Landis Architects I Builders

This is the second time we used Landis for the house remodeling. The first one was kitchen back in 2015. This time around, it was a bigger project, adding a new room on the third floor of our town house. We could not be happier for everything they have done. The house remodeling is stressful. Not everything goes perfectly. In that sense, one gets frustrated, but that’s the nature of the house remodeling. They are first and foremost very professional. They try to keep the schedule and budget. They think for us, instead of just getting a job done quick. Stated differently, we trust them, which probably the most important element of picking a general contractor.

We did a major design/build project with Landis on a historic home where we gutted and updated the existing interior and then added a large addition. They were simply amazing to work with. Super organized, trustworthy, on-time, high quality and the finished product is perfection. Many of our neighbors complimented us on such a courteous and efficient team during the renovation process -- when do you hear of that?? There were often up to 20 tradespeople working at the same time to get a long job done in exactly the time they said it would. Highly recommend Landis for large and complex projects.

Landis Architects/Builders is a first rate, first quality, customer-oriented business. During the design process they listen and they (Chris and Jon) pretty much got everything right in their first design presentation. And unlike some designers I have dealt with, they didn't just listen politely to our comments but actively researched our ideas and discovered design elements that met our wants. I was really impressed with how they worked with Ethan to bring everything within our budget such as our desired bathroom sink and other bathroom fixtures. It was a pleasure to see our foreman Steve every morning. He took time to let me know what was to be accomplished during the day and was extremely able in leading his crew. His craftsmanship and problem solving is top notch. I wish I could remember the plumber's name, as well as the electrician, but they were all highly personable and competent. I've had maids that did not clean up as well as they did every evening.Without reservation I have to give Landis the highest recommendation. It was a job well done.

Scheduled a consultation appointment for a meeting to discuss plans/design for remodel of new home prior to purchase. Arranged a time, exchanged numbers with the architect, and he was a complete no-show. No response to either texts or VM re: whereabouts or to let me know he was running late. I heard from him only after I called Landis' receptionist to file a complaint re: his tardiness and lack of communication. Considering the value of the remodel is in the ballpark of $200k+, it was not a good first impression and, given the number of other quality contractors for home remodeling in DC, I am just taking my business elsewhere.

Landis sent us a direct mailer so we researched their reviews on Angie's, looked at their website and gave them a call for an initial consultation. After my follow up to the company, Paul Gaiser called and set up the meeting. Paul arrived on time and was very nice. He listened to our thoughts and gave some preliminary ideas. The next step was to go to their office to see a more detailed proposal but personal events have intervened so we had to hold off on this step for a bit. We look forward to speaking with them again and will update our review at that time.

Not only were we delighted with our projects when they were done, but we had no hassle and quality support of the original work for even beyond what some would consider to be the typical warranty period. They obviously take pride in their work and it shows in our home.

We were very pleased with the process and professionalism of Landis, and particularly with the final product. Andrew Kerr, the project manager and Ken Gillette, the master carpenter both worked with me closely to make sure everything was proceeding the way in which I wanted. I was very impressed with their skill and occupational talent, and Ethan Landis made sure that everything was as it needed to be at the end of the job. To this day, he still comes by to make sure things are still working well.

Landis went above and beyond in their completion of all the work stated above. Joe Caw and Ethan Landis were excellent in their ability to get the job done smoothly, professionally, and with a focus on quality.

Longer and more expensive than I wished, but worth the time and money. I am totally satisfied with the professionalism and quality of the work provided--from design (to include fixtures and finishes), straight thru to roofers, carpentry, electricians and plumbers.

Hard to believe it's the same house - Paul was a joy to work with from start to finish-

From our initial discussions, Paul understood that light and open space were a priority, and his design was perfect. We loved the two peaked roof design that he incorporated into the new addition section. From outside, it made the addition look unique. On the inside, the higher ceiling in this area made the whole room feel larger and created interesting spaces for two fans and shelving. Paul was able to give us plenty of cabinet space and also two large windows to let in the light we craved. The project took about three months, and we were surprised at how easy it was to live in the house as it progressed. The project was within budget and could not have gone more smoothly. We definitely recommend working with Paul Gaiser and his company. It was a fantastic experience.

Professional work from start to finish. Although expensive, Landis was very accurate about costs and never tried to up-sell or push me to expensive frills.

the contractor and note taker were nice and on time. no complaints with them. i complained to the company that the "note taker" that was pushed on me provided no value to me. they agreed to refund half my expenses.

I have worked with Landis on a previous project -- building a screened porch -- and found them to be punctual, tidy and thorough. This time was no different. Their bid came in below the others; they promised to get me back into my home before the holidays, and they did. They were speedy and efficient, even fixing other contractors' mistakes. They worked on weekends and holidays, and they didn't miss a beat even when I changed my mind on details. They also anticipated problems, repairing cracked molding, upgrading electrical wiring to meet code, and generally improving everything they encountered.

Landis Construction was excellent to work with. They are on top of every detail and the entire staff is responsive, listens to what you want, and makes every effort to make it happen. The quality of the work was excellent and we are very happy with the result. The project took about 7 weeks -- longer than we would like, but I am not sure how they could have sped it up. Great people! Great company.

These guys were total professionals - we used them for design and build, and they excelled at both. My next door neighbors are architects and they commented to us about what a good job Landis did. They were responsive to our needs and budget in the planning process (dont be afraid to push back if you have a different idea - they will listen); they did great work during construction, hitting their mark despite doing construction through the 2010-2011 snowmaggedon events. They did high quality, timely work, and I'd use them again in a second. Not the cheapest option, but in this case we absolutely got what we paid for..

They did a great job...very professional and I am very pleased with the results.

However, Landis never returned my request or an estimate. This happened previously for a different job. I hear their work quality and price are supposed to be reasonable, but twice not having them call me back is inexcusable.

We contacted Landis Construction to request an estimate for a remodel of our upstairs bathroom on Capitol Hill. On February 20, 2013, one of their representatives, Chris Porto, showed up, took some notes, and said that he was a bit backed up but would email us a quote within a week and a half. When two weeks passed with no word from Porto, I emailed him requesting an update on the status of the estimate. He never replied. A few days later, I reached him by phone, and he hurriedly said he'd have the estimate within two days at most. Two days passed. Then another two weeks. Nothing. Earlier this week, I emailed again. No response. To me, this bespeaks a kind of contempt for prospective customers. If Landis Construction for whatever reason isn't interested in bidding on work, that is fine, but at the very least it should be candid with customers and not leave folks in the dark. If their inability to deliver a simple estimate or return emails is any indication, you may want to look elsewhere, particularly if professionalism, responsiveness and reliability are important to you.

They did an excellent job. They showed up on time and were very professional. The job was good quality. They were a little pricey, but they were well worth it.
