They showed up as promised, worked hard, and cleaned up after themselves. They were very receptive, flexible, and creative in designing the walls to meet our specific needs, such as protecting our shrubs and giving us access to a very high outdoor faucet. I wouldn't hesitate to call them if I ever need masonry work done again.
Description of Work: Ripped out the old wooden retaining walls and replaced with stone walls and cement stairs on either side of our lower level doors.

I have a stucco house and had a couple areas where it was cracked and bulging (which, if you have a stucco house, you are very familiar with). I have had these same areas repaired twice in the past since I have lived there. I had Alex come out and evaluate the areas, he gave me an estimate and I had them to do the work. He was very responsible, friendly, did exactly what we agreed on, and was very good communicating when he was coming, the work to be done, etc. As I mentioned, I've had these type of repairs done before and this has by far been my best experience and the first time I thought the person knew what they were doing. He works with his father who came by prior to the job to look at it also. I would definitely use Alex Masonry again (and considering my house needs continuous maintenance, I'm sure I'll be calling him again next year for the latest area that needs attention!)

I have never been happier. I went back and forth because of pricing. It was a big project. Another contractor told me how he could fix a particular "bad" spot. I inquired about the same issue with Alex, he said that he would not to the particular task because he knew that I would not be happy with the outcome, and that it would only be a fix. He explained that the brick was old and brittle, cutting and resetting would only make it weaker. He showed me several pictures and styles. Also, gave me several addresses in the area where we could see the work that they have completed. I told him that I needed time to think, he had no problem at all...NOT PUSHY! When I did decide, he and his father came by to show me some samples, I wanted to make sure that my husband also liked it, this was his third trip from Waterbury, no qualms about it. They are clean and concise. They hit a snag with getting some of the pavers, they made up for time the next day by staying late. I love my new sidewalk and steps!!

Alex and his crew did a fantastic job! I recommend them without reservation. When you contract with this company, you get quality materials, quality workmanship with a smile. They arrived on schedule every day and worked until evening. There was a crew of Alex, his father, and two to three other men. I never saw any guys work this hard continually throughout the day. They cleaned up every night. The father and son who own and work on the job are the nicest guys. They listened to what we wanted to have done and offered suggestions to address our needs. The father is a perfectionist (in the nicest sense of the word). He cares about how the work is done and is not happy unless the work is done to his high standards. He and his son are a pleasure to work with. They are courteous, affable and kind and open to any suggestion or change you might want to make. They go out of their way to make you a happy customer. During the winter snow season, the town snow plow ripped two of the Belgium blocks from my driveway. Alex and his son, returned to fix the area, without charge. They also helped an elder neighbor with work she needed. I wish I could show you pictures of the work that was done. The steps and walkway look superb. I continually get compliments from visitors on the excellent appearance of the steps, walkway and retaining wall. When I enter my house now, I feel proud of how it looks. The poured concrete patio in the backyard made a messy area look clean. I would get mold on the ground in this area because rain water sank into the ground. Alex tapered the concrete to make water run off the area into a drain. The workmen also moved a small shed I had in this area to another part of the yard. The concrete poured in September still looks like new in July. At my request, they moved the old flagstone I had for my front walkway to an area in the back of the house. I can't say enough good things about Alex Masonry. I have no complaints about them. You can't go wrong if you use them.
Description of Work: Redid my concrete front steps and front walkway with Laredo Stone and Blue Stone 1 1/2 inch tread depth. Rebuilt small retaining wall in front of house with stones and concrete. Placed stone along the front of the house. In the back of the house, dug out and poured concrete patio. Lined my drive with Belgium blocks cemented together.

Alex Masonry started on time and finished on time. They appraised me of the work every step of the way. They did everything I requested. Results were better than expected. They cleaned up after the work was completed. Extremely hard working and completely professional.
Description of Work: Extensive structural restoration to large 100 year old concrete porch. The porch wraps around two sides of the house. They replaced the damaged edges with reinforced concrete, pointed 7 supporting pillars, and poured a new floor at the ground level.

Alex was fairly responsive to my attempts to reach him. We corresponded by email and phone to arrange a site visit. He promised to come out on fairly short notice to assess the repair needs of the two chimneys on our new house -- and on a weekend, no less. In the end, he got tied up and sent his father instead of coming himself. His father was very nice but didn't strike confidence in us that he really knew chimneys. He kept asking us what our home inspector had suggested be done to the chimneys. A few days later, Alex sent along an estimate to repoint our chimneys. The estimate was higher than others we'd received, but not exorbitantly so. Our big problem, and the reason why I rate Alex Masonry a "C," is that Alex's father never realized the extent of the problems our chimneys have. We had another company, which specializes in chimneys, come a week later and learned that our chimney issues extend way past repointing to the point of needing to completely rebuild one of them from the attic upwards. To not do so, apparently, risks a disastrous collapse of the chimney. Alex Masonry completely misdiagnosed our problem and I will not call him again for anything chimney-related. However, to be fair, I recognize that they are not chimney experts. If it comes to building a wall or a patio, I might still look them up again.
Description of Work: Came out to assess the repair needs of our two chimneys and provided a quote for the service.

Alex was the first to respond to our request for an estimate on the repair/replacement of a large section of our front porch brick wall. While he was slightly higher than one bid received, we decided to use them because of the positive references we received coupled with the reviews on Angie's List. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable during both the "estimate" stage and the "work" portion of the project. Alex and his crew arrived as expected and completed the job on time. It looks beautiful. We would not hesitate to use them again or recommend him to any neighbors who are in need of a mason.
Description of Work: Repaired/replaced as needed a large brick wall to our front porch--one that had been standing for 38+ years and was a victim of winter ice for the first time.

In May: Requested quote via email. Regrettably, no quote. Left office number and address. No voicemail or reply to email. In August: Tried again. Provider prefers to reach out via phone versus email, and this time I made sure I was available for a phone call. Alex came out to provide a quote promptly. He brought samples both in person, and photos to illustrate what he could offer. He provided us with options for his quote. For example, did we want a retaining wall, which would be necessary if we began the patio mid-hill? Or would we prefer to start the patio at the bottom of the slope, in which case a wall would not be necessary? We were told that the work would begin the last week of August. Unexpectedly (and much to our delight) the work was done a week earlier. Not only was the work done earlier, but it was done in one day! We were stunned. The crew was professional and polite. We had made the choice to keep the displaced dirt on the property to help level it out. The crew asked where we would like the dirt spread. We had said that they could drive the truck to the back of the property to dump the stone. Instead, the provider decided it would tear up the lawn too much and they carted all that stone and the brick pavers 70'. The crew would not accept anything we offered until I offered coffee. It made me happy that they were willing to accept a fresh pot of coffee for a break. The patio is beautiful. We are most pleased with it. Photos provided.

Alex was the first to call me back when I was searching for companies to do a patio. He was very professional and gave us a great quote. Compared to other companies (landscaping) that gave quotes for stone patios, he was much lower. The workers showed up when they said they would and I could not be happier with the quality of work they performed. They were perfectionists which I noticed right away and the small improvements that we made to our house by adding a new patio and walkway have increased the value of out property 10 fold. I am so happy that we chose Alex Masonry and I would highly recommend to anyone who is thinking of using them.
Description of Work: We wanted a new patio and walk way built. We contacted Alex and their price was good (compared to 3 others we talked to) and they installed the patio and walkway PERFECTLY! Their work is absolutely beautiful and it has enhanced the look of our property which we will enjoy for years to come.

I came home to find that a section of my wall had collapsed. I went onto Angie's list and did a search for masons in my area. I saw that Alex Masonry had some really good reviews. I called and the owner was quick to get back to me. He came out and gave me a quote. I told him to go ahead with the work and within two days the work was done. It would have been one day but the weather intervened. The quality of the work was top notch. I would not hesitate to use Alex again.

My limited contact with the company created no problems. The representative was professional and courteous in defining expectations. No reason was given for not submitting a bid, and I suspect the group had a busy work schedule. If they had discussed this with me, I could have explained the wall was not about to collapse, and a delay until spring could have been considered. I rated punctuality less than excellent simply because of their initial interest, only later deciding not to make a bid.
Description of Work: I submitted a request for an estimate to replace a 20 foot stone retaining wall on September 11, 2012. The company responded by stating they would come by to inspect the project to prepare an estimate. The deadline to submit an estimate was September 24. Just before that deadline I received notice they would not be following up. No bid was submitted.

My husband contacted Alex Masonry after I researched it on Angie's List. He had previously called two other companies (not from Angie's List) that were mostly unresponsive. My husband set up an appointment with Alex Masonry, and the owner arrived on time as expected. They walked around the house and discussed the problem with the foundation and the stone wall that at my husband wanted to change. He gave us a quote and my husband said he would call him. When we decided to move forward, my husband called to let him know. The owner told him that he was busy on another job, and it would be a week or two. Within that time frame, they showed up at the house to do the work. They didn't call to let us know the exact date they would come. I happened to be home with the kids, but even if I wasn't, they didn't need me because everything was outside the house. The crew member that assisted worked tirelessly in the heat. He dug a hole so deep that he was barely visible from the hole. When he got to the hole in the wall, he showed me how bad it was and then waited for the owner to return. The owner then started doing the repair work while the crew member got started on the stone wall. After everything was complete, they showed me their work. I asked about a few small cracks in the planter wall because I thought my husband said they would be filled in. The owner quickly got to work on those small cracks too. When they were completed, they asked when my husband would be home to show him. I let them know when he would be home, and they left for the day. The owner's son came by that evening to answer any questions that my husband had. Overall my husband is very happy about the work they did. It has been almost two months, and we have had a lot of rain, but there is no water in the garage anymore.
Description of Work: Alex Masonry repaired a foundation leak in the outside wall of our home. The wall was a garage wall with a large planter on the outside of the wall. Each time it rained, we had a puddle form inside the garage. They dug out the planter several feet down to get to the hole in the foundation. We thought it was just a crack, but it turned out to be a hole. The hole was filled in, repaired and patched up. In addition, they raised up a stone wall outside our house, which was for purely asthetic reasons.

They came out at a time convenient for me to inspect the work to be done and deliver a quote. Once we settled on Alex Masonry to perform the work, the let us know it would be 2 weeks before they would get to our job and, sure enough, 2 weeks later they showed up on site, set up their scaffolding and got to work. There was a minor issue with some fine cracks forming in the mortar due to the large amount of mortar that had to be applied, but they corrected the issue promptly with no questions.

Polite, prompt in setting up appointment for estimate, but the quoted price seemed way out of wack from others; I had concerns about writing a big check for what sounded to me like an ill-advised mostly repair job, and he did not follow through with written specifics of his bid or alternatives as promised. The C for quality was NOT for service performed, but reflects my concerns based on other contractors recommendations during the bid process, and the C for professionalism was for the lack of written explicit estimate and follow through.
Description of Work: I found the young man who came out very professional in his demeanor, very respectful, but I was floored by the estimate he gave me in comparison to other bids to replace my concrete steps, and his bid was just for repair and stone facing. Guided by the very positive comments (including the costs of the projects) by members who did have the work done, I decided to get a bid. I have a wide set of steps with a landing leading to three more steps, all original to the house, circa 1925. The corners under the pillars that support a small open portico are crumbling and cracked, as is the landing. Every contractor who has looked at these has said it needed to be a gut job--that they simply could not guarantee any patch or repair job, nor could it be graded appropriately for water drainage (part of the reason for the cracks in the first place), if the steps and base/landing under the portico were not removed. I was given a verbal quote at the time of the estiimate, which as I understood it was: to fortify the cracked area under the columns with cinder block, replace the landing with concrete, and then apply some form of stone tile over everything. Frankly, it sounded like it would be a very pretty temporary patch job. I wondered how long it would last, and the bid was twice the amount that I was quoted to demolish and replace the entire set of steps with concrete, and do appropriate grading. I very respectfully let him know that his bid was a great deal higher than others which involved total replacement and more material, though the other bids did not include stone tile (but I hadn't asked for tile either--this was his solution to my crumbling steps.) He said he would go back and see if he could come up with a better quote or solution, and send me a bid, but I haven't heard from him.

Mrs. Member Here at Alex Masonry we pride ourselves with providing excellent service for our customers. We only use the best employees and materials. The bid we gave was to fix the problem properly and not a “quick fix”. We are reluctant to do a quick fix due to not solving the problem and our desire to do the job right the first time. We have a history of providing excellent services at a reasonable price for all of our customers.

Alex Masonry did a terrific job for us, despite some delay caused by rainy weather over which they had no control. They came as promised to look at the site and provide an estimate. Father and son were great about offering two different options, explaining the benefits each offered and the costs attached. They came back on a second occasion to show us sample pavers so that we could choose the exact color we preferred. Considering the work needed and the options we chose, the price was certainly reasonable — all the more so in view of the care and genuine craftsmanship they put into their work. When weather failed to cooperate, they worked on Saturday and Sunday to get the job done in a timely fashion. The results were just excellent: the walkway and steps are very handsome indeed. I would recommend them enthusiastically to anyone, and we will certainly turn to them again for other masonry needs.
Description of Work: Completely replace damaged and ill-designed concrete front steps with stone & bluestone on concrete base, extending platform another 2 feet towards street; demolish old concrete walkway and replace with pavers; build concrete apron at base of side steps to house.

Very well. The crew arrived when expected, dismantled the old chimney from the roof up, and rebuilt it. My new chimney was designed to as to prevent water from dripping or seeping into my home.
Description of Work: It was 2 pm Monday, day 1 of a 2 day roofing job. Though the roofing crew had arrived no later than 9 am, the foreman of the crew waited until 2 pm to inform me that the chimney was in such poor shape that they couldn’t seal the roof up until a new chimney was installed. Frantic, because a severe rain storm was predicted for Wednesday, I immediately began a search for someone to install a new chimney. Alex Masonry returned my call within one-half hour and arrived on the scene about 2 hours later. By Tuesday afternoon I had my new chimney! I could not have asked for a better response time and I now have a beautiful new chimney!

Besides doing good quality work, they showed up when they said they would show up and returned any calls we made promptly. After pondering their first proposal based on our requirements we changed our minds and asked for something different - they adjusted the proposal quickly and without issue to match our new requirements even though it meant less money for them. We are very happy with the result, a good company to engage, would recommend anyone shopping for concrete/masonry work give them a serious look.
Description of Work: They replaced our existing front stoop (concrete) and walkway from the stoop to the driveway (concrete) with new concrete editions of same.. This included demolishing and removing the decaying stoop and walkway, as well as refurbishing our stoop hand rails, removing a shrub that was in the way (while preserving ones we wanted preserved), and widening the walkway.
