After having many different contractors out to see the house and discuss our plan, and hearing what they couldn't do, Matt Gove came out to give us a quote and saw our vision and was not only ready to take it on, but excited to do so and seemed ready to be able to handle any obstacles he may encounter with our older home. In doing our research we knew he had worked with much older homes than ours so we felt confident in him and his capabilities. We were kept up to date with the ordering of the windows and the accuracy of the timeline. Matt was a great communicator and the job went flawlessly. The men who were here to do the work were timely, polite, respectful, and enjoyable to be around. They were knowledgable about the work they were doing and explained as they went along and answered any questions we had with a smile. They worked hard, didn't waste time, and cleaned up at the end of each day, which was important to us since we have little ones in the house and that play in the yard. We are more than pleased with the outcome of our new windows. The transformation is beautiful and it feels like a new home! Matt stopped in to check on the progress and how we liked it to be sure we were happy with the process, the crew, and the finished product. He reached out a few days after to be sure we were still happy and made sure that we knew to call him in the future if we had any issues. The whole experience was pleasurable and professional from start to finish. If you're looking for someone to do a job for you- it's a no- brainer. These are YOUR guys. Their ours from now on when we have something we need done. We will call them first! Great business, great guys, amazing work!
Description of Work: Removed in wall air conditioners (1 in bedroom and 1 in living room) cut into existing outer walls and converted the open space from these air conditioners into new windows. House was built in 1955 and had aluminum siding and many layers of siding underneath.

Encompassing several weeks beginning the first week of April and culminating on May 13th -- Matt Gove was the best contractor I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. With his marvelous energy, personality, and vast knowledge -- Matt Gove provided a huge sense of Peace which I've never experienced in this 1927'sh period home I grew up in. My new kitchen is total masterpiece with new white cabinets, blue pearl granite countertops, incredible German faucet, & stainless steel appliances. Growing up, the floor had this ho-hum tile. Upon inspection, underneath was this oak wood which Matt Gove transformed into an incredible bright & breathing material of its own with his unique mastery of woodworking! In addition, the adjoining kitchen/basement door was not only straightened -- the ugly paint enamel was taken off to show an incredible wood pattern that not only contrasts so well w/the floor but everything else! Words can't describe the wonder that both my daughter & myself feel when we enter the house every time from the front door. I don't even want to bring anything in for a long time just to savor the beauty of that room! Along those same lines, I feel exactly the same w/ the other rooms involved -- dining, living, & hall that were treated to a cleansing & rebirth by Matt Gove & Team!
Description of Work: Kitchen transformation w/ a lot of "bells & whistles," Dining, Living, & Front Hall w/ Stairs interior painting and lighting.
Matt and Adam, Paul and all of the subs were meticulous, professional, and very respectful of our home while they were working here. Our questions or concerns were handled promptly and addressed to our satisfaction. They offered good recommendations (such as recessed lighting) which added to the beauty of the project. They worked 8 am - 3:30 pm with a 30 minute lunch break every day and cleaned up after themselves with their tools neatly stacked and lined up before leaving for the day. They arrived on time and asked questions when necessary. It was a pleasure working Gove Restoration. We would definitely hire them again and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.
Description of Work: We did a kitchen renovation, including the partial removal of a wall and installation of a beam. Work included new insulation, electrical, plumbing, stainless steel island hood, cabinets, countertops and breakfast bar, flooring, trim, pantry door, and painting of walls, ceiling, trim and stairway to upstairs. In addition to the kitchen, the project included work in the living room, dining room and front hall.

Matt Gove gave his honest opinion of what he thought the work would entail and then provided us with a very detailed, clear proposal. We felt very comfortable with his professionalism and had no worries or concerns about the signing the contract. Matt was very clear on his schedule and the work began on time. His team was professional, friendly, neat and accommodating and we especially appreciated their conscientiousness in keeping doorways and entrances covered with plastic to keep any dust or debris out of the rest of the house. Matt also kept us abreast of the progress of work and any unforeseen issues that arose due to the age of our house. The trim work that Matt and his team put up matches the original trim in our house and we are extremely impressed and happy. Matt told us before the job started that he would make the room look as if there had never been a wall and he certainly did that! We would highly recommend Gove Restoration for any home improvement job and look forward to work with Matt and Adam in the future.

We are so thrilled with the beautiful work that Gove Restoration did on the exterior of our house. They made a long time dream come true for us. Matt, Adam, and Mr. Gove are true professionals and a pleasure to work with. They kept us up to date and answered all of our questions throughout the project. We would (and will) most definitely work with them again on future home projects.
Description of Work: Restored the exterior of 1920's home by stripping off all of the siding, restoring the wood, including trim,, and painting the entire house.
This is not my first experience with Gove Restoration and I have additional work scheduled by them. They are on the high end of pricing, but the "you get what you pay for" saying is apt. They also use quality products like Benjamin Moore paint and are knowledgable about changes in construction product technology. E.g., because of a newer primer technology and two top coats, I expect to get 3-5 more years out of this paint job than the last (which Gove also did and which held up well). They understand historic houses (I live in Old Wethersfield) and are able to navigate around and often anticipate the idiosyncrasies of old houses. They understand the expectations of the Historic District Commission. They also have subcontractor contacts for work that is better done by someone with a particular expertise, such as plumbers, electricians and insulation contractors and tested resources for items likes doors and windows. I trust them in my house when I am not here. The Goves and their crew are knowledgable, respectful, clean and they do not smoke. They are willing to answer one's questions and discuss pros and cons of various options in a way homeowner's can understand. They have all the right tools, which contribute to a truly professional job. They are thorough, neat and follow through. Be aware that they make estimates, not bids. My experience is that their estimates are based upon few glitches and that with old houses, glitches are the norm. Also, I find that when one gets into a project, there are often add ons that one did not originally consider. So, do not be surprised if the final cost turns out to be 20% or more over the estimate.
Description of Work: Paint house and trim, install blown in insulation in exterior walls (sub-contracted), rebuild front porch deck and stairs, install new railing, rebuild back porch steps and screens, install some storm doors and windows. Work took roughly a month including a paint crew of 2-4, 1-2 carpenters and a sub.

I tried calling them numerous times and no one answered. Finally I left a voicemail and three days later i get a phone call back. I review what i need done and they say they'll be glad to come out to my house to take care of the work. I take the day off of work, and they just come to do an estimate (which was never communicated to me). So I take it in stride and after hey inspected the bathroom and the outside of the house, they reviewed with me what needed to be done to install an exhaust fan in my master bathroom. Seemed pretty straight forward and they told me they'd get back to me with a quote. A week went by and I never got a call. So i called them up and I experienced the same thing. Had to wait days for a call back. When they did call me back, they didn't say how much it was going to be, but that they were going on vacation and couldn't do the work for another month or so. This is a 2-hour job! When i finally did get the quote in the mail, it was $1,000. I had 3 other quotes between $250-$400. These guys obviously thought it wasn't worth their time and just wanted to price gouge me. They never even followed up after the quote was sent. I would definitely never recommend them for any work, as they were lazy, unprofessional, and either incompetent or manipulative when it came to pricing. Either way, I would never call them again.

Response from Gove Restoration LLC
We at Gove Restoration LLC appreciate feedback provided regarding one’s experience with us. There are times, however where we feel the need to accurately portray the events that occurred. This review is one of those cases. Due to the fact that we are out working in the field, it is highly probable that a customer will call and no one would pick up. Every customer has the option to leave a message if they choose to do so. We strive for high customer service in returning calls within a reasonable amount of time. As an A rated company this can be seen through the numerous positive reviews we have received. There is a specific process at Gove Restoration LLC to generate an accurate, detailed, and fair quote. First, we talk to the homeowner to set up a time to come out and look at the proposed work. Secondly, we look at the proposed work to provide an accurate quote. Thirdly, a detailed estimate is written and mailed to the homeowner. Under no circumstance has Gove Restoration LLC completed work without a signed contract nor have we ever offered to come out the same day to complete work. In this case the appointment to look at the proposed work was set for 3:45 pm on a Thursday with the Angie’s List member’s husband. It was never stated the work would be completed that day as this is not our practice. The estimate was mailed to the customer within two weeks of the original appointment. This is considered a reasonable amount of time due to how many appointments we go on, the number of estimates generated, and the detail of our estimates. It is true it was stated that the work could not be completed until after my vacation. However, this was stated before the estimate was sent out to the homeowner. We do not schedule jobs without a signed contract. It is a small job; however, it would have been unfair to customers who previously signed contracts with us to move anyone ahead of them. The estimate to complete this work was for $1000. As previously mentioned, this is a small job. However, certain procedures must be followed to complete the work correctly. A permit must be applied for with the town building official to complete the electrical work. The existing light must be removed and an opening must be created to properly install the vent fan. The duct work must be run in the attic containing blown in insulation and trusses. This duct work must be terminated to a louver vent on the gable side of the house. Siding must be removed to install this louvered vent. Flashing must be installed under the louvered vent before the siding is re-installed to prevent water from getting behind the siding thus causing rot and mold. Finally, the electrical connections to the new fan must be completed by a licensed electrician. There is more work involved than just installing a fan. That being said, the price of $1000 is fair if comparing apples to apples, something which is very difficult to do in this industry. We have found that our quotes generally are higher when compared to others. Past customers have informed us previous work in their homes had an end result of higher totals than our estimates as a result of change orders, add-ons, or sloppy estimates. This is because we overturn every stone when looking at a job and provide a high quality of service. This particular job required working in an attic in the middle of summer where insulation had been blown in and where the home was built using trusses. This is not an “easy” task. Gove Restoration LLC is a company that does not “price gouge” and will work on any size job. Furthermore, as can be seen by the many prior reviews, we are fair, professional, honest, and a cut above the rest.

As usual, the Gove's did a great job. They are clear and accurate with their estimates, work with you on all the materials needed, arrange for all of the sub-contractors and are punctual every day on the job. Overall we were very pleased with the craftsmanship and work. There were a few issues with the subs, but the Goves resolved those issues to our satisfaction. They are careful to inspect all of the sub-contractors work and follow-up if work is not to their standards. They also made it a point to contact us almost every evening to give us a rundown of the work they did that day, ask how we liked it, did we see anything not up to our standards and then they would go over the next day's work and what to expect. Another very nice aspect to working with the Goves is that they leave your house as clean as they found it in the morning. We never came home to a mess, dust, debris or clutter. We will continue to use the Goves for all our future projects and will recommend them to any of our friends and family. Top notch company!
Description of Work: The Gove brothers did a complete renovation of our kitchen, powder room, family room and dining room.
We are so happy with the quality of Gove's work! The prices are absolutely fair, especially for the amount of time and care Gove Restoration puts into each job. Everything is done with precision, emails are answered quickly, and the final bill is equal to or very close to the estimate.
Description of Work: Replace damaged siding, removed all gutters and downspouts and replaced with new (with leaf guards). In the past, Gove Restoration has replaced siding and window trim on our former home in Wethersfield, CT, as well as completely renovated the front screened in porch.

The team did a great job of not only repairing the stairs, but also cleaning up during and after. You would never know they'd been there. Our stairs are like new; it was an overall great experience. So much so, we're waiting for estimates on a couple of other projects with them now.
Description of Work: Stairs were creaking very badly. The team reinforced them from underneath, requiring removal of the drywall ceiling on our basement stairs.
What was estimated was what was charged. No surprises. Put several coats of high quality paint. Best painting I've ever seen. This room seriously looks like it could be in a magazine and it makes me happy every time I look at it. Matt helped me pick the perfect color. Very polite, respectful, responsive, and communicated well throughout the project. Minimal disturbance to our family life. Minimal noise (I work at home). The workers were some family members and other employees that I felt comfortable with in my home. Very positive, creative, and productive. High integrity. They went back over the trim 3 times to catch any areas that may have been missed. My goal was to entertain in this room and wanted it to look beautiful. Although it was pricey, I now am SO happy with this room that I can't put a price on it. Even in this frigid, depressing weather this room just radiates beauty. If you want a top quality job, this is it! Check out their website to see the beautiful portfolio of work they have done. That's why I chose them. Thankful for Angie's List to help me find them as we are new to the area.
Description of Work: Paint living room and minor repairs to walls. Remove picture hangars and repair. Also paint trim around fireplace and curtain rods and holders.
This is an 1850's house and Gove Restoration did a wonderful job helping us figure out how to make the house look like new but retain its historic character. The walls look amazing and smooth, and you would never know that they have been standing for almost 200 years...and I have never seen such clean paint lines! The windows have been scraped and re-painted and all open and close smoothly. They will be coming back to repair broken window panes and finish a sun-porch when the weather warms in the spring. They were communicative at every step of the way, responsive when we had concerns, produced an extremely detailed contract and, wherever possible, stuck within the budget originally laid out. The project was expensive, but the work was done right and we wouldn't have it any other way. As many other reviews here indicate, Matt and Adam are hands-on contractors, and everyone on the team arrives on-time and works tirelessly to see the project completed. We feel like we can trust these contractors, and will be working with Gove Restoration on two bathrooms next and feel confident that they will help us create the bathrooms that we want in a way that complements the character of the house.
Description of Work: Repaired original plaster walls, took down old layers of wallpaper, used a mesh coating to smooth out walls, painted all walls, molding and trim, sheet rock overlay to cover all popcorn ceilings, installed hall and stair lighting, brought all electrical outlets up to code, repaired sashes and cords in all original windows.

The team of professionals at Gove Restoration provided me with excellent service from the time of my first call to them until they completed the job at my home. They called me promptly, arrived when they said that they would and completed the job as promised. They brought their equipment into my home respecting my property and cleaned up everything. The only way we knew they were here is that they left behind a fabulous painting job! I was updated on the progress of the my job with a text at the end of each day there were here. That was an added bonus for me. It was helpful to know that they were able to complete the job on time and that I could know how things would be when I got home. They gave guidance on the type of paint to use to get the very best result. These walls had not been painted for a long time and they took extra care to fix all of the popped nails, fill all of the picture hook holes, except the picture hooks that I wanted to keep. They were very thoughtful and very professional. I will definitely use them again. I can highly recommend them!!!!

The entire job went much better than I could have expected. I've never had much construction done inside the house and wasn't sure how much of an inconvenience it would be. The work took approximately 2 weeks and was performed by Matt, Adam and Paul from Gove as well as a few sub-contractors they brought in for the drywall hanging, taping and sanding. They were all great about communicating when they would arrive and how long the work would take each day. That was very helpful for me since I work from home and had to be careful about the noise interfering with my calls. To save me some money, they were able to revise the plan mid-job, deciding to add headers to separate the new ceiling from the other rooms where there hadn't been any structural damage. The headers were blended into the adjoining walls, making it look as if the headers were actually part of the wall. When they accidentally cut too close to an electrical cable, they told me about it right away and explained they were calling in an electrician on their own dime to check the wiring. Despite the fact there was no apparent damage, they had the electrician install a junction box just as a precaution. They did a great job containing the dust to the front part of the house and cleaning up as much as they could they could throughout the process. The resulting ceiling and walls look great and I couldn't be happier. I have no intention of searching for another contracting company for further work on my house. I've already asked them for quotes about some additional work I'd like them to do next year.
Description of Work: Gove repaired structural damage in the ceiling between my living room and dining room. This involved installing some additional cross beams and metal strapping to keep the primary beams from separating. After reinforcing the beams, they overlaid the living room and dining room ceilings with new drywall panels, repaired the cracks in the front wall, and painted the new ceiling. They also repaired some additional drywall issues in other areas of the house that were left over from water damage.

The end result is great! We had a real problem with drainage on the covered entry to our house. Because of the drainage problems, the wood was rotting and the appearance was quite ugly. Gove Restoration re-designed and re-constructed the covered entry. They redirected the rain water so that it would drain properly. They added gutters to help with the drainage. We're very pleased with the end result. The entry was once and eye-sore and now it is both attractive and functional! The rain water drains just like it should. Additional gutters were replaced on the house.
Description of Work: carpentry: reconstruction of a covered entry on the outside of the house. Replacement of gutters.
A big revelation from this project is: never underestimate the impact of a new coat of paint!! We were not excited about this project because we thought that it would not make a big impact. Boy, were we wrong! The new ceilings, walls, and new paint made a huge improvement to our house! Part of the project included new woodwork & carpentry (door frames, baseboards, chair rails, fireplace mantle/surround). This was another area where we underestimated the impact of the new carpentry. Because of their experience with restoring old homes (our house was built in 1833), they were able to advise style of woodwork that would enhance and complement the style of our house. I was reluctant at first, but they really knew what they were doing! The end result is fabulous and historically accurate. They were meticulous with attention to detail. The name of their company fits their work, "restoration". They restore old homes to their former glory. They don't just renovate or remodel. They truly restore. Part of the benefit in working with Gove Restoration is they start and end the project right on schedule. The project ended within a day of their original estimate. In addition, they clean up at the end of every work day. Their entire team is friendly, customer focused, professional, and a pleasure to work with.

The bathroom turned out great...we love it!! It's nice to have a bathroom on the first floor! Gove Restoration did the complete job (with all the subcontractors). They added walls, new flooring, plumbing, electrical, etc. They were meticulous with their attention to detail. Of course, the whole project started with design work. They were a pleasure to collaborate with. We worked together to design the bathroom, select the location, and determine the style. They helped us to consider many design aspects that we never would have thought of. Because our house was built in 1833, we wanted the design of the bathroom to complement the style of the house. They helped us to consider new ideas to keep the cost down. They also were very clean. They cleaned up at the end of every day so to minimize the frustration with all the construction. Also, they stuck to their schedule and began and ended the project just as promised...they were quick and complete! In addition, the project wasn't done until we were completely satisfied!

From the quote process through completion of the job someone was always available to speak within a moments notice regarding any questions me or my wife had. Gove Restoration did a great job with the exterior painting of our house. Our house was built in 1833, so it had many layers of paint and perhaps some lead paint. They took all the environmental precautions in dealing with the lead paint. The team worked quickly and thoroughly. The finished result is wonderful. In addition, they painted two decks, railings, steps, and doors. The decks & railings were covered with mildew. The decks were washed and the mildew removed. It's amazing how much better it looks!

This is meant to be added to my previous review as I forgot a couple of key points. First of all, project management by Gove was excellent, planning coordination and estimating time and materials. Which gets to my second addition, this complex project came in on time and on budget! It went very well. I am delighted with all the work that was completed. The bathroom is everything I was hoping it would be. Every time I use my back door, I am pleased with how easily the door closes and how great it looks. I am looking forward to a more comfortable winter with my new windows. All permits and permissions from the historical district were obtained by the contractor. Adam and Matt Gove are hands on workers on the project unlike other contractors I had interviewed who hire all subcontractors to complete the job. The Gove's are very detail oriented and make sure every thing is done to a very high standard, like it was their own home that was having the work done too. They kept me apprised of the status of the work, and were very punctual. If decisions had to be made, I was informed of each of the choices and all questions were answered. I have an older home, built in 1922, which could present many challenges and unknowns as walls and floors were opened. The carpentry, painting and tile work done by Gove is excellent. We had trouble with one of the components I had selected for the shower. Adam Gove managed all the trouble shooting with the plumbing supply company, the manufacturer and the plumber. We arrived at a solution that was acceptable to me. I had confidence that I would not be left with an issue due to a part selection I had made. The team operated with a high level of professionalism in daily work and the results show this. I understood the schedule and all work was completed to the schedule. Each day, the house was cleaned up and left in good condition. This work came in on time and on budget which is an excellent testimonial to the excellent project management and estimating skills of the contractor.

Description of Work: Gove totally remodeled my bathroom, installed a new back door, and replaced all the windows in the house.

The craftsmanship and professionalism by Gove Restoration far exceeded my expectations. We had received quotes from several local contractors and we chose Gove Restoration over the rest. Our decision was not based on price as the Gove quote was higher. However, Matt Gove gave us a very detailed estimate showing the scope of work required and it was clear that they pay attention to every detail. With work underway, we were given daily updates on the progress. Unlike previous contractors we used, the Gove team showed up promptly at 8 am and went straight to work. At the end of the day they cleaned up the mess and job site was left spotless. The restoration required the replacement of one of the posts due to rot. However, they were unable to find a match and ended up replacing both posts with a similar style to the old ones at no extra cost. Our porch is now complete and looks fantastic. We are extremely happy with our decision to use Gove Restoration..
Description of Work: Complete restoration of front porch.
We hired Gove Restoration because we own an older home, and knew that the Goves had done historical restoration work in Old Wethersfield, plus, friends there had recommended them. After talking to Matt Gove, I became convinced that the Goves were the right ones for the job because they would be meticulous about preserving the period style and materials to the extent possible, and they would also be scrupulous about making sure all the work was up to code. Matt and Adam Gove were extremely conscientious about supervising and doing the work personally, keeping us informed as to what they were doing, and alerting us to any potential problems that might crop up. It was difficult to coordinate the work of all the subcontractors especially since their respective parts of the job had to be done in a certain order. All of the work was done with admirable precision and care. The plumber was especially good, maybe the best I have ever seen. I especially liked that there was no swearing, no foul talk, no loud radios, no barechested sweaty guys. The entire crew was polite and professional. In fact, I had to spend many days at home preparing lessons and correcting papers, and the work never interfered with my own work, though with just about any other contractor, it would have been a major distraction. Gove Restoration is "the civilized contractor." Matt was ingenious about finding parts and fixtures that would preserve the period style, such as door knobs, handles, or stops, and molding salvaged from what had been dismantled. I was particularly impressed that when the job was done, and I had trouble with the dryer not venting, Matt came over personally to take a look, even though it was unlikely that his part of the work was at fault; rather, it was almost certainly a problem with the appliance itself, which had been modified by service providers from the department store that sold us the dryer so that it would vent out the side instead of the back. Indeed it was the dryer, but Matt found the problem and showed me how to fix it, even though the appliance itself was not his responsibility, and furthermore he charged me nothing for the visit. It is true that Gove Restoration costs a bit more, but in the long run, you will probably save money because the work will not have to be done again, as is often the case with mediocre contractors who are, moreover, often careless about making sure their work is up to code, causing problems later on. But Matt was great working with the city inspector, and kept him informed the entire time, so that the final inspection went off without a hitch. The new room is so beautifully done, and so much in conformity with the historical style of the house, that I have trouble remembering what it looked like before the renovation. It is true that the work ended up costing more than originally estimated, but that was because we ourselves made changes three times to the original order, asking additional work to be done. That, and some special circumstances such as delays in delivery of the custom-made double doors on which all the other work depended, did cause the job to take longer than anticipated, but I will gladly trade a few delays to get work done as splendidly as they did it. The Goves truly take pride in the quality of the work they do, and are impatient with sloppy craftsmanship. It is not just carpentry, but art!
Description of Work: The job we hired Gove Restoration to perform was complicated. We asked them to knock down the wall between the pantry and mud room/half bath to make one large combined utility room and half bath, and in so doing replace the two separate doors leading into the kitchen with one wide double door, which had to be custom-made. This made for a more spacious kitchen space that could be expanded into the utility room when the double doors were opened. They had to move the toilet, sink, and bathroom vanity/cabinet, lay down a new wood floor in the expanded room, sand and finish it, and then sand and finish the adjoining kitchen floor to make them uniform. The washer and dryer outlets had to be moved from an outer to an inner wall, and the outlet for the dryer vent moved. Finally, the electric subpanel in the mud room had to be moved downstairs to the basement, and new light fixtures installed. The Goves had to coordinate the work of several subcontractors, someone to install drywall, a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter to make the double doors, and someone to sand and finish the hardwood floors. The plumbing was especially complicated because shifts in the positions of the plumbing fixtures required the pipes to be routed around the pipe running upstairs from the oil tank in the basement to the ground floor. New molding had to be installed in the new room, and the new utility/half-bath as well as the entire kitchen repainted.

Their customer service is much better than the other nine contractors. They were the only ones that are professional and got back to me to give the estimates. I am very happy. They seem to know what they were doing. They've been great.
Description of Work: Gove Restoration Inc. gave me an estimate for my structural issue. He recommended an engineer whereas other contractor just took their best guess. He provided a plan to secure the beam and ceiling of the living, kitchen and dining room.
