Response from American Appliance Refinishing
There are a few things that can affect price. One of them is travel. I have people who call me from as far away as Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. Obviously the time required to get to jobs and back as well as fuel costs will vary. Another important reason for price is removal of old coatings that were done poorly and are peeling and/or chipping. It is one of the first questions I ask. Out of all the tubs I do, I average about one out of four or five that were done by someone else, be it home owner or so called "professional." Probably the main reason for price differences is the fact that companies come and go in this line of work at an unusually high rate. Newer companies try to get work by undercutting others so they can get their foot in the door so to speak. Unfortunately 90% of all new start-ups in the business world in general are gone within five years according to Money Magazine. Some companies who have little work for whatever reason, as well as some companies who do less than quality work and their reputation has suffered for it, will sometimes do what they can to try and secure jobs by offering lower prices (although in some instances a higher price quote by some companies is no guarantee of a higher quality job). I've been doing this since 1971 and pretty much know what I'm doing and how to do it best. I'm still in business, still busy, and still do all jobs personally so that I know they are right. I use they very best materials, but they do cost me more which adds to overhead. Regardless of someone maybe giving a lower price, it's still cheaper for the customer to have it done right the first time and have it last, than have me do it over at additional cost to remove the other coating and start all over, not to mention what they had to pay the first guy to do it. Anyone who compares apples to apples can figure it out, As the saying goes, "The bitterness of poor quality goes on long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten"
