Brought laptop in for diagnosis, was quoted, while my wife waited, $180 for replacement of keyboard and palm rest, due to neither working, which we authorized. We were then called back and and my wife was told by Jason the repair would in fact be over $270, my wife declined the repairs at that time and was told that that due to the incorrect estimate there would be no charge for the diagnosis. When I went to pick up the laptop, I was presented a bill for $55 diagnosis, which I paid, not realizing that it was supposed to be at no charge. On returning home with the laptop, I decided to take a look at it myself. Within about 5min, I had the keyboard accessed and found that the keyboard ribbon connector was not connected. I connected the ribbon to its terminal, reassembled the laptop and everything works! I then returned to Computer Tamers seeking a refund of the charges that I had paid for (and Jason had said I wouldn't be charged for). They refused to give me the refund, accused my wife of being rude on the phone (the person whom she spoke with was not even there) and told me to take my computer and leave!! Be careful, these people are not true to their word, seem to practice bait and switch when it comes to repair costs, and their diagnosis process is suspect, if not out and out incompetent,,,, not take out 4 screws and find the disconnected wire!

Response from The Computer Tamers
The member filed a complaint with the BBB... the two complaints are different and not what actually happened. We document every contact with our customers both written and often recorded. The member's wife was given an estimated price by Mish, the technician she spoke with, (when she submitted her computer for diagnosis on July 8th, 2011) regarding the symptoms she outlined on the intake form for the keyboard and touchpad. When Jaison finished the diagnosis he called her and explained the results of his diagnosis and tests and the associated parts and labor costs. She became agitated with the diagnosis and the costs at that point Jaison told her that if she didn’t want the computer fixed she would only owe our diagnosis labor fee. She complained to him that our diagnosis processes and the time that he spent on her computer were not worth $55. Jaison became upset with such an insult she gave him out of her ignorance. Even though our policy is to not refund labor charges but instead correct any deficiencies in accordance with our repair warranties, Jaison did tell her that if she felt that way he wouldn’t charge her for his diagnosis. Our front desk personnel were not notified of Jaison’s decision and charged the diagnosis fee per our procedures when the member picked up his wife’s computer on July 11th, 2011. Later when the member came in for a refund he was verbally abusive with our front desk agent from moment he spoke and also with another technician assisting her. He was loud and demeaning to the staff (Mish and Ginny). Jaison was not available at the time. Hearing the commotion and observing the behavior of the member I made the decision to follow and honor our published labor policy; and at the time I had no motivation to do any additional research. During the entire incident I did not hear the member mention that Jaison told his wife that he wasn’t going to charge her. If that would have been all he said when he came in, then he would have gotten the refund then and there. The member's wife came into the service center a few days before we received this complaint and spoke with Jaison and apologized to him for her actions on the phone and requested that we quote not blackball her end-quote. Even so, she filed this complaint with the BBB. There is good coming from this official complaint and is that I did the necessary research. I will honor Jaison’s original offer to not charge her for the diagnosis and will provide a refund to her American Express Card. The member used an American Express Card when he picked up his wife’s computer. We don’t keep customers’ credit card numbers on file and our accounting systems hide all digits but the last four, so I will need her to call me and provide the account number and expiration date so that I can issue the refund. My condition is that she go to another service provider that she trusts for future service since both she and her husband do not value our time and expertise and have exhibited irrational conduct. My job is to ensure that we devote our limited resources to helping customers who appreciate our service and expertise. In accordance with the desired resolution of the member's wife, she will be provided with a refund for our labor performed on her computer. My phone number is 860-456-1310 extension 104. If she gets my voicemail, she should leave a message and I will call her back. If she leaves the credit card number in her message along with the expiration date, I will delete the message permanently from our voice processing system once I process the refund. She may also stop in and one of our agents will process her refund using her card at our front reception terminal. P.S. Although the member's wife apologized to Jaison, the member was compelled to file this complaint along with one to the BBB. We have some 5,000 customers and the members make up a small fraction of customers who are unwilling to listen to professionals with the expertise and experience who actually do care about the customer's needs. Allen Stein of the Computer Tamers responded to this complaint.
