We had just purchased a renovated home in NE DC and while the interior of the home had been redone, the backyard was a mess of deep gravel. It was difficult to walk on, much less park a car or do anything else. I found JHI Contracing on Angie's List and based on the quality of their reviews, had them come in to take a look at what could be done. John's communication throughout the bidding process was fantastic and the paver/concrete options that he laid out for us fit our needs and budget. Not only that, his demonstrated great flexibility with his financing terms, which allowed us to stretch a little further and get exactly what we wanted. John is a true DC local as well, and we were happy to give him our business. In the end we decided to go with concrete pavers installed in a basket weave pattern and a concrete pad for a future shed. When it came to the work, John and his team did a fantastic job on our backyard. I provided a rudimentary design sketch of what my fiancee and I envisioned. The JHI team actually improved on the initial design with their final work! The job was completed within the quoted time frame. Plus, John's foreman and team were all really friendly guys and they did a great job. Literally the only complaint I have--and it's an extremely minor one--was that they didn't fill one small section of the pavers with polymeric sand. This section had to be completed on a different day, so maybe they forgot? This has caused ants and other bugs to come up through that section of pavers, plus it doesn't quite match the rest of the yard which does have the sand. It's a minor complaint, like I said, but it would've been nice. A few days after the backyard was completed, my fiancee and I ate dinner outside. We were taken aback by how happy we were. JHI transformed our backyard from a total mess into something wonderfully usable. I HIGHLY recommend John and JHI contracting. They easily live up to their Angie's List scores.

The "gentleman" and I use the term in the most loose fashion who answered the phone was a complete jerk. Rude and unprofessional, he did not identify himself or his firm, was not interested in speaking to me about my request. I was informed he was "too busy" and not taking any more jobs for the rest of the year. Clearly there is no reason for anyone else to bother contacting this company. They don't need my or your business.

Although a little eager in drumming up my business, JHI was prompt and completely professional in carrying out a difficult job which involved extensive permitting in a historical district, erecting scaffolding (without damaging the garden), and making two days of repair. I am completely satisfied.

Lower of two bids; done on time; excellent result; saved plants in narrow bed bordering driveway

First, I picked JHI because it got glowing reviews on Angie's List and no negatives. His office is on Capitol Hill and I took that into consideration as well. I called John Himchak the owner and he swung by because he was doing a job literally around the corner from us. John looks like a concrete guy, big guy with massive arms and shoulders and he really knows concrete. My brother who lives in Montana does lots of work with concrete and had given me a list of things to look for. John filled out the work order and every single item my brother mentioned was on the work order. And he also has a 25 year guarantee on his work. Then we come to today. John mentioned his crew led by Jose would be around between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. They showed up at 7:45 AM and the four guys in the crew worked nonstop. First they cleaned out all of the debris, the old slab that was only part of the area they were going to pour and lots of weeds and a massive tree stump. They even took out an enormous piece of concrete that was protruding into our yard. Jose even suggested a step down to our sidewalk as part of the pour. After they cleaned up the mess they brought in four inches of gravel, then put in wire mesh and rebar. When the cement guy came at 11:00 AM they were ready for him. By 3:30 they had cut the wet concrete and applied the broom finish. And to top it all they left the work area very, very clean and put up a yellow caution tape so people won't run over the concrete as it dries. If you want to have concrete work done don't look any further than JHI Contracting. John, Jose and their crew are great!!!!!

Wonderfully! This was a difficult job, as everything had to through our living space to get to the back. On the day the project began JHI helped us clear out some furniture and they carefully laid down plastic to protect everything in the house. They worked very hard to demolish everything that day in time for our plumbers to appear the next day, who had to do some work. After that they promptly resumed work and despite some rain worked very hard to get the whole project done within one week's time. The new patio looks magnificent. Also it is now sloped correctly to drain into the drains, so puddles do not form. I was very impressed at how carefully the masons from JHI worked to ensure both beautiful and functional layout of the pavers. JHI was a pleasure to work with throughout the process. The owner John was very responsive at the start and throughout the job, as was the foreman Jose. JHI also did a good job of keeping our house as clean as possible. I would work with them again without any hesitation and warmly recommend them.

We had a concrete driveway replaced. John came out on a saturday and gave us an estimate. We accepted his estimate and the work was scheduled for the following week. John called as a few days before and the day before to let us know they would be there and make sure the time was still ok for us. The work was completed in two days. John's crew did a great job of cleaning up afterwards and even hauled away an old basketball pole that was removed as part of the process. The quality of the work looks very good. One of my neighbors, who had his driveway done last year, called me while they were working on ours to tell me what a thorough job they were doing. We are very pleased and recomend JHI.

I called and left a message requesting an estimate to replace my driveway - the recorded message indicated that my call would be returned between 7 and 9 pm that night. It was not. When I did receive a call the next day, I was told that it was not necessary for anyone from the company to come to my house to prepare an estimate and that I should go outside to get the measurements I then received a proposal in the mail.

John is great! He is not only a excellent mason and contractor but also a neighbor. He knows the houses on Capitol Hill very well as he lives in one. John came out to our house, gave us a no nonsense quote and even showed us around his house and the work he's done there. I highly recommend JHI and especially if you have a brick row house on the Hill.

JHI did a great job replacing our driveway. They arrived on time on the appointed day, broke up the existing concrete driveway and hauled it away. The areas were leveled, framed, and reinforced with gravel, a heavy wire mesh, and rebar before the new concrete was poured. A flagstone walkway and area for shooting basketballs was also taken up and replaced in the same manner. The driveway and the other areas are angled a bit so that rain water will run off properly. All this comes with a lifetime warranty. The crew did an excellent job and all the work was completed in a timely and very professional manner. The price was right and we highly recommend this company.

His license was verified. I did not ending up utilizing his service because he only wanted to do 1 side of the retaining wall. They callled at a later date because I also need tuckpointing done. I may end up using them in the future for that job.

The project went very well. Would hire again and plan to do just that. Having an under deck patio poured.

John called to move up the date for the work when he had an opening. The workers arrived on time, explained what they were going to do, and were very careful and efficient. They completed the job on the first day to the point of pouring the cement for the driveway walks, and storage area. The next day they returned to uncover the cement and remove the wooden frames. They also did a nice job of cleaning up and replacing sod.

The job was professionally done. JHI Contracting was available by phone for any questions. Job was completed for exact amount of estimate.

They did a great job with all of it. They were fast, courteous, professional and cleaned up after the job really well. John Hinchack seems very knowledgeable and experienced. They broke up and hauled away just about every tiny piece of concrete. The bricks used come as close as you can get to matching our existing brick walls. The laid bricks on the wall are straight and plumb. I found one tiny flaw in a kind of hidden spot. I called and they came out the next day to repair it. From my comparison of JHI and a few other contractors their price was right around the average.

Had to call 3 times, being asked to call another time the first two times, and the third time he took down my number. Gave a price that was about 2-3x higher than competing bids without ever seeing the site (makes sense - if the estimate is high enough, it doesn't matter how excavation is required). Asked me if I, the homeowner, was going to deal with the county inspector. (?) What kind of question is that? I guess having to deal with the county official responsible for making sure the work is performed correctly according to local codes and ordinances costs extra. I would be cautious with this one.

This company is wonderful!! If I ever need concrete work done again I would call them in a second to do it. Very nice on the phone, reasonably fast to start the work and finished in a day. The workers were very nice as well. I hired them to take up our front sidewalk, which is 35 feet by 3 feet, and replace it with a new concrete ramp taking out the steps. It is WONDERFUL and looks great. Thanks JHI!!!

He did a phenominal job. His workers were very friendly and professional. The price was reasonable. The final result is wonderful! They were able to pour the concrete in such a way that water no longer pools when it gets wet. They were open to ideas and spoke with us throughout the process.

John was easy to get a hold of. Gave a fair estimate. Had a good group of guys that did very professional work. Saw a couple issues after completion of work and John came back to make the small repairs without any problems. I highly recommend John and his services.

We highly recommend John and his crew because they make you feel like your job is important, and their workmanship was excellent. JHI’s was one of five estimates we received and ultimately became the best price for over 2,000 square feet of new concrete. The final price was also the same as the estimate, which was another reason we chose JHI. A few contractors that gave us estimates went right down the path of “It could be more depending on what we find...” Bottom line, if you want quality work that’s completed on time and within the agreed price, then call JHI. By the way, several people have stopped by the house to admire the expanded driveway and new sidewalk.

Larry did a beautiful job. He was professional and punctual and the price was good.

Overall, I was very happy with this work and we'll be contacting him again when we decide to complete the rest of the building. John was very responsive to all our concerns, he did a great job getting everything complete quickly, and even followed-up with us several weeks later to make sure there was no further water damage after a big storm had hit. The tuckpointing was well done and we're happy with this work.

I left a message on Mr. Himchak's cell phone requesting an estimate and he called back within the hour, setting up a time on the same day for him to come take a look. He came exactly at the time he said he would, and wrote up a detailed estimate on the spot. After deciding to hire JHI to do the work, Mr. Himchak gave me almost-daily updates as to when the work would be scheduled. His crew showed up at 8am on the day the work was to commence and worked all day until 6:30pm, coming back the next day to complete the job. The crew was professional and the workmanship was first-rate. The back patio came out exactly as we were hoping and throughout the whole process Mr. Himchak was extremely responsive and honest. I would certainly not hesitate to use JHI again.
