Upon establishing my business in 1992 in the District of Columbia, I made a personal vow to offer my clients integrity, quality and reliability. These high standards have opened the doors and allowed John Himchak Construction Company Inc to work for some of the most influential professionals in Washington, DC. JHCC appreciated the opportunity on several occasions to work for politicians and attorneys on Capitol Hill. The experience of working to preserve the architectural and historical integrity of the homes and business in Washington, DC has been both challenging and rewarding, and came in handy upon the recent purchase and renovation of my own home in the Capitol Hill area. Award winning.

The job went extremely well! The entire process, from start to finish, was only two days. As explained, Mr. Himchak's crew arrived and removed the old driveway, walk way and front step and completed the preparations for the pouring of the concrete the following day. The following morning, the crew arrived and finished the minor details and when the concrete arrived, the work began. By 3pm that afternoon, the new driveway, walk way and front step were done. The crew cleaned up and it appeared as though no work had been done that day. That evening, Mr. Himchak arrived to discuss the work that had been done. When I explained my complete satisfaction with the work, I paid him and he explain the details again that we had discussed in our first meeting.
Description of Work: I called JHI Contracting as my first stop in getting quotes for having my driveway replaced. I explained to Mr. Himchak that I was looking for quotes and he explained in detail what I should hear from other contractors. After checking with three other contracting companies from Angie's List, I made my choice. Mr. Himchak arrived the afternoon of May 24 to view the project and we signed a contract that evening. He explained in detail what was going to happen the mornings of May 29 and 30. The first step in the process was to remove the old driveway. The concrete from the old driveway had cracked and in some places, sunk down. At one location near the entrance of the garage, the concrete had dropped about 9 inches. Mr. Himchak explained the old driveway would be removed, stone and sand would be brought in to level out the entire length (58 feet) and width (18 feet). The new driveway, once poured, would be 4 inches thick and would be reinforced with half inch, number 4 rebar. The concrete would be tied to the garage by steel rebar drilled into the floor facing for added strength. The added wire, along with the rebar, was put in so the concrete would have something to adhere to and not just sit on the gravel and sand. The edges of the driveway were lined with 2X4 pieces of lumber. The concrete was poured the next day and the process was finished by 3pm that afternoon.

John came out to do an estimate within 24 hours and the price was right! He scheduled the job in less two weeks and his crew did a great job! I am going to use him for all my home improvement jobs, assuming the price continues to be right, and I would recommend him to my family & friends. The only suggestion: make sure you either pull your rugs up or lay down something - I forgot to pull up a white rug and they walked on it and ruined it.
Description of Work: The job entailed pouring concreted in an area in my basement that was about 12x8 and replacement of a small basement window.

The project went extremely well. I had brick steps and landings that needed to be replaced. Jim Himchak was very responsive and he provided excellent workers and they did a professional job. They took away all the old material and left the area clean.
Description of Work: I needed brick work on steps and landings. I called Jim Himchak of JHI on a Thursday and he came the next day. We discussed the work to be performed. We agreed on a contract and he said he could start the following week. His workers arrived on time the following Tuesday and completed the project Thursday morning.

Under promised and Over Delivered, which is how I do business. So I very much appreciated no unpleasant surprises. The job was done ahead of schedule and took less than a week to complete. I am very impressed with the quality of the labor. This is so much nicer than a plain concrete patio.

This was a nice job from start to finish. John H wanted to come out a few hours after I called. I had to tell him to wait a day! Always the utmost in professionalism. We negotiated price, briefly. Two days later, my driveway was gone. The next day, I had a new one. Today, they finished the final touches (some filling in of dirt, and removal of the wooden mold that contains the concrete. I'll be able to park a car on it in three more days.
Description of Work: Removed old 8" concrete driveway. Replaced with new concrete driveway. Increased the size, Regraded to deal with puddling. Beautiful work!

Mr. Hemchek responded immediately to my request for an estimate. He came back for a second time (since I couldn't be present for the first visit) to make some slight clarifications/adjustments. This experience was the kind of experience you wish you could have with all contractors/vendors. The job was started on the proposed date and finished in 2 days. His crew arrived early and worked until dark. When the job was finished all debris was removed. The work is beautiful. Neighbors were stopping to watch them work. I saw several people stop and ask for business cards. If only all contractors worked all this!

I picked a list of contractors from Angie's list to get estimates. John was the first one to respond, and he was at my house within a few hours of talking to him. He quickly looked the situation over, showed me some pictures of similar work he had done, then sat down to write out a detailed estimate. The price was a little higher than I was expecting, though not prohibitively, and he made a point of emphasizing the quality/amount of materials in his quote and his lifetime guarantee. We were a little more cautious than usual for this job, since it is the largest single item expense we've had since recently buying the house and the end result will be set in stone (so to speak). We were surprised at the range of proposals and ended up getting 3 more quotes with 1coming in higher than JHI and 2 others that were lower but in the same ballpark. In the end, we chose from the ones who wrote the most detail in their estimates because it was really the only way to accurately compare what they were offering for the price, especially when thinking back to estimates 2 weeks in the past. Even so, we had to call them back to clarify a few points before making a decision. When we called John again with questions, he again came out on the same evening to look in person, and from our questions it seemed that we would need more extensive work to get everything we needed. John offered us a significantly discounted price for including the additional work of constructing concrete retaining walls along both sides of the driveway, and we took it. John came out at a later date with his foreman to go over the site again a few days before starting the work, and he was patient in answering our questions when we called in the meantime. The morning of the job, we just made sure the water was turned on outside before leaving for work. JHI brought their own gas generator for electricity. When I came home from work that evening, the workers were putting on the broom finish at the end of the job. I must admit that it is an amazingly good looking driveway - much better looking than we had imagined while discussing it. The concrete retaining walls were done simply and cleanly, and the whole drive looks attractive and professionally done. We're looking forward to being able to unload groceries from the driveway. Water seems to be running away from that side of the house now, so I'm looking forward to a drier basement in the future as well. John came back the next day to remove the forms and do backfill cleanup, and that is when he collected his payment. We are obviously pleased with the work that JHI did for us, and we would definitely consider them for other jobs in the future. They were punctual, professional, and they did good quality work.
Description of Work: We hired JHI to remove our existing 8ft x 53ft driveway consisting of 2 concrete strips, remove an adjoining concrete step beneath our side stairs that sloped in towards the house, and install a full 10ft wide concrete driveway that also extended beneath and behind the side stairs. The inward sloping area around the side steps was important to us because we have moisture issues in the basement on that side of the house. Also, we had high sloping yards on either side of the 8ft driveway, so that you could only really open car doors on one side and it was very hard to squeeze past a car parked on the driveway. In one day, JHI removed the old driveway, poured the new wider concrete drive with broom finish, and built small retaining walls on either side where the driveway extended into the sloped yards.

They were prompt in coming out and giving me the estimate. They were very nice, but the estimate was high. I didn't spend any money for it. I thought the price for the concrete removal was extremely expensive. I would not consider using them in the future because of the high price.

He came in punctually. The estimate was a little high-$8,000.00.Work was performed on schedule. Workers damaged gutters, but when I called, they came back and fixed them. The owner was very concerned about my feedback with Angie's List, which leads me to believe that he gets a lot of business from here. I would hire again-I would check around for a cheaper price, though.
Description of Work: The house was built in1936. I was trying to stop my basement from leaking. The water was seeping into the basement in the rear as the brick flooring was sloped incorrectly. Also, the gutters around the house had sunken-in discharge pipes, which were leaking and causing damp spots in the basement inside. Concrete was poured in the backyard-about 9ft x 23ft, and in front- 10ft x 10 ft. So far so good-the leaks stopped as the water runs off without seeping in.

The service and follow up was prompt. But the work itself seemed rushed. It seems like they took the concrete setter's out too soon and the porch sunk. I followed up with management and they came out and repaired the problem. They used slate tiling to get it a more astetic look and to hide the problem.

The foreman and the owner John, both were pretty responsive. First time the contractors came, they did the job all in one day. They rushed the job a little bit and as a result, the porch sank. They did the floorings off the porch too early. I told them it didn't look good. They came in and made it look better. They agreed to put in a flagstone to cover up the concrete and leveled it out a little bit. I got the job done correctly.

He called back within a few hours, said he was booked solid for much of the year, and recommended someone else for the job I described. I was very impressed that he took the time to let me know he could not do my job, when many, if not most, would simply not have bothered to call back and that he gave me the name and phone number of someone he could recommend. There were two problems with my driveway: 1) the concrete was crumbling and needed to be replaced; and 2) the angle of entry was so steep that I would often scrape the bottom of my car entering the garage. When I called John he came out right away and gave me my options. He carefully explained the pros and cons of each. I went with the less expensive option, but he did such a great job that I got all of the benefits of the more expensive one! John was every thing I could ask for: responsive, professional and high-quality. I highly recommend him!

Despite some early problems, the project went very well. JHI came in, dug out and waterproofed my front wall, and replaced the dirt in a single day. I inspected the work afterwards and I couldn't even tell the ground had been disturbed. It was incredible. DC experienced some very heavy rains a couple of weeks following the job. I inspected my basement afterwards and water had penetrated the wall. Concerned, I called JHI. John arrived at my house within 15 minutes (from Silver Spring, MD) to assess and correct the situation. The type of leak I had required a more extensive solution than simply waterproofing the front wall. John identified the problem, revisited my basement the next day with his foreman to find a solution, and corrected the problem within the week - free of charge. He installed more waterproofing inside the front wall and a channel to move water away from my house and out to the public storm drain. I haven't had a leak since, but if I do I know I can call JHI and get the problem fixed right away. I plan on using JHI in the future.
Description of Work: JHI waterproofed the below-grade portion of the front wall of my rowhouse. He dug out the soil against the wall, installed the water proofing material, shored up with concrete the parts of wall that had been degraded over time, and replaced the soil. He also waterproofed the inside of the wall to ensure water did not penetrate.

We are extremely pleased. All went well. The workmen did a great job, were pleasant and careful. If you need concrete work done, JHI is knowledgeable, well-priced, and does excellent work. We feel lucky to have found them therough Angie's List.
Description of Work: JHI replaced our concrete parking space. That involved removing a deteriorated concrete parking slab, including removal of large roots from an adjacent oak tree that had broken up the concrete making the space nearly unusable. JHI then poured concrete with an internal layer of steel reinforcement to prevent the tree roots from breaking up the new concrete slab. They angled the concrete from the parking space smoothly down to the driveway so that it is now easy to drive off and onto the concrete slab.
