Very pleased with all steps including: proposal description, pricing conforms to guidelines from national roofing contractor association, high quality workmanship, cleanliness and full satisfaction.
Description of Work: My roof on contemporary house was repaired by an earlier contractor during the addition on the house in 1994. Due to the poor workmanship and bad shingles roof has deteriorated (shingle curling etc) with leaking through the roof. This year I have decided to repair the roof with special emphasis on quality of the workmanship and material used. As an engineer i tried to do a detail study and comparison between several roofing service providers. Through Angie's List and by the other electronic "spying" during my initial research on roof repairs with internet. I have received six different estimate from large national home repair company and local contractors. Primarily based on detail work description and material used (shingles, ice barrier, underlayer, flushing, edging, sealing) i have narrowed my selection to the three local contractor that were recommended by Angie's List. In the second phase I have compared pricing and schedule. In these two categories MJ Roofing come up with flying colors. They proposed the lower price and shortest schedule. Removal of two and one layer of the old roof, repair of damaged plywood, and chimney repair, with other modification to overcome mistakes that earlier contractor made during the remodeling and roof repairs. All of this in ONE DAY. MJ Roofing was known to my town building inspector and they easily obtained the permit for roof repair. Work was scheduled in approximately two weeks following contract signature. Week before work began I received a call from Jason, owner and team leader, that work is scheduled for next weekday to start around 8 am. At the scheduled day I was surprised when my door bell rang at 7:55 am with Jason at the door and his crew dressed in very neat and nice looking company uniforms with all OSHA (government agency regulating safe work environment) required protective equipment (safety shoe, safety glasses, ear protection, protective gloves, etc. They come up with the tool trailer with personal hygiene facility for the crew, and dump trick for old shingles and other waste from the old roof. Work has started immediately and crew of six roofers with two foreman (Jason was one of them) removed old roof, and chimney flashing, repaired damaged plywood and installed new roof per earlier provided specification in record time. They were completed by 3:30 pm, including detail cleaning of all gutters and yard around the house with hand picking and magnetic sweepers. My roof is relatively common size on family home of 3000 sqf . I was present through , removal of the old roof, repairs, and new roof installation and was very pleased with high professionalism and pride that team took to do all the work. Jason detail explained every repair and required modifications and convinced me, with my independent verification, that this time I can be sure to have sound roof above my head. Aesthetically all the workmanship was very nicely done and I was so pleased that have forget to ask for standard Angie's List discount. I did trow the $ 500.00 coupon convinced that the MJ Roofing deserve this bonus from me, based on lowest price, high quality workmanship, and limited lifetime warranty. This family company "MJ Roofing" is in the business, for several decades, is reputable with my town building inspector, and has a high review scores on Angie's List, together with truthful impression and passion that Jason protrudes when he discusses workmanship and company history started by his father immigrant from Europe , I am convinced that this major home repair was performed at full satisfaction with proper piece of mind for me on the roof future. Jason called a few days in advance to confirm the work date. They arrived early and immediately began to work. They have a team of 7+ men that you can tell they know what needs to get done and do it. There were tarps placed all around the house to gather any debris that didn't make it into the truck. Jason hung around for the first part of the day and explained everything the crew was doing. The only break that was taken was for lunch. The crew had completed the job including cleanup by 3 pm. If you didn't see the crew working on my house, you would never had known I had work done. The yard was cleaner than before they started. These are highly skilled and very professional trades people. I would strongly recommend them.
Description of Work: Removed existing shingles, damaged chimney and broken attic fan. Installed ice guard for first 6 feet and felt paper for remaining roof; replaced all damaged plywood; installed new shingles; built new chimney with flashing; and installed new attic fan. Removed all debris.

See above.I absolutely will hire them for future roofing work.
Description of Work: At recommendation of Angie's List reports, I asked for an assessment of potential water damage on a joined roof seam from last winter's ice dams. After some general questions to me, Jason tested the interior for waterf - and it was bone dry. Did NOT try to sell me work I didn't need, and he indicated that the outside replacement of shingles can wait the two years whenI can afford to fre-do the exterior of my home. Honest professionals - who knew!!?!

We called M&J because of excess moisture in an attic space. Jason came to inspect the space, and determine how we could fix the problem. He suggested we have an attic fan installed. We sat and went over what was neccesary to correct this problem, and how much it was goning to cost. What a difference it's made not only did it rectify our problem, it has also helped to make our home much cooler. My experience went very smoothly, he did his work in a timely mannor, came prepared to do the job, and tolaly cleaned up after he was done. It was a pleasure working with him. I would definately hire him again, and would reccomend him to anyone needing roofing & gutters done .

Jason provided a thorough explanation of his quote, which was completely in line with the insurance claim I had received to replace the roof. Many of the other quotes I received were several thousand dollars more than the insurance appraisal. I appreciated the fact that M&J weren't offering any gimmicks or sales tricks to get business. Jason was professional, friendly and trustworthy. He informed me up front what their work load was, so I had an idea of how soon they could begin the work ,if I selected his company for the job. He left me with a sample book of shingle colors so that I could spend some time picking the best color. When I gave him the contract, he told me he'd contact me within two weeks to schedule the install date. Once the date was fixed, the team showed up right on time. Shock and Awe! They hit the ground, or should I say roof, and don't stop till they are finished. I was amazed at how quickly it all went down, so were my neighbors! They have a team of 7+ men, who work like a well oiled machine. Louie is the onsite supervisor. He kept me informed and was available to answer any questions during the day. Their team is well organized, courteous, meticulous, efficient and produce high quality results. It was clear that the crew had their work assignments, and worked in a coordinated manner throughout the entire process of stripping, installing, and cleaning up. They started at 8am and by 3pm they were gone, my yard was cleaner than when they arrived! They bring their own dump truck on site for waste disposal which worked out great, since I didn't have a good spot to put a dumpster. I highly recommend M&J. It was clear to me that from the owners down to the crew, everyone takes pride in their work and are focused on customer satisfaction and quality results.
Description of Work: Provided estimate for complete roof replacement on a 1930's Cape. Stripped off existing shingles down to sub roof. Installed ice/water barrier and new GAF shingles. They replaced kitchen vent, stack and chimney flashing with lead flashing. Completely cleaned up after job.

The real plus with this company is that they can service both these areas with no issues. Jason did the initial estimate and communicated exactly what repairs would be needed, and the process they would go through. The actual repairs were done a couple of weeks later in a prompt and timely manner. New flashing and sealing all around the chimney. New cricket built and shingled. Chimney also sealed afterwords .Excellent work, looks great. Clean up was very thorough, not a trace of old shingles/chimney pieces to be seen.I especially liked the fact that Jason summarized the work done in great detail afterwords, including the lifespan of all the materials used, and procedures to to keep everything in good shape year after year. Nice job guys!
Description of Work: This company did a fine job with a two phase job...which included chimney/flashing repair and shingle/roofing repair.

Very professional. Called a couple of days before to confirm start date. Arrived as scheduled and immediately begain to work. Only break that was taken was for lunch. At end of day 1 all removed roofing was placed in their dump truck and the total area was cleaned. On day 2 they finished the job and requested that I inspect all work that was done. Again, all roofing debris was placed into their truck and the entire yard area was checked multiple times with a large "wheeled" magnet to assure that no roofing nails remained. Left 1 remaining bundle of shingles so that I would have them should their ever be a need for a minor repair
Description of Work: Removed exisiting shingles & felt paper. Installed ice guard for first 6 feet and felt paper for remaining roof. Replace one sheet of damaged plywood. Replaced all ventilated drip edge. Installed 42 squares of new shingles and all new flashing. Removed and replaced an existing skylight. Removed all debris.

Every aspect of their work was done perfectly. Jason (one of two owners) provided the initial estimate. He was exactly on time and returned when I was getting ready to sign to explain all the details of the contract and work. He was at the low end of four proposals I received. Once the contract was signed, he scheduled the work within 10 days. A crew of 7 arrived on a Saturday morning at 7:30 am and worked (with only a fifteen minute lunch) until the work was complete at 4pm. The two owners were part of the crew. They all wore uniforms and their equipment looked top notch. They put tarps along the house to collect debris and the yard was spotless when they were done. These are highly skilled and very professional trades people. I would strongly recommend them.

I highly recommend this company! Jason responded immediately to my call for an estimate for repairs and showed up the next day to provide the estimate. I was impressed by the fact that he did not recommend repairs that were not necessary and suggested recycling of bricks, if possible. Although he initially gave me a two week time frame for the repairs, I did not hear from him within that time frame. However, when I called to check on the status of the job, he told me he would be there the next day to complete the job. He arrived as promised, completed the work efficiently, and the work area was left spotless! Very pleased wtih his work and professionalism and would definitely hire him again.

The team came in like gangbusters and had the roofing job done, start to finish, in about 7 hrs. The chimney took about two half days because of the time it needed to dry before they could start on the roof. They left the lawn and gardens near the house looking more groomed than they did before they arrived.
Description of Work: M&J took off the old, double-layer roofing down to the plywood, replaced a small patch of plywood damage from this past winter's ice dams, and completely replaced the roof. They also took the chimney down to the roof, replaced the double flue, and rebuilt the chimney, finishing it off with a baronial brick chimney cap with blue stone on top. Everything looks spectacular. I can't say enough good things about Jason, Louie, and their team. They are professional, knowledgeable, conscientious, efficent, tidy, and above all very pleasant.

Jason came out initially and gave us an estimate for the work. This estimate proved to be exactly the cost of the work done, despite the fact that their supplier sent the wrong architectural shingles (which were 50-year shingles versus the 30-year shings we had contracted for). Since they were half way through putting the 50-year shingles on the roof before they realized the mistake their supplier had made, they completed the roof with the better shingles and even gave us a warranty for the 50-year shingles at no added expense to us. We could not believe how hard these guys worked. They completed our (large) roof project in two long days--as promised--and cleaned up after themselves meticulously. Jason and his brother (who was foreman for the work on the roof) are personable and responsive to customer requests, and are also very safety conscious. Their crew was respectful and extremely hard working. Since having the roof put on in November, we have been through the winter of 2010 which meant considerably snow and ice pileup on the new roof. We have had no problems with it whatsoever. When we did have some gutter guard covers break loose with the snow and ice, Jason and several of his crew immediately came to our home and repaired the damage. They guarantee their work--and stand by their guarantee.
Description of Work: We hired this company to put a new roof on our home with architectural shingles. Our roof has complex angles and many steep contours. We went with them because of their strong recommendations on Angie's List and because we felt the price estimate they gave us was very reasonable for the work done. We also liked the pride they obviously took in their work, and the fact that what they described doing in our roofing project was better than what other companies offered.

He had very good ratings on Angie's list. On our property we have our house and a carriage house. So when we had our roof and the chimney done, the carriage house needed to be re pointed and the chimney on our house needed to be rebuilt. They did a very thorough job on the roofing as did on the chimney as well. They did it very quickly and I was amazed how fast they worked. They did a very excellent job on both houses. They guy who came out to do the estimate visited us a couple of times before we actually sealed the deal. He seemed very knowledgeable about roofing and chimney works. We had a mason that they had employed who does chimney works for them. He also gave us lots of references so we literally drove to various towns and numerous homes that he had done. The other thing we really liked about this company was he had lot of works on old houses. Old houses are very different from new construction. He seemed to a really follow the problems of people having old homes. He is sensitive and aware of the different problems concern with old houses. I wasn't actually here when he was doing the work, I was out of the country at that time, but my husband was here and we were communicating during the whole project. I take my husband's word for it he did a very excellent job. He did an excellent job of cleanup around the property never left anything and there were tones of the debris on the property. He did very good cleanup and excellent work. The price wasn't significantly less than other contractors, but it was a little bit less and seemed to have better knowledge than the others that we had quotes from.

Jason came to give us an estimate the day after we called. He was very professional and explained everything that needed to be done to prevent the leaks we had over the winter. He did not suggest we put in a whole new roof, but instead, indicated the roof was in good condition and just needed some areas replaced. Since we needed an ice and water barrier, we needed warm weather before he could proceed. Jason knew we had additional work to be done and it couldn't be started until the roof was finished, so as soon as we had a warm day, which happened to be on a Saturday, he phoned and said he would be here. While repairing the roof, he discovered that our main chimney was in very poor condition, so he gave us a very fair price to have that rebuilt. He not only did that on Sunday, but he even thought to use brick that would complement the character of our old carriage house. Both Jason and his brother came by several times while the work was being done to check on the progress and be sure everything was being installed properly. They could not have been nicer. I would recommend them to anyone. I just wish I knew someone now who needs a new roof.
Description of Work: Jason replaced a large portion of our roof and installed an ice and water shield to prevent leaks. He also rebuilt our main chimney which was in dismal condition.

The crew arrived on time started working within 10minutes and then worked for apprx 10 hrs and was kept informed of progress and the need to replace plywood on dormers[which was stipulated in contract]Jason said job would take 2 days ,it actually took less than a day and a half.I paid in full after completion and was told someone would return next week to check on everything which they did yesterday.I have used several different contractors in the past 2 years none as outstanding as Jason and his crew.I would give them a rating of A+
Description of Work: Jason came in feb with 4 feet of snow on ground to give an estimate for roof replacement, which he gave me after measuring sq footage[ a plus for me ,usually have to wait to get estimates] I signed contract and didn't have to give a deposit!!Received a call in March to schedule start date

See above. I was especially pleased by the exceptional response to my phone call and the fact that the services provided were free.
Description of Work: After awaking this morning to a virtual 'waterfall' in both our upstairs guest room and den below, I called M & J Roofing who replaced our roof a little over a year ago. The brother of the owner came here 2-3 hours later and cleaned off the section of the roof and gutter that was causing the problem, i.e., ice build up. He applied salt to all surfaces and the 'waterfall' stopped within minutes.

Set up an appointment for an estimate. . MJ Services promptly arrived and provided assessment of current state of roof, chimney and skylights.. Roof was original from when house was built. They brought roofing samples along with examples of other jobs they have done. MJ recommended completely removing old roof and rebuilding chimney. Luckily we decided to do that as the contractor did not install roofing felt under the shingles nor was ice and rain barrier installed and the chimney mortar was eroding. Skylights were old so we replaced as well. On the first day MJ arrived and worked to remove the roof and rebuilt the chimney. They worked hard from arrival time around 7:30 to dark removing the old roof, inspecting the sheathing and installing ice and rain barrier while another team rebuilt the chimney. Louie, the MJ supervisor on site, made sure that I knew what was being done and what their plans were for the day. He took pride in explaining how they ensure proper workmanship and want to do it right. I watched them as they installed a new skylight. They used ice and rain barrier around the entire skylight and roof where skylight was installed. They then installed shingles and flashing. The second day began at same time and they finished early. They cleaned up to my satisfaction and even offered to remove some scrap I had from redoing my bathroom. They definitely went above and beyond and I recommend them to anyone to who wants it done right.

Jason came out at a time convenient for me for the estimate . He was thorough , patient with my many questions , and forwarded info that I as a homeowner appreciated . I accepted the estimate , which was to include stripping 2 layers of shingle , addressing some soft spots of plywood , and checking into some areas where I feared that there was no flashing originally installed. We agreed on a tentative date for work . The week before the day given , Jason calls and says we'll go for the day before the one originally given , to work with the weather . This was fine . The day of repair , Jason shows up with his brother Louis , and a crew of 4 in tow , a truck with materials (also for debris) , and a truck with a generator for the pnuematic equipment . Tarps were put up , nailed to the sides of the house to capture and direct trash and nails from the roof . When trouble spots were assessed , Louis , who was lead for most of the day , did not have a problem with my asking to come up and look at what possible damage might exist within the framing of my home . He provided an alternative frame-out to an addition that was problematic from the prior owners , sealing up a breech spot for water that had been there by design . I had been holding off on a back porch roof that I had been doing some patch work on , and they gave me an on-the-spot estimate to finish what I had begun while they were there. They added flashing to the areas that didn't have them , and were courteous enough to ask me first , because this would mean taking down vinyl siding that I would have to repair later . I was of course okay with this , the missing flashing being the main reason for our wanting the job done to begin with . They reflashed the chimney and stack , and replaced my old worn vinyl gutter covers with screwed on stainless protectors for a modest add-on fee. The one thing that didn't work out was that someone , while doing maintenence to the mechanical shingle lift that attaches to a ladder , didn't put the oil/fuel cap on tight , and the plug and mix blew out all over my side porch , soaking into my wood , cement steps , and siding . Obviously a human error , and Louis took steps to clean the vinyl immediately , and tried to clean my porch . I was kinda bummed that something went wrong , but Louis was very apologetic , and gave me a break on the gutter job . They left my house almost spotless , raking stray tar paper and shingles up , and using a magnetic roller in my yard to snag nails and other metals . I only found a dozen or so nails , but my yard and grounds next to my home are very unkempt , with clay underneath to hug any that were stepped on , and I don't hold it against them . Louis even added fire and ice to where the vinyl siding had to come off , so that I would have some time to get the siding job done without worrying about the exposed wood . I am very happy with the job done . I have since been up on my roof ... I might add a bit more of the black caulk used to seal the addition peaks where they meet the existing home , I could see bits of plywood exposed when I was replacing siding , ( not easy to see from the angle the caulk was applied from ! ) I highly recommend these guys , they are prompt , courteous , and efficient . Arrived at 8 a.m. , left around 3:30 p.m. . They took a mid morning break , 15-20 minutes , but did not take a lunch break . They fielded all of my questions and note-taking in stride , and tolerated my video camera every 10-15 minutes or so . I did provide home current for some of their power tools . Thank you Angies List ! : ))
Description of Work: Roof was stripped of 2 layers of shingles , approximately 2 sheets worth of plywood were used to patch weak spots that were cut out , flashing was added to an addition that was missing it (!) , addition length was adjusted at top to close gap for snug shingle fit . Fire and Ice used where appropriate . GAF 30 year used . Ridgevent added . Flashing redone (including lead work around chimney) and stack . Small Cape job , 1961. Back porch roof also addressed . Gutters tightened up , new leaf guards installed .All trash removed . 5 year warranty on labor , 30 year on materials .

Very timely with scheduling a meeting with me to review the job. Jason was very informative explaining all details of the work answering my questions. The estimate was competitive and all inclusive. The work was scheduled quickly and was very accommodating to my schedule. The work team did an outstanding job completing in one day and the clean up was excellent. I was extremely impressed with the service of M&J Roofing.
Description of Work: The work included removing the old roof and installing a new one.

To preface this, we are 2 older women and have had disatrous and very expensive results with other contractors in the past. I had heard of Angies list and felt that it was worth the fee in light of the major expense we were facing and our prior poor track record with home repairs. It was WELL worth the membership. We had gotten 3 previous estimates from local roofers that were rated A+ by the better business bureau. We found M-J roofers also highly rated on Better Business Bureau and Angie's list and called for their estimate. One of the owners responded within a few days and gave us an estimate that day. He included a copy of his contractor license and certificate of liability insurance. He "toured" the roof with us and we showed him many of the concerns we had after we had reviewed these over several months with our neighbor who is a retired roofer. The owner of M-J Roofing was courteous and most importantly respected our input. He did not talk down to us and agreed with our comments and concerns. He assurred us that our major problems would be repaired and he proposed what it what it would likely require and how he would do the work. M-J's estimate came in $10,000-15,000 LOWER than the other 3 estimates and was "FIRM". (The other roofing contractors would NOT give us a firm price and included an "open ended contract" in the event they "found problems." The other roofing companies estimated the job would take 7-14 days!!) M-J roofing told us the job would be completed in 3-4 days, as they would not do other jobs in between because "each job had their full priority". The owner assured us that either he or both he and his brother would be on the job from start to finish and we did not have to pay them until we were completely satisfied with the work. I was concerned about certain points that were not in the initial contract but which he had verbally agreed to address and wrote these as an addendum to the contract. The owner signed and dated this addendum and again reassured us that it would be "beautiful" and we would be pleased with the work. He would not accept any downpayment. The roofing supplies arrived a few days before the start date. On the agreed start day, he and his brother and a 5 man crew arrived as promised just before 7AM and immediately began to place tarps to protect our bushes and surrounding greenery. I have never seen a crew work harder. By the end of Day 1 the main house roof was removed totally, the old chimney taken down and the plywood, fiberglass underlayer and a good portion of shingles were already placed. The brothers who own M-J were on the roof figuring out the dormer j-channel problems because when the 3 layers of existing roof were removed, the siding was high up on the dormers and so they were working on wrapping this area themselves. The next day the crew plus owners again arrived shortly before 7AM and proceeded to complete the main house roof and then began stripping the 2 additions. This day they uncovered an unforseen problem created by the old tie in of the previous addition to the main house done some 30+ years ago. It was poorly wrapped and improperly constructed and there had been an unforeseen slow leak that ruined the plywood in this area and needed additional repair to include replacement of a rotting board and more new plywood as well as new wrapping to exend up under the siding to prevent future leaks. This was all repaired as well as the leaking seam of the other area of the second addition which we had previously anticipated as a problem. By late afternoon of day 3, they were cleaning up and the owner was reviewing what was done and touring the work site with us to see if we were satisfied. A few shrubs did have some branches broken and we are still picking up some debris and nails with our magnet, but this is minor. They did just what they said they would do and even a little more. 2 days later when we had a chance to take a long view of the work, we didn't like the way that j-channel of the 3 dormers looked from the street. We called one of the owner's and he came by within 1/2 an hour. We went to the attic with him and looked out to show him what appeared to be a gap from the street. In fact it wasn't but he agreed that it could appear to be and would return in a few days with some siding material to bend and try to improve the appearance but assured us it would not leak. He admitted that siding repair was not his expertise but he would do his best to create a better visual view from below. He returned within a few days as promised and worked on it that day until we were satisfied. It is not perfect, but the problem goes back to the original siding application which was installed after the third layer of the original roof was already in place. I can only say overall, they were extremely hard working, polite, kept to the contract and their word and were most pleasant and courteous at every step of the way. The house does indeed look beautiful and neighbors have asked us for "our roofers" number in the weeks since. We saved at least $10-15000 and lots of aggravation. We dreaded this job for 2 years - thanks to Angie's list we have NO regrets!. We HIGHLY recommend M-J Roofing.
Description of Work: M-J Roofing Service, LLC, 103 Union City Road, Prospect Connecticut. (203)754-3820 90 year old 2-story center colonial house with 3 dormers -They obtained work permit from the town. Performed COMPLETE TEAR OFF of 3 layers of roof -consisting of 2 layers of wooden shingles and asphault shingles on top of that - new 1/2" plywood placed with fiberglass reinforced roofing select underlayer with 6 feet of ice and water barrier at eaves, valleys, skylight and chimnies. GAF 30 year warranty architectural shingles (to match shingles of out building - Barn) applied per CT high wind building code. Alluminum premier edging at roof perimeters. Included tear off of 2 smaller roof additions to the house, one with leaking seam attachment and another one needing new plywood also after they found an unexpected area that had been leaking slowly - poorly constructed and apparently had been covered over many years ago and not up to code. Repaired and replaced all plywood and structure up to code. Removed center old brick chimney from main roof to below the roof line and applied lead conterflashing around 2 other functioning existing chimnies. Applied ridgevent to main house and additions. Removed 2 old vents and replaced them and applied new vent pipe boots to others and painted them to match roof color. Re-attached all existing lightning rods. The complete tear off resulted in problems with height of siding on dormers leaving areas exposed. Repaired and reflashed those areas to prevent leak. Cleaned up and removed all roofing debris from gutters and property. A few days after the job was completed, we did not like the way the area of the dormers looked from the street, so we called the owner and he came within 1/2 hour to inspect it, proposed a realistic plan to bend new siding to repair it to the best of his expertise and returned within 1 week as promised to complete the job. Gave us 5 years labor warranty in addition to manufacturer and shingle warranty.

The company is owned and two brothers, Jason and Louis. They were very timely coming to give us an estimate. The price was very fair. They gave us an approximate date they could do the work, and they were right in the ballpark. The day they came to do the work, they had an 8-man crew and they were very professional and very hard working. This was not a small job, but they completed it in one day. They were very conscientious about cleaning up afterwards as well. And the final price did not exceed what they gave as an original estimate. I was very impressed and would definitely recommend this company.

When the owner arrived for the estimate he immediately handed me a folder with his license and insurance information, which I found incredibly professional. That was the level of service that remained throughout the entire project - straightforward, no-nonsense, and trustworthy. The morning of the job they arrived at exactly 7:30am and were tearing off the roof by 7:40am. They brought their own dump truck, so there was no unsightly dumpster in the driveway. The workers completed the roof by 4:00, which was quite expedient, and the end product was great. They cleaned up the property thoroughly and left it better than they found it. I would highly recommend M & J Roofing to anyone shopping for a new roof.
