We contracted for demolition and construction of 3 bathrooms, hardwood floors for 4 bedrooms, upstairs hallway, hardwood for kitchen, dining room, downstairs hallway, and kitchen renovation. Total carpenter costs for these contracts were approx $75,000. There were 2 change orders for which there was no paperwork provided by carpenter but which i approximate at perhaps $10,000 (generous estimate as the changes were for a small front foyer to become hardwood and a change in the kitchen ceiling over the eat in area of the kitchen. We overpaid the carpenter nearly $80,000 and he walked off the job leaving it unfinished. We now have had to employ another contractor to complete the kitchen and the punch list of items not finished around the house (tub shower door not completed, jacuzzi not connected, no trim around windows, broken tiles in the back foyer as examples of the unfinished work in the house). Monies we had given to him for "supplies" such as metal pull outs in the kitchen and new replacement Pella windows were kept by the carpenter and we found out later that these supplies were not purchased. We now have to purchase these supplies for the second or in some cases third time for the new contractor to install. Carpenter was here daily for first two months and then became more and more absent. Often he would come for 2-3 hours total and then would leave. He would not respond to phone calls, text messages or e mail. He only was here 2-3 days per week and never for a full working day after the first two months. He never said he was leaving the job and in April 2010 (over one year from the start day of what should have been max a six month job) he took his tools and left our home. He has not once returned our multiple calls, texts, e mails since he left the job. We found out after he left the job that he had let his license lapse in 2007 so was working on our home with no valid Connecticut license. In May of 2010 he renewed his license after he left our unfinished job.
Description of Work: We contracted for demolition and construction of 3 bathrooms, hardwood floors for 4 bedrooms, upstairs hallway, hardwood for kitchen, dining room, downstairs hallway, and kitchen renovation. Original contracts called for replacement windows for rooms renovated upstairs and for the two bathrooms. We added two things to the contracts namely removing tile in the front foyer and replacing the tile with hardwood and changing a portion of the kitchen ceiling from a triangle to an arched ceiling. Master bath renovation was completed save for new window. Master Bedroom was completed save for windows. Hall bath jacuzzi was not connected, the shower door is not completed, heated towel rack not installed, and hall bath has no new window. Other upstairs windows were not replaced (total contracted for was nine, total windows replaced was zero). Downstairs hardwood in hallway was not finished. Kitchen cabinets not completed. Drawers in Kitchen not completed. Shelves and doors to buffet in kitchen not completed. No hood placed over cooktop. No lighting installed under cabinets. Floor vents for heat not completed. Plumbing under kitchen sink was a "soft" fitting which broke one week after installation necessitating a plumber call to stop the flood from kitchen sink. Carpenter broke tiles in our back foyer which were not replaced. Sheet rock in garage unrepaired (needed electrical access in garage so opened sheet rock wall).
