Our counter top was installed on February 29th. We had a few issues throughout the entire installation process and afterwards, which I’ve chosen to write to you about. First of all, I was told the installation crew would arrive around 10 a.m.; however, they didn’t arrive until 12:30. Upon their arrival, the hole for the drop-in cook top and faucet were not cut ahead of time. They were cut in the afternoon, in my kitchen, causing granite dust throughout my entire house, both downstairs and upstairs. Norm the owner came back to our house that evening and said he would look into a cleaning crew, but didn’t appear to be happy about it. At first, he tried to blame me for not stopping them. However, they are professionals and should know what they are doing. Taking something like this outside to cut would have been a better option. On Friday morning at 6:15 a.m., Norm and one cleaning lady arrived with a Swifter and a small vacuum. We were expecting a cleaning crew. When asked, she said it would take her about 4-5 hours. Upon arriving home that night, things did look better, but we could tell we would still have many hours of work ahead of us. Even the shelf linings in the kitchen cabinets and drawers that were two rooms away had to be replaced and cleaned underneath. All our food, which we had moved into a different room to keep out of harm’s way, had to be thrown away since it was layered in dust. Many dishwashers full of dishes and a lot to be cleaned by hand had to be done as well. The window sill in the kitchen above the cabinet still had a layer of dust and hadn’t been cleaned. Overall I was expecting to come home and have my house rid of its layer of granite dust. As the granite was repaired, a chip was found near the oven, this was fixed. However, the cabinet next to the spot had all black streaks from the repair. This had to be sanded and repainted. I was surprised we didn’t even get a phone call to see how things were after the cleaning lady had left. Also, I called your company the following Wednesday and even then nothing was asked about how things were. All and all I like the counter, sink, and faucet, but I think we are entitled to some sort of compensation for all the mess that was caused. After all of this disruption to our house my wife did her annual Spring cleanning a couple months later. Too her continue surprise the water used to washed the walls down was grey matching the counter top. We have pictures of the granite dust found through out the house on both floors and she did save the water that was contaiminated with the counter top dust. The day after the counter top was cut I did contact my Doctor to make sure the air was good to breath as that night both Karen and I had difficulty breathing and our eyes were irritated by the granite dust. Norm the owner has never given us a warm feeling that this issue would be resolved to our liking. Plus his first word apond arriving at our house the day of the diaster was I never do give backs!
Description of Work: We purchase a granite counter top and faucet from LCN Kitchen and Bath. Everything was proceeding extremely well untill the day of installation.

Response from LCN Kitchen & Bath
Upon receiving the certified mail envelope from the members, I called the husband on his cell phone at work. We were given this number during the purchasing process. I was told by him that his wife had written the letter. At this point, we felt it better that I speak directly to her. A few days later , I received her call. She stated that both her and her husband had spoken to others and that everyone agreed that they were due some sort of compensation. I questioned her as to “is that” why she circled the $150.00 on the original invoice. Her answer came back ”that it should be more like $500.00”. During our conversation, she enlightened me that she was also a small business owner and knew what and how to contact the “BBB” and others; and would use social media also to discredit our company. She was also proud to let me know there were others listening to our conversation midway through our conversation. She even stated that while they were penning the letter to my company she was telling everyone she could of her dissatisfaction. Hearing that, I decided it best to bid her a good day. The work was done February 29th, 2012 why did it take until May 8, 2012 for them to contact us, by letter, as to their dissatisfaction? They have discovered why I do not play poker. I do not have a poker face. When I walked into their house and saw the dust I was mortified. How could this happen? I asked her, “Did you see them cutting the hole” and her answer was “no”. the contractors had put plastic up and were inside of that plastic cutting the hole. Apparently, the vacuum, that was outside the plastic and where she was, had a malfunctioning filter and was allowing dust into the house. Did I blame her, no, but I may have asked he why did you not say something if you noticed the dust. Yes, at first glance I questioned why cut the granite in the house. Please be reminded we are talking about cutting a rock. To cut this outside would have weakened the structure of the stone and possibly cause it to break. We use three contracting companies to install granite. Their answers were pre-cut the corners or full cut in the house. If the vacuuming is functioning properly, the dust problem does not exist. The faucet holes are always done in place. Yes, I offered to send a cleaning crew to resolve the issue at my expense. As I drove home I remembered we had a friend who owns a cleaning company. A this time I prefer not to publish this company’s name. The member has the company information or you can contact me personally. Because this was a delicate situation, my thoughts were to go to someone I could trust to do a good job and could relate to the urgency of the situation. This owner felt it better to do the work herself rather than sending in a crew. When I spoke to the husband after the repair of the chip, he thanked me for having it done. He had earlier said he wanted no representative of that company in his house. They were there to fix it and he said go ahead. As for not calling after the cleaning of their house, I was there in the morning to introduce everyone. I was there when the cleaning was finished and I believe I was there early afternoon when she told me she had heard the cleaning lady had left. (Apparently some kind neighbor was watching the house). After we all inspected the house I left. My parting words were “If any other concerns crop up, please call and they will be taken care of.” Also, as I walked out, I asked the husband how he liked his new Camaro in the snow. He said he had read about it in Consumer Report and they gave it a good rating. I told him we had a Mustang and that it was poor in the snow. His reply was he also like the Mustang, but had an in-law that sold Chevy. Notwithstanding, I would certainly not think this conversation took place the first evening, as those were some tense times or early that morning when we had gotten together so I could introduce the cleaning lady. In the closing of their quote me as saying “I never do give backs”. What they failed to do is give my reasoning. My reason for saying that is simple; giving money does not fix the problem. Fixing the problem in a timely, professional manner, fixes the problem. Poor workmanship or any other type of concern can be fixed. I would rather have people know that a problem has occurred and have them be told it was fixed to the customer’s satisfaction. They were made aware of my reasoning. As stated, when I left, any problem or concern they had I believed as taken care of. I asked for them to give me a call if something else arose. To receive a certified letter more than 60 days after the work was done and to circle the $ 150.00 charge for the cut-out and then being told they wanted $500.00 in compensation in one breath just floored me. They had spent those 60 plus days making sure everyone they knew was made aware of that happened and this dissatisfaction while discrediting LCN Kitchen and Bath without notification. I have great difficulty accepting the fact that in 20 years of doing business; an unhappy customer can discredit what I have worked my whole life for without at least calling to make us aware of a problem. As stated in their letter, they were surprised when “THEY CALLED” and that we did not ask how things were going. On our side, why open a closed wound. Did they not have the same opportunity while they were on the telephone to mention their displeasure? With them doing their best to discredit LCN Kitchen and Bath and using the 60 plus day period for the date of this situation and the letter being received shows that the “Hush Money” or compensation, as it is politically called, in not due them. They have already worked tirelessly at discrediting our company. As for the ratings on Angie’s List, this is much like getting a job review. Price-“B” is moderate work. Quality is a judgment. Responsive- I was there that evening and had a cleaning person at their house at 6:15am the next morning. Punctuality- is a broad term. It is stated the appointment was for 10am. According to the local weather report, it had snowed 4.4 inches in Windsor Locks. Apparently no one remembered this point; guess that is how the conversation got started about Camaro’s and Mustangs. Professionalism- As I stated, I do not have a poker face. As an olive branch gesture, LCN Kitchen and Bath will make a $150.00 donation to a charity of their choice. Sincerely, Norman H Boucher LCN Kitchen and Bath LLC
