BUYER BEWARE! Imagine eating what you think is possibly the best chocolate chip cookie, and then your last bite you find a small rock which chips your tooth and ends up costing you over 1K to fix. It all started great, as the owner, and his wife, who runs his business, where meticulous, punctual in getting back to you, very friendly, and what we considered professional and the right company to renovate our downstairs. So we hired Cross Cut Custom Carpentry (where attention to detail is apparently NOT everything). A couple of days prior to ending the job, we asked the owner, "Aren't you going to paint the trim?" To which he replied, "No that's not in the contract…we are not responsible for that." We asked ourselves how can that be as the room basically didn't look finished at all…Trim work included painting 4 doors, a sliding glass door, 3 windows, columns and the trim along the walls of an almost 1,000 sq. ft. total space. And so my husband put on his paint clothes and spent 2.5 days painting and has much more work to still do. When the owner came to collect his final payment, my husband wisely pulled up the contract and saw that the painting of the trim was including in the pricing of the contract. However, he did not confront him on this but instead said I will give you the money once my wife talks to your wife about a couple of things. The owner said that this is a problem and left and then came back to our house and after my husband did not answer the door, the owner sent him a text that said… I’m not here to try to strong arm you, I realized I was wrong about the trim in the contract and wanted to discuss it quick to come to an agreement. This proved that the owner knew that he had misled us into believing he was not responsible for the trim (as we never mentioned to him that that was why there was an issue with giving him the last payment. When I spoke to the wife, instead of apologizing, she reiterated how her husband did things that he didn't charge us for (which did not amount to any more than 300-400 dollars…And yes, this is true, but we know now he did because he didn't want to incur the cost of painting the trim and was trying to get the remainder of the balance (@2,300.00) before we realized that it was in the contract. Long story short, they did give us @ $1,400.00 back, but also threatened to bring a lawyer into the picture if we didn't pay the amount they wanted. They treated us like they were the victim…when they were the ones who defaulted on the contract and lied about the trim. To be honest, the quality of their work was good, but we ended up with an unfinished project!

Response from Cross Cut Custom Carpentry
This is an unfortunate event and we have learned a huge lesson from this client. This client is someone that was trying to get one over on us from day one. They filed their permit with the town with inaccurate information and truthfully that is when I advised my husband we should pull out of this as if they are that dishonest with the town who is to say we won't have that issue with them. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and decided to proceed with accepting this job. Unfortunately, they also confronted our team in the field and tried to attain their phone numbers, so they could have them moonlight on the side. Once my team which signs a non-compete clause in their employment contract denied the access to having their number as they cannot legally do that and notified us of this incident. The homeowners also went behind our back and had our electrician do extra work that we were not notified of until the bill came in and we questioned our electrician and the Homeowners told our electrician that they would take care of it with us and again there was not an email or phone call regarding the extra work. Again, another instance to clarify the character of the Homeowners. Anytime this homeowner asked a question or wanted to reassure that the guys in the field were correct in their statements the office received an email from them to confirm, reiterate or just questions in general. Which we had received over 50 emails in the first two weeks that we were on the job and we took our time out for every single one of them and kept in constant communication with the homeowners. Towards the end of the job and the notification that the Final payment was coming once we installed a louvered door we did not receive one email from the homeowner not even to question the painting of the trim at this point. Instead we received an email stating "ok, Great". There was a simple miscommunication that could have very easily been rectified. The pre-primed white trim that was installed was to be painted white by us. The doors and all the other items that the homeowner is mentioning above was NOT included in the contract. Painting the walls and trim was the only things that was our responsibility as far as the painting goes. We are human and there was a mistake on our end. The wife called me and was very rude along with cussing and degrading. Numerous times I told her I understand your frustration, and this was not our intention and she would not listen. Myself and my husband then sat down and tried to come up with a way to make this right as our intention was NEVER to get one over on anyone. SO, we put ourselves in their shoes and gave them a $1,440.00 discount on their $2298.00 invoice which required them to pay $858.00 for the remainder of the work that was completed. In sending an email that outlined the over $500.00 in free work that we included in the job that was not charged to them. We also noted the staining of the stairs that they kept using to get out of paying the balance was an item that was NEVER discussed and NEVER included in the contract but was still insisted on the phone and via email as another item that we did not complete which is completely FALSE. I never threatened with a lawyer as I professionally stated that if the balance that we were rightfully owed was not paid that we would then have the remainder of the discussion with our lawyer as that is our right as a company protecting ourselves. The Homeowner then replied back and was rude and belligerent and threated with her lawyer and my reply was simple: "Our lawyer will be in touch". At that point the Homeowners husband contacted me via email to get our PayPal id in order to make the final payment. If we did not do the job and try to rectify why would they pay within 15 minutes of our email.
