Yelp review of Callahan Bros Moving & Storage.. Mason Ave. Greenwich, CT. This company is contracted by Joyce Van Lines. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR YOUR MOVE!!! Needless to say, moving is one of the most stressful experiences you will go through in life, and it would be nice if the moving company you entrust, and PAY, to get this done doesn't deceive you and extort money from you during the process. Will Hunting (and NOT the good one) came to our home and provided us with an estimate for our move. This we understood was an estimate, and we fully expected our charges to be in excess of the $1200 initial estimate he provided. In fact, at an hourly rate of $200 with four big guys, we believed the job would get done in 8 hours. With one hour charged for driving, the cost would be $1700. However, after the movers arrived and began working, about 3 hours in, we received a call from June, the office assistant, who proceeded to inform us that the job would likely take 11 hours and cost about $2300!!! WHAT???? Let me tell you what Will and June did next.. they waited until the crew got our property to our new residence and then called us again and told us that if we didn't pay the workers the $2200 at that time, they would instruct them to stop working with all of our property on the truck. We were only 5 hours into the job for a total of $1100.00 (including the 1 hr travel). June called again and I told her I gave the crew $1600 and that Will should call to settle up with us after the move... NOPE! Will called and said we had to pay them another $400 or they would leave the property on the truck. After I reluctantly agreed, I assumed the final charge would be $2000.00. NOPE! June called ,AGAIN, and halted work and said we had to give them another $200 bucks or no furniture. Long story short, they wanted $2200 bucks and that was that. The original estimate was a fantasy, provided to us to seal the deal for the job, and then instead of being taken to our new home, we were taken to the CLEANERS!!! LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!! Never use this company and subject yourself to its abusive business practices that more resembled the Sopranos rather than the Callahans. DON'T SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. They are clearly shaking down their customers to pay for their fancy Greenwich address. NOT WORTH THE TIME, MONEY OR AGGRAVATION DURING AN ALREADY STRESSFUL TIME. Hey Bad Will Hunting... this isn't over. UPDATE: Dear Mr. Joyce, We are in receipt of the attached. Being New Yorkers, we frequently enjoy sarcasm and smart attitude, however in this situation it is altogether inappropriate. Your letter completely disregards the cause for our complaint. Allow me to remind you of our conversation... We took issue with how your staff, subcontractors and salesperson held our property hostage on three separate occasions on the date of our move. We were told on each of these occasions that work was being halted until we went to the bank and got more cash to pay the driver, AND that until we did, the clock was running. This is completely inappropriate and abusive business practice, especially considering that we were repeat customers and were not a payment risk, as you claim so many of your clients are. That said, may I also address your comments from our conversation on Monday. Your characterization of me and my husband being, "you people from New Canaan" was completely uncalled for. You don't know us and have no right to make that judgement. In fact, on the prior move, the movers did real damage to some of our furniture, however you never received so much as a $1.00 claim from us, much less the "$10,000.00 claim for a scratch" that you claim to receive from people from New Canaan. If you can't deal with the facets of your business, then you shouldn't be in it. That said, in good faith, we handsomely tipped the workers as it was the right thing to do, regardless of how we were treated by their management. The fact that Jeff The subcontractor has five children is heart-warming, but I have no idea what that has to do with the way we were treated. For that matter, my husband and I have four children... does that give us the right to treat our clients this way? No, it does not. That said, the $300.00 settlement is no longer sufficient to settle the matter. I will not be removing those posts at this time as that was not discussed between us as a contingency. My husband and I are owed a sincere apology for what happened to us last Friday from you, Will, June and Jeff, and a guarantee from you that this won't happen to any of your future clients, regardless of what town they live in. Thank you, Catherine P
