We stripped a very problematic portion of the roof on this colonial style home in West Hartford CT. The area had a transition between an extremely low pitch and a standard pitch. Which in and of it's self can cause problems. On top of that there where 3 skylights. 1 was located on the low pitch and 2 on the standard pitch. On this type of roof set up, with so many penetrations on low pitch, there is very little margin for error. The existing low pitched skylight was an improper product application. It was something called a deck mounted skylight, which is built for more of a standard pitch roof. So it had been leaking intermittently. There was also problems with the transition between the low and high pitched areas, and at the base of the other 2 skylights. Once the roof was stripped we removed some siding to be able to run a modified asphalt flat roofing product up the sidewalls, onto the very low pitched area and a few feet up the standard pitched area. That area was to shallow for standard roofing shingles. We also installed, and roof cemented in, the appropriate kind of skylights including the recommended factory flashing kits. We finished off by applying a high grade ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment and shingles up the standard pitch portion of the roof. Finally we reinstalled the vinyl siding that had been remove. This was a very complicate roof installation. But we where very thankful to be able to help [Member Name Removed] and his wife, and know there home is well protected.
