I would like to help my neighbors to avoid wasting their money on a Service Agreement offered by “HomeServe” to pay up to $3,500 per service call for covered water line emergencies, up to two service calls per year. :”A fast, reliable service offered by local plumbing and drainage experts, 24/7.” “….Hopefully you won’t be faced with a water service emergency, but with prompt, expert assistance just one call away, you’re safe in the hands of HomeServe. Right! About the second or third time I got the flier in the mail, I signed up for automatic payments by credit card to HomeServe in case I had another break in my water line. Sure enough, the time came on the 19th, in late afternoon but I thought I’d wait until morning (not realizing it was Friday). I called 10:15 am - Yes, they’d get someone out right away. “He’ll call before he comes just to let you know,” “About how long do you think?” “Under two hours” Great. So I wait – nothing yet at three hours, so I call back 2:30 pm – They’re working on it - be a little longer- apparently don’t have a local plumber They’re in Tennessee! 4:15 pm – I called again - “waiting for someone to call me back – any minute” Nothing more on Saturday. Sunday 8:45 am - They called: Still need somebody? We can have somebody there Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon” 9:15 am – We can be there Tuesday between 1 and 3 pm, or between 3 and 5 pm. I said Okay, but did call a local plumber from the phone book, and he was here within 30 minutes, did a great job and gave me a very good price. I did Google the company Saturday, and found Scam all over the place. BBB gives them F, I should have known. I only lost $15 on them, but I’m glad I didn’t pay this for a year or two. I’m probably not the only one who signed up for this, so I thought maybe you’d like to pass the information on, save someone else some money. (When I asked for a refund, they said okay, but it will be pro-rated – half.)

So for several years I have had an central air conditioning service plan with HOMESERVE --its costs more than few hundred dollars each year but covers service calls and parts .....Have never had to use it till Thursday....ten phone calls, three service visits, including one where he was on his cell phone the entire time he was here .... lots of snippy conversations with customer service reps, three parts all failed within seconds of them leaving -- after the last failure yesterday ......begged a friend of a friend who has an HVAC person to come look at the unit .......... guess what its not the part they kept replacing ....... its the motor in the unit that is shot .....couldn't figure that out on maybe visit two or three...just kept doing the same thing over and over ...I am very disappointed in this company HOMESERVE.....Of course they are all SOOOOOOOOOO sorry I am not happy with them and so am I becasue I will write a bad review of HOMESERVE anyplace I can!!!!!!!

We have a plumbing service contract with HomeServe. The service was OUTSTANDING. The plumber called back almost immediately, he came exactly when he was scheduled (perhaps even a little early), and spent more than two hours identifying and fixing our problem. We got probably $500.00 worth of plumbing services for just over $100.00. Great deal!
Description of Work: We had a shower leak in an upstairs bath. The plubmer came right on time and worked for over two hours to find a fix the problem. Very professional, very thorough, and cleaned up perfectly.

I have an A/C and gas heating annual contract with HomeServe. When my heat went out, I called them and they came quickly, replaced an electrical part, and gave my unit a cleaning and re-lit the pilot light that had gone out. It was all covered under the service contract, so no charge.

We pay $423 for an annual service contract on our home heating and central air conditioner. Today's visit was for a malfunctioning pilot light on our heating system. We put the call in this morning, and they gave us an afternoon appointment. (They are in Farmingdale, and we are in Nassau County.) They arrived 12:30, and worked till 3 PM, changing the required part and cleaning the system. (Our system is 30 years old). In addition, the tech noticed our pressure relief air tank was full, and replaced it. The price? All covered in the service contract. You can't get better than that.

I have carried a service contract with my gas utility for over a decade covering maintenance and repairs on my hot water heater and furnace. The utility, National Grid, out-sourced the warranty service to HomeServe USA in 2012. Last month, my hot water heater began shutting itself off intermittently, so I called HomeServe to report the problem so they could provide me with the and quot;prompt, expert serviceand quot; that they advertised and that I had been paying for all of these years. HomeServe informed me that I would have to wait 10 days for the next available appointment to have my hot water heater repaired. Ten days without hot water before they would even look at it - so much for prompt service. When the technician arrived he determined that the controller unit needed to be replaced, but he didn't have any on the truck. After waiting another week without hot water, another technician arrived with the new controller, but could not install it because there had been a redesign of the controller requiring that a new, redesigned burner unit also be installed. Unfortunately, he did not have a burner unit on the truck. After another few days, a third technician arrived to install the parts. The hot water heater is now in good, working order. Bottom line is that my family had to put up with no hot water for almost three weeks even though we maintained a contract for the specific reason that we wanted priority service in the event of an equipment breakdown. HomeServe USA did not provide prompt service to my family and we are dropping our contract with them. PS: Each of the three appointments we had with HomeServe USA were in the afternoon. An afternoon appointment with HomServe means that you have to wait from 12 noon until 6pm. The company does not show its customers the respect to provide prompt appointments and then expects the customers to wait around for HOURS waiting for them. Isn't this what people can't stand about the cable companies?

The service can be $10,000 because they have to literally break through the grounds. My service line went within a year after I signed up with them and they did it. They fixed the whole thing and I got the service line done. I paid them $110 and they did a $10,000 job for me. I could have quit after that because I'm going to be in long debt before the next time I have a service line problem and that stuff literally goes every 30 or 40 years. Their prices are a bit cheap and it covers everything from electrical to water. One time my boiler broke in the middle of the winter and they had somebody out here. It cost about $2,500 and they covered $2,100 or something like that. They have really good contractors who would come out and actually do the job. I had a toilet problem and I had the people here. They came, did the job and they paid and I had no problems.
Description of Work: I've got several policies through HomeServe USA. They cover different kinds of problem. They cover the line from the main to the house so that if my water pressure goes down the service line they take care of it. If I have drainage problem, they'll come out and I can get them in emergency as well.

Back when it was Keyspan, we bought a new HVAC unit from the utility. Since then, we've used them for annual contract tune-ups. Never again. The experience has deteriorated horrbly every time the company was bought out. They obviously over-schedule the service people, and the phone operators in Florida, or wherever, have no way of communicating with the drivers in the field. Last year, when I was scheduled for a morning appointment, the dispatcher decided to switch me to the afternoon slot without me ever being notified in any way. This year, for a 12-6pm appointment slot, this guy showed up at 7pm and then declared it was too cold to test the AC. Really? Maybe because it's the middle of the night? And don't mumble and be rude to the customers. Lesson learned. Patronize your local, independent tradespeople.

Don't assume they will go one step beyond the "letter of the law" in the fine print of their detailed terms of service to help a regular customer. Don't assume they will help you find a good local plumber who will do the things they will not do.
Description of Work: "Service date" refers to last customer service contact - an attempt to get a furnace tune up which on the surface is part of their package, but which in reality can only be done outside of heating season, and with some difficulty. This is basically an insurance subscription for emergency work on a furnace. You pay them $300+ per year and they will come and do emergency repairs. That's fair enough, but don't get the idea these folks are like a responsive local plumber who will do both maintenance and emergency service. There are two parts to this review. An actual service visit (great) and the corporate business model and customer service (better this year - 2011 - but basically not customer-friendly and very rigid) I had a furnace problem in 2010 that stopped the furnace when it was 10 degrees outside. The tech came in an hour and fixed it. He was wonderful. He said the contract did not cover a basic plumbing issue, but he did the needed fix to get the furnace running. This was fantastic and deserves a B+ (not A, because tech was not allowed to change problem part, even for a fee, he could just make it run at the moment). The problem is the business model, the customer service behavior, poor communication, and the rigid senior management policies. The contract price includes a furnace tune up each year. But it turns out the company will only do them from March through August. They don't make this visible in their one paper mail each year, and if you want the included tune up even one week outside their limit, for example, they will not come. To be honest, this is indeed what they say in the fine print of the contract, but this is not in the main brochure, and the scheduling process is not easy or flexible. In addition, I have always been told to have the furnace tuned up before the heating season, so it is done after the furnace sits unused for 5 months. Furnaces "settle" when not used, and I have found it best to get it tuned just before the heating season, to detect any problems. Can't do that with this company. Could do that with the smaller company this company bought out. Booking a date 5 or 6 months in advance is a real problem for some of us, especially given their open slots. This year they said they would come in the other 6 months, but at a price of $90. It also turned out to be very hard to find a time slot even at the $90. I therefore paid for three years of the "service" and they never did a tune up. At their $90 off-season price, that means I paid $270 for "tune ups" that they never did. So - this is not a service policy. It is an expensive insurance policy for limited emergency repair only. When you compare this to the auto policy on my car which is not much more in cost, this is a very expensive policy. Their customer service call centers were disorganized in 2010. They are more organized now, but still rigid and not always informative. Their marketing is somewhat misleading, because they still behave like they are part of the local utility. This implies you have a local partner, but they are really some form of corporate call center, and local contractors, who do not seem to be part of the same management structure. The emergency repairs rate high. The business model is not particularly helpful.

As I mentioned above, my heating system did not go on. Apparently, some air bubbles were in one of the zones because I could hear them coursing through my pipes. I know enough how to bleed air from the system, so I turned off the electricity to the unit and the gas valve inside the Weil-McLean boiler (circa 1991). I then connected a garden hose to each zone and purged the air into a bucket of water in a nearby sink. I was able to get most of the air our of each zone. When I tried to turn on the furnace, I failed. I tried several times before I finally gave up for the night. The next morning the HomeServe technician (HST) arrived. He "checked" the system and said I could a) get a new system, b) spend $500 to $1,500 to get the system through the season, or c) try another contractor. He gave me his name and left. A few minutes later I decided to try again to start the system. I checked the instructions on the panel and went through the motions. I got it to work because ... I failed to turn the gas valve in the correct direction the night before (about five hours before the HST arrived). I guess I was just too tired after bleeding the zones that I mistakenly thought OFF was ON and vice versa. BTW: The HST nver noticed the incorrect position of the gas valve! After he left I checked Angie's list and found Sila in Stoneham. The customer service person said a technician would be at my house within four hours; he was! He fixed my system quickly. I have since stopped my contract with HS. I did get a note in the mail asking me to sign-up for its electrical contract because the company said people in my area did not have that type of coverage. Yes, right ... another attempt at increasing income. I would NEVER, EVER recommend HomeServe to anybody, not my "proverbial" worst enemy! :-)
Description of Work: I purchased an annual service contract with Home Serve (HS) in early December 2011. I had previously had annual contracts with Boston Gas and its successor National Grid. My previous contract expired in October 2011. I never received an e-mail, phone call, or snail mail about renewing the contract. I discovered the lack of a contract in November 2011 when I was in Florida visiting my mother. My housemate called me to tell me the heater would not turn on. When I called HomeServe it told me I had "canceled" my contract; I would have to pay for a separate service call ($169) and then begin a "new" annual contract. I tried complaining to HS but to no avail. It was adamant that I had "canceled" the contract. So, I did have a service call in late November that fixed that problem. On January 4 around 5PM the furnace failed to ignite when zones were calling for heat. I called Home Serve and asked for a technician to come to my house. The tech support staff said the earliest appointment would be the following morning. I asked if I could go on another list in case someone canceled their appointment. Around 10 PM I called HS several times about my lack of heat. A person at tech support said service was on a first-come, first-served basis. I called customer service, but it said it did not have access to the tech support database. Customer service only handled problems with bills! I asked if I could talk to a manager, but the manager gave me the same story. The technician came the following morning and, retrospectively, did absolutely nothing. Well, he did try to sell an improved heating unit to me. He did ask that I remembered his name when and if I decided to go with the $500 to $1,500 "upgrade."
