He showed up a few minutes before schedule and repaired a broken boat garage door. He worked efficiently and quickly. I appreciated that he communicated to me each step in the process when appropriate. Then there was an additional need for the garage opener repair. Steven took apart the entire opener, went out to replace the broken parts and reset everything. He also gave me the name of someone for other work I asked about in a different specialty than his. In short I appreciate his thoroughness, professionalism and he got the job done at a very reasonable price.
Description of Work: Repaired a door for boat garage.nraired the opener as well.

Steve and his helper Eric arrived, as promised, worked straight through both days & left the job site clean. Who could ask for more?
Description of Work: There's been a growing list of small 'Must Do' projects around our house, such as: installing/painting crown moulding around the kitchen cabinets, replacing the toe-kick edging, building a cookbook shelf under the kitchen island, installing more overhead lighting to illuminate 2 dark kitchen counter top work areas, completing counter top wood framing, etc. Steve submitted the best estimate, showed enthusiasm & creativity for the tasks at hand, maintained excellent communication with us and was a genuine pleasure to work with. He'll be back shortly to replace our kitchen cabinet knobs when the order arrives, as well as to make some minor adjustments in the work already completed. Little does he know that his good work has spawned another set of 'Must Dos' that are awaiting his return. We'd hate to see Steve become so popular that he wouldn't have time for our requests anymore...BUT..we highly recommend this true professional if you're in the area he services.

After requesting an estimate through Angie's List, Steve returned my email the same day. He then scheduled a visit for a few days later. He was very professional, talked through the work requested, made some suggestions and left to write up an estimate. The estimate was emailed to me the same night. The cost was reasonable so we scheduled the work. He arrived right on time with a co-worker and started prep work. The work went as planned and the quality was very good. Finished the work in two days. Very professional and easy to deal with. We will definitely use him again.
Description of Work: Repaired, prepped and painted our exterior front door, trim, columns and porch railings. Also installed a storm door which required building out the frame to compensate for the sidelights.

Steve was very patient with us in regard to a start time because materials were slow to come in. He began on the date he set and the job was finished about 6 weeks later. I do think it could have been accomplished sooner if the crew arrived earlier (than 10 am sometimes as late as 1) and stayed a little longer. Our job is still not quite finished because counter level cabinets which Steve said could be started at the time he began the overall remodel were not made on site and had to be ordered from a manufacturer. We're still waiting for those. The level of Steve's craftmanship was truly excellent and the plumber he used was also excellent.I would recommend that anyone using Pickering Construction NOT use the electrician, Christopher Brocar. He installed a bathroom light so that one of the bulbs was unconnected, complained constantly, and never tested his work (we're still hoping our heated floor works).
Description of Work: Steve and his crew remodeled a bathroom including moving plumbing fixtures, installing cabinetry, re-tiling and painting.

Him and his helper worked all day and waited for me to get home (as I mentioned I ran late due to an accident on the highway too and he was super patient about it.) He showed me all the work he did which was great, it looks so much better than it did before it's a huge weight off my mind. This was the last BIG project that I couldn't do on my own and needed help with. But everything went so smoothly, he did such a great job, quickly and within a reasonable price that I may just stick all the saws, nail guns, and the air compressor in the attic and have him come back to finish off the rest of my to do list because he's getting it done a lot quicker than I am at this rate. Oh almost forgot, he patched a hole in the wall from the previous owner that was much higher up on the wall without me even asking - That to me says a lot about going above and beyond.
Description of Work: Tore out interior door and door frame, as well as rotted out drywall due to water damage. He took care of mold that was there (not the scary black kind but it wasn't pretty either) with bleach and cleaned out the affected areas. He Replaced interior door and door frame including molding (which involved making some intricate cuts around a baseboard heater that was done very nicely) and replaced the nearby drywall. (Which required removing and re-installing baseboard heater.) He also sistered the beams at the bottom (the floor plate ones I believe) to reinforce the structure of the wall behind the drywall.
Steve and his team showed up right on the day they promised and worked for the number of days they had planned. It took a little extra time to get the garage door springs adjusted right, but they stuck with it and brought in an expert to make sure they were right. We had some preferred paint colors for the rooms in the local hardware store and Steve got the paint there to make sure the color was a good match. I will use this company again when I need more work.
Description of Work: We've had Steve do work for us a couple of times before and were very satisfied. This time we had three rooms painted, our front porch repaired and painted, and our front door and garage doors replaced and the old ones carted away. We got PVC no-rot garage doors that are much lighter and easier to open and close than the heavy wood ones we had. Also, they never need to be painted, which we are very happy about.

Very well. Efficient and detail oriented.
Description of Work: We had a puffback fro our furnace. Steve patched walls and imperfections and then painted my kitchen, large foyer stairwell, den and library. Job was excellent and each day it was cleaned up. At the end of the painting he sent someone for final cleaning. Steve repaired a leak I had in my shower with an easy solution. Someone could have charged me a lot more because I had no idea it was just using acrylic caulk instead of larger job. He threw this in at no cost. The best thing however was a gate he built at the bottom of my stairs to keep the dogs from going upstairs. He matched the red oak balusters and made a custom, beautiful gate that fits in with my architecture. Thanks again Steve.

Steve and helper showed up the afternoon of the 14th. I presented the coupon for 15% off - felt Steve was surprised/forgot he was offering couopn. You can see what I asked for which Steve said he could do. You can also see what I got round one and round two.The painting I would say is a C. One wall was left with the cutting in darker than the wall. The wall behind the bannister for stairs has sections just about painted (bannister was NOT removed for painting behind). The doors that were to fold back needed special hinges that Steve said would take 2 weeks to order. He knew of the job for 6 weeks but the hinges were not ordered in that time. You can see the "cabinets" that were made. They hung for 2 days and I said "no, they are hideous, remove them". Steve did remove them and we went over bookcases to be made instead - round two. The smaller of the bookcases rocks corner to corner so Steve said my floor was uneven. Level says otherwise and I would need a shim just shy of 1/2" to correct wobble. Wood used (plywood) is warped & inferior in my opinion. You can see the holes and knots in photos. Have many more photos not posted. I feel this was a job Steve was sorry he committed to, wanted to rush thru it and beyond his capabilities to begin with. I'm sure excuses will be given.

I guess no matter how far one goes some people just cannot be satisfied.I was showed a picture and told "I hate detail and want plain cabinets to both sides of my mantel".I painted living room, painted and built custom mantel and fireplace surround and round 1 cabinets. After we finished mantel i went over all dimensions and plans for cabinets and built them she was there the whole time.I installed them, primed and painted them made and installed doors and hardware.Four days later i get an email that says she hates them they are too boxy and she wanted bookshelves and some touch ups needed on walls.I went back removed cabinets repaired walls touched up where she told me to.I then drew and planned the bookshelves to build to match detail on mantel.I built them within a weeks time out of select pine #1 which she thinks is plywood, and even had my associate who is a professional cabinet painter spray them with 1coat primer and 3 coats of paint.I brought them on a saturday morning and delivered and everything was good never heard anything back not a thank you no call or email.I then see she posted this review. So details are this $2500 job, custom mantel, 400 sq ft prep paint walls trim ceiling, custom build cabinets, which because she changed her mind ,had to be ripped out and thrown away and then had to spend another 2 days on shelves and buy the materials. This job was a total loss $500 out of my pocket and 2 days of my labor.Never did i ask for anymore money i just tried to make her happy and im sickened by the amount of time effort and money i put in to do so and i get a bad review. In closing some people just cant be satisfied no matter what you do.Thank you for taking the time to read this and check out the other 40 A reviews I have.
Steve called right away and came out a day later to give me an estimate. We said that we were on a tight schedule and he accomodated us. Our job was finished in two weeks. A couple of things were unfinished because they were delivered late and Steve came out for these small installations and the job was done in entirety promptly. We never had to track him down. He answered our every call in a timely manner. He answered all our questions honestly, always listened respectfully and was prepared to make changes when we asked him. My husband is an engineer by training, and had great respect for Steve's knowledge and performance. In fact his team of workers were very professional, knowlegeable and efficient. We now have a beautiful bathroom. he tilework was done impeccably and we couldn't be happier. we will return to Steve in the future.
Description of Work: Our house was built in the 1940s. Steve demolished our old bathroom and rebuilt a new one from the studs out. All new fixtures and plumbing down to the septic line were redone and the configuration was changed. All electric wiring was redone, the wood floor was replaced with tile over radiant heat wiring.

Called to ask him to do a small list of items, the most urgent was to repair rotted boards on a walkway in front of our rental property. We are concerned that the small children living there could get splinters. He originally took a few days to get back to me and told me that he was too busy to do the work, which I appreciated, but then called me a couple of days later to say that he had time in the next week to go and look at the job and do the work. He was supposed to go out the next Wednesday but that morning I received a text message that it was pouring and would it be okay if he went out on Thursday. I wondered why he couldn't use an umbrella to at least go and inspect the work needed and give me a price, but didn't mention it to him. By Friday morning, when I hadn't heard back from him, I called and left a message asking for a status update. I was told there was a death in the family. At this point, after all of the phone tag and the fact that I have had too many handymen no show-no call in the last month, I felt I was being told an excuse and that he wasn't interested in the work. He text messaged me that he would go out on Saturday to look at the work and get me a bid. On Monday, I received a text message that it would cost me $750 to replace 5 rotted boards on a 3 foot wide deck walkway!! I was absolutely shocked at the overcharging and told him that his services would not be necessary!! His response was that he knows what his services are worth and that he was sorry he wasted both of our time. I will never use this person. I don't appreciate being treated unprofessionally and taken complete advantage of on pricing. My experience goes against the rest of the good reviews on Angie's List and I am so shocked and disappointed about it. I had high hopes for this contractor.

This obviously is a customer that was upset with my price which I told her to fix it properly and safely thats what it would cost.We played phone tag for a week i would leave a message 2 days later she left me a message and so on.I originally thought it would be replacing a couple boards but ended up whole structure underneath was rotted and collapsed.I was supposed to go wednesday and it was pouring so i rescheduled for thursday. My uncle passed away thursday. I informed her and said I would come saturday.I had the wake friday and funeral saturday.Right after the service,on the way home, I took my wife and son with me and looked at the job and informed Member what it would cost to fix right.I think it is extremely disrespectful, rude, and disgusting that she didnt respect the fact my uncle died. Also she immediately came on angies to write a bad review to mess up my rating when I pride myself with customer service and their happiness. Please take a look at the other 37 A reviews I have and the scope of work that was performed.Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Called Steve Pickering after Angie's List search. He arrived when stated for the walk-thru and estimate. He was professional and straight-forward. I called back later to confirm the job and we immediately set a date for the work. Steve again arrived on schedule and completed the jobs in the forecast time period. My wife was at home while he was working. She commented he was very clean and quiet, to the extent she wouldn't have known he was even in the house. She was very comfortable with Steve and will have him back to do future work. The work was done to our complete satisfaction.
Steve and his crew were excellent!. He intially came out to take measurements of our leaky roof Saturday evening and we had an estimate a short time later. We booked him for the following week, he came when he said they would and finished the job on time, even though we kept adding projects. A very reliable contractor who actually calls his clients back!! We highly recommend pickering constructions, we will be using them again in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced roof and decking, installed composite railings, built new staircase with railings and replaced shed roof and shingles
Contacted Steve after seeing his reviews on Angies list. He responded promptly and followed through with visit for estimate. Arrived as scheduled and completed job in timely fashion. All work was done to our satisfaction. Steve did a great job meeting all of our requests and left the job site clean. We have shared his card with neighbors and hope to use him for another project in the near future.

Steve was very professional in all aspects. He responded quickly to my inquiry, was punctual, and provided a written estimate for the work. He was able to schedule the work quickly and completed the job in the time frame agreed. He clearly explained the work to be done, and why. Overall, a very good experience. I would recommend him to anyone. I also asked him for an estimate for some additional work, and he quickly provided an estimate.

Mr. Steve Pickering of Pickering Construction installed an attic ladder in my condo just a few days ago. Mr. Pickering had first given me an estimate the prior week (during the holidays when most people were out on vacation) and he was able to schedule me for first thing the following week. I wanted an attic stair that could hold over 300lbs and Mr. Pickering took the time to help investigate options. We traded e-mails and collaborated to select the attic stair unit to install (an aluminum 350lb rated unit). Mr. Pickering arrived 15 minutes early on Monday and with the help of his assistant was able to efficiently install the attic stairs. In addition, the original location we had hoped to install the stairs turned out to be a problem due to how the joists were positioned and working together we were able to find another suitable area in the ceiling to locate the stairs. Overall I had an extremely positive experience with Mr. Pickering and I plan to use him again in the future for a range of additional work I need to have done. Highly recommended. Andrew

I found Steve on Angie's List. I sent him an email describing the work I wanted done and he responded the same day. I sent him some pictures of the bathroom and the dimensions and he got back to me with an estimate the next day. I scheduled the work to be done, he was available within 2 weeks to do it. He showed up in the morning on time and completed the job with in a day and a half. He was very professional and cleaned up after himself. It was like they weren't even here. The tile came out great and I will definitely use him for future remodeling jobs. I was extremely happy with the whole process, from start to finish.
Description of Work: Installed cement backer board, tile and grout in a full bathroom that I am remodeling.
I found Steve on Angie's list and he had great reviews. After making a list of what I wanted him to do, I called him. I don't remember if they answered right away or called back quickly, but he was at my house in a day or two to look at the work. I showed him what I wanted done, he noted it all down. He called me a day or two later with price estimates for each thing I wanted done, so I could choose to do what I could afford. We went with the whole list. He gave me a start date that was a few weeks out. I'd expect a good tradesman to be working, so this didn't bother me. I paid him half the estimate to lock in the commitment. The week before he was supposed to start, he called to confirm, and he showed up to start the work on the day we'd agreed. He brought a couple guys with him to work on the siding and the windows. It took about a week to do the work, plus a week of so for the specially ordered windows to come in. I am completely satisfied with the work. The new windows look great, the new floor does too. The drywall looks like new, the basement has stayed dry through some recent rains. You can't see the patches in the siding. The new fan looks and works great. Everything came out just the way I'd hoped. I am already making my list of other jobs I'll need doing. He's reliable and his work is excellent.
Description of Work: Steve replaced out kitchen and dining room windows, repaired some siding, repaired some drywall, put in a curtain drain for the basement door, replaced a ceiling fan, repaired some damage to the vanity in one bathroom, and fixed an inside door that wouldn't close. He was prompt to reply to my call with an itemized estimate. When we decided to do the work, he gave me a date and showed up when he said he would. The work took about a week, all told. The crew worked independently, kept a neat work area, and cleaned up when they left for the day. The ceiling fan was something we added during the job and Steve easily worked it in.

Steve is one of the best service persons I have worked with . He was very quick to respond to the initial contact, came out to make the estimate quickly and followed up with an email written proposal. He was right on time today, and did everything on the list, and some of the items were not straight forward, but took some ingenuity on his part to solve. He and his partner were extremely courteous, efficient, neat and clean. And the outcome surpassed our expectations. And at the end Steve walked around all the work areas to assure they had left it as clean as they found it. Our only warning... they are going to get more and more popular.. so don't be surprised if there is a wait for their services. ( we waited about 2 weeks)

Took a little while, but I told him I was in no hurry, he could do it piecemeal as weather permitted and his finish his other jobs. All in all, it was to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: I had called Steve back because the work he performed the first time I called him was very good. He built a porch roof by my front door, fixed a barn door that was full of moss, painted the barn, repaired some things on the barn and a few other miscellaneous items I needed performed. Always responded quickly - showed up when he said (weather was a problem these last few weeks) and did the work well. I will be calling him back.

I have enjoyed working with Steve and plan to in the future. He was always prompt in getting back to me. He has been very thorough in the work and the clean up was complete. We had a weather problem when the rain came early before the caulk had cured -- so some caulk washed out. But Steve was back the day I contacted him to the replace the caulk and to fix some trim.
Description of Work: I had bad leaks in two places where the siding was rotting out on my home next to a chimney and under a porch. Not only did Steve repair the leaks and replace all the rotting wood, but he also found the causes and was able to fix it so I won’t have problems in the future. New flashing was put in and caulked, new siding replaced the rotten pieces and new trim that was water resistant was placed around two windows. Now everything looks great.
