got home from work the next day and the work had been completed, old coping hauled away, and the job site cleaned up. The next morning Robert and Alex showed up to review the work with me. The difference in the quality of their work and the original builder was immediately apparent. While the old roofing nails had easily pulled away allowing the coping to deteriorate (and allow water in), the new heavy duty coping was securely fastened to the parapet walls. New roof vents were installed, new rubber was applied, and a number of small issues were found and fixed with no changes to the budget. I cant say enough as to how professional and communicative everyone was. I would immediately recommend National Roofing to anyone I know that needs a roofing contractor.
Description of Work: Replaced coping on parapet walls. Replaced roof vents with more appropriate replacements. Multiple spot repair and application of new rubber to cracks around sunroofs, existing vents, etc.
