I have never been as impressed with the level of professionalism, hard work, and craftsmanship as I was with Alex Masonry. We have hired different contractors and companies during our 5 years of home ownership, with some major jobs like roof replacement, complete window replacement, and a full house painting (from dark red to yellow), and they genuinely have been the best we have ever hired. The pros - Punctuality & attendance: They were always on time, and worked almost every day (as weather permitted) including part of a Saturday and all of Sunday. Cleanliness: This is a team that really prides themselves on keeping a clean workspace. At the end of the day, all tools were cleaned up and out of the way. The major debris was cleaned off the property regularly during the entire project. They left no litter or garbage. At the end of the project, everything was hosed down, including the driveway, and left in excellent condition. Planning & Communication - During the planning, Alex Jr. had his iPad out with tons of pictures of actual jobs they had completed. It was incredibly easy to bounce ideas off him, and he had very valuable advice. He was easy to get in touch with via cell phone and email, and was by far the most communicative contractor we have ever hired. We spoke with him regularly during the project, and he checked in with us about all the design and material details. He was also very clear about how they would complete the work (the process) and why they chose to do it they way they do. I really appreciated him taking the time to walk us through the project and make us a part of it. Also - the team was genuinely a pleasure to have around. It was hot, and the work is hard, but they were always kind and courteous. They made only as much noise as necessary to complete their work, and were very accommodating to the comings and goings of a stay at home mom & her kids coming and going all day through their work space. Communication Regarding Cost of Service: Always upfront. No surprises. As things changed over the course of the job, there were always options at different price points for us to choose, and never any pressure to do it the more costly way. What we paid for the work that was done was more than fair and reasonable. The actual work - This was really the icing on the cake. They take pride in all aspects of their job, and it shows through their craftsmanship. It is meticulous. They take their time, really making sure that everything is done correctly. These guys build to last. I am incredibly happy with the way front step & back patio look - I feel that they have really transformed the look of our house. We plan to put a retaining wall in the front of our property in the future & they will be the only ones we hire. The cons - There are none.
Description of Work: In the backyard they tore out existing deck and replaced with brick paver patio, also creating 2 sets of bluestone tread stairs, and a separate firepit area. The area had to be leveled and there was extensive root removal during the grading process. In the front - the front entry walk was completely redone from the original concrete slab- they created a Belgian block lined brick paver path leading to a bluestone entryway. They created a step where there previously was none.

It went very well. We were very pleased with the job they did and the professionalism they showed. Alex Masonry consists of 2 Alex's, a father and a son, both named Alex. The father has the old world masonry knowledge and the son has the salesmanship and technology abilities to be able to show you examples of completed jobs on his iPad. Quotes and bills are also done electronically which makes it helpful. The job was completed on schedule and for the agreed price. There weren't any hidden costs. They worked with us to get a brown brick to match the 30 year old bricks on the front of the house (not as easy as you would think to get the right shade of brown). We ran into a small problem as they began to install the walkway where the newly built stoop was too high and would require a landing with a step to transition to the walkway, which we did not want. They rebuilt the stoop to a height that would not require a landing (at no cost to us). They want to do the "right" job for the customer and take pride in their work. It came out beautifully and is just what we wanted. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Provider removed a concrete stoop that was sinking and cracked, and built a new one from brick and blue stone. Also installed a 41 foot walkway with gray pavers.

The company was responsive and I'm very pleased with the final product. I received an estimate in May and they weren't able to fit me in until mid-June. Their first day happened to be on a Saturday and the crew worked until 6:30! They were very professional, they answered all my questions, and troubleshot with me on patio placement. They even followed up after completion to make sure I was satisfied with their work. I would definitely refer them to friends and use them again for other masonry needs.

I contacted Alex Masonry via the Angieslist website on May 23, 2014. That was a Friday afternoon and I expected to hear back from them next week sometime. I got a call back 5 minutes after I sent my original e-mail. We agreed to meet on May 28th to discuss the project, prices and when the work could be done. We were able to quickly agree on the project specifics of what was to be done. Alex showed us pictures of similar jobs they had done in the past. We were not sure how the facing materials would look at our house. We were disappointed that we would have to wait until July to get the work done since they had a lot of jobs scheduled already. If any openings became available they would do it earlier. While we waited for them to "free up" to do our job Alex directed me to a stone supplier that he used that was located in Hartford so we could look at the materials in person. We concluded that we did like the look of the materials. I contacted Alex in the third week in June to get a firm July start date. After some discussion Alex proposed June 27th start date, and they would finish on Saturday June 28th. Great, an earlier start than expected. The crew of 5 arrived 8 AM (on time) on the 27th. They worked quietly and quickly on the demolition. As that was progressing I told Alex that we preferred a more horizontal look for the quartzite rather than odd shapes. So he obliged and they cut just about every stone so that the pattern was more like horizontal wall stones. At the end of day 1, all the old stuff had been demolished, the sides of the stoop were re-covered with horizontal looking the gold quartzite and the sidewalk forms were in place. The worksite was clean. On day 2, the bluestone was cut and placed. The sidewalk was poured and finished. The whole work area was cleaned up. Sunday Alex showed up to remove the forms and fill in the form space with soil. We really like the results of this project. It was very well done without any "drama". We're glad we chose Alex Masonry.
Description of Work: Trimmed down the existing concrete stoop. Rebuilt the stoop using blue stone for the platform and stair treads, and faced the sides and risers of the stairway with gold quartzite. They also removed the existing, crumbling 25 foot concrete sidewalk and poured a new, slightly larger concrete sidewalk. All the debris from the demolition and reconstruction was removed from the site. They also removed a small amount of rubble (concrete) that was on the property but not at the work site.

Great to deal with very communicative, friendly and professional. Weather delayed the project, but that is not anything they can control. Called the evening before they came to let us know, though my husband did not check his messages. A surprise for us, but not their fault. I felt the price was very reasonable for the work done. I would hire them again in the future.

Alex and his guys did a fabulous job. They fit us into their schedule as soon as they could and did not stop working until the job was done. Alex was very professional and explained every step of the process. He also answered all my questions, which there were a lot of, and never made me feel like I was being a nuisance. Our front steps look amazing and I couldn't be happier!

My brick walkway was sinking in spots and on the stairs one brick was completely dislodged and another was broken. Alex fixed all of the sunken spots, replaced some damaged bricks, re-mortared the dislodged brick and replaced the broken brick, which was more complicated than it sounds because my stair railing is anchored into that brick, so he actually had to saw the new brick to fit seamlessly around the railing without loosening or damaging the railing. He also swept new walkway sand into the entire walkway, which will deter weeds. My walk is now beautiful again, with no trip hazards due to sunken or loose bricks!

Alex and his team did a great job. The patio came out stunning and love the design of the stairs they recommended. They were very accommodating with our requests for additional square footage and walkway after we signed the contract. They communicated with us during the entire process to ensure we were happy with the color of the pavers, the cut of the stones around the rounded pool edges etc. They finished project in timeline they had given us and we are extremely happy with our experience and would highly recommend! Can't wait for the warm weather to be able to use our new patio!

They were very responsive from the first call we made until completion of the job. We made an appointment for them to come and look at the job and give us an estimate. They came at the time we scheduled and took all the time we needed to discuss and suggest various options for the design, size, and materials to use. They presented us with an estimate within a few days of looking at the job. We secured the permits needed from the town and approval from our lake association. They began the work within a week or so of approvals. They started by removing a section of the retaining wall. During that time we had several discussions with them and made a number of changes to the original size of the patio and material we would use. They were not bothered by any of our requests and were more than willing to make any changes we asked of them. The company is a father & son family business (Alex & Alex). They are skilled craftsmen who take a great deal of pride in their work. They have the added gift of making customer satisfaction a priority. They always returned our calls promptly and made themselves accessible to meet with us at our convenience. No matter what we asked of them; changing the size of the patio, changing the materials we wanted to use ... it didn't make a difference ... the answer was always the same NO PROBLEM. WE NOW REFER TO THEM AS ALEX "NO PROBLEM" MASONRY They performed all the work they could until they were forced to put the job on hold due to snow. They kept in contact with us throughout the winter and as soon as the weather permitted they resumed their work and completed the job in less than a week. They removed all debris from the job and leveled our yard all around the patio and planted grass seed which made the yard look better than before they started. They are coming back to set fieldstone steps from the patio they installed to our existing deck. We have had our share of home improvement stories that were less than satisfactory over the years BUT ... I cannot think of a better experience than we had with Alex Masonry. I can't say enough about how pleased we are that we chose them to do this project for us.
Description of Work: They cut out a section of our lakefront retaining wall and installed 12' wide concrete steps with bluestone treads leading to a 16'x20' patio surrounded on 3 sides by a stone sitting wall.

Alex Masonry did a wonderful job at our home. They were responsive, professional, and affordable. We had another local masonry company quote us- they were significantly more expensive than Alex Masonry. The slab came out great and we could not be happier with their services. We would certainly use Alex Masonry again. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for masonry work. :)

Very impressed by Alex Masonry. We had or front steps replaced as well as the walkway. When they started the job, they immediately noticed an issue with the original plans and notified us of a re-design, which did not effect the cost. The suggested design and materials fit in with the type and age of the home. The job site was always clean and neat, communication spot on and high quality work. The end results are wonderful, very happy with the job Alex Masonry did.

The job completed was EXCELLENT! we couldn't be happier! Alex Masonry was responsive, punctual, and confirmed the details both by phone/email and on the jobsite. We were very concerned with the front porch expansion matching the existing porch. We did have enough original slate on the property so knew that would match however depending on the concrete work - it could be obvious. Alex masonry did a fabulous job!!! the new portion matches the old and they went above and beyond pulling slate from the original portion and blending the pattern so you can't tell where the old stops and the new begins. I am uploading pictures to show the detail. Also they tied in our existing weeping system to the expanded porch. The 2' of rock perimeter was done in a day, they dug down 4" lined with landscaping fabric, edged and filled with the druched? stone we selected. there was no "spill" of the stone outside of the 2' or in the lawn. They also took extreme care in one section that had established plantings that we did not want harmed. Over-all I would not hesitate to hire them again!

They did a great job! For the sake of a family member who had trouble with the abnormally high risers of the original front steps, we asked Alex Masonry to design risers that would be particularly low. They came to look over the work to be done, figured out how best to adjust the new steps to our need. They offered estimates for different options of steps and walkway, explaining carefully the benefits and costs of each. Accommodating our schedule, they came to the house again on a weekend, so we could see different pavers and choose our preferred color. When rainy weather delayed work, they came with a crew on a Saturday and Sunday to complete the job in a timely fashion. (They also referred us to a very able metal worker, who designed and installed handsome railings for the steps.) All in all, the price was certainly fair and the results earned compliments and inquiries from several neighbors. We're now almost two years since they did the work, and the walkway, steps, etc. that Alex Masonry created look as handsome and have proven as solid as the day they were completed. These guys are true craftsmen.

this concrete walkway was probably not a big job as far as these things go; 38 feet by 42 inches, and it was a replacement for a walkway that had been in place many decades. The old walkway was removed earlier by a contracter we had hired to resurface & pave our driveway. Alex framed the walkway on Saturday, 11/2, and came back Monday when the concrete was available to pour. On Monday prior to the concrete delivery, Alex prepped the walkway with a layer gravel rock and steel mesh. I was very happy to see the mesh work, had not expected this, the prior walkway certainly did not have any wire underlay. the poured concreteas from a single batch off the truck. the finished worked was covered with a protective plastic sheet that was removed on Wednesday. We live next door to a school, and Alex had a worker remain after completion to ensure students stay off this walkway when school let out at 3pm. On Wednesday when I came home from work, the plastic sheet was gone, and the gap left by the framing was back filled. No materials from the job were left; clean work. The finished walkway is perfect; slopes away from the house and where it meets the city sidewalk there is a smooth transition. The walkway has the brush strokes on the surface we had asked for to ensure good traction. the repair to the concrete step, which I had asked for only a couple days before the work started was done freehand. Given the location and the fact this was a resurfacing job, framing might have not been possible, just the same, excellent work, and no mess left for me to pick up. We were a little nervous that this work was done too late in the year, not the fault of Alex, totally our fault for a number of reasons, but the cool temps do not appear to have compromised the work. I suppose this review will need to be updated next spring, since I really can't say a great job was done until at least one winter has gone by. I will put a reminder on my calendar. At this point my wife and I are very pleased with the look and feel of our new walk. Alex will be on the top of our list next time we need any masonry work done.

Purchased a new home that has a concrete front porch. The previous owner had put ice melter on the front steps causing damage as seen in attached picture. I Called Alex and received his voice mailbox which stated they were on vacation.(Around labor day) I left a message requesting an estimate. Roughly a week later I received a call from Alex and we set up a time to meet. He came out and gave me a quote, friendly guy. A few days later he called told me since they had an other job in the area, they would be by to do my repair. I was at work so my father hung out at my house to meet the worker. My dad told me Alex's father was performing the work, also a nice guy. I was quite happy with the way it turned out. The step, prior to the repair, was a hazard and an eyesore. We discussed options for future work on this porch. I did not get any other quotes, therefore I can't say If i got a "good" price or not. I believe it was money well spent as Alex was very responsive and quick to do the work.
