We waited a while to write this review in order to see how well the work held up over the winter and spring. So far, it has been excellent. We have not experienced any other water problems in the basement. John was very punctual and responded to phone calls and emails in a timely manner. In addition, he was professional and courteous. J.P. Bachand Contracting did a great job and left the basement neat and clean before they left. Would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: Opened the concrete floor in 2 places and cleared blockage from footing pipes to allow water to flow freely to the sump pit. Installed a hatchway stairwell threshold drain and a thru-floor weep joint under the foundation to control water that was coming in. A new sump pump and check valve were also installed. Minor repair and application of water repellant to chimney.

John was quick in getting out to assess the situation and was very patient with us in explaining his proposed solution. He also emailed us several helpful articles as well as photos of a similar job he had performed before. We contacted two other companies for comparison, and one never responded and the other came in at a much higher price, but only suggested the exterior water barrier at a much higher price. Based on that and how informative John was, we decided to use his services. Once we agreed on the project with John, he came out within the week and installed the interior drainage barrier and added the external water seal and regraded our exterior landscaping slightly to minimize the potential for water to get to the foundation. He kept us well informed of his progress and texted us pictures of the work at different stages through to completion. The work looks fantastic and they did a great job of cleaning up everything when they left. Timing was also great, as we got a significant rainstorm the next day and I"m happy to report that no water appeared on our basement floor. Just to REALLY be sure, I also set our sprinkler directly onto the crack for several hours and no water appeared inside our house. John and his worker did a fantastic job and we would highly recommend him to others!
Description of Work: We've had intermittent leaking in our basement furnace room for years and it recently had gotten worse. John came out and assessed it and determined that there was a foundation crack that had been poorly patched and he indicated the best option was to install a thru-floor and enclosed drainage barrier over the crack on the interior of the wall so that if any water were to seep through it would drain harmlessly underneath the house's foundation. At our request, he also added a water barrier seal to the outside of the foundation wall as well to help minimize water seepage from the outside, though he was very clear that this would not guarantee that water wouldn't eventually leak in, but with our interior drainage barrier, it would definitely not leak out onto our basement floor. He performed all of the work discussed.

I noticed a small wet area on the wall at the floor in my basement. I sent an e-mail through the Angie's List message system to JP Bachand on 6-1-15 at night. He e-mailed back in an hour providing some helpful information. I spoke to him in the morning on 6-2-15 and we discussed the possible type of work and the estimated costs. He went to my house that same afternoon. He called when he got there (I was at work) and then called a couple of hours later when they were finishing. He came back that night to show me everything and to check things inside to see if I needed basement waterproofing work on the inside. He checked the basement and explained what to look out for. Fortunately he said that things appeared to look good. He did not try to sell me any additional services. Although it was a small wet area, I was concerned, and John helped provide peace of mind. He responded quickly, is knowledgeable, and is very nice to deal with. Thank you!
Description of Work: they checked and cleared gutters and clogged downspouts a couple of the downspouts that go into the ground could not be fully cleared so they capped them and changed the gutter to divert the water away from the house

During second year in home, and after installing wall to wall in family room of raised ranch, we discovered major amounts of water saturating rug and room. We knew we had water in garage too but this was on concrete floor and wasn't a big issue. Both areas of concern had visible, and at some point previous repair, foundation cracks. Decided (good decision) to call a specialist instead of a general contractor. John was very responsive, punctual and professional. He explained, as well as showed me, everything. He showed me how the cracks went from the footer to the sill . John fully explained that fixing the cracks was a waste of time and money. Even with the cracks fixed we would still have a water problem. He, with his specialized equipment and custom materials, completed the job in less than a day. I waited this long to write a review because I've always been looking for the next huge storm. I'm now happy to report that my downstairs, both locations, are dry as a bone. Is this type of work inexpensive? No... but John's price was more than fair - you get what you pay for and your home is most probably your most valuable asset. Contracting with a specialzed professional was a good call. If I ever have another water problem I wouldn't hesitate to call him back.
Description of Work: Eliminated significant water infiltration into house from two foundation cracks.

It went easy from start to finish! I contacted him by email after checking out his website. He got right back to me and we talked about my problem. He knew just what the problem was and was able to explain it very well. He came out to look at it and we agreed on a plan of action. The work was completed in one day. They were friendly and professional and I am completely satisfied with their work. I would recommend them to all!
Description of Work: Installed a threshold drain inside my cellar door to prevent flooding into my basement, flushed the drain to the sewer line, and oiled and fixed the back flow valve to the sewer line to prevent back ups.

Wow! another all positive review. Thank you, we will always try our best to earn the trust our customers have shown us. The transparency provided by unsolicited reviews on Angie's List is a high threshold to maintain, but we welcome the opportunity as we continue to serve the local community. John Bachand, JP. Our 1929 roof was missing some slates and I wanted them replaced, as well as an evaluation of the entire roof. John and his associate, Chris, were prompt, professional and thorough. They inspected both inside and outside for indications of leaks and explained to me some of the processes involved in maintaining this type of roof. They were considerate of plantings when placing their ladders and cleaned up thoroughly. John also suggested that he could replace outside flood/sensor lights since they were already up on the roof. This was a great service to me since I usually need to call an electrician to replace these bulbs. John also cleaned out a few gutters that were difficult to access - he volunteered to do this, I didn't request it. I've had several slate roof services over the years and Jon's prices were fair and reasonable. I would definitely use his company again.

Thanks for the kind words, I wish there was a way to review my customers, most of them would get the highest ratings. They're the reason I've survived in business, even through the slow times. I am grateful for the opportunity I have to work for such a diverse customer base, from residential to institutional clients, never a boring day. I enjoy what I do, and hope I can keep on serving the local market for a long time to come. Thanks again, John Bachand, Owner JP. Bachand Contracting, Newington, CT

I found his name/number in a local weekly paper, then checked to see if he was listed on Angie's List. He is and has a good rating, so I called to get an estimate on getting rid of the water that gets in my cellars (I have two, one under the main part of the house, the other under an addition added 20+ years ago). He came that same evening and walked through both areas. He told me that he could not keep the water from coming in, at least not for what I could afford. He told me he could channel the water out, but added I didn't really need to have that done as the water was already finding its way out. He added that the water was not damaging anything (my cellars are cement and stone). And mildew doesn't grow on stone.... My cellars are storage areas for tools and the lawnmower, canned foods and the like - they aren't living areas. The newer cellar has some wood pillars that are only supporting a shelf and he suggested I have them replaced, but again said it would not be necessary because they aren't support beams. I was really pleased with him. I had two other companies come out and give me quotes on drains and sump pumps, which are actually unnecessary and out of my price range. If I ever need the work he does, I would hire him in a heartbeat, and I will recommend him to anyone who asks if I know someone.
Description of Work: My cellars get water in them and I wanted ideas and estimates on how to control the water. He came to my house and did an inspection.

Thanks for the positive feed back, Even though we didn't do any work for you, it sounds like we might of helped you sort out your priorities. From what you told me, you were getting estimates from other companies that did not seem to have your best interests in mind. I have to be a salesman, but that's the part of the business I least like, sometimes we have to look at the whole picture and know when not to try and sell someone what they may not necessarily need at that time. This company is the best! We called on 4/2/14 around 5:30 PM, and he came right over then. He looked at the issue, quoted a great price (same as we were charged) and was back the next morning. The job took a few hours, but went very smoothly. I would recommend this company to all!

I found John 6 years ago through the local newspaper, and he did an excellent job then with a waterproofing job on the west side of the basement which has held up perfectly well ever since. Late last year a completely different water and mud problem appeared on the north side of the basement. Based on my previous experience, I finally called John and he was at my house that day (he even remembered me from 6 years ago!), and repairs were effected the very next day. The whole job took about 7 hours. He is prompt and courteous, and explains everything clearly, and his quoted price was exactly what the job came to. He even checked his old work from 6 years ago to verify that the drainage system installed back then was still working. I'll obviously know more after a rain, but based on my experience from 6 years ago I am confident that my newest problem is solved.
Description of Work: Over the course of the last 6 months a very serious rainwater/snow melt/mud/silt problem appeared on the north side of my basement. I needed to have the problem analyzed and repaired. I thought it was coming through a basement windowsill - but was I ever wrong. The problem involved the footing drainage system underneath the concrete floor. Holes had to be opened in three spots to get at the completely plugged clay drainage pipes and new drainage pipes put in. The floor then had to be patched with concrete and as a precaution, a new drain hole was created to allow me to annually flush out the system.

John is the owner, he came on time to give the estimate. The estimate was very fair, on par with another from another reputable company. What sold me is that John does the work himself, with a helper or two. It's nice to have the owner of the company on site while work is being done, and it enabled me to leave them alone in my house for the day while I went to work. Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy was forecasted to hit town the Monday he was supposed to do the work, so he proactively called the Thursday before and arranged to come Friday and do the outside work then. He and his helper dug out and replaced the window wells, replaced the covers, and dug a path to reroute water away from my basement window on one side. They also blew out the back gutter, which was full of leaves, to allow for better drainage on that side, at no cost. This helped my house stay dry through the hurricane. He called the day it ended and arranged to come out the next day to do the inside work, which looks like it was done very professionally. I will update this review after the first rainstorm to note whether the work held up, but I am confident that it will. Overall excellent experience.
Description of Work: Dug out and replaced existing window wells, added new 2 inch pipe to drain water into existing french drain in basement, jackhammered floor under windows to access french drain, repaired floor, flushed drain.

Thanks for the positive review; this is my first Angie's List review. The whole online cyber business thing is new to me. Even though I’ve been a state registered home improvement contractor since 1983, I just recently built and published my own website. I’ve been a bit of a techno-dinosaur up to this point, but I am quickly coming to the realization of just how important this internet business relationship is going to be going forward. I can think of no better way for a consumer to evaluate a company they are considering to do business with, than an online review. It’s a form of word of mouth, which traditionally, has always been the most reliable, but takes it to a level outside just a circle of friends and moves it into the community wide domain. Historically, consumers had only the Better Business Bureau or the State’s Consumer Protection Department to turn to for help in that evaluation process, both those routes can be cumbersome and the data obtained, somewhat ambiguous. The Angie’s List method of objective online reviewing offers the most transparent look at an entity, and is going to be the tough new standard businesses like mine are going to have to meet from now on.
