Description of Work: Steve and his team did a great job with our kitchen and laundry room repairs after a water damage issue. Steve was great in working with us in regards to our budget and he was also was great in keeping us informed on how the project was going. All the crew working on the various stages of the project were very knowledgeable and professional. Definitely a crew we could trust working in our home. The project was completed on time and on budget. We already have a list of other projects we will be using Pickering Construction for in the future.

During Hurricane Irene we noticed our kitchen ceiling was dripping and also several water stains we hadn't noticed before. Apparently a boot/flashing on the exhaust vent was missing (or so we thought) and water was trickling down the pipe to first floor and pooling in the kitchen ceiling which eventually caused the drywall to leak peel away. It was only a matter of time before a full blown hole would have developed with all the rain we've been having this year. My husband found Pickering construction on this site and contacted him via email. He responded in a timely manner and worked with our busy schedule to come over and assess the the job. He sent a quote the next day which was a very reasonable price considering the repair that needed to be done. He arrived on time, completed the job in half the time he initially quoted and even took a photo and emailed my husband a picture of the work he did on the new boot he installed on the roof. They did such an excellent job matching the kitchen ceiling paint that I can barely tell where the repair was done. The work area was spotless and I was very pleased with the job. Fantastic work! We will definitely use this company again.

I contacted Pickering Construction after having had an unsatisfactory experience with another contractor who does not appear on Angie's List. I found myself in a position of having an exterior paint job stalled because I needed someone to re-side the second story section of siding above my garage. Half the boards were rotted and needed replacing, so it made sense just to do the entire side. By the time I found Pickering Construction, I had interviewed and received estimates from five different construction contractors, including one from another company listed on Angie's list. My painter was already done with all of the painting that could be done without this work being completed and I needed someone capable and fair to do the work well, and to do it as soon as possible. Enter Steve Pickering. He was not the least expensive estimate I received for the work. but his estimate was reasonable, I thought, for work done on a tight time schedule, to the level of quality I was looking for. Steve followed up and returned my call quickly. He listened, asked relevant (and confidence building) questions, and even asked for measurements and photographs via email, so that he could determine a thorough estimate without having to leave his current job site for an entire day to make the trip out to assess the work I needed done. What followed was a weekend of thoughtful conversation and project planning back and forth via telephone and email. I was immediately impressed with the time and effort Steve spent thinking about this project before he was even offered the job. I found Steve to be articulate and willing to communicate clearly. Truly a professional business person who seemed to take pride in his work. As soon as the existing siding was removed it was clear that the original builders of the house cut corners. The house was not even wrapped. Steve secured the house with Tyvek house wrap, which turned out to be really significant because we had heavy rains that evening and the next day. He and a partner worked with a careful and methodical pace, measuring, cutting, installing and sealing the siding on the second story of our home. Each day the work site was left clean and the materials were secured, which is important because I have curious children. At the completion of the job Steve did a final clean up, leaving my driveway and yard free of debris and nails. The completed work looks really good, even before taking paint. The closet work was begun and completed equally well. As a customer I especially appreciate the great communication and follow through, as well as the willingness to guarantee his work. Steve Pickering was very precise in the expectations he set, and he delivered on every one of those expectations, on time and on budget. Given that the estimate was negotiated before Steve even saw the job site, Steve said upfront that he wanted to reserve the right to amend the price, if need be, but that he would be fair, and was willing to actually negotiate the price downward if the job required less materials and work than he anticipated. I reserved the right to take him up on his coupon offer, if I thought the final price was unfairly inflated. At completion, the job cost $250 more than the estimate, given the need for additional materials. Steve did not charge me extra for the additional labor to wrap and trim up the house, he simply charged me materials cost for the closet shelving, tyvek wrap and the composite trims needed to do the exterior job well. I was so happy with the level of workmanship and professionalism throughout the process that Steve is welcome to the extra money that his coupon would have saved me off of the job. I will not hesitate to call him the next time I have work to be done.
Description of Work: Removed and installed new primed cedar clapboard siding on second story of gable end of house. Job included removing and re-siding on both sides of the chimney, and around windows, from the roofline of the garage up to the peak of the upper roof. Provided and installed Tyvex house wrap, checked for and repaired rotting trims with composite rot resistant trim. All work hand hammered with stainless steel, non-rusting nails, and caulked to provide a watertight seal. Designed and installed basic shelving and a bar for the closet in the master bedroom.

Pickering Construction were nothing but professional. All of their work was done in a little over a day to our satisfaction. Communication was excellent. They were very courteous about letting us know when to expect them, even going out of their way to let us know they would be arriving a little late one day. The cost for their services was also very reasonable. In short, we were very pleased with their work and would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: They replaced the kitchen casement window, propped up the bay window overhanging the deck, performed deck maintenance, and did smaller repairs, which were fixing a kitchen drawer and adjusting the storm door so it would close properly.

Despite encountering several obstacles due to the "Do it yourself" previous owner, and late arrival of necessary parts, The job was done in a timely fashion. Steve is very courteous, professional, and goes out of his way to make it right. The toilet I had ordered online did not fit properly, so Steve promptly went ahead and purchased a new one with his own $$ as I was out of town. The finished bathroom is exactly what I wanted and I couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Steve gutted and demolished old bathroom. He installed a new shower floor, tiled the shower and bathroom floor, installed a new sink and vanity, and medicine chest. He also removed a window and will reside the house when the material arrives.

The project was just finished this week and I could not be happier. The room looks better than before. Steve was also able to save me some money on the carpet. They pulled it up and examined it and said that there was no mold or damage to the carpet pad so a professional cleaning would be all we need to do. This saved me hundreds of dollars on a new carpet. I have already talked to Steve about two additional projects. I think we are all in the same boat that finding a company you can trust is very difficult. Now that I have found that company in Pickering Construction I will be using them for any and all future projects. Thank you Angie ! You helped make this an easy process.
Description of Work: We had some water damage in our finished basement . We needed to get the drywall replaced in the ceiling including insulation and the replacement of our central air connection tube. We also needed to have the carpet replaced. I asked Steve to provide an etimate, along with two other companies. He arrived on time and provided me with the confidence that he would be able to compleate the project and meet my budget. The other two companies seemed OK but Steve came across as very professional and I was left with the feeling that his company would be the right choice. Once I made the decision to go with Pickering, Steve was very responsive to my emails and said they should be able to start the project with in two weeks. Steve mentioned that he did not do carpets but had an associate of his who could do it as part of his proposal. This was great for me because i did not have to search for a company on my own and risk it not being done professionally.

Steve did a great job start to finish. He was quick to respond to our initial email inquiry, followed up with a quote and always got back to us to answer any questions we had. We scheduled a date easily and he arrived on time and well prepared. We asked him to repair some rotting wood above our front entry door that was part of the decorative trim. We also asked him to sand and repaint the wood areas around the front door and fix our storm door which was sticking. He did everything we asked and when he left, our door look great! He actually replaced the trim with a piece of poly wood that won't rot ever again and sealed it up so we won't have any further issues. The piece he used nearly identically matched the original piece, so you would never know the difference. We were really pleased with his work and professionalism. We will definitely use him again and have already asked for quotes on other jobs!

I emailed Pickering Construction asking if they would be interested in looking at some repair work. Steve Pickering replied very quickly in the affirmative and made an appointment to look at the work. He showed up on time and checked it out, and promised to email that evening with an estimate. He did so, and I felt the cost was reasonable and fair, so gave him the go ahead. We made a date for 8/29 which was their first open date. However Steve susequently emailed that he had an earlier opening and we agreed on August 18. Steve and his co-worker arrived early and got right to work. As the day progressed he advised me of some furthur repairs that showed up as he pulled off rotted wood, and I advised him to go ahead and do whatever was needed. He got done about 3:30pm, and carefully went over the finished job with me and made sure I was satisfied. Despite doing additional work above and beyond our original discussion, there was no additional charge from Steve. I was very impressed with Steve's approach to business. He is polite, knowledgeable and focused. He clearly takes pride in his workmanship, and is very neat, and cleaned up the work areas perfectly. He did extra work for the original price. He has excellent customer communication and followup. I own a service business, and can truly appreciate when a young man works hard to develop and grow his business. While this was a small job, we won't hesitate to ask Steve to tackle numerous other work we have coming up. It was a pleasure working with Pickering Construction, and we would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Removed 2 sections of gutter, removed rotted fascia boards; painted and installed new fascia, rehung and caulked gutters. Replaced and painted rotted trim board by front door; reinstalled and shimmed ornamental wood corner post at rear of house; repaired and painted prominent slatted wood vent window over garage door.

I am a new Angie's List member and so Pickering was my first experience -- and it was truly a pleasure, especially compared to the handful of handymen I was incredibly disappointed with prior. I emailed Steve through Angie's List, detailing what I needed done - and he surprised me by replying to my email (about 10pm at night), saying he could easily do the job, an estimate of $500, and looking to schedule. I thought his ability to quickly reply - and converse 100% via the method I prefer - email - was impressive! Steve arrived as expected, got right to work with 1 assistant, and I went upstairs to work. He called me down about 2 hours later and he already had about 3 of the 6 jobs already done! I was shocked at how quick he did the work, and quietly nonetheless! He checked with me before installing/hanging all items, and I had to do nothing else. The ceiling fan works great - no wobbling that I see at some people's houses. He even cleaned up some dirty finger prints on a ceiling from the last handyman (sad but true!) and offered to touch up some paint next to the moulding - at no extra charge. He finished the job in about 3 hours which far exceeded my expectations and was even nice enough to only charge me $450 instead of the $500 estimate. Wow. Clearly he's a professional who knows how to treat customers, large and small. I will definitely be using him for future work around my house, and will gladly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: - Install ceiling fan w/ light - Hang round heavy (50lb?) mirror on wall - Hang flat screen TV on wall using bracket made for TV - Paint exterior front door - both sides - Cut, Paint, and install (nail) one piece of moulding -- touch up paint on wall next to moulding (above and beyond my request!) - Check electrical wiring on light fixture recently installed; tighten fixture so it's more secure

Steve was referred by a trusted friend. He had done some smaller projects for us prior to the kitchen and we were happy with his other work. For a big project like this, we wanted someone local so he would stay with us until the project was complete and Stave did just that. We chose to go with the design and cabinetry from another company. There were some significant challenges with the design and materials but Steve worked with us to make sure the job was done to our liking. Steve completed the job, and added several extras, within the quoted price. We now have an absolutely stunning kitchen and we couldn't be happier!
Description of Work: The project was to completely renovate an outdated kitchen in a home built in the mid 80's. One wall was removed, existing cabinets and counters were removed, plumbing was reworked, new cabinets were installed, extensive drywall patching done, one window was reframed, extensive crown molding work was done, walls were repainted, and backsplash installed.

My experience with Pickering Construction was not satisfactory, agreeable nor enjoyable. There were several custom and standard features included in this renovation project. Too much of the standard work was below expectation. Some of the custom work was left incomplete or was determined after the project started that Pickering Construction did not have the experience to accomplish the task. No adjustment was awarded to the contract price. Other aspects of the project were very good, consistent with other reviews on Angie's List. In one final email contact with Pickering Construction, it was offered that "As long as I have my check I'm happy to make you happy with the work …" I declined the offer and ended the project paid in full but unfinished. In my opinion, Pickering Construction was not a good choice for the contractor on this project.

Never in my 8 years as a contractor have I ever had a dissatisfied customer! The member is a unique individual.Upon entering his house for the first time I was skeptical due to several half finished projects. I did guest bathroom project and had no problems. Then to the master had to build custom vanity out of 200 year old beams and did he was a part of every decision I made I built doors drawers and drawer faces to his liking until 2 days later said he wanted a rare wood so I felt I did my job as stated in contract and went down hill from there he refused to pay me even a portion of the 5 k he owed me I got a final punch list and did it all and a custom closet that wasn't in the contract told him I needed something moneywise to put us on level ground he refused so end result there was 2 hrs of touch ups left to do and he said he fired me and I wasn't welcome on his property.Since I was talking to a business associate telling him what happened and he said where does he live and told me all about how he's impossible to satisfy, wants something for nothing, and has had many contractors in and out of there basically they walk off the job.In conclusion I feel I more than earned the final payment dealing with him and he got a 30k job for 12500 he lied as well total of both jobs was 15k thank you!

Mr Pickering was professional, punctual and did a quality job. Althoug the job was small, he treated us with the care of a customer that was having a larger job done. Overall, a very favorable experience. I am considering using Steve on the larger projects we have in mind (assuming we can get there on price). He is very meticulous and diligent...focused on doing the job the right way.
Description of Work: There was a water leak somewhere in a wall, the source of which we had no idea. I called Steve as he had recently been into our home to price-out some remodeling work we are thinking about doing and he arranged for a plumber (in his family) to come out the next day. Within an hour the plumber had the source of the leak identified (the water line to our refrigerator's ice maker) called me to let me know and we arranged to have Steve come out the next day to open-up the wall/ceiling more so it could be repaired. The job was quick, efficient, good quality and the space was cleaned-up afterwards. Steve's dad handled plumbing and Steve handled sheetrocking, etc.

The project overall went well. I think the issue of the unlevel floor could have been analyzed better before starting to lay the tile, but in the end it was well corrected. All in all I would say Steve did an excellent job. He was careful, honest, reliable and has an excellent work ethic.
Description of Work: New pre-finished wood floors laid after additional nailing of subfloor to stabilize it. A new very nicely mitered border was placed around the hearth. I could not have been more pleased w/ the work! Steven Pickering is very talented, creative, honest. His prices are fair & competitive. He was punctual, and had to deal w/ condominium-permitted work hours. He worked w/ me on kitchen design, advising me when I had questions and completing the job exactly as I wanted. He had good suggestions based on his expertise. He completed the work according to expectations. He has professional resources when he can?t do the work, ex. Electricians & plumbers. The apt was always clean after a day?s work. I completely trusted him in my home. He is easy to work with, open to instruction, suggestion and experienced in offering suggestions.
