I should start by saying that there are not enough stars for me to adequately praise Duncklee's! We began using them 12-15 years ago when they first replaced our gas furnace and hot water heater with an on-demand tankless Navien heating system. Now we can take as long of a hot shower as we want! The founder of their company, Les Duncklee was a classmate at Stonington High School with my late wife, and from the beginning, everything was exceptional in terms of explaining, install, friendliness, and performance. Then we decided to have three Mitsubishi wall A/C & Heating units installed in three rooms, running out to a single outdoor fan unit. Same experience of excellence, price, service, and especially beautiful work installing and hiding the pipes going outside to the fan. Very professional install. Since then we have had regular Mitsubishi & Navien maintenance, and a required replacement of the Navien box that failed under warranty, again with prompt, friendly, professional, and expert service EVERY SINGLE TIME. It is a real tribute to Les when I have seen how Jonathan has taken over and grown the company. Also it is a valid measure of a well run company that they have had a high rate of retention of office/service/install staff. Year after year, the same familiar names come to service or fix something that was wrong. Most companies are not able to hang onto their skilled employees like this, so I wanted to bring up this important point. I give my highest possible recommendation with no reservations about using Duncklee's for your needs. 10 Stars!! The final touch to show how they go above and beyond is that Jonathan sent me flowers when he learned that my wife had passed away. What company does that? I was stunned, and so very appreciative at their genuine caring for their customers. Thank you Duncklees--and that goes to each and every employee there. Sincerely, Charles Parrot New London, CT

Excellent overall experience, highly recommended! Jonathan came out quickly to look at installing a Navien Combi Boiler and give me a quote that same day. Technicians (Jason and Kyle) were very knowledgeable, hard-working, courteous and answered all of my questions. They did good quality work, and everything works perfectly.

Duncklee claimed to be a Carrier approved repair organization. They came to my house multiple times as they said their diagnosis was that my pressure valves had to be replaced (under warranty). They replaced the valves yet the system still did not work. They refused to return to my home to continue to try and fix the problem until they received additional money from me yet they still hadn't fixed anything. Meanwhile it is the middle of November and I am W/O heat. Duncklee didn't care- they left me W/O heat for more than month. I refused to pay them for work as they hadn't fixed anything. I had already paid them over $500 and they were requiring $500 more- again- THEY FIXED NOTHING. I brought in a different HVAC Technician who had my system fixed in 20 minutes for less than $300. I'm not sure what was more amazing Duncklee's lack of professionalism or their complete and total incompetence.

January 15, 2018 I really appreciate [Member Name Removed] s point of view, and its great to have an opportunity to hear how strongly he feels about that, but my own view is different. Some basic facts: The Carrier furnace is about four years old. We did not install Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s Carrier furnace and we have never been to his home in the past. We were contacted by him and his wife [Member Name Removed] Rizzo-[Member Name Removed] for a no heat service call. At the time of scheduling our rates and terms and conditions are explained to the new customers on the phone. Invoice #WO-5714 on 11/7/2017 we arrived to find their furnace locking out on a code of 31 for a pressure switch error. The furnace has the ability to diagnose the failed part. We ordered a new pressure switch. Invoice #WO-5756 on 11/17/2017 we removed the old pressure switch and installed the new one and was able to get the part covered under manufactures warranty. Invoice #WO-5796 on 11/17/017 we returned to find pressure switch not working, we pulled the switch and found water blocking the port, started furnace and it ran. Invoice WO-5803 on 11/21/20107 we returned to find furnace going off on high pressure switch again, we called Carrier tech support and waiting for tech support return call, this was a three-day week due to thanksgiving holiday. We did not get a call back from our call on the 21st We called back on the 23rd No call back We called back on the 27th No call back We did not receive a call back until December 5th from [Member Name Removed] from Carrier, (furnace manufacturer tech support) The case number for this Carrier furnace is 240695 Field corrective action manufacture service bulletin. [Member Name Removed] explained that the venting lengths of the furnace were specified shorter than the original installation and he sent us a Carrier service bulletin dated 1/20/2014 number SMB14-0002 titled "Condensing gas furnace nuisance pressure switch tripping" from problems / nuisance pressure switch problems and what to check/change from the original installation of furnace. Pages 1 and 3. There is a list of items that need to be modified/verified and possibly replaced/repaired in the furnace. [Member Name Removed] recommended a new control board to make the start of the furnace time longer when sensing lock out at pressure control Also, [Member Name Removed] said that we need to bore out the pressure sensing switch [Member Name Removed] spoke with Carrier as well about this furnace and [Member Name Removed] contacted us. We suggested Mr. [Member Name Removed] initiate a conference call with [Member Name Removed] so they he completely understood what was recommended. Mr. [Member Name Removed] declined this option. We suggested twice to Mr. [Member Name Removed] to meet with us to go over the technical bulletin and explain it with him in our office, Mr. [Member Name Removed] declined our offers. The manufacturer has a list of corrective actions and questions that needed to be answered before we could do corrective action based on a service bulletin update of furnace design flaws from manufacturer Ongoing, Mr. [Member Name Removed] was loud and used offensive and abusive language to the office team and threatened to call the attorney general, because he is friends with him, then his wife began calling and we explained this to her, and she said well my husband is a hot head. When the customer says, "I'm not spending another dime on my furnace." And continued with offensive and abusive language, we decide to end our relationship. We tried to explain to Mr. [Member Name Removed] the process that needs to be followed, that the manufacturer had "recall' on its design and a service bulletin alert had been issued and that we need to get paid for open and future invoices. However, it was difficult to explain the process's and procedure guidelines about his situation while he was screaming and interrupting us on the phone. In summary we have a clear warranty policy if the customer purchased the system form us, he didn't, we have a service warranty if we made a mistake, we didn't, the manufacture has problems with its furnace design and engineering. I suggest Mr. [Member Name Removed] pay his outstanding invoices and then send all the invoices to the manufacture for reimbursement.

Duncklee was the third company I had contacted, and the first to understand how to install a system in a house with a difficult layout. I rely on them for all my heating and cooling needs, and have never had any reason to consider another firm. They sell top-of-the-line products, their service men are professional and well-trained, and the office staff members are always helpful and responsive.
Description of Work: I contacted Duncklee in 2002 to install a central air system and a central humidifier in a house I had recently purchased. Jonathan Duncklee represented the company. He carefully inspected my house, and designed and installed a Trane Central Air system and an April Air humidifier. Since that time, the company has installed a propane fueled heating/hotwater system (Navian). Duncklee Inc. has serviced all units on a regular basis since they were installed.

I have been using Duncklee Heating and Air for over 10 years. The most recent encounter was not up to par. I had them out on 4 occasions in a month as my furnace was not working. I paid the $400 Sunday call out fee on the first visit. I had no concern over paying this. Two weeks later, the furnace was out again. They were there on two occasions, the first time on a Thursday, the second time on the Sunday THREE DAYS later. The invoice from the Thursday stated that the problem was fixed and no other problems were noted, yet THREE DAYS later, they were out again and charged a $400 fee plus the charges for parts and labour to fix the problem I asked that the $400 call out fee be waived as the furnace had just been inspected THREE DAYS before. I paid all the bills, never asked for any of the other fees to be dropped except the second $400 call out fee. Mr Duncklee practically accused me of trying to get something for nothing, after 10 years of being a good customer. I had expected them to guarantee their work, and I am most disappointed in the response from Mr Duncklee. I would not recommend them again.

We decided to replace our 27 year old boiler last fall and so I called around to get four estimates before making our decision. We asked Duncklee to provide one of the estimates. It was one of the strangest experiences I've ever had getting an estimate (and we've hired many contractors to do work on our house over the years). Maybe it's just a personality thing, but there were no pleasantries, just kind of felt like we were being interrogated. He did his job giving us an estimate, but I didn't feel comfortable with his demeanor and felt that was reason enough not to hire his company. We ended up hiring a different contractor.
Description of Work: The provider provided an estimate for replacing a boiler and also for changing from oil heat to propane.

During the on-site evaluation with a homeowner considering replacing their heating system and possibly moving to a different fuel source many questions and concerns are evaluated. This is discussed so that the right decision is made by the homeowner based on each person’s requirements, budget, and their unique infrastructure of their home. There are so many detailed questions to be answered, for example: condition of the existing chimney, oil tank age and condition, hot water capacity, the number of people in the home, the number of showers in the home, are there any hot and cold spots, how long does the homeowner plan on living there, will the existing system be able to be removed or will it have to be cut up in pieces, and is there asbestos on the pipes. The on demand/tankless propane gas heating system has so many additional building codes that we have to comply with on venting, flood plains, propane tank locations, buried or above ground propane tank clearances and hot water capacity. We also discuss the efficiency ratings of oil versus gas, BTU per gallon comparison and operating costs to determine which systems will save more money in the long term so that prices of new or existing heating systems versus the operating cost with propane versus oil heat are clearly understood. Many homeowners appreciate what this person is calling an “interrogation”. We feel all the questions help stimulate the thinking of the homeowner prior to purchase so that the investment of the new system and payback on the investment make sense in the long haul of each homeowner. Heating and cooling systems for some people only get replaced once in their lifetime of their home ownership. It’s a large investment for many homeowners and by our detailed questions and answer process we feel it helps make sure everyone is comfortable making the right decision once.

The company gives you a scheduled time window for the technician to arrive, unfortunately for me on the original date of service a technician called in sick so everyone was running behind. Instead of calling early in the window of arrival to inform me of this, it took me calling the company at the end of the time window to find this out. Once I called I was informed of the situation and that a technician wouldn't be able to make it to my house at all that day. I was forced to reschedule for a week later because it was the only time I had available and this time the technician showed up within the time window and fixed the problem in about 10-15 minutes. There was a part that was connected on my A/C unit that was not needed and so the technician removed it and the unit started right up. The technician was kind enough to show me how to change the filter on the heater/blower for my system. He also took a look at some home repairs I did where I moved a vent and the cold air return and verified that everything I did would have no negative effects on my system. The company was very upfront about the cost of the visit, where there is a trip charge plus the first hour of labor is charged no matter how long the technician is on site for. After that hour the labor is charged in fifteen minute increments and any necessary parts are in addition to the labor charges.
Description of Work: The breaker for my A/C unit was tripping immediately upon being shut. The technician fixed it and got my unit up and running again.

THIS IS A UPDATE ON HOW IT IS GOING FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO NEED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF COMPANY THEY ARE AND BUSINESS ETHIC THEY LIVE BY, MY PARTNER WAS CONTACTED BY JONATHON DUNCKLEE ASKING US, NO WAIT, DEMANDING US TO RETRACT OUR REVIEW OR THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE US SERVICE ON OUR WARRANTY!! DO YOU BELIEVE THIS I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF COMPANY DOES THIS. HONESTLY ....LET ME SEE NO I WILL NOT RETRACT MY REVIEW AT THIS POINT I WILL CONTACT A DIFFERENT COMPANY AND THE COMPANY WHO MADE THE HEATING AND COOLING UNIT-- GUARDIAN. THANKS ANYWAY JONATHON..... first review well to start they came to our condo and they installed the heating and cooling unit after that they told me that they would have to tweek the system and this unit was installed in January of this year. So here it is summer and the weather changed and has gotten warmer we called the company and they came out and found a leak with the Freon and supposedly fixed it and stated if we have any more issues to please call the unit is under warranty. Which leads me to today the temperature outside is 85 degrees and we put the air conditioner on and find that it is not working properly again so we call Duncklee and the receptionist answers and I explain what is going on that the temperature inside is 69 degrees and we want it cooler because inside it did not feel like it was 69 degrees, cooler than outside yes but not 69 degrees so the receptionist tells me to hold on and she talks to a technician who in turns says if we turn the temperature down the unit will freeze up if below 68 degrees and then the tech gets on the phone and we are telling him it does not feel like 69 in the house that something is wrong and again they tell us it will never be cooler than it is in the condo mind you I state CONDO not big house and we had the air conditioner on all day!! So they tell us if they come out and nothing is wrong they will charge us a fee for this service!! At this point I am so upset, and ask to set up a day for them to come out and they give me THREE WEEKS FROM TODAY!!!! Are you kidding me REALLY!! They are so unprofessional for a company they take your money and they don't come out and fix it under warranty!! So I advise anyone looking to have a heating and cooling unit installed and maintained DON'T CALL THIS COMPANY YOU WILL WISH YOU DIDN'T!!!

We worked very closely with [member name removed] when they originally purchased the system in September 2012 from us. We held the system here while they made payments, and we didn’t charge any interest charges. Also we worked closely with their friend who made the final payment so they could get their system installed sooner than later. When these two ladies called screaming at our office staff that there system was set at 68 degrees and the room was reading 69 degrees we thought they were kidding about the one degree difference, but as the conversation from these two women grew hostile, they proceed to not only scream obscenities at my staff they left vulgar voice mail messages that I saved and would be happy to share them with anyone who wants to hear the vicious, selfish and belligerent attitude of these two women. We tried to explain to them a few things to them in between their barrage of insults: 1. You have air conditioning, it works, and we have customer who have systems not working and they would need to wait for a service call. 2. That the system will only give you about a 20 degree difference from indoor to outdoor temperature and it was approaching 90 degrees outside. So if its 90 outside you should achieve 70 inside A one degree difference is not a sign the system is broken and that if we come for a service call and nothing is wrong there will be a charge for the service call. In our 40 years of business we have never had anyone call here screaming at us that there is a 1 degree difference and that we must come now! We do not service clients that are abusive and hostile. At this point we told these two women that we will no longer be serving their system. I did reach out to their friend that helped pay for their system so they could get it installed and asked if there was something emotionally wrong with them and her response was I don’t want to get involved, and that they have anger issues. Lastly, we do not respond to messages with such an aggressive and abusive attitude. So I ignored all belligerent messages they left on my voice mail system. Finally, [member name removed] did call to apologize about their irrational behavior. I returned her call only because she took ownership of the situation and then I explained to her we do not conduct business with people that behave that way. And I would appreciate that they retract the unfair negative statement from Angie’s list because we are polite and professional and do not engage in abusive and belligerent transactions

Description of Work: I called Johnathan Dunklee to request a bid on a large boiler & hot water heater replacement job. Dunklee had been recommended by some people at work, so I thought I'd give them a try. I am a mechanical engineer and I had done a LOT of research on exactly the boiler I wanted. (I wanted to install a particular make of modulating-condensing high efficiency boiler that was compatable with the cast-iron baseboard heat in my historic home.) I asked Mr. Dunklee if he had any experience with the brand I was interested in, and his response was a very gruff, very dismissive, "Never heard of it." Figuring I'd still give him a chance and hear him out about what he might recommend instead, I described the system I was looking for and some of the parameters of my house and needs. He answered that they used a particular other brand. When we began discussing some of the technical details, I wasn't very impressed with his responses. Being an engineer, I knew when he was "reaching", and I didn't like it, and when I raised some particular questions, he was, once again dismissive. Mr. Dunklee is apparently the salesman for the company, but I didn't get the impression that he actually get involved in any of the work. What kicked me over the edge was, when I asked for someone to come out to my house so we could discuss more particulars, he only offered times during the work day. I explained that this was a non-starter, as I have to work myself then--I'm not going to take time off from work to meet with a contractor for an estmate!!--so Mr, Dunklee checked their calendar for the next available appointment for an evening/weekend estimate. I called them on 6/8/2012, and the next time they had "available" to do an estimate was at the END OF JUNE !! Wow, if they were that unresponsive in just trying to obtain my business (which would have been about a $15,000 job), how responsive would they be if I had problems with their work? I never ended up having them even come to the house, and will seek someone else. Please take these comments for what they are worth. Maybe Mr. Dunklee was just having a bad day, but I don't think that is the way to earn a good repuation with customers.

In this instance, Member called inquiring about an installation, but steadfastly demanded we install a brand of boiler we have no history with. We attempted to explain that we only install the industry’s finest equipment, products that we know and trust. In the case of boilers and water heaters, we install gas Navien tankless heaters, and Buderus and Weil McClain oil-fired boilers. Over the years, we have developed strong relationships with these top-tier manufacturers and distributors. We have confidence in the equipment they built, their distribution system, their parts availability and their industry-standard levels of support and service. Like us at Duncklee Cooling & Heating, these manufacturers stand behind their products with some of the best warrantees in the business. We have built our reputation by installing only the best products in your home or business. We don’t install second-rate products or any equipment that is at all questionable. And it is this confidence we have in the manufactures we represent and the work we perform that has provided our customers with confidence in us since 1973. We were never provided the opportunity to present our products and services to the customer. We offered to meet with him, but he had contacted us in June, which is the peak time of air conditioning season when evening and weekend meeting times are extremely limited because they get booked far in advance. We attempted to work with him on scheduling an appointment, but to no avail.

the initial visit from technician was expensive and did not resolve any problems. I was charged for about two hours so that I could hear what I had told him was wrong with the unit! I was promised to have the unit repaired within 7-10 days. It took more than three weeks! The repair work was okay and the two installers that completed the work were polite and thorough. I just wish that the owners themselves were as responsive to customer as they were quick in charging their very high rates.
Description of Work: Company was called initially to check on AC that had been installed by them 5 years before. Technician arrived a week later and after 1.5 hours informed me that the unit needed a new coil and that it had lost most of the refrigerant. He also said that the unit was out of warranty and that I might want to consider a new unit. I asked him to tell the company to give me both estimates (one for replacing coil and repairs and the other to replace the whole unit with a new one). Later in the afternoon I received a call from the office telling me that the AC was still under warranty for the coil and that the repairs will cost about 900.00 dollars. I went in person to the company and paid for the job ahead of time. They promised me that I would get the part within 7-10 days and the work would be completed the day they got the coil. That did not happen. It took over three weeks to get the part and get them back in my house to install it. In the meantime, I called Duncklee at least 6 times to check on shipment and the installation date. Each time the receptionist told me that she would check and call me back in a few minutes. Each time they did not get back to me. I also left voice messages to Mr. Duncklee himself and never got a reply! It was finally 23 days after that they finally got back to me. Very poor communications with this long established company. I was very disappointed and frustrated. I will look for a different service for my home; a company that wants to provide quality device and respects their customers.

This customer, , whose account was closed out and was in third-party collection because he never paid us for service in the past, presented a unique dilemma. Because of this situation, we required him to pay his previous balance before we could move forward ordering parts or providing additional service. Despite this situation, we informed the customer the work could be done under manufacturer’s warranty; we worked hard and researched this product’s warranty status saving him a considerable amount of money. We quoted him 7-10 business days (which translates to 14 regular calendar days) plus shipping time to receive the new coil. This is what the distributor quotes us. Once the coil arrived, we contacted the customer to schedule the installation. This is fully consistent with our company procedures. Because we have no control over availability or shipping, our policy is to wait until the part has arrived before scheduling work. We dispute the customer’s timeline of more than three weeks to order the new coil and get it installed. Our records indicate the new coil was installed 17 days from the day of diagnosis. We consider this to be exemplary service, especially when you consider the impact his delinquent payments had on the timeline.

Would NEVER recommend company. When the water heater was installed, the hot water relief valve was placed at the top of the water heater, rather than run down the side of the tank toward the floor. If the water heater blew, hot water would be spraying all over. A plumbing company corrected the problem and said Duncklee had done the work improperly. In addition, the crew left wires hanging out of the walls on the lower level -- exposed and uncapped. I had to have an electrician correct that problem. I requested Jonathan Duncklee come over and view the situation and he never came. In addition, the 3/4-inch PVC condensation line was improperly installed in the main vent stack and leaked throughout the upper level. I was informed by other HVAC technicians that the hole was made too large and the line barely inserted, resulting in the line falling out and causing water from the condensation to leak throughout, staining my newly painted ceilings. I was advised by three HVAC persons that one does NOT dump into the vent stack and the imporper installation of the drain pipe caused it to pop out. Mr. Duncklee was unresponsive to my complaints. Other service people had to be hired to correct the situation.

Very well, after a visit when they sized the job to determine which system I would need (I had already researched this and had other people come give me estimates) we agreed on a system and I provided half of the payment (they do also offer financing). I was scheduled to have it installed within a month but they were able to get me in just 2 weeks later. The installer was very knowledgeable and very helpful. He arrived on time, cleaned up each day and let me know where he was at the end of each day. He provided excellent training on the system as well which was greatly appreciated.
Description of Work: Installed a ductless heating and AC system. Included 4 indoor units, the outdoor unit, all electrical and piping as well.
