I found out on the day work began that he did NOT have Workers' Compensation coverage for his work crew. That was a BIG red flag but I went forward with the contract.
His crew removed the old brownstone wall in order to gain access to the tree stump which had been pushing the wall outward. The stump was removed.
My neighbors began calling him for quotes as they saw his truck parked in my frontyard. He parked his truck in my frontyard though I asked him not to. There were ruts in the frontyard as a result.
Work on my property stopped after he contracted with a nearby neighbor for stonework to be performed.
His crew performed the following work on my property:
1. removed the pavered sidewalk (but did not replace it leaving only dirt in its place);
2. quickly replaced the Brownstone Wall in a weakened manner (now a $2,500 repair);
3. took the decorative stone from the flower beds and put it behind the Brownstone Wall (where it has been dribbling out since his work);
4. Removed old stump material from the property; and,
5. Raked the decorative beds in the front yard but did not fully remove all material(s).
His crew did NOT perform the following contracted work on my property:
1. did not replace the pavered sidewalks;
2. did not remove all front garden material(s) from the property;
3. did not smooth out the berm in the front yard;
4. did not replace the Brownstone Wall in a proper manner. To wit; the stones are not staggered, are leaning outward, they put the 1/4" decorative stone behind the wall (to reduce their own dumping fee) and did not put in 3/4" drainage stone which the contract stated and proper techniques require;
5. did not deliver and "dress out" topsoil on the property.
I had to have another landscaping company come in with a Bobcat to level out the berm, deliver top soil, etc. They immediately advised me that the Brownstone Wall was re-installed incorrectly... which other Landscape companies have confirmed.
Ropbert J's kept pressing for final payment prior to completion of work while I had quests in my house. He simply would not let up, so I paid him with his oath that they would come to finish the job on the following workday. They never returned to my property.
I have had the following projects done in updating my 200 year old home: new roof, new windows, new staircase, new kitchen, removal of walls, repair of fireplaces, updating of electrical, etc. without problem.
I basically paid $3,400 CASH (he wouldn't take any other form of payment) to have a tree stump removed, pavers removed, and decoratve beds raked out.
I have had some excellent work performed by companies on my home. But Robert J's was the only contractor who failed to perform to complete the contract. I was amazed that someone would simply not complete a project AND work on a neighboring property while ignoring my calls.
