The rep went into our attic and looked at our fan motor. He said we would have to replace it. He could not tell what model it was and he told us that someone from Billy Carlson would call us within a week. No one ever did call us. So we called another local AC Pro, based upon a neighbor recommendation, and he came over immediately. He suspected that the fan motor might just need oiling, so he went out and came back with some oil and oiled the fan motor using the small hole provided to insert oil. Our fan motor came back to life right then. We did not have to buy a new one, and he charged us less for his service call than did the Billy Carlson company !
Description of Work: Our central AC Fan motor stopped working. We called Billy Carlson. They sent over a very young man who appeared to have very little experience. He was no help at all, and we were charged $143 for the service call.

The tech came when they said he would be there and told me the unit is overheating and freezing up. He told me he can clean it and that if it still isn't working we need a new A/C. I had him clean the units ($167.00 for service call and cleaning). It didn't make a difference. The tech said it would be $6000 for a new unit. Since the A/C only can't keep up with the temps when it's over 90, we are not replacing it just yet. I think they are expensive and I would have liked some other options (especially since I am visibly pregnant and spending $6k is not ideal right now).
Description of Work: Upstairs A/C not keeping up. Our house is 20 years old (we bought us last year) and the A/C isn't keeping up upstairs with the heat. I called Billy Carlson at the recommendation of y neighbor.

I woke up this morning to a cold home and the heat didn't seem to be working - nothing coming out of the vents. Everything seemed to be running - just no heat. I called Billy Carlson and a tech came out about 20-30 minutes later. Quick and professional and the price was not too bad. The tech was very good at letting me know the filter that needed to be changed and how often. I moved into this house 3 months ago, and I'm afraid I had no idea what to do to maintain a heat pump. I was very impressed with the service and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Replaced a clogged air filter on heat pump, which was causing the unit to overheat and short cycle.

My A/C failed on a weekend in June. I waited until Monday afternoon to call, because the weather was mild. The pleasant woman who answered the phone gave me an appointment the next afternoon because the weather was still mild and I don’t usually get up until noon. The next day, a nice, professional service man came on time and fixed it. He replaced a visibly bad capacitor with a new one from his truck. He did an annual service and cleaning to make sure there were no more problems with my 16 year old central A/C system that had not been serviced since who-knows-when before we bought the condo three years earlier. The service cost $130 plus $18 for “coil cleaner”. The capacitor cost $80, which seemed like a lot for a capacitor smaller than a beer can. He then gave me a 10% ($23) discount on the subtotal because of where I live. That was three months ago and my A/C has worked fine ever since.

After installing a Daikin inverter system in our house about 1.75 years ago, we had trouble with a unit last summer. Carlson fixed the problem and didn't charge us (? under warranty). The same problem occurred now and they refused to come and re-repair it. Only said they were and quot;busyand quot; and would refer us to another company. Response to Provider's Response: To be clear about our address, Angie's List has our business address not or home address where the work was done. We had used Mr. Carlson as our HVAC provider for 8 years and never had a problem until this point. We paid him over $20,000 for various services over that time. His worker did, in fact, take the wallet out of the pocketbook. He was interrupted before anything else occurred so we did not know his intension. The homeowner was unsure what to do and spoke with the foreman on the job who said she should tell Mr. Carlson. The customers were at least as uncomfortable with the situation as the company and debated long and hard whether to say anything. He apparently chose to believe his worker over the homeowner. No one was threatened. It would have been helpful if Mr. Carlson said at that time he no longer wanted us as a customer rather than refusing to answer phone calls for service or telling us he was and quot;too busy.and quot;

I've never responded to a report,however,this report needs some clarification. First of all, the member has falsified his address to where he resides and hired my firm to install said Daikin system. Another reason why my company will NEVER work for this individual(s). I did in fact honor a One(!) year workmanship warranty,which he writes in his report. However, when my crew was installing the system, I was acused by the member wife of one of my workers taking her pocketbook and empting it and going thru it. It made for a very uncomfortable completion of the job. I was screamed at ,threatened and was made to feel that my crew were theives. In my 33 years in this business(as the reports on Angie's list show) My reputation on my workmanship speaks for itself. I have never been put in that situation and after much thought ,I decided not to continue the business relationship after my workmanship warranty expired. Ironically, based on the date of the member's report, he called my office on that day,and after he was told again that we were not going to his home, he screamed at my assistant to the point where my assistant had to hang up. 3 days ago , a letter of apology arrived at my firm from the member apologizing for his behavoir . An unfortunate experience I will never forget

He overcharged me. He kept charging me an accouting fee which I had never heard of before. One person could have done the job, and it was too much money. I will not use them again.

Finally got the quote on May 2nd after waiting 5 weeks, along with an apology letter from Billy for taking so long on the estimate. Price was in the same range as others, which were sent in a timely manner.
Description of Work: On March 28th Billy came out to give me a free estimate on replacing my boiler. He was very punctual and professional. He was going to be emailing an estimate to me with all the details I was looking for. A few weeks went by and I never go the estimate. I made a phone call and I was told he was still working on a few estimates which included mine. It has been 4 weeks and still no estimate. If he did not want the job, he should have said so from the beginning. To keep someone hanging for almost 5 weeks is unacceptable in my book. I have gotten 4 other estimates and got those estimates back within 2 weeks. Not sure why this one was taking so long. The good reviews from Angie's members, is why I called to begin with.

On the start day, everyone showed up on time and introduced themselves to us, as we came in contact with them, most courteously. We went over everything: again, just to be sure we were all on the same page. The crew worked fastidiously all day to make sure everything was precise, with no ness for us to clean. Day two was more of the same: they came and got right back to work. Everything was completed by the end of the second day. We were given instructions for the operation of our new system. All of our questions were answered in a way we could understand. I could not have asked for a better experience ! .
Description of Work: We had central air conditioning installed in an older home. We called Billy for an estimate. He came, took note of any and all of our special needs and gave us several options. He went over everything until he was sure we both understood the options. When we asked about possible future add-ons, we got clear and concise answers. Once we decided on what we wanted, we got a piece-by-piece breakdown of price. We also got an estimated start date. Billy called us the day before to confirm the day with a time of arrival.

On 1/31/12 Billy Carlson made a service call to troubleshoot my malfunctioning condo heating system (heat pump). He performed some minor diagnostics on the outside unit and came back a couple of days later with another gentleman and looked at it again. He installed a replacement capacitor or some such in the outside unit on the off chance that that would get it operating but was unsuccessful. He diagnosed a dead compressor and pointed out that recent repair/parts replacement had been done improperly in the past (prior to my owning the condo). Billy recommended replacing the entire system rather than spending any money trying to repair the 26 year old system. We discussed replacement options and he provided quotes for a couple of different options. I also obtained two other quotes from competing companies. After comparing the various quotes, I decided to go with one of the other companies (also an Angie's List rated company - see another of my reviews for this work) which provided a substantially less expensive quote for the same equipment. Billy Carlson Heating and A/C billed me for 2 hours at 129.50/hr and a $45 trip charge for the above described services. I indicate that I'd use this company again but not without a clear understanding of the hourly rate up front and, as I did and certainly would again in the future, get competing quotes.

Billy Carlson came to examine our needs. He spent a lot of time checking our system, the duct work in the house, etc. He went through his recommendations and my options in great detail. He answered my questions, gave me product literature, and then within a day sent me an email with several options with pricing (and potential areas to save money). I reviewed my choices with him, and we agreed on a price and timing. His price was fair, he was flexible in payment options, and he was willing to begin the work almost immediately (during the Xmas/New Years holidays so that i could take advantage of a 2011 every rebate offer.His crew was professional. It was a big job that took 2 full days (longer than expected). They walked through the operation of the new heating system with me, left me all the directions I needed. A day after installation, the heating was not working properly. Billy Carlson came to my house the day of New Years Eve to fix the furnace. He spend a couple of hours working on the system and finally discovered that the and quot;mother boardand quot; or some central control panel was faulty. He called the manufacturer on the phone, and tried to get him to find a new panel to be picked up or delivered that day. When that didn't work, he called a competitor to try to get the part. When it comes to honoring his promise to take care of any problems, Mr. Carlson is serious about his customer service. Once the part was replaced, the heating system worked great. Our house has never gotten warmer as quickly as it does now. And, if I have a problem, I trust Billy Carlson to make it right.
Description of Work: Needed to replace oil hot air furnace and central air. Carlson's crew disassembled my old system, installed the new furnace, new thermostats, and central air conditioner. They altered the duct work as needed. And they removed all debris. They did a very good job.

Ultimately we decided to convert to natural gas but went with another company soley because of the financing that was available. The estimates were very close. I would definately consider using Billy if I find myself needing his services.
Description of Work: Billy was helpful in working with my schedule to set up and appointment. I'm greatfull that he was willing to be flexible. He came in looked at my boiler, oil tank and discussed my needs. He also asked me if we had natual gas already coming into the house. That was something my husband and I hadn't thought about so it also gave us another option to consider. He sent me a detailed estimate for both an oil boiler replacement (a little more than another estimate I already had but still reasonable) plus an estimate for a natural gas conversion. There was no pressure in any way and I never felt as if he was trying to up-sell me.

Billy came out to the initial estimate himself. I was having a central air didn't and furnace installed I didn't buy the parts from Billy but he was happy enough to point me in the right direction so i didn't get ripped of from other vendors. The estimate was great, the work even came out cheaper than the initial quote. His crew on installation day was great as well. Very knowledgeable and they even upgraded old electrical, which from speaking with other companies was going to cost me an arm and leg. Would most definitely recommend using his company.

Servicemen communicated effectively and worked quickly to assess the issue and fix it. The A/C hasn't worked this well ever. The one negative was that I was expecting to have a follow-up call from the receptionist to schedule another appointment, but they never called.
Description of Work: The lever that controls the airflow was broken on my Central Air unit. The serviceman fixed that but also did a check on all of the other components and my a/c is working better than it has when I first bought the house over a year ago.

Billy was responsible for providing my second major upgrade to my house. The one I'm writing about now is related to my new central air conditioning installation summer of 2010. He and his men were always professional and prompt. I am very pleased with the service provided by Billy. My first major installation was a new boiler summer of 2009. It was a very complicated installation with many zones. I can not express enough how pleased I am with Billy and the service he has provided. Every thing is neat and clean, and he puts a lot of thought into the work he does. I also use Billy for the maintenance of my new furnace and central air conditioning. You will be very pleased with Billy Carlson and any work you have done by him.

They were professional, punctual, used shoe covering so as not to track in dirt, cleaned up after themselves, and were fairly priced. Didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. Description of Work: I have been having a problem with my heat for a few days now. I thought it was fixed but last night and again today I still had no heat again. I called Carlson Heating & Plumbing this morning and was given an approximate arrival time of later today. To my pleasant surprise the men showed up around noon and went right to work. They discovered that I had a frozen pipe and suggested that I call a plumber that was better equiped to handle this type of problem. The charge for this call was $0.00. This is my first experience with a company from Angie's list and I went right back to the list to get a plumber. I would HIGHLY recommend this company.

Billy came to the site as construction was under way to provide instructions on location of wall unit and power. When general contractor notified him the addition was ready for install, he was there the next day and installed the interior unit. Completed the install with the exterior unit the next day. Cleaned up after themselves and carefully explained operation of the unit.
Description of Work: Carlson was a subcontractor in adding a master suite to our home, the general contractor used him for a new ductless split H/AC system. Install was quick and professional. Installer took great pains to explain operation and left call-back info if we had any questions or problems.

His men were pleasant, professional and I can't say enough good about them. The job was finished late on a Friday afternoon, and at no time did anyone of his men make me feel like they were in hurry to start their weekend. The job was finished, and the next day Billy came out to inspect it. Both Billy's men and Billy showed me how my new furnace would work. And told me to call if I experienced any problems. There have been no problems. It has been such a pleasure dealing with Billy over the past few years. I will definately be keeping him and his men around for a very long time.
Description of Work: I had used Billy in the past after firing my previous heating company for not fixing numerous problems with my furnace; anything from using used parts (and paying for new) to not using any parts that I had paid for and in the end not fixing my furnace. Finally, I called Billy and began using him for my furnace service work. When he or one of his men came in to fix something, the job was done right the first time. He and I had discussed from the beginning that a new furnace would soon be needed. Billy helped to nurse the old furnace along until I was able to get my new furnace. Last summer (2009) I finally got my new furnace. I have 6 zones in my house so Billy had spent quite a bit of time thinking about what would be the best approach to intall this. And to mention, my father had been in heating and air conditioning for 30+ years so had set up a complicated system. It took 2 days to get the new furnace in (which Billy had already given me the timeframe).

I have previously reviewed this contractor for a separate service. As stated in my previous review, I was sufficiently impressed that I said I'd use him again. On Wednesday, I had cause to. I arrived home in the evening and the house seemed cool, but when I washed my hands, there was hot water. I fired up the dishwasher as well, and then turned the thermostat up a bit. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that it was not getting any warmer (it was cold outside - upper 30's). Checking the air blowing from my ducts, it was cold, "Bloody furnace is out again!" and grumbling, I trundled down to my unpleasant excuse for a basement. Sure enough, the furnace was cold, so I hit the reset button. Instead of firing, it made a hideous sputtering and coughing sound. You're not supposed to push the restart button more than once, but I misbehaved and hit it again after waiting a few minutes. Same nasty sounds and no joy. I called Billy about 8:45 pm, paged through to the emergency voice mail, and he got back to me quickly, maybe 10 minutes. He informed me of the after-hours service call rates, warning me that it would be cheaper in the morning when I wouldn't have to pay time-and-a-half for the tech. But it was definitely too chilly, and since we take our showers in the evening, I would have had to listen to complaints from my wife and son, so I asked him to send someone out. The tech was there quickly, I think within 30 minutes or so. He was (as in the previous report) polite, professional, and efficient. The problem was diagnosed, and he had the parts replaced quickly, slightly less than an hour start to finish. The parts cost about $220, plus the labor, so it was not a cheap evening. (I really hate my heating system!) However, because I have used other services in the past for similar problems, I know that Billy's price was fair, and I feel well-treated. In short, my second experience with Billy Carlson Heating and Air Conditioning was also positive, and I continue to recommend them.
