+ 1 moreLeo was a professional and easy to work with---he was not the cheapest, but I found him to be unfront and fair and offering ultimately the best price for the money. His crew worked hard and were very thorough----whenever there was an issue or question it was always easy to reach Leo and get the situation resolved. Near the end of the job one window, for instance, got broken by his crew and Leo showed up the next day, a Sunday, to be sure it was repaired and properly restored. At no time did I wonder about either the quality or the pace of his work. He finished the entire job on time and our home looks beautiful!! I am most happy to recommend Leo and Excalibur to my best friends.

+ 1 moreHis team was courteous, on time and generally neat. Leo is very attentive, customer-service oriented, thoughtful and gives good advice before, during and after the job. He was very helpful in choosing the right color for the house as well. I can't remember the last time I had this much confidence in a contractor - we genuinely liked him. He is hard working and honest, and really knows his stuff. In fact, he noticed our yard shed that had seen better days. He asked us what we were going to do about it, and we told him that we were looking into replacing it. He pointed out that the structure was solid and that he could restore it - eliminating the need for a new one. So as a smaller, add-on job, his crew fixed the hole in the shed roof, re-roofed the entire shed, replaced rotting wood, and reparied the doors, and then painted it. Our shed looks like new, at half the cost of replacing it.
Description of Work: We originally called Leo to talk about painting the exterior of our home. When he arrived, he told us he would be happy to help us with that, but pointed out the the roof needed attention first. Of course he was right - we had been hoping to put off the inevitable for a bit longer, but Leo quickly indicated spots that concerned him. We talked about the roof and also the paniting that needed to be done - this job wasn't going to be a straight painting job, either. We live in a 100 year old house that was neglected for decades, and are restoring it as we go along. The paint job required reframing over 95% of our custom-build wroungt iron original windows, and reglazing the antique panes. We had another painter/carpenter try fixing the window as a test, with disastrous results. Leo had demonstrable experience restoring period homes, and made us feel confident he would be able to help us. When it came to assessing the roof work, we have never experienced such detail-orientation and thoroughness. Our roof is unusually steep-pitched. Other roofers assessed and estimated the job from the ground. Not Leo. He climbed up, poked around, and spent a good deal of time inspecting the situation before calculating his estimate. We hired him to handle the roof, the window frame repairs and windo reglazing, and the exterior painting. The estimate price was extremely competitive for all the work and details that needed to be done. There were 3 layers of questionable roofing materials to be removed, down to the rafters - there was no wood underneath. He installed plywood and soffet, and then asphalt shingles. Before painting, he powerwashed the house, and repaired any rotting wood (besides the window frames). Our neighbor who is a professional carpenter remarked on the detail and skill being applied to our house - he asked for Leo's contact info. He wanted to pass the info along to his wife, a realtor, for her own home-buying clients.

+ 9 moreWell, Leo has done it again. He took my tiny, old, tired bathroom and created a soothing oasis of calm. The old bathroom (wish I had thought to take "before" photos) didn't have any room to move because of very poor space planning. I wasn't sure if much of anything could be done to make the space usable - but Leo worked his magic and now the bathroom is beautiful! Since this was the master bathroom, we decided to paint the master bedroom, add crown moulding and refinish the floor at the same time. Old houses always have more than meets the eye and true to form, while painting the ceiling Leo discovered that we had a leak in the roof. Fortunately he was able to fix the problem and complete the job. I will never use anyone but Excalibur Construction!

+ 4 moreLeo Penuela of Excalibur is truly impressive. From his first visit to the house, to give us an estimate, he was thoughtful and straightforward and responsible. He made every effort to be certain we understood what needed to be done and how he planned to do it. Negotiations to set up the job were complicated because the demands of the job were extreme. He remained flexible and responsive. Once he and his crew began work, he also made sure there was someone for us to talk to when problems arose. He supervised his (4?) workers very carefully. The job was finished in good time, despite the hurricane. They even did a quick paint job (not in the contract!) in the basement bathroom, where replacing the window had unavoidably messed up one wall. And the garage, where paint and tools had been stored throughout the weeks of work, was much cleaner after they left than it had been before. We're frankly fussy but we can't find fault with the work that was done. A month later, we're still receiving compliments from strangers on the results.

+ 2 moreLeo, who runs Excalibur, quickly came out to look at the job, going up onto a third floor roof to see exactly what was needed. His quote was not the very lowest but I had the most confidence in it because he had inspected the job so thoroughly and detailed exactly what was needed and why. I was confident that he understood well what was required and wouldn't revise the quote halfway through the job. He and his crew did the job quickly and expertly. It has held up well, including making it through Hurricane Sandy with not one drop. Over the course of the job, there was a good deal of going back and forth deciding exactly what kind of replacement skylight was needed. Throughout the entire process, Leo was patient, flexible and knowledgeable.

+ 1 moreLeo and his team removed the wooden clapboard siding from around the tower and discovered that there was more than just damage to the window ledges - we had carpenter ants and also a great deal of water damage that also needed to be repaired. The support beams, both horizontal and vertical, in one corner of the tower were mostly destroyed and needed to be replaced. Leo jacked up the house in order to replace the damaged wood and then carefully and with great attention to detail replaced the original clapboard and replaced window ledges along with the decorative trim that had suffered from water damage over the years. Now it is impossible to determine what is original and what is not - and it looks beautiful! After repairing the damage, the tower was primed and painted to match the rest of the house. Throughout the process there weren't any nails or boards left around, areas without siding were covered at the end of every day - whether or not rain was forecast. After the job was done, a crew thoroughly cleaned up and raked the planting beds around the tower. I am very happy with the work that Excalibur Construction has done so far and I still have a "to-do" list for Leo to quote for me.
Description of Work: Leo and his team was hired to restored the window ledges and decorative trim and paint around the tower of our Victorian-era home. There was quite a bit of damage uncovered once the old wooden clapboard came off and repair of the support beams was also necessary due to damage from both water and carpenter ants.

Description of Work: Leo was wonderful to work with, very knowledgeable and very professional. My antique house needed a new bathroom and Leo handled everything from gutting the room to the finishing touches. Old houses are usually full of problems and this one was no exception – Leo found the existing plumbing and electrical work to be substandard and actually dangerous and he fixed it all. So, not only is my bathroom beautiful, it’s up to code. He and his team are very neat and my house never looked like a work zone. All stairs and furniture were covered to ensure the dust from the demolition didn’t go everywhere and every evening when they left everything was picked up and put away neatly. I would not hesitate to recommend Leo, his work is meticulous – in fact I’ve already given him a list of additional projects to quote for me!

The house is located on a very small lot and there is not much room to manuever a dumpster.The roofing crew started removing shingles. They were very organized and they cleaned up after themselves each day before they left the job.We requested that the pressboard be replaced with 3/4 inch plywood. This was done and it looks great from inside the attic.The shingles were the ones we had requested. They did a wonderful job replacing them. There are three picture windows that needed to be shingled and this was also completed.It took about one week to complete the roof. The crew was great and worked in freezing cold weather. We are extremely happy with our roof. No more leaks!We have gotten many compliments about the roof from our neighbors.Leonardo paid close attention to detail and did excellent work.We plan to use this company again when we replace our vinyl siding, and we highly recommend Excalibur Construction.

We were initially hesitant due to his distance from us and we almost went with someone else, but after speaking to his references and considering his price was better than most of our other offers, we decided to take the chance and we do not regret it. Leo came out for the initial estimate and then again to finalize the contract. He was a little late (about 1/2 hr if I remember) for the appointments, but once they started work, the crew was right on time. The written estimate was fair and Leo accomodated my requests to add more details and specific requests in the final contract. These guys are some of the most efficient and hardest working people I've met. They all knew exactly where they needed to be at all times and we were shocked at how quickly they had our roof replaced. They were courteous and professional and very skilled at their craft. Our new roof looks gorgeous and I am confident it will last for many years. I highly recommend Leo and his crew.
Description of Work: Full tear down on a 1920's steep pitched roof w/ a dormer. We had the original wood shingles and two layers of asphalt that had to be removed, followed by installing new plywood and high quality roofing material. The crew completed the entire job, including a very thorough cleanup, in two days (plus one day in between because of rain). They are in the process of painting the exterior of our home and I will write a followup review once that is complete.
