It took a few months for Dan's and the Romaniello family's schedule to open up to do our work, that is how in demand they are. They do both small- and large-scale work; ours fell into the smaller-scale. Once on site, they provided several alternatives in alterantive price ranges. Once they did the work, it was flawless and beautiful. They texted photos of their work to my husband and me while we were at work, cleaned up every day and left everything so much better than they found it. They are highly professional and personable. Don't get impatient if their workload means your job is a bit delayed to start. They are worth it!
Description of Work: Completely rebuilt, redesigned and strengthened front steps leading to house, including railing.

The Romanello's are excellent masons. They made a prompt quotation for the job, and offered good advice on how to make the front walk of our house look great. They arrived when they promised and got down to the job. At the end of the day they cleaned up. They removed the old flagstone walkway, and the deteriorating front steps and then rebuilt the front steps with concrete and granite. They workers have been with them a long time and work well together. They were able to bring several teams down and paved the front walkway which was about 50 feet long in one day. Now I use the front door, rather than the garage because the walkway is so nice.
Description of Work: Romalello rebuilt our front steps, and made a new front walkway and landing with highest quality granite. Put down a Belgium block border.

Everything looks beautiful, they were very easy to work with, and I am very pleased with the outcome.
Description of Work: I hired this man to perform repair on my front porch and sidewalk.
I got three bids. One was very high and the other two were close, but I went with Joe because he said that he could complete the job within two weeks, weather permitting, where as the other contractor estimated that it would take him four to five weeks. Joe came in with a crew of six and completed the job in 13 days, and it would have been quicker if it had not been for a few days of bad weather. To be clear, I was looking for quality work, not speed, but if given the choice between similar levels of quality and one was going to take two weeks and the other was going to take four to five weeks, I will go with the shorter, less life disrupting contractor every time. The wall is beautiful! Joe and his crew exceeded my expectations in every way. If planning masonry work you should definately consider Joe Romanello!
Description of Work: We built a 60 foot stone wall that was six feet high at points.

The job did not go well. They started out ok, then would leave my job to go do other jobs. It was very difficult to get him back to the job. He would not answer my numerous phone calls. i finally had to contact the masonry supply company to help get him back to my job.

Response from J Romanello Masonry & Excavating
this was a very disorganized person....her other mason passed away suddenly . so i was reommended by my supplier......that was fine..she was a very pleasant person but could not make up her mind on areas of her project..which was a time consuming issue..there were never complete answers on how to address problems that other mason did also she did not follow rules to town guidelines of greenwich ct..i tried to comply but she wanted it done her way(wrong way)but i did get paid for my services with no problems....
Joe was fantastic to work with. He showed up on time every time he set up an appointment with me. My first impression was extremely positive, as he knew his stuff and was the most reasonably priced (I had contacted 5 other companies for quotes, and he was by far the best). Once the work started, the team he had in place had a fluent English speaker present at all times, and Joe was around almost all the time making sure the job was going OK. He was also extremely flexible when my hill presented a few surprises - like an extreme amount of dirt relative to our initial design, and hitting unexpected quantitites of stones. He even added in one of the side retaining walls on his own - it made sense, but we hadn't discussed it before the work started, and he didn't charge me for it. His team was quiet (surprisingly so, given the excavation required), orderly, took to-the-minute lunch breaks, were self motivated, clean and friendly. They cleaned up at the end of every day, making sure all the details were attended to (even watering my plants daily when the weather got really hot), including adding a silt fence to make sure the dirt mounds didn't run off into my neighbors when it was raining. They even took out a 20+ ft poison ivy bush without complaint!! Joe himself is a gregarious, caring individual that makes you wish more people that work on your home were like him (he would fit in easily at your family bbq). He's incredibly reasonable, and the top guys on the team are the same. It was a plus to know I was hiring a guy that was so local - he's lived in this area his whole life, so clearly takes pride in the work he does. I couldn't recommend him more! We will be using him again for other projects in our yard (a much smaller retaining wall in front, new steps, more patio), but probably not until at least next year when our budget allows. My neighbors are super impressed with the work done, and I even had my next door neighbor thank me for having the work done, as it improves the value of our neighborhood.
Description of Work: I contracted Joe and his team to excavate our hill, taking out the existing broken retaining walls, and to build new ones. Joe had to excavate our yard to terrace it into 3 levels. The yard itself was full of rocks, and he even had to chip away at the rock ledge which we found towards the top of my hill (our backyard is a hill coming out from the back of the house, to a rise of about 16 ft from the level area next to our house). Joe built 3 long retaining walls (45-60 ft each, 4ft high) and built 2 other side walls (20-30 ft, from 1 to 4ft), all of fieldstone. I also had him widen our flagstone patio by 3 ft, for a total of 90 new sf.
