 + -1 moreWe were charged almost $1,200 to replace a strip of flashing that was about 10ft long and about an hour of effort for two men. They also investigated a possible leak from the guttering on the garage. The original estimate was $870. Steep but should have been easily done within this cost. $1,200 is excessive in my opinion. It took about 6 weeks to get them onsite after the job was estimated and they showed up without the flashing. They charged us travel time to go and get the materials that had previously been estimated. The quality of the work was fine but their overall organization and adherence to their own estimate was poor. To cap it all, they left a smoking pile of mulch, possibly from a cigarette. Luckily, it was spotted before a fire broke out. Cannot recommend.

Unlike most of the contractors we have dealt with, their phone is always answered by a person (during business hours), and messages always get through to the contractor, so things usually go quite smoothly.
Description of Work: Wall repair/re-plastering/painting related to installation of wall sconces, outlets and related wiring.

 + 0 moreThey were extremely difficult to get here, scheduling wise. I scheduled appointments and there was no show with no contact at all. They actually did come out to give us a quote and may actually end up doing some work. I started this process a week and a half ago calling them to schedule the appointment. I scheduled the appointment and 15 minutes before they could be here I got a telephone call telling me that they were not coming and wanted to reschedule. We rescheduled and then my daughter ended up being sick so I reschedule for the next day right away and they never showed up the next day. No telephone call and no nothing. I actually spoke with their office. Then I got a call and again they said that they were sorry and set up another appointment for Monday. They never showed up again. Then it took me 4 times but they finally came. The scheduling was spunk but when they got here they were really professional.

 + -1 moreI emailed them on 1/8 asking if they performed furniture assembly, and if so when they'd be available and what it would cost. They emailed me back on 1/9 (great so far!) saying they wouldn't have anyone free until February but could schedule me then. I emailed them back on 1/11 asking to schedule, and asking again for an estimate. I emailed them again on 1/19, and never heard back. After posting the complaint above, they contacted me and we were able to schedule the bed and headboard assembly I needed. They called ahead of time, arrived early and were very professional and fast.
Description of Work: Bed, drawers and headboard assembly (IKEA).

 + 2 moreWe called to request an estimate and Colin came two days later; we then received an email with the estimate a few days later. In a phone call, he answered some questions we had about who would be doing the work, and assured us that his crew consisted of professionals he'd worked with for years. Two men arrived exactly at the time promised, and the work was completed within two days (plus an additional visit to complete some sheetrock work). We were very pleased with the workers, who were polite, professional, and who left the areas cleaner than they found them! We would definitely use this company again. Phone calls are answered by a live, real person, and we even got a note after the work was completed thanking us for the work.
Description of Work: We used this company for three things: to install exterior handrails between existing columns on our porch and to install matching handrails on either side of our steps : to paint columns and some decorative trim around the front door; and to do some sheetrock repair in our basement.

 + -1 moreThe job was done competently, on time, on budget, with a minimum of fuss, and with full clean-up. The quote had been just a bit higher than we would have expected, but he did not go over, and given how hard it's been finding someone for small jobs, we felt it was worth the price to find someone who was insured and bonded - especially since we have a laundry list of small and medium sized jobs yet to be performed. We plan on using Colin's people again -in the very near future for some electrical work, small plumbing jobs, and even walkway and landscaping work. Time will tell if the new grout will mold again, but his office manager Marissa tells me that most of Colin's work is warrantied for a year, so we have confidence that if by some chance it's not done right yet, we know it it will be.
Description of Work: Two years after we purchased our house, cracks appeared in the grout in our tile-enclosed standing shower, in a newly added-on 2nd floor bathroom (right where the new construction met the old) - just due to "settling". At that time (two years ago) we hired a different handyman to re-grout. Over the next two years some of that grout mildewed, molded, and fell out. Even while the mold/mildew/falling out was occurring, we found it impossible to find a qualified handyman to come out for such a small job, till we joined Angie's List. We found Colin Shaw, who has what appears to be a fine operation with employees whom he can dispatch as needed, for small jobs and large. They dug out the affected older grout and replaced it quickly, and also replaced our back door weatherstripping (it had been scatched out by our dog, when she would scratch at the door to let us know she wanted to go out to the yard). Additionally, they mounted a brass kickplate on the door to cover the scratches there, and to prevent new scratches.

They did the kitchen work first, on schedule and for the amount estimated, as that was the order I wanted it done. Then when I was ready to do the fencing, they responded and the fence material was ordered and installed within two-three weeks. They came to work when they said they would and they finished within the timeframe we discussed.
Description of Work: They put in split rail fencing. Work was done when scheduled, crew was professional. I had used them before on a small project in the kitchen and was highly satisfied with both their work and their timeliness.

 + 3 moreVery satisfied. Once the project was started, the workmen came every day, 8-9 hours. The cooperation between him and us was great. The finished product is also great!
Description of Work: We had some ice dam problems where water came into the house causing havoc to the ceilings and around the windows. We were concerned with what was behind the drywall. He cut into some of the drywall to check the wood for no mildew or mold. He also checked the condition of the insulation for moisture. There were four rooms upstairs and four rooms downstairs that were checked. He also filled cracks and did other plastering/painting to alleviate the water spots, damage and mold.
